Concentration controlling of carboxylic ester-based electrolyte for low temperature lithium-ion batteries.

Low temperature has been a major challenge for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) to maintain satisfied electrochemical performance, and the main reason is the deactivation of electrolyte with the decreasing temperature. To address this point, in present work, we develop a low-temperature resistant electrolyte which includes ethyl acetate (EA) and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) as solvent and lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) as the primary lithium salt. Due to the preferential decomposition of LiDFOB and FEC, a solid electrolyte interface rich in LiF is formed on the lithium metal anodes (LMAs) and lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) cathodes, contributing to higher stability and rapid desolvation of Li+ ions. The batteries with the optimized electrolyte can undergo cycling tests at -40 °C, with a capacity retention of 83.9 % after 200 cycles. Furthermore, the optimized electrolyte exhibits excellent compatibility with both LCO cathodes and graphite (Gr) anodes, enabling a Gr/LCO battery to maintain a capacity retention of 90.3 % after multiple cycles at -25 °C. This work proposes a cost-effective electrolyte that can activate potential LIBs in practical scenarios, especially in low-temperature environments.

High Safety Electrolyte Design for Enabling High Energy-Density System of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2//Phosphorus by Simultaneously Adjusting Dual Electrode/Electrolyte Interfaces.

The demand for state-of-the-art high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries is increasing. However, the low specific capacity of electrode materials in conventional full-cell systems cannot meet the requirements. Ni-rich layered oxide cathodes such as Li(Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1)O2 (NCM811) have a high theoretical specific capacity of 200 mAh g-1, but it is always accompanied by side reactions on the electrode/electrolyte interface. Phosphorus anode possesses a high theoretical specific capacity of 2596 mAh g-1, but it has a huge volume expansion (≈300%). Herein, a highly compatible and secure electrolyte is reported via introducing an additive with a narrow electrochemical window, Lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB), into 1m LiPF6 EC/DMC with tris (2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphate (TFEP) as a cosolvent. LiDFOB participates in the formation of organic/inorganic hybrid electrode/electrolyte interface layers at both the cathode and anode sides. The side reactions on the surface of the NCM811 cathode and the volume expansion of the phosphorus anode are effectively alleviated. The NCM811//RP full cell in this electrolyte shows high capacity retention of 82% after 150 cycles at a 0.5C rate. Meanwhile, the electrolyte shows non-flammability. This work highlights the importance of manipulating the electrode/electrolyte interface layers for the design of lithium-ion batteries with high energy density.

Three-dimensional cross-linked network deep eutectic gel polymer electrolyte with the self-healing ability enable by hydrogen bonds and dynamic disulfide bonds

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are effective solutions for the development of high-performance and flexible lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, the key problems of SPEs including low ionic conductivity and inability to repair damage have hindered their industrialization process. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) cross-linked network gel polymer electrolyte (CNGPE) is designed. The addition of deep eutectic solvent (DES) improves the ionic conductivity of CNGPE. The hydrogen bonds and dynamic disulfide bonds in the 3D cross-linked network endow CNGPE rapid self-healing ability at ambient temperature. In addition, the addition of lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) and lithium nitrate (LiNO3) helps to form a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI). Due to the ingenious design, the Li/CNGPE/Li symmetrical cell exhibits excellent interface stability and no short circuit occurs for more than 800 h. The assembled LiFePO4/CNGPE/Li cell exhibits a discharge specific capacity of 126 mAh g−1 after 960 cycles at 0.5C. This work has shown that the self-healing gel polymer electrolyte containing DES provides an effective and feasible method for the development of high-performance LMBs.

All‐Fluorinated Low‐Solvation Electrolytes for High‐Voltage Sodium Metal Batteries with Appealing Stability

AbstractHigh‐voltage sodium‐metal batteries (SMBs) are considered a promising battery system due to their abundant sodium source and high energy density. However, the instability of electrolytes, notorious reactivity of Na metal, and severe dissolution of solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film impede their long lifespan and high safety. Herein, a low‐solvation modulating strategy is proposed to design an all‐fluorinated electrolyte consisting of 1 m NaPF6 in fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), methyl 2, 2, 2‐trifluoroethyl carbonate (FEMC), and lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB), realizing high working voltage and excellent cycling stability of SMBs. Theoretical calculations and experimental characterizations confirm that the presence of FEMC significantly improves the antioxidant property of the electrolyte and contributes to the formation of high‐quality interfacial phases on both anode and cathode. While LiDFOB benefits to optimize the energy bandgap and the solvated structure and stabilizing the FEMC. Consequently, excellent oxidative stability up to 5 V and ultra‐stable cycling of Na||Na3(VOPO4)2F battery (with a capacity retention of 82.9% after 1800 cycles at 4.4 V) are obtained, exhibiting superior stability to its counterparts. The proposed strategy provides a new insight to design SMBs operated at high voltages.

An Ultralow-concentration and Moisture-resistant Electrolyte of Lithium Difluoro(oxalato)borate in Carbonate Solvents for Stable Cycling in Practical Lithium-ion Batteries.

The electrolyte concentration not only impacts the battery performance but also affects the battery cost and manufacturing. Currently, most studies focus on high-concentration (>3 M) or localized high-concentration electrolytes (~1 M); however, the expensive lithium salt imposes a major concern. Most recently, ultralow concentration electrolytes (<0.3 M) have emerged as intriguing alternatives for battery applications, which feature low cost, low viscosity, and extreme-temperature operation. However, at such an early development stage, many works are urgently needed to further understand the electrolyte properties. Herein, we introduce an ultralow concentration electrolyte of 2 wt % (0.16 M) lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) in standard carbonate solvents. This electrolyte exhibits a record-low salt/solvent mass ratio reported to date, thus pointing to a superior low cost. Furthermore, this electrolyte is highly compatible with commercial Li-ion materials, forming stable and inorganic-rich interphases on the lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) cathode and graphite anode. Consequently, the LiCoO2-graphite full cell demonstrates excellent cycling performance. Besides, this electrolyte is moisture-resistant and effectively suppresses the generation of hydrogen fluoride, which will markedly facilitate the battery assembly and recycling process under ambient conditions.

Simultaneous Realization of Multilayer Interphases on a Ni-Rich NCM Cathode and a SiOx Anode by the Combination of Vinylene Carbonate with Lithium Difluoro(oxalato)borate.

Ni-rich NCM and SiOx electrode materials have garnered the most attention for advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs); however, severe parasitic reactions occurring at their interfaces are critical bottlenecks in their widespread application. In this study, an effective additive combination (VL) composed of vinylene carbonate (VC) and lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) is proposed for both Ni-rich NCM and SiOx electrode materials. The LiDFOB additive individually delivers inorganic-rich cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers in anodic and cathodic polarizations before the VC additive. Subsequently, the VC additive is capable of the formation of additional CEI and SEI layers composed of relatively organic-rich components through an electrochemical reaction; thus, inorganic-organic hybridized CEI and SEI layers are simultaneously formed at the Ni-rich NCM and SiOx electrodes. Accordingly, the VL-assisted electrolyte exhibits remarkably prolonged cycling retention for the Ni-rich NCM cathode (86.5%) and SiOx anode (72.7%), whereas the standard electrolyte shows a substantial decrease in cycling retention for the Ni-rich NCM cathode (59.2%) and SiOx anode (18.1%). Further systematic analyses prove that VL-assisted electrolytes form effective interphases for Ni-rich NCM and SiOx electrodes simultaneously, thereby leading to stable and prolonged cycling behaviors of LIBs that offer high energy densities.

Enabling the use of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide as electrolyte salt for Li‐ion batteries based on silicon anodes and Li(Ni0.4Co0.4Mn0.2)O2 cathodes by salt additives

AbstractLithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) is a promising alternative salt for Li‐ion batteries. Unlike the conventional LiPF6, it is not prone to HF formation, and thus resistant to moisture. However, for cell voltages relevant for high energy cathodes (&gt;4.2 V), the aluminium current collector will corrode in electrolytes based on this salt, and mitigation strategies are needed. Here, the use of Lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4) and Lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) salts as additives is investigated, in order to enable the use of LiFSI‐based electrolytes. The performance of the electrolytes is evaluated separately for high content silicon anodes, (NMC442) cathodes and the aluminium current collector by electrochemical methods and post mortem analysis by SEM imaging and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Electrolytes with LiDFOB as additive showed the best performance for all components, and were therefore selected for cycling in full cells, composed of silicon anodes and NMC442. Results show that LiFSI‐based electrolytes with LiDFOB additive has an electrochemical performance similar to conventional electrolytes, and is thus a competitive, alternative electrolyte with a low fluorine content. Furthermore, it is verified that the good SEI forming properties of LiFSI based electrolytes known from cycling in half cells, is also preserved during cycling in full cells

Constructing LiF-Dominated Interphases with Polymer Interwoven Outer Layer Enables Long-Term Cycling of Si Anodes.

Constructing a robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is extremely critical to developing high-energy-density silicon (Si)-based lithium-ion batteries. However, it is still elusive how to accurately manipulate the chemical composition and structure of the SEI layer. Herein, a LiF-dominated SEI film intertwined by a highly elastic polymer is achieved by regulating the defluorination mechanism of the fluorinated carbonate additive on the Si electrode surface. The experimental and computational results confirm that the decomposition route of trans-difluoroethylene carbonate (DFEC) molecules can be significantly altered in the presence of lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) additive. The induction of direct defluorination of DFEC step by LiDFOB, as opposed to the breaking of C-O bonds without LiDFOB addition, is crucial in ensuring the exclusive formation of LiF-dominated SEI and maintaining the cyclic structure of DFEC. The defluorinated DFEC easily polymerizes to form poly(vinylene carbonate), enhancing the elasticity of the SEI. The resulting LiF-dominated SEI film with a polymer interwoven outer layer shows enhanced ionic conductivity and mechanical stability, which can effectively accelerate electrode reaction kinetics and maintain the structural stability of the Si electrode. As a result, the Si electrode with the electrolyte containing the designed dual-additive exhibits superior cycling stability and excellent rate performance, delivering a high reversible capacity of 1487.3 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g-1.

Additive-Derived Surface Modification of Cathodes in All-Solid-State Batteries: The Effect of Lithium Difluorophosphate- and Lithium Difluoro(oxalato)borate-Derived Coating Layers.

Sulfide-based electrolytes, with their high conductivity and formability, enable the construction of high-performance, all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). However, the instability of the cathode-sulfide electrolyte interface limits the commercialization of these ASSBs. Surface modification of cathodes using the coating technique has been explored as an efficient approach to stabilize these interfaces. In this study, the additives lithium difluorophosphate (LiDFP) and lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) are used to fabricate stable cathode coatings via heat treatment. The low melting points of LiDFP and LiDFOB enable the formation of thin and uniform coating layers by a low-temperature heat treatment. All-solid-state cells containing LiDFP- and LiDFOB-coated cathodes show electrochemical performances significantly better than those comprising uncoated cathodes. Among all of the as-prepared coated cathodes, LiDFP-coated cathodes fabricated using a slightly lower temperature than the phase-transition temperature of LiDFP (320 °C) show the best discharge capacity, rate capability, and cyclic performance. Furthermore, cells comprising LiDFP-coated cathodes showed significantly low impedance. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirm the effectiveness of the LiDFP coating. LiDFP-coated cathodes minimized side-reactions during cycling, resulting in a significantly low cathode-surface degradation. Hence, this study highlights the efficiency of the proposed coating method and its potential to facilitate the commercialization of ASSBs. Overall, this study reports an effective technique to stabilize the cathode-electrolyte interface in sulfide-based ASSBs, which could expedite the practical implementation of these advanced energy-storage devices.

An Electrolyte with Less Space-Occupying Diluent at Cathode Inner Helmholtz Plane for Stable 4.6 V Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Reasonably elevating the working voltage (≥4.4 V vs. Li/Li+ ) of the cathode is one of the efficient approaches to maximize the energy density of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). As a preferred partner for high-voltage LIB systems, localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE), characterized by a stronger Li solvation structure, less free solvent, and robust electrode/electrolyte interphase has attracted much attention in academic circles. Herein, we systematically studied the role of the diluent in LHCE on the formation of the cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and elucidated that the existing anion-diluent pairing in the inner Helmholtz plane (IHP) results in an uneven CEI and subsequent battery degradation under high voltage. A m-fluorotoluene (mFT) diluent was further employed in the LHCE containing lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) to facilitate a uniform and rich-anion-derived CEI, since the weaker interaction of HmFT -BDFOB - , as compared to the HHhydrofluoroether -BDFOB - , reduces the influence of mFT in IHP or initial CEI formation. Consequently, the mFT-dominated LHCE propels the high-voltage performance of LIBs one step forward, endowing a 4.6 V-class 1.2-Ah graphite||LiNi0.8 Co0.1 Mn0.1 O2 pouch cells a 90.4 % capacity retention after 130 cycles. Our study thus describes a new index affecting the CEI formation and proposes novel strategies to deeply optimize the high-voltage LIBs.

Demystifying the Salt-Induced Li Loss: A Universal Procedure for the Electrolyte Design of Lithium-Metal Batteries

Eutectic-Based Polymer Electrolyte with the Enhanced Lithium Salt Dissociation for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries.

The deployment of lithium metal anode in solid-state batteries with polymer electrolytes has been recognized as a promising approach to achieving high-energy-density technologies. However, the practical application of the polymer electrolytes is currently constrained by various challenges, including low ionic conductivity, inadequate electrochemical window, and poor interface stability. To address these issues, a novel eutectic-based polymer electrolyte consisting of succinonitrile (SN) and poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGMEA) is developed. The research results demonstrate that the interactions between SN and PEGMEA promote the dissociation of the lithium difluoro(oxalato) borate (LiDFOB) salt and increase the concentration of free Li+ . The well-designed eutectic-based PAN1.2 -SPE (PEGMEA: SN=1: 1.2 mass ratio) exhibits high ionic conductivity of 1.30 mS cm-1 at 30 °C and superior interface stability with Li anode. The Li/Li symmetric cell based on PAN1.2 -SPE enables long-term plating/stripping at 0.3 and 0.5 mA cm-2 , and the Li/LiFePO4 cell achieves superior long-term cycling stability (capacity retention of 80.3 % after 1500 cycles). Moreover, Li/LiFePO4 and Li/LiNi0.6 Co0.2 Mn0.2 O2 pouch cells employing PAN1.2 -SPE demonstrate excellent cycling and safety characteristics. This study presents a new pathway for designing high-performance polymer electrolytes and promotes the practical application of high-stable lithium metal batteries.

Understanding and Mitigating the Dissolution and Delamination Issues Encountered with High-Voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4

In our initial study on the high-voltage 5 V cobalt-free spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) cathode, we discovered a severe delamination issue in the laminates when cycled at a high upper cut-off voltage (UCV) of 4.95 V, especially when a large cell format was used. This delamination problem prompted us to investigate further by studying the transition metal (TM) dissolution mechanism of cobalt-free LNMO cathodes, and as a comparison, some cobalt-containing lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxides (NMC) cathodes, as the leachates from the soaking experiment might be the culprit for the delamination. Unlike other previous reports, we are interested in the intrinsic stability of the cathode in the presence of a baseline Gen2 electrolyte consisting of 1.2 M of LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate/ethyl methyl carbonate (EC/EMC), similar to a storage condition. The electrode laminates (transition metal oxides, transition metal oxides, TMOs, coated on an Al current collector with a loading level of around 2.5 mAh/cm2) or the TMO powders (pure commercial quality spinel LNMO, NMC, etc.) were stored in the baseline solution, and the transition metal dissolution was studied through nuclear magnetic resonance, such as 1H NMR, 19F NMR, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Significant electrolyte decomposition was observed and could be the cause that leads to the TM dissolution of LNMO. To address this TM dissolution, additives were introduced into the baseline electrolyte, effectively alleviating the issue of TM dissolution. The results suggest that the observed delamination is caused by electrolyte decompositions that lead to etching, and additives such as lithium difluorooxalato borate and p-toluenesulfonyl isocyanate can alleviate this issue by forming a firm cathode electrolyte interface. This study provides a new perspective on cell degradation induced by electrode/electrolyte interactions under storage conditions.

In situ generated of hybrid interface in poly(1,3-dioxolane) quasi solid electrolyte and extended sulfone cosolvent for lithium-metal batteries

The practical application of lithium metal batteries with high energy density are difficult to apply due to the problem of uncontrolled lithium dendrite growth with commercial liquid electrolytes. Herein, we designed a poly 1,3-dioxolane (PDOL) based quasi solid polymer electrolyte with in-situ polymerization. A small amount of lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) provides cationic initiation center for the polymerization of dioxolane (DOL). Sulfolane (SL) were further introduced into the system as a cosolvent and the ionic conductivity was increased to 3.22 × 10-4 S cm-1followed with a high Li+ transfer number of 0.73 at room temperature. Trace amount of SbF3 was introduced to form a robustness inorganic-rich hybrid interface that reduces the decomposition of electrolyte components and retards the formation of lithium dendrites during cycling. The superior rate performance and stable 5C long cycle performance are obtained in LiFePO4||Li full cell owing to the interaction between Li+, SL and PDOL. This work expands the choice of components in quasi solid electrolytes to manufacture qualified LMBs with enhanced performance.

Highly Oxidative-Resistant Cyano-Functionalized Lithium Borate Salt for Enhanced Cycling Performance of Practical Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Lithium difluoro(oxalato) borate (LiDFOB) has been widely investigated in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its advantageous thermal stability and excellent aluminum passivation property. However, LiDFOB tends to suffer from severe decomposition and generate a lot of gas species (e.g., CO2 ). Herein, a novel cyano-functionalized lithium borate salt, namely lithium difluoro(1,2-dihydroxyethane-1,1,2,2-tetracarbonitrile) borate (LiDFTCB), is innovatively synthesized as a highly oxidative-resistant salt to alleviate above dilemma. It is revealed that the LiDFTCB-based electrolyte enables LiCoO2 /graphite cells with superior capacity retention at both room and elevated temperatures (e.g., 80 % after 600 cycles) with barely any CO2 gas evolution. Systematic studies reveal that LiDFTCB tends to form thin and robust interfacial layers at both electrodes. This work emphasizes the crucial role of cyano-functionalized anions in improving cycle lifespan and safety of practical LIBs.

Tris(trimethylsilyl) Phosphite and Lithium Difluoro(oxalato)borate as Electrolyte Additives for LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4‐Graphite Lithium‐Ion Batteries

AbstractRaising the energy density of lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) through the operation of high‐voltage cathodes presents a challenge in terms of practical use due to electrolyte degradation. Consequently, it is imperative to explore new materials to circumvent this issue. In this study, a combination of tris(trimethylsilyl) phosphite (TMSPi) and lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) is presented as film‐forming additives in a conventional LiPF6‐containing carbonate‐based electrolyte solution in high‐voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4‐graphite full cells. At high voltage, TMSPi oxidizes on the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) cathode surface prior to the decomposition of electrolyte solvents, promoting the formation of a stable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer. In tandem, given that LiDFOB has a lower reduction potential than ethylene carbonate (EC), it has the possibility of forming a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the graphite anode surface. Combining the two additives was found to suppress the degradation of the electrolyte to a large extent. Among the investigated concentration of the additives, the combination of 1 wt. % TMSPi and 2 wt. % LiDFOB added to LP40 electrolyte exhibits improved capacity retention of 80 % after 400 cycles at 0.3 C, compared to the electrolyte with no additive with 67 % capacity retention over the same period. Thereby, the combination of TMSPi with LiDFOB provides an improvement for high voltage LIBs.

Improved Performance of Silicon-Containing Anodes with Organic Solvent-Solubilized Lithium Nitrate

Three different organic solvents (dimethylacetamide (DMAc), dimethylformamide (DMF), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)) were used to improve the solubility of LiNO3 in a standard carbonate-based electrolyte with lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) as the salt. Together, the LiDFOB and organic-solvent solubilized LiNO3 preferentially reduce on the surface of silicon-containing anodes to create an SEI rich in oxalates, nitrate decomposition species, and B-F species. The improved stability of the SEI throughout the first 100 cycles results in silicon and silicon/graphite composite anodes with better capacity retention than observed with standard electrolytes or fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) containing electrolytes. This study demonstrates the feasibility of the use of non-traditional electrolyte solvents in the improvement and optimization of lithium ion-battery electrolytes.
