EFL Students' Perceptions on the Integration of AI in Fostering Critical Thinking Skills

A developing discussion over the effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on students' critical thinking skills has emerged with their introduction into the classroom. Even if AI can provide several advantages, some worries depending too much on these technologies could impede the growth of critical thinking abilities. This research aims to analyze how students perceive the influence of AI on their critical thinking abilities. This research is descriptive qualitative research that involves collecting data from direct interviews. The respondents are 15 (fifteen) students from the English Literature study program, Letter Faculty, Sawerigading University Makassar. The research found that students perceive the following impact of AI use on their critical thinking abilities: 1) Hindering the development of critical thinking skills. 2) Assisting in the retrieval of information, data analysis, and the resolution of everyday issues. 3) Causing dependence on technology. 4) Helping to evaluate the information quickly; 5) Exploring alternative ideas; and 6) Improving reasoning ability. Overall, we need to balance the use of AI while prioritizing students' critical thinking. It is important to encourage students to use AI responsibly and judiciously, while also emphasizing the importance of critically evaluating the information provided by AI systems.

Creating meaning: Developing students’ understanding of Indigenous community issues in prose class

This study investigated the significance of discussing a literary work written by an Indigenous American author to students’ general understanding of the socio-cultural, economic, and political issues of the Indigenous communities (ICs) in Indonesia. A total of 153 students who enrolled in the Prose Class at the English Literature Study Program at Universitas Negeri Semarang participated in the study. This study adopted a pedagogical application model consisting of pre-reading activities, general comprehension, and connecting literary text with social context. The treatment was part of an attempt to incorporate local ICs content in the learning process and make it mainstream. This research employed a mixed method, and the participants completed the pre and post-tests as the quantitative data. In addition, an open-ended questionnaire and observation were used to collect the qualitative data. We employed Freire’s critical pedagogy to descriptively analyze the treatment process and results. The findings revealed that the treatment improved the student’s understanding of the issues faced by the ICs in Indonesia. They could comment critically on the issues during the discussion activity and fill in the knowledge gaps in the pre-test result. This study also suggested the integration and discussion of the ICs’ local values and issues into the education materials and texts to develop students’ critical thinking skills.

Studi eksplorasi nilai-nilai Serat Wulang Putri Nyi Adisara: respon pembaca perempuan jawa masa kini

Serat Wulang Putri Nyi Adisara is a classic text that provides guidance on becoming an ideal Javanese woman. This study examines contemporary Javanese women's perceptions of the traditional values outlined in Serat Wulang Putri Nyi Adisara. The method used is a descriptive qualitative survey and a literary reception approach towards the views of female readers of the Javanese Literature Study Program and Javanese Language and Literature Education Study Program, FBS Unnes. Through a literary reception approach to the reader's view of Serat Wulang Putri Nyi Adisara, the interaction between traditional hopes and the reader's modern aspirations is explained. The findings in this research reveal an understanding of the values of Serat Wulang Putri Nyi Adisara among contemporary Javanese women. In Serat Wulang Putri Nyi Adisara women are taught to be patient, sincere, and obedient. This study contributes to a broader understanding of how these texts shape roles and how these roles evolve over time in response to social and cultural change. Interlanguage Produced by the 8th Semester Students of English Literature Study Program at Stikubank University

This research is aimed to find the types and factors of interlanguage using descriptive method. The researcher used the theory from Xin Wang and Lingling Fan (2020) about interlanguage. The data is gathered from the students of eighth semester of English Literature in University of Stikubank. The procedures used to gather the data are: interviewing the participants, asking to do the monologue, recording the monologue, listening the English monologue, transcribing the monologue, segmented the data into unit of analysis. Eight of eight students made mistakes. The student initialed “U” made 48% mistakes, and the student initialed “D” made 1% mistake. Overgeneralization became the most mistake they made because it belongs to grammatical structurures that does not exist in first language

Kesalahan Penggunaan Kata Kerja “Juyou” dan “Yongyou” dalam Karangan Mahasiswa STBA-PIA Medan Semester VII T.A. 2020/2021

The aim of this research is to describe the types of language errors and the factors that cause them in the use of the verbs jùyǒu and yōngyǒu in Mandarin essays in the seventh semester of STBA-PIA T.A. 2020/2021. This research uses a qualitative descriptive research design to achieve the research objectives. The subjects of this research were 40 students. The data collection techniques used are documentation techniques to determine the types of language errors and interview techniques to determine the factors that cause these language errors. This research obtained results showing that there were four types of errors made by students of the fourth year Chinese literature study program STBA-PIA Medan semester VII, namely subtraction errors of 1 sentence (1.2%), addition errors of 7 sentences (8 .2%), replacement errors were 74 sentences (87.1%) and sequencing errors were 3 sentences (3.5%), where replacement errors were the highest type of error among the four types of errors. Apart from that, the factors causing errors in using the verbs jùyǒu and yōngyǒu can be divided into two, namely interlingual factors as many as 3 people (30%) and intralingual factors as many as 7 people (70%).

Students’ Experience of Online Interpreting Learning with Native Speakers

Interpreting is one of the skills that is very necessary in global communication. The use of digital technology and web-based technology in interpreting classes has been widely used in Indonesia, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Learning interpreting is very challenging, especially directly with native speakers and done using e-learning. This research aims to describe the experience of online interpreting learning with native speakers from the student's perspective regarding the problems and advantages of this learning method. This research was qualitative in nature, involving all sixth semester students in the English Literature study program who took Interpreting Workshop course totaling 25 students. Data were obtained through observation and questionnaires. The finding of the study shows learning interpreting online with native speaker has several advantages as well as it has less psychological impact. It is hoped that after finding problems, solutions can be found to overcome these problems and utilize the advantages of this learning method to maximize learning outcomes.

The Influence of Grammatical and Competition on Communication Anxiety of Students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Study Program, Wisnuwardhana University, Malang

In general, it is found that several students experience difficulties in pronouncing the language, do not dare to speak firmly, and seem to have difficulty with the grammatical meaning of what is said. The problem is a lack of understanding of grammatical meaning and competition at his age, sometimes appearing nervous, worried, feeling shy, tense, avoiding face-to-face and anxious when communicating. The student's condition needs to be studied with the aim of finding out the extent of the difficulties they are experiencing to be used to solve the problem. There were 87 students participating in the Indonesian Language and Literature Study Program at Wisnuwardhana University Malang, using a population study sampling technique. Quantitative research methods using competitive, grammatical and communication anxiety scales have been tested for validity with Moment Products, and reliability with Cronbach's Alpha, the results are valid and reliable. The results of data analysis using ANOVA show that the sig 0.161 is not significant because the result is > 0.05, meaning that communication anxiety is not only influenced by grammar and competition but can also be influenced by other aspects.

PENYUSUNAN MEDIA PROMOSI BERBASIS INFORMASI DAN TEKNOLOGI UNTUK BALAIYANPUS DPAD DIY

DPAD DIY Library Service Center (Balaiyanpus), which provides resources for disseminating knowledge and information, always needs to introduce to the public its three units: Grhatama Pustaka Library, Jogja Library Center, and Modern Learning House. Unfortunately, its promotional materials were limited. To optimize its promotion, the English Literature Study Program of UNY conducted a Community Service (PkM) aiming to develop information technology-based promotional media through creating contents for social media and translating its leaflets from Bahasa Indonesia into English. During preparation, the PkM team conducted a needs analysis and field survey. In development stage, the promotional media were designed by the team, given feedback by Balaiyanpus DPAD DIY, and revised. Afterwards, the translated promotional leaflets were posted on its website and 30 digital contents were broadcast via its Instagram and Tiktok accounts. Evaluation was received from respondents and Balaiyanpus DPAD DIY. The promotional contents were considered informative, interesting, understandable, fairly easy to remember, and appropriate for the social media. An assessment from Balaiyanpus DPAD DIY shows that those contents received a positive response from the public.

Exploring a web-based interactive writing assessment WISSE: User experiences

This paper aims to investigate the user experiences of Web-based Integrated Writing Assessment (WISSE) developed to help lecturers and learners provide and navigate feedback for academic writing in English. User experience is one of the crucial elements for product success and reception in Research and Development (R & D). Aspects of user experience highlighted in this study are web features, ease of use, and design. The participants involved were two lecturers and twenty-eight learners from the English Language Education and the English Literature study program at one of the prominent universities in Malang. At first, both learners and lecturers created a temporary account on the web prototype, and they were assigned two different roles: learners wrote and submitted a short argumentative essay on the application, and lecturers provided feedback on the essays through a personal comment box. At the end of the trial, both groups revealed their experience and inputs on the features, operation accessibility, and web design through questionnaires. To a large extent, both lecturers and learners were satisfied with the goal of the application to provide easy accessibility to assessing academic text. However, both groups agreed that more distinctive features should be added, along with a manual book and language switch feature, as it is attainable that the future users of WISSE will not be limited to EFL learners. The user trial results illustrate that while WISSE needs further development and revision, it exhibits proper performance and is prepared for large-scale use.

Student Baking in the Framework of Providing Human Resources and Strengthening Literacy

Education provides human resources for industry, while industry provides capital resources for Education. Thus, prioritizing the level of "practice" is expected to prepare the absorption of human resources who have competence in accordance with the needs of the times (read: the world of work) is feared to be the root of its emergence. Therefore, the Indonesian Literature Study Program in collaboration with BBJT (Central Java Provincial Language Center) conducts coaching Indonesian Literature study program students to be ready to face the challenges of the world of work. They are educated through apprenticeships at BBJT.

Peningkatan Materi Penelitian Bahasa dan Sastra untuk Dosen Bahasa Indonesia di FKIP Universitas Almuslim oleh Dosen Unsyiah

Improving Language and Literature Research Materials for Indonesian Language Lecturers at FKIP Almuslim University is a collaborative effort carried out by lecturers at the Language and Literature Study Program, FKIP Unsyiah, with their colleagues at FKIP Almuslim. The aim of this community service is to enrich understanding and research skills in the field of Indonesian language and literature among lecturers. Through a series of activities, including workshops, training and interactive discussions, Unsyiah lecturers share experiences, methods and resources to increase the research capacity of Indonesian language lecturers at FKIP Almuslim. It is hoped that this collaboration will make a positive contribution in improving the quality of research and teaching of Indonesian language and literature in the academic environment of FKIP Almuslim University.

Developing interactive multimedia in enhancing students' listening comprehension using Moodle and Thinglink

The effect of COVID-19 outbreak to education is in form of a shift of instructional practices from classroom-based instructions to online technology-based practices. To respond to the needs of technology-based instructional activities, this study developed interactive multimedia utilizing online technology-based platforms featuring Moodle and Thinglink to enhance students' comprehension in listening. This is a Research and Development involving fifty-three students of English literature study program in a state university in North Sumatera as object of the study. This study applies the ADDIE model to develop interactive multimedia learning. Purposive sampling was used to collect the samples for analysis. Tests, questionnaires, and interviews were designed and employed to collect the data. Material and media experts carried out the validation of the product. The paired samples t-test and independent samples t-test were utilized for data analysis. The outcomes are interactive multimedia using Moodle and ThingLink, complete with its tutorials, practices, and tests to boost the students' listening comprehension. Interactive multimedia featuring Moodle and ThingLink was deemed practical to use and effectively increased the students' listening comprehension according to the results of the material and media experts' validation and student response questionnaires.

Using Independent Learning Log for Listening Skill Learning Among First Year University Students

Students freshly admitted to the English Language and Literature study program has various levels of English proficiency. To maximize their listening skills, independent learning log was administered to the students to support their learning activities outside classroom. This action research was aimed at investigating the benefits of the log for the students’ listening skills, and for the students’ English learning in general. Data was collected from a listening class comprising 42 students. Each student was given an independent learning log and had to complete the log outside the classroom. Classroom discussions during the log completion were carried out in several meetings throughout the semester. In addition, the independent learning reflection was conducted at the last week of the semester. The findings indicate that the benefits of using the independent learning log for students were self-paced learning, more personalized choices, and more peer collaboration. Specifically, students became more self-directed and autonomous. Furthermore, they shared learning resources, forming a class-based learning community. Collectively, all of these benefit their future learning.

Penggunaan Media Sosial Sebagai Media Pembelajaran English For Hospitality

Social media (social media) has now become a part of the life of Indonesian people who are very phenomenal. Various kinds of advantages and conveniences are offered to interact with everyone both in terms of business even from various circles. Not only that, with the development of internet use and communication technology devices such as smartphones that are increasingly advanced, it has become one of the drivers of the growth of new networking sites that offer friends and information online. Social media has also become the backbone as a means of communication in this digital century. This study aims to determine students' perceptions about the extent of the use of social media in helping them learn English. English that is expected to be understood and learned is English in hospitality and also in advertising language. This research is important to find out how students perceive the effectiveness of using social media to support their learning and understanding and creativity in the field of English for Hospitality and in compiling advertising language. A total of 50 students from the English Literature study program of Udayana University will be used as data sources in conducting this research. This research will use qualitative methods with a case study design. The use of questionnaires as well as semi-structured interviews will be carried out in collecting data. In analyzing the data will use a basic statistical model of the results of questionnaires on students. Meanwhile, the results of the interview data will be analyzed with the Flow model from Miles and Huberman.

Pengenalan Konsep Kaizen 5-S Dan Karakter Sehat Sebagai Solusi Peningkatan Kompetensi Lulusan Memasuki Dunia Kerja Dan Industri Pada Siswa SMK Widya Praja Ungaran

This service activity is carried out based on the problems that occur among vocational school graduates related to lack of competence and weak absorption in the world of work and industry. Based on the potential of Widya Praja Ungaran Vocational School as a partner, the Community Service program implementation team chose the hospitality department. The specific target is class XII students who must be prepared as prospective graduates who can be absorbed by industry. Also related to the team's field of knowledge, namely Japanese Literature and Education, the solution chosen was the concept of Kaizen 5-S and Healthy Character. The 5-S concept is a working principle of Japanese society that prioritizes self-management and the work environment. This concept was chosen because it is suitable for implementation with class XII vocational school students because it is easy to apply. Healthy character is one of the special characteristics of the vision of the Bachelor of Japanese Literature study program which can be published so that it is not only able to compete in field competencies but also has a person with healthy character in four (4) dimensions, namely ethics, literacy, aesthetics and kinesthetics. Therefore, the team proposed a community service program with the title "Introduction of the Relationship between the Kanzen 5-S Concept and Healthy Character in Students as Preparation for Entering the World of Work and Industry at Widya Praja Ungaran Vocational School." The method used is a socialization method using presentation media, flashcards, posters and booklets.

Ascertaining Curriculum Relevance through Web-based Tracer Study

This article aims to describe the relevance of alumni's field of work with the curriculum of the Indonesian Literature Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Jambi. The research object was Indonesian Literature alumni who responded with a total of 86 respondents. The data collection technique was carried out by sharing the questionnaire link via the study program website https://sastraindonesia.unja.ac.id/ to 86 Alumni. The data in this research were analyzed using a descriptive approach. The findings show that graduates have worked with a high level of job suitability (41.9%). It indicates that the relevance of the curriculum to world needs is quite appropriate. The findings also show that most of the respondents worked as private employees. It can be concluded that the Indonesian Literature Study Program needs to equip graduates with recognition of competencies in certain fields for students. A certificate or competency certificate will be an added value for graduates to compete in the workplace.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: IMPROVE SCHOLARS WRITING SKILLS BY USING ONLINE COLABORATIVE WRITING

Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) is a guidelines approach that utilizes innovation to improve dialect capability, especially in composing. This research is entitled Linguistik Approach in Teaching Arabic at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Mamuju, West Sulawesi (Strengthening the Arabic Literature Study Program). The type of research used is qualitative research. The nature of this research is exploratory. The theory used in this research is Kanneth L. Pike's tagmemic theory and the scope of the discussion is focused on the study of Arabic language learning syntax. The results of this research have found that Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Mamuju, West Sulawesi still uses traditional methods in teaching Arabic. So the need for renewal to gain effectiveness in learning Arabic using a linguistik approach

Penerapan Model Pembelajaran Berbasis Proyek untuk Meningkatkan Aktivitas dan Keterampilan Analisis Sastra

Abstract The purpose of this study was to improve literary analysis activities and skills using a project-based learning model in the Indonesian Literature study program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (PTK) which was carried out in two cycles in the Oral Literature Study course. In the first cycle, two meetings were held and the second cycle was held three meetings. Each cycle is carried out in the stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The data were analyzed in accordance with the predetermined assessment rubric. In the first cycle, the students' activity scores increased, 80% of which reached the good category score and 20% reached the very good category score compared to the activity scores obtained in the pre-cycle. As for the value of the results of literary analysis in cycle I, it has not yet reached the target, namely not exceeding 50% of students getting good and very good category scores. In cycle II, the value of activity and the results of literary analysis experienced a significant increase, namely 100% of students getting very good category scores for activity scores and 80% of students getting good scores and 20% getting very good scores for the results of literary analysis. Based on these values, it can be said that the application of the Project Based Learning learning model in the Oral Literature Study course to improve activities and oral literature analysis skills is appropriate and effective to be applied. Sikap Mahasiswa Non Muslim Dalam Mengikuti Pelajaran Arab Melayu Angkatan 2021 PBSI Universitas Riau

This article aims to analyze the attitude of Non-Muslim students in the context of learning Malay Arabic in the Indonesian Language and Literature Study Program (PBSI) Riau University in 2021. The data collection method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data in this study are questionnaires and interviews conducted with Non-Muslim students of the 2021 batch of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program at Riau University. Non-Muslim students showed a positive attitude, openness, and dedication to the subject matter, facing the challenges of language, culture, and values contained in this subject. The main focus is the learning spirit shown by Non-Muslim students during the learning process of Arabic Malay. Although the subject matter is related to religious aspects, Non-Muslim students showed appreciation and openness to Islamic values and traditions taught in the context of Malay Arabic. The results of this study provide important insights for curriculum development as well as more inclusive teaching strategies, to ensure that learning Malay Arabic in Riau University's PBSI environment provides balanced and beneficial benefits for all students, regardless of their religious background.
