Ion exchange properties of lithium iron oxides

The αLiFeO 2 rock salt material has been prepared from lithium carbonate and ferric oxide. It was found that the lithium can be exchanged for silver in silver nitrate and, initially, a substituted rock salt is produced, Ag x Li 1− x FeO 2. The ultimate phase in the ion-exchange process is αAgFeO 2. The diffusion coefficient of Ag in Ag x LiFeO 2, determined by transient electrochemical measurements, was found to be around 5 × 10 −8 cm −2 s −1.

Silver substituted lithium iron oxides

The preparation of silver substituted lithium iron oxides is described; the structure and range of stoichiometry determined and the diffusion parameters investigated.

Reactions of lithium iron oxide (LiFeO 2) and the formation of spinels

Lithium iron oxide, LiFeO 2, at elevated temperatures undergoes many double decomposition reactions which yield the spinel mixed iron oxides as products. Among these reactions are those with sulfates, MSO 4, molybdates, MMoO 4, (M is Mg, Ni, Co, Zn, Cu) and magnesium orthophosphate, Mg 3(PO 4) 2. A typical reaction is NiSO 4 + 2 LiFeO 2 → NiFe 2O 4 + Li 2SO 4 which can be carried out above 600°C. Mixed oxides analogous to LiFeO 2 such as LiCrO 2 and LiMnO 2 undergo similar reactions.
