A systematic review of information literacy models in Yunnan province’s physical education faculty

This research aimed to explore the concerning characteristics of information literacy in the physical education faculty of higher education institutions in Yunnan Province. This study provides a systematic meta-analysis of 33 peer-reviewed papers from 2019 to 2023. It discusses that information literacy includes basic research skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving, which include their application in the learning process. The paper describes some approaches that can be used to implement information literacy into teaching and learning, including courses with learning objectives, learner-centered approaches, and institutional support. The study also explored technology and its relation to adopting competencies for the growing technologies’ evolution within the region’s education sector. In addition, the following factors could have enhanced the process: time constraints, differences in discipline, and variations in the usage of information technology. The results indicate the need for context-specific professional learning and policy intervention to facilitate the practice of physical education faculty in Yunnan. The information collected here serves as the framework for effective regional policies regarding education, curriculum, and teacher training, among other related aspects.

Expanding Accessibility in Cleft Care: The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Improving Literacy of Alveolar Bone Grafting Information.

The American Medical Association (AMA) recommends patient education materials (PEMs) be written at or below a sixth grade reading level. This study seeks to determine the quality, readability, and content of available alveolar bone grafting (ABG) PEMs and determine if artificial intelligence can improve PEM readability. Review of free online PEMs. Online ABG PEMs were retrieved from different authoring body types (hospital/academic center, medical society, or private practice). None. Content was assessed by screening PEMs for specific ABG-related topics. Quality was evaluated with the Patient Education Material Assessment Tool (PEMAT), which has measures of understandability and actionability. Open-access readability software (WebFX) determined readability with Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, and Gunning-Fog Index. PEMs were rewritten with ChatGPT, and readability metrics were reassessed. Quality, readability, and content of ABG PEMs. 34 PEMs were analyzed. Regarding quality, the average PEMAT-understandability score was 67.0 ± 16.2%, almost at the minimum acceptable score of 70.0% (p = 0.281). The average PEMAT-actionability score was low at 33.0 ± 24.1%. Regarding readability, the average Flesch Reading Ease score was 64.6 ± 12.8, categorized as "standard/plain English." The average Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level was 8.0 ± 2.3, significantly higher than AMA recommendations (p < 0.0001). PEM rewriting with ChatGPT improved Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level to 6.1 ± 1.3 (p < 0.0001). Available ABG PEMs are above the recommended reading level, yet ChatGPT can improve PEM readability. Future studies should improve areas of ABG PEMs that are most lacking, such as actionability.

Evolution and governance of online public opinion during COVID-19: a hybrid approach using communication visualization, SIR modeling, and simulation validation

IntroductionThis study investigates the mechanisms of public opinion dissemination and governance strategies during public health events, using a two-stage SIR model informed by the Information Cascade Theory.MethodsThe research employs Gephi visual analysis to identify principal nodes of public opinion and combines model simulations with dynamic propagation analysis to verify the model's precision and applicability.ResultsThe findings reveal that pivotal information nodes significantly accelerate the spread of public opinion, while ordinary nodes contribute to the natural attenuation of public discourse due to their strong spontaneous recovery capabilities. The simulation analysis further identifies the optimal timing for government intervention, particularly during the initial and peak phases of public opinion dissemination.DiscussionBased on the results, the study recommends strategies to strengthen the management of key opinion nodes, enhance public information literacy, optimize policy implementation, and utilize simulation tools to assist in public opinion management. These recommendations offer valuable theoretical and practical insights for managing public opinion during public health events.

Reshaping Academic Library Information Literacy Programs in the Advent of ChatGPT and Other Generative AI Technologies

This article reports on three digital information literacy initiatives created by instruction librarians to support students’ use of generative AI technologies, namely ChatGPT, in academic library research. The cumulative and formative data gathered from the initiatives reveals a continuing need for academic libraries to provide information literacy instruction that guides students toward the ethical use of information and awareness of using generative AI tools in library research. Moreover, analysis of the cumulative data gathered from Mentimeter anonymous surveys has led to the further reshaping of our existing information literacy program as students’ AI literacy develops in their use of AI tools at California State University, Los Angeles.

ENHANCING INFORMATION LITERACY SKILLS ROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE EMPOWERING 8 MODEL FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

The 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are global goals set by the United Nations to achieve sustainable progress and improve people's quality of life. In the era of digital transformation, information literacy is an important key in achieving the SDGs. In the context of education, literacy plays an important role in achieving the SDGs. This article aims to review various literature on improving information literacy skills through the Empowering Model in the success of the Sustainable Development Goals. The method used by the author is the literature study method. The literature study in this research was taken from various sources, including scientific journals, books, and other literature. The result of this literature study is an empowering 8 model that can be implemented in schools and outside schools to improve the quality of community literacy. The empowering 8 information literacy model includes the ability to identify, explore, select, organize, create, present, assess, and apply information that can benefit individuals and society.

Librarian as Motivator in Virtual Information Literacy Instruction

This study aims to explore librarians’ motivating styles in virtual information literacy instruction sessions based on participating students’ perception. The research method use a quantitative approach, involving a survey method was applied for this study. The survey was conducted involving a sample of 250 students who had attended the virtual information literacy sessions at the selected library. The questionnaire was distributed electronically using Google Form and it comprised of open-ended questions to provide responses regarding the motivation provided by librarians in virtual literacy instruction. The study identified three stages of the virtual information literacy instructions in which librarians applied different motivational styles. The three learning processes: Greeting and Welcome, Core, and Wrap up, each provided evidence of motivating styles. The findings of this investigation are useful to practicing librarians as they can focus on motivating students during the virtual information literacy instruction.

An interdisciplinary assessment of information literacy instruction

Information literacy is a crucial skill often overlooked by faculty in higher education, who expect incoming Gen Z students to have some ability to navigate the information landscape appropriately and efficiently either from prior high school instruction or simply by the ubiquity of information access. Assessments of college students' information literacy paints a different picture, indicating that information literacy instruction is required and that deliberate efforts should be made to aid students in proper evaluation and use of informational media. This study investigates the value of generalized information literacy instruction at a medium-sized, public 4-year university in a rural area. Student knowledge is assessed pre- and post-instruction to determine specific impacts of information literacy instruction on various facets of information literacy – source quality, relevance, and context. Specifically, the purpose of this research is to determine (1) whether information literacy varies across students in different fields/disciplines and (2) if so, whether generalized information literacy instruction tends to close those cross-disciplinary gaps or extend existing disparities. Data collected herein demonstrate that gains in information literacy vary substantially by academic discipline. For example, students in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts began with the second-highest average pre-instruction scores (75.00 %) and exhibited the largest gains between pre- and post-instruction assessments (+12.14 %). The results obtained in this study indicate that generalized instruction tends to inflate existing disparities in information literacy between disciplines. Based on these findings, there is ample evidence to suggest that discipline-specific information literacy instruction could provide students with larger individual gains and potentially allow information literacy to converge across fields.

Mapping the Way: Teaching Music Information Literacy in the Contemporary Information Landscape

abstract: Information literacy instruction in the twenty-first century stands at a crossroads of multiple socio-cultural trends, recent technological advances (specifically, artificial intelligence applications and large language models), shifting professional standards, and new developments in local educational settings. It is now necessary for instructors to act as explorers of the information environments in which they live and work, observing and staying cognizant of these developments while utilizing the principles of information ethics as a compass for guiding their work. In this article, the author explains how developments in local settings, combined with the above factors, can serve as an impetus for reinventing information literacy instruction. The author presents a variety of strategies for teaching information literacy in music in both credit-bearing courses and "one shot" instructional sessions that incorporate existing information literacy standards and values in information ethics. Curriculum mapping is highlighted as a strategy for planning and codifying pedagogical strategies while keeping lesson planning adaptable and responsive to specific learning needs. Recommendations for other instructors acknowledge that the process of delivering effective information literacy instruction in music is ongoing; success will depend upon how instructors choose to respond to contemporary societal developments and the educational needs of students and colleagues at their respective institutions.

Collaborations That Work: Making Connections between Music Library Instruction and Music Theory

abstract: This article explores ways pedagogical approaches in music librarianship and music theory can enhance each other. It emphasizes two broad benefits for students when library instruction is incorporated into music theory courses. First, what music librarians have to offer can be incredibly relevant to music theory instruction. Second, since music majors take music theory early in their degrees, library instruction in these courses allows them to get to know their librarians right away when they enter college. If music librarians provide further instruction and outreach in various ways throughout students' college years, students will be able to see that what they are learning in these sessions is a set of transferrable skills that are not solely useful for one assignment in a single class. This is especially true when teaching information literacy. By drawing on literature from both fields, as well as our own experiences working together, we show how the pedagogical priorities of music theory and music librarianship align. We explain how we have found success in teaching concepts from information literacy as we work toward our shared goals. The article further suggests a number of practical ideas for bridging the gap between music librarians and music theory instructors, including offering flexible options for instruction, team-teaching, and understanding the strengths each person brings to information literacy instruction.

Fostering Critical Thinking Skills in Tertiary-Level Students for Media and Information Literacy

To discern the authenticity of online content, one must possess Media and Information Literacy (MIL). MIL encompasses the knowledge, mindset, and skill set needed to determine what information is necessary, how to access it, when to do so, where to find it, critically evaluate it upon acquisition, and employ it ethically. In the context of fake news, individuals must engage in critical thinking when engaging with the media and content they encounter to prevent misinformation. Some materials may contain misleading content that could be mistaken for humour, misuse, or explicit language or expressions. Hence, the primary objective of this study is to examine how undergraduate students at tertiary-level educational institution employ Critical Thinking to interpret media and information, ultimately enhancing their MIL. This research employs a quantitative research approach, incorporating an online questionnaire and specific media content sourced from social networking platforms. The questionnaire is structured based on the Delphi report, which outlines six fundamental critical thinking skills. 340 participants are asked to indicate whether they have put into practice these skills while examining the provided media materials. The anticipated outcomes indicate a moderate level of critical thinking capability among students in comprehending and critically evaluating media information. This underscores the pressing need to enhance their critical thinking skills to a higher level, enabling them to effectively process a variety of media information. Additionally, the findings illuminate which of the six critical thinking skills delineated in the Delphi report were more commonly employed and how the application of core critical thinking skills in the interpretation of media information varies by gender, year of study, and programme. Critical thinking assumes a pivotal role in MIL as it plays a determining role in assessing the reliability of information sources, swiftly recognising fake news, and effectively sifting through information to uncover the truth.

Development of Heutogogy Model as a Framework to Prepare Self-Determined Educator: A Case Study in Indonesia

This study aims to develop a heutogogy learning model which determines indigenous resources to improve numeracy literacy for high school educator to prepare their educator against disruptive education. This type of research is development research by using the ADDIE method according to two stages, namely (a) exploratory research to identify educator characteristics and needs, and (b) development research to develop a heutogogy model based on educators' needs. Heutogogy model succeeded in increasing educator numeracy literacy in high school as a preparation to create competent educators in a disruptive education era. This model has also succeeded in improving the literacy-numerical skills of teachers as primary agents of the information literacy movement in schools. By improving the educators' numerical skills, the model contributes to their overall information literacy, empowering them to better guide students in the rapidly evolving educational landscape characterized by disruptive changes. Need further research to implement this model on the different competencies with more deep user validation. This research can boost educators' literacy-numerical abilities, which are needed by the world of education in the next 10 years.

21st Century Skills Through STEAM Education: Analysis of School Leaders’ Perspectives

STEAM is an educational approach that strive for developing students’ STEAM skills to meet the demands of the global workforce. This research examined the role of STEAM education in developing 21st century skills, and the factors influencing the integration of STEAM education in the Pakistani education system. It was a descriptive research. A sample of 100 school leaders, 52 male and 48 female, using a simple random method was selected. Researchers made questionnaire based on a five-point Likert scale was used for data collection after confirming its validity and reliability. The instrument's reliability (α =.87) was calculated. The collected data were analyzed it using SPSS (version 26). This study revealed that the majority of the school leaders agreed about developing 21st century skills through STEAM education such as technology and information literacies, problem solving, critical thinking, leadership, social and civic literacy and responsibility. Most of the leaders also agreed regarding the factors influencing the integration of STEAM education in the Pakistani education system, such as lack of resources and infrastructure, ineffective teacher training, traditional teaching methods, cultural barriers, lack of awareness, lack of budget, traditional testing system, limited collaboration with industry, language barriers, and lack of clear guidance in policy and curriculum. Both Male and female leaders were agreed equally regarding 21st century skills and factors influencing integration of STEAM education. This study recommends that Ministry of Education should minimize the aforementioned factors in order to ensure the effective integration of STEAM education in Pakistani education system and in order to develop 21st century skills among students.

The subject of the contribution is the identification of the possibilities and limits of incorporating work with digital forms of textbooks in the undergraduate training of future primary education teachers. The aim of the research was to determine the impact of incorporating additional digital teaching materials into the teaching of future primary education teachers in the master's degree on the level of digital competencies of the research sample. Through the analysis of the output data, we confirmed that the manipulation and mastering of work with digital textbooks and digital teaching materials for primary education within the undergraduate training of teacher students has the ability to positively influence the level of their information and data literacy.

Exploring the Health Literacy Behavior Patterns of Male Patients Using an Interpretable Method.

Improving overall and individual health literacy is a major focus of national initiatives in China and similar initiatives globally. However, few studies have examined the identification and improvement of individual health literacy levels, especially among patients. To develop an interpretable method with decision rules to assess the health literacy levels of male patients and identify key factors influencing health literacy levels. Using a convenience sampling method, we conducted on-site surveys with 212 male patients of a hospital in China from July 2020 to September 2020. The questionnaire was developed by the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China. A total of 206 of the completed surveys were ultimately included for analyses in this study. The rough set theory was used to identify conditional attributes (ie, key factors) and decision attributes (ie, levels of health literacy) and to establish decision rules between them. These rules specifically describe how different combinations of conditional attributes can affect health literacy levels among men. Basic knowledge, concepts, and health skills are important in identifying whether male patients have health literacy. Health skills, scientific health concepts, healthy lifestyles and behaviors, infectious disease prevention and control literacy, basic medical literacy, and health information literacy can be identified as cognitive behaviors with varying degrees of health literacy among patients. This model can effectively identify the key factors and decision rules for male patients' health literacy. Simultaneously, it can be applied to clinical nursing practice, making it easier for hospitals to guide male patients to improve their health literacy.

Combining SIFT and the Information Needs, Types, and Qualities Approaches: A Framework-Informed Strategy for Information Literacy Instruction

Increasingly, librarians are encouraged to deliver information literacy sessions that go beyond finding and using traditional scholarly sources. They are asked to cover a wider range of the information ecosystem and develop students’ capacity to critically engage with Google and the open web. In this study, we incorporated these learning objectives in an introductory computational thinking course, combining two information literacy pedagogies. For evaluating sources, we used Mike Caulfield’s SIFT technique (Stop, Investigate the source, Find better coverage; Trace claims to the original source); for resource discovery, Lane Wilkinson’s Information Needs, Types and Qualities lesson. We adapted Wilkinson’s worksheet, asked students to apply the SIFT technique to their chosen sources, and added a reflection component where students documented their research process. We conducted a content analysis of the assignment responses and coded evidence of students demonstrating knowledge practices and dispositions of two frames from the ACRL Framework, Authority is Constructed and Contextual and Searching as Strategic Exploration. Our analysis showed that students responded well to learning the SIFT technique, particularly at investigating sources; furthermore, Wilkinson’s pedagogy for source discovery encouraged students to use a wide variety of research tools. The reflection component further revealed evidence of students’ research processes and metacognition. We found this unit to be an effective means of assessing these Framework concepts, and argue that it can be applied to other topics and disciplines.

Evaluating English Teachers’ Artificial Intelligence Readiness and Training Needs with a TPACK-Based Model

With the rapid development and widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, the implementation of instructional pedagogy has transformed significantly. English teachers need to understand how AI tools can improve their teaching and must acquire the necessary technical and pedagogical knowledge to effectively utilize AI technology. Although the integration of AI into language teaching shows potential benefits, there remains a dearth of comprehensive research on English teachers’ perceptions, readiness, and professional development requirements in relation to AI.To address these knowledge research gaps, our study aims to evaluate English teachers’ current understanding of AI tools and their training needs for integrating AI into the English language classroom. Our proposed model uses the technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) framework, which incorporates English language teaching and information literacy contexts. This framework allows for a holistic assessment of teachers’ readiness for integrating AI within English language teaching practices.A study was conducted with a class of preservice English teachers in Hong Kong. An online survey was designed to assess the readiness of English teachers for applying AI tools in the classroom as well as their understanding and level of information literacy. This study helped identify and address potential issues with the survey before launching it to a wider audience. Our findings confirmed the validity and reliability of the instrument and indicated that preservice English teacher participants are generally prepared to integrate AI tools into the English classroom. Corelation analysis was also conducted to assess the relationships among the constructs and showed that technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK) and instructional literacy (IL) were significant predictors of the overall TPACK construct. The study suggested professional training in the selection, implementation and progress monitoring of specific AI tools for English Language teaching; pedagogy design; and the ability to search for appropriate resources for the English classroom. The framework can be enhanced by using a mixed-method approach and incorporating a qualitative study to triangulate the findings. An explanatory sequential design will be recommended to collect quantitative data first, then qualitative data will be collected for further analysis.

Distance Learners’ Basic Digital Competence in Higher Education

Basic digital competence is essential for learners in higher education and especially in the field of distance education. The main purpose of this study is to understand the levels of digital competence of distance learners in Turkey according to the variables of age, gender and owing a computer. The participants were consisted of 243 distance learners studying at various disciplines of a state university. Data were collected through a survey via digital competence scale. The findings of the research indicated that basic digital competence of distance learners were high in communication and moderate in problem solving, university’s virtual tools and social communication and information and data literacy. However, distance learners are the least competent in digital content development. In addition, statistical analysis indicated that basic digital competence of distance learners did not differ in terms of gender. On contrary, significant differences existed in the information and data literacy of the students with regard to having a computer and age. The results of the study displayed that it is important to include the improvement of digital competence into the distance education to provide distance learners an opportunity to reach high basic digital competence and to facilitate learning.

Mediating Role of Evidence-Based Nursing Competence Between Specialist Nurses' Information Literacy and Innovative Behaviour: A Multicentre Cross-Sectional Study.

To investigate the levels of information literacy, evidence-based nursing competence and innovative behaviour in specialist nurses, determine the impact of information literacy and evidence-based nursing competence on the innovative behaviour of specialist nurses and to analyse the mediating role of evidence-based nursing competence between information literacy and innovative behaviour among specialist nurses. A multicenter cross-sectional design. In March 2024, a survey was conducted on 313 specialist nurses in four tertiary Grade A comprehensive hospitals in China. Data collection involved the utilization of general demographic questionnaire, the Information Literacy Questionnaire, the Evidence-Based Nursing Competence Scale and the Nurse Innovation Behaviour Scale. The data were analysed using IBM SPSS26 and Amos28 software. Specialist nurses scored above average in information literacy, evidence-based nursing competence and innovative behaviour. Information literacy significantly positively correlated with innovative behaviour. Evidence-based nursing competence also positively affected innovative behaviour and partially mediated the relationship between information literacy and innovative behaviour. This research indicated that specialist nurses exhibited above-average levels of evidence-based nursing competence, information literacy and innovative behaviour. Both information literacy and evidence-based nursing competence positively impacted innovative behaviour, with evidence-based nursing competence playing a significant mediating role between information literacy and innovative behaviour. The findings suggest that nursing managers should focus on enhancing information literacy and evidence-based nursing competence in specialist nurses. Improving these abilities will support the implementation of innovative practices and advance the nursing field. The research findings were presented in strict accordance with the STROBE statement.
