The Value of Scientific Publications in Surgical Device Innovation.

Clinical trials represent a significant risk in the commercialization of surgical technologies. There is incentive for companies to mitigate their regulatory risk by targeting 510K over Premarket Approval (PMA) pathways in order to limit the scope, complexity and cost of clinical trials. As such, not all companies will publish clinical data in the scientific literature. We set out to investigate the relationship between scientific publication by surgical device companies and the impact it has on company valuation. We hypothesize that publishing in the scientific literature correlates with success of the surgical device companies as measured by funding. We first obtained a list of surgical device startup companies and their financial deals using the Pitchbook database. Those companies were then cross referenced with the FDA database and the Dimensions database for product registrations and peer reviewed publications, respectively. Analysis was then performed using these query results. We obtained a list of US surgical device startups financing deals closed between 2010 and 2020 from the Pitchbook database. We queried the Pitchbook for deal dates from January 1, 2010 to January 1, 2020 for deal types spanning early stage investment to IPO. Deals were limited to those conducted in the United States and to the surgical device industry. We queried the FDA database for product registration information associated with each of the companies involved in the deals. We tabulated the number of journal articles associated with surgical device companies using the Dimensions Search API as well as a manual confirmation. Five hundred thirty five (535) deals from 222 companies were found in Pitchbook that met our criteria. Querying the FDA database resulted in 578 registrations associated with these companies. Publications per company ranged widely. Companies that are able to generate a more numerous publications had correspondingly higher valuations during funding rounds. A subset of outstanding companies were analyzed and at least four factors affect: direct value of publications, indirect valve of publications, survivorship bias, and adoption share; each of which will be discussed in this manuscript.

The role of Innovation, Knowledge Management and Entrepreneurial Bricolage to gain Competitive Advantage in textile industry: Moderating effect of Absorptive Capacity and Market Turbulence

The Main purpose of the research was to examine how a textile firm's ability to maintain a competitive advantage is influenced by the interplay between innovation, knowledge management, and entrepreneurial bricolage. In addition, the role of absorptive aptitude as a moderator of these correlations was investigated and evaluated. There was also a focus on the volatility of the market acts as a dampener in the relationships we've already discussed. An entire group of people to whom the results of a study will be applied as a whole is called a population. This research endeavor will focus on the Pakistani textile industry. The 362 members of the All Pakistan Bed Sheets and Upholstery Manufacturing Association (ABUMA) were contacted to compile the list of textile companies. The purpose of this research was to examine the relationships between innovation, knowledge management, entrepreneurial creativity, and competitive advantage. In addition, the study aimed to assess the moderating roles of absorbency and market volatility in the aforementioned correlations. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine the hypotheses. Next, we'll talk about the direct connections between independent and dependent variables, after which we'll analyze how ACAP and MT could modify those associations. Only 3 of the 9 hypotheses tested were correct. Policymakers in the textile industry will find the study's conclusions useful. Companies can use these findings to make strategic decisions that give them an edge in the market. The research shows that firms should place an emphasis on entrepreneurial bricolage if they want to get an edge over their rivals. Consequently, it is suggested that leaders in the sector put in place protocols to make optimal use of the aforementioned resources. They ought to make the most of the resources at their disposal and of the synergies between the various resources.
 

Unravelling the extent of tree planting by corporations

AbstractA growing number of businesses advertise their tree planting engagements even though it is generally outside their core business. Why do they do it? Where do they do it? With whom do they do it? How pervasive is this phenomenon? These are questions we sought to answer for three European countries: France, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. We selected all large corporations from those countries present on the Fortune 500 list of companies and analysed their reports and available documentation to see firstly whether they were engaged in tree planting and if yes, to answer the above questions. Our findings indicate that in the last 22 years, 98% of the large corporations from the three countries reviewed have carried out some tree planting activities, contributing to planting well over 500 million trees.

Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on the Standing of Companies Listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange

Abstract Objective The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic can be observed in many aspects of the functioning of people, economic entities, organisations and countries. One of the areas where this phenomenon has left its mark remains the stock markets. Company listings are influenced by both investor emotions and the economic and financial condition of individual companies. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on individual industries represented by companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Methodology In order to achieve this goal, an analysis was made of the value of changes in the so-called sector indices in the period from the beginning of 2020 to the end of the first half of 2022. This approach to the study will make it possible to determine which industries were most significantly affected by the economic change and what the nature of the possible change was. Quarterly data was used in the research. Findings The results obtained made it possible to note that among the thirteen analysed sectors, we can observe those that lost their value as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic (WIG-medicines, WIG-food, WIG-banks, WIG-clothing), but also those that significantly increased their value in the period under study (WIG-motorisation, WIG-construction, WIG-energy, WIG-IT). Value Added The study conducted will allow for a better understanding of how investors react to crisis events and how this translates into the listing of companies on the stock market. Recommendations The research results obtained require further analysis to establish deeper links between the Covid-19 pandemic and individual sectors of companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, which will be the subject of the author’s further studies.

DETECTION OF FINANCIAL DISTRESS AS AN EFFORT EARLY WARNING SYSTEM FOR COAL MINING COMPANIES LISTED ON THE INDONESIA STOCK EXCHANGE PERIOD 2019 – 2021

This study aims to detect financial distress in coal mining companies listed on the IDX for the 2019-2021 period as an early warning system based on indicators of the BOPO ratio, sales volume growth, liquidity ratio, leverage ratio, and profitability ratios. The population used in this study were 27 coal mining companies. The type of research used is quantitative research through secondary data sources in the form of published financial reports that have been audited by public accountants. The results of this study are divided into 3, namely companies that are not detected in financial distress, companies that are not detected, and companies that are detected in financial distress. From this analysis, there were 9 companies not detected financial distress, 0 companies not detected, and 18 companies detected financial distress.

This study was conducted to examine and analyze the regulation of the authority, position, duties and responsibilities of a Notary and Supervision of the Financial Services Authority. To review and analyze the implementation of regulations on the authority, position, duties and responsibilities of a Notary Public and Supervision of the Financial Services Authority. To review and analyze efforts to regulate the authority, position, duties and responsibilities of a Notary and Supervision of the Financial Services Authority in the development of the capital market industry in Indonesia. This research is a normative juridical research, namely research that is focused on examining the application of rules or norms in positive law by using a legislative potivist conceptional approach, which views that law is identical to written norms that are made and promulgated by institutions or officials who authorities and views the law as a normative system that is autonomous, closed and detached from people's lives. This study describes the facts and data regarding the duties and responsibilities of one of the supporting institutions, namely the Notary before and after the Limited Liability Company listing in the capital market. The results of the study show that the role of a notary in the capital market is a necessity to serve the investment community in fulfilling the mechanism in the capital market. Notaries are public officials authorized to make authentic deeds and are registered with the Financial Services Authority (OJK).

Data from 990 Public Real-World Job Advertisements Organized by O*NET Categories

Text from 990 job advertisements were downloaded from companies on the Fortune 500 2020 list of top companies. These job ads covered 32 different job titles from eight industries. The responsibilities and requirements sections were saved for each job, and, when available, city, state, salary, company size, and other offered text were saved. Data were collected manually by a team of researchers during the summer of 2021 through a systematic search process. The dataset is stored on the OSF. Data can be used for further job advertising analysis and comparison.

The Mediating Effect of Trading Volume on the Relationship between Investor Sentiment and the Return of Tech Companies

This paper investigates the mediation effect of trading volume to explore the relationship between investor sentiment, measured as a volatility forecast (VIX), and the return of tech companies based on the mediation analysis. This paper focuses on Tesla, a list of the 30 largest technology companies and the MSCI World Index. It implements this mediation analysis by using an ARMA-EGARCH model for the time series of Tesla stock and the MSCI World Index returns and a Fixed-Effects regression model for stock returns of the list of 30 technology companies. Estimation results show that trading volume mediates the relationship between investor sentiment and stock returns. The mediating effect found in the case of Tesla and the MSCI World Index is much more present than regarding the list of companies. Furthermore, to obtain an all-encompassing analysis and create less dependence on proxy selection, additional mediation analyses are incorporated that include the 10-year Treasury yields, prices of the Swiss franc currency and the Baker-Wurgler index as investor sentiment proxies. The results show that the mediating effect of the trading volume is present also for these proxies providing more evidence that such a mediating effect is the underlying mechanism in stock markets.

Self-reporting of Conflicts of Interest by Ophthalmology Researchers Compared with the Open Payments Database Industry Reports

To evaluate the completeness of conflict-of-interest self-reporting by ophthalmology researchers and to assess factors associated with self-reporting. Cross-sectional observational study. We evaluated articles published between January and June 2017 in Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology, and Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science. To assess more accurately the cases in which an author published multiple articles, we defined a unit of analysis, authorship, for which each author of each article is a unique data point. To enable comparison with the Open Payments Database (OPD), we only included United States physician authorships. For each authorship, we defined self-reported relationships as the companies listed in the article's conflict-of-interest disclosures. Based on journal policies, we defined OPD-reported relationships as the list of companies that reported payments to the author within 36 months before submission. For each authorship, we assessed the proportion of OPD-reported relationships that were self-reported. The primary measurement was the proportion of authorships reporting none of their OPD-reported relationships. Of the 660 total authorships (486 unique authors), 413 authorships (63%) reported none of their OPD-reported relationships, 112 (17%) reported some of them, 9 (1%) reported all of them, and 126 (19%) had 0 relationships. The proportion of authorships reporting none of their relationships did not differ significantly between journals that required reporting of all relationships compared with journals that required reporting only of relevant relationships (adjusted percentage, 61.4% vs. 64.3%; P= 0.46). Authorships with more dollars received during the reporting period showed higher rates of self-reporting (P < 0.001). Even among journals that required complete reporting, self-reporting was low compared with an industry-maintained database of financial relationships. Deficiencies in reporting may undermine confidence in self-reporting and may compromise the transparency that is needed to interpret research results fairly. Factors Affecting Listing of Small and Medium Enterprises on LuSE Alternative Investment Market in Zambia: A Case of Lusaka Business District

Economic growth in both developed and developing nations is strongly linked to the growth of alternative investment markets. Alternative markets for the listing of start-up companies have been established and launched by many exchanges in order to assist small and medium businesses in raising finance through initial public offers and listing their shares for trade. The rise of these alternative markets has been slow, particularly in poorer countries. The study’s major goal was to discover the characteristics that influence SMEs’ ability to list on the Lusaka Stock Exchange Alternative Investment Market (LuSE AIM). Examine whether information accessibility is a critical factor in determining SMEs listing on the Alt-M; determine if regulatory requirements are a factor to consider when SMEs decide to register on the AIM; determine if corporate governance is an important factor in determining SMEs listing on the AIM; and determine if SMEs support platforms are important factors in determining SMEs listing on the AIM. The study used a quantitative cross-sectional design using a survey as the research approach to attain this goal. The approach was deemed appropriate and useful towards assessing of the elements influencing listing of SME firms on the securities exchange. The population of the study included all 1663 SMEs registered under Zambia Chamber of Small and Medium Businesses Association in Lusaka. Stratified sampling technique was used for the study where random sampled quotas were selected from each industry. The sample size of SMEs derived 322 companies and only 161 SMEs successfully participated in the study as respondents. Primary data were used to obtain information in this study using closed-ended questionnaires. To identify the characteristics that influence the listing of SMEs on the stock market, the study used quantitative analysis and factor analyses. The parameters that determine the listing of SMEs on the Alternative Securities Market were identified using factor analysis. Factor I (information accessibility), Factor II (regulatory needs), Factor III (business governance), and Factor IV (corporate governance) identified as the four elements (SMEs support platforms). Information accessibility, enabling legislative requirements, sound corporate governance, and SMEs support platforms were identified as the barriers to small and medium firms receiving finance through the LuSE Alternative Investment Market, according to the conclusions of the research study. The findings of the study suggest that availability to information is critical to listing, and that a regulatory environment that is friendly to small and medium firms will encourage them to list. Furthermore, while corporate governance is not a prerequisite for SMEs to list, good corporate governance practices have been proven to promote SMEs to list. According to the survey, relevant authorities should educate SMEs on the critical information required for securities market listing so that they may make educated judgments. Policymakers should make it easier for SMEs to expand by enacting favorable policies and making it easier for them to list on the AIM. Corporate governance regulations should be tailored to the structure and environment of SMEs by policymakers. The government should develop an atmosphere that includes support systems tailored to SMEs. Putting support platforms in place increases SMEs’ desire to list.

Evaluating green supply chain performance based on ESG and financial indicators

To reduce carbon emission and enhance social development simultaneously, “Environmental, Social and Governance” (ESG) plays a significant role in supply chain management. The study collected 2,400 financial data and ESG performance of 200 companies from the Clean 200 list of global public companies from 2019 to 2021. It aimed to: 1) evaluate green supply chain performance based on financial indicators and corporate’s ESG performance; 2) use the entropy weight method (EWM) to determine the weight of ESG elements in green supply chain; 3) validate this ESG-based green supply chain performance using real world examples. The results showed that operational performance had the highest weight, followed by environmental performance, and profitability ranked the last. The results suggested that managers should focus more on the governance and environment rather than emphasizing short-term financial benefits. It contributes to the literature by incorporating ESG to evaluate green supply chain performance, which is the first of its kind. The results would be beneficial when people wish to select supply chain partners. They are also conducive to companies’ managers and listed companies when they submit financial reports that need to report ESG performance.

Does the US regional greenhouse gas initiative affect green innovation?

This study measures the impact of the implementation of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) on firms’ green innovation initiatives. We used 20 years of panel data from the Fortune 500 list of the US largest companies. Based on DID, a benchmark regression, the RGGI has a significant adverse effect on the green innovation of Fortune 500 companies, and we verified these findings with multiple robustness tests. As we investigate how energy-intensive industries were affected by RGGI, we found that it slowed down green innovation, but it was not statistically significant. This study provides a novel perspective on how the RGGI influences green innovation in firms and how different types of sectors respond to the policy. The findings indicate that the “weak” Porter Hypothesis has not been confirmed in the present carbon trading market (particularly the RGGI) for Fortune 500 firms in the USA. In terms of policy, we believe that a well-covered and differentiated legislation that fosters green innovation while being realistic about the policy’s goal and the firm’s environmental attitude, like emissions reduction through green innovation, is essential.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s11356-022-23189-0.

Environmental Pollution Liability Insurance and Corporate Performance: Evidence from China in the Perspective of Green Development.

Environmental pollution is an inevitable primary responsibility in the production and management of enterprises, and it is the most severe challenge to achieving green production and sustainable development. Environmental pollution liability insurance (EPLI) can transfer corporate pollution liability to insurance companies, which affects corporate performance to a certain extent. However, the influencing factors of enterprise performance are complex, and EPLI also involves multiple subjects, so the impact of EPLI on enterprise performance is also complex. At first, this paper analyzes the possible relationship between EPLI and corporate performance based on the existing literature; subsequently, based on the list of EPLI-insured companies in 2014 and 2015 published by China’s environmental protection department as a sample, this paper uses a fixed-effects model to conduct an empirical analysis, and the mediating role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) was then examined; finally, heterogeneity analysis of the initial conclusions was conducted. The following conclusions are drawn: firstly, there is a significant negative correlation between EPLI and corporate performance. Secondly, CSR played a mediating role in the effect of EPLI on corporate performance; that is, EPLI inhibited the rise of corporate performance by affecting CSR. Thirdly, the impact of EPLI on corporate performance is heterogeneous in terms of equity nature, corporate pollution level and marketization degree. The results of this paper enrich the economic impact theory of EPLI and have specific practical value for enterprise management and policymakers in the background of the green economy.

On the understanding of the current status of urban air mobility development and its future prospects: Commuting in a flying vehicle as a new paradigm

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) has the potential to disrupt air transportation, providing disruptive innovation not only to aviation but also to mobility systems and urban planning. Underpinned by technological advances in batteries, as well as in electric and distributed propulsion that facilitate the design of novel aircraft types with the capability for Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL), the UAM is attracting the attention of an extensive list of stakeholders, institutions and companies. It also covers a broad range of different areas of interest that have to be considered by a holistic and multidisciplinary approach in order to derive its full potential. This paper aims to provide an in-depth qualitative analysis of relevant aspects of UAM development and implementation. The added value of this paper is in assessing the current status and prospects of the most important UAM areas by analysing them from the literature and practice point of views. The paper also deals with the main challenges and multidisciplinary constraints that might slow down the pace towards the successful application of the subject concept.

The impact of the disclosure characteristics of the application material on the successful listing of companies on China’s Science and Technology Innovation Board

The registration statement, the inquiry letter, and the reply letter are the main application materials for companies wanting to list on the Science and Technology Innovation Board (STAR) need to submit to regulatory agencies In this paper, we aim to study the impact of these three kinds of application materials on the successful listing of companies on STAR market in China through six text characteristics, including Words, Boilerplate, Fog Index, HardInfoMix, Redundancy, and Specificity for the first time. In the empirical analysis, we collect the registration statements and the inquiry-reply letters of 220 listed companies and 64 unlisted companies from June 13, 2019 to January 31, 2021 to perform the regression analysis. The empirical results show that, for registration statements, higher Words and Boilerplate will improve the success rate for listing, but higher Redundancy will lead to the failed listing. For the inquiry-reply letter, only the number of questions contained in the inquiry letter is negatively significantly associated with the initial public offering (IPO) success rate, while the text characteristics of the reply letter have little to do with the IPO success rate.

The Effect of Gearing, Price Earning Ratio, Interest Rate, Risk on Abnormal Return

The purpose of the research is to analyze the effect of gearing, Price Earning Ratio (PER), interest rate, and risk on abnormal return. The research was conducted using secondary data. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The object of the research is to list companies on the Indonesia stock exchange from 2017-2020. The analysis method used is multiple linear regression analysis. By using regression analysis, the study provides evidence that all the independent variables such as gearing, Price Earning Ratio, and risk haven’t a significant positive effect on abnormal returns. Only one variable which is interest rate that has a significant positive effect on abnormal returns.

WHY INVEST GLOBALLY IN FAMILY FIRMS

Purpose- Family firms have a significant economic role in many countries around the world. Family firms make a significant contribution to World GDP and employ a significant part of the global workforce. The scope of this study covers the top 25 largest and publicly owned family firms announced by Ernst &amp; Young’s 2021 Report for Family Businesses. These 25 family firms generated more than 2 trillion USD and employed 6.5 million in 2021. This empirical study aims to investigate the excess stock returns of family firms over the related country stock market indexes and the risks (betas) for the period between 2002 and 2021. Therefore, this study explores the question of “why invest globally in family firms and whether this investment pays off with higher returns and less risk”. Methodology- The World's Largest Family Companies" list is published every other two years by Ernst &amp; Young and the last issue was published in 2021. The world’s largest family companies list includes both private and publicly owned family firms. This study employs 25 world’s largest family firms after the exclusion of privately held family firms. The monthly stock prices of family firms, related country stock market index values, and global stock market index values are obtained from Refinitiv Eikon (Reuters) database for the period between 2002 and 2021 (20 years). Therefore, a total of 9120 observations are extracted for this empirical study. Eviews-10 is utilized for all econometric analysis. Findings- This study investigates whether an individual or intuitional investor can earn more than the average return of the stock markets by investing in publicly traded family firms meanwhile exposing less risk. The empricial results reveal that Maersek shows 354% (beta of 1.18) excess return over the 20 year period and followed by Hanwha with a 335% (beta of 0.69) excess return. Later, all family firms are grouped based on country of headquartered and 7 country portfolios are formed. The highest excess returns are provided by South Koean portfolio (an excess return of 189% with a beta of 0.83) and it is followed by Indian portfolio (an excess return of 174% with a beta of 1.0). Finaly, a best performer portfolio is formed by the 10 family firms with highest excess returns. This portfolio provides a 131% excess return with a beta of 1.18 over 20-year peirod. Conclusion- The empirical results show that the individual firm returns and portfolio returns of family firms are higher than the returns of the stock market indexes. Those who invest in family businesses get higher returns with less risk. Investments in publicly traded family firms pay off. Keywords: Family firms, global investment, return, risk, stock markets. The population in this study were 23 companies and the sampling technique was purposive sampling method. The sample is 13 companies and obtained 65 observational data. The results that there was a positive and significant effect between DER on ROE Profitability. There was no positivie and significant effect between DAR and ROE Profitability. There is a negative and significant effect between LDER and ROE Profitability. There is no positiv and signficant effect between LDAR and ROE profitability. There is a positive and significant effect between DER, DAR, LDER, LDAR simultaneously on ROE Profitability.
