Palmitoylethanolamide in Postmenopausal Metabolic Syndrome: Current Evidence and Clinical Perspectives.

Menopause leads to a decline in estrogen levels, resulting in significant metabolic alterations that increase the risk of developing metabolic syndrome-a cluster of conditions including central obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. Traditional interventions such as hormone replacement therapy carry potential adverse effects, and lifestyle modifications alone may not suffice for all women. This review explores the potential role of palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), an endogenous fatty acid amide, in managing metabolic syndrome during the postmenopausal period. PEA primarily acts by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPAR-α), influencing lipid metabolism, energy homeostasis, and inflammation. Evidence indicates that PEA may promote the browning of white adipocytes, enhancing energy expenditure and reducing adiposity. It also improves lipid profiles by boosting fatty acid oxidation and decreasing lipid synthesis, potentially lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels while increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory properties of PEA enhance insulin sensitivity by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines that interfere with insulin signaling. PEA may aid in weight management by influencing appetite regulation and improving leptin sensitivity. Furthermore, its neuroprotective effects may address the mood disturbances and cognitive decline associated with menopause. Given these multifaceted biological activities and a favorable safety profile, PEA may represent a promising non-pharmacological supplement for managing metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal women. However, further large-scale clinical studies are necessary to establish its efficacy, optimal dosing, and long-term safety. If validated, PEA could become an integral part of strategies to improve metabolic and neuropsychological health outcomes in this population.

Blood Lipid Polygenic Risk Score Development and Application for Atherosclerosis Ultrasound Parameters.

Background: The present study investigates the feasibility of using three previously published genome-wide association studies (GWAS) results on blood lipids to develop polygenic risk scores (PRS) for population samples from the European part of the Russian Federation. Methods: Two population samples were used in the study - one from the Ivanovo region (n = 1673) and one from the Vologda region (n = 817). We investigated three distinct approaches to PRS development: using the straightforward PRS approach with original effect sizes and fine-tuning with PRSice-2 and LDpred2. Results: In total, we constructed 56 PRS scales related to four lipid phenotypes: low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. Compared with previous results for the Russian population, we achieved an additional R2 increase of 2-4%, depending on the approach and lipid phenotype studied. Overall, the R2 PRS estimates approached those described for other populations. We also evaluated the clinical utility of blood lipid PRS for predicting carotid and femoral artery atherosclerosis. Specifically, we found that PRS for total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides were positively correlated with ultrasound parameters of carotid and femoral artery atherosclerosis (ρ = 0.09-0.13, p < 0.001), whereas PRS for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were inversely correlated with the number of plaques in the femoral arteries (ρ = -0.08, p = 8.71 × 10-3). Conclusions: PRS fine-tuning using PRSice-2 add LDpred2 improves the performance of blood lipid PRS. Our study demonstrates the potential for further use of blood lipid PRS for prediction of atherosclerosis risk.

Effects of resveratrol on the lipid profile of post-menopause women: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Postmenopausal women experience an increase in cardiovascular, sexual, and emotional changes that can significantly impact their quality of life. Although phytoestrogens offer therapeutic benefits, our understanding of resveratrol's effects remains limited. This study aims to evaluate the effects of using resveratrol on the lipid profile of postmenopausal women. We conducted a systematic review using search terms like "postmenopausal" and "resveratrol" and their synonyms. Two reviewers handled study selection and data extraction. Randomized clinical trials assessing resveratrol in post-menopausal women were included. The meta-analysis on total cholesterol levels found no significant difference between groups, Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) -0.09 (95% Confidence Interval (CI) -0.39 to 0.22, p=0.59; I2=0%, 2 studies, low-quality evidence). No significant differences were found in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, SMD 0.00 (95% CI -0.31 to 0.31, p=1; I2=0%, 2 studies, low-quality evidence), Low-Density Lipoprotein (LCD) levels, SMD -0.10 (95% CI -0.40 to 0.21, p=0.54; I2=0%, 2 studies, low-quality evidence), and triglyceride levels, SMD -0.12 (95% CI -0.18 to 0.43, p=0.43; I2=0%, 2 studies, low-quality evidence). This review concludes there's limited evidence for recommendations; further studies with higher doses, longer supplementation durations, and exploration of outcomes are needed to clarify therapeutic potential.

Metabolic syndrome in association with novel dietary index, metabolic parameters, nesfatin-1 and omentin-1

BackgroundMetabolic syndrome is a prevalent and common health problem and numerous studies have revealed the role of diet and lifestyle change in prevention of metabolic syndrome. However, the novel dietary index, cardioprotective index (CPI) and its association with metabolic syndrome is not investigated yet. In the current study, we evaluated the association between metabolic syndrome and its components, CPI, Nesfatin-1 and Omentin-1in a cross-sectional study.MethodsThree hundred forty eight overweight and obese individuals with metabolic syndrome were recruited. Subjects underwent anthropometric and laboratory assays including metabolic markers, Nesfatin-1 and Omentin-1 with commercial kits.ResultsThose at the first tertile of CPI had lower high density lipoprotein concentrations (HDL) and higher low density lipoprotein concentrations (LDL), triglyceride (TG), systolic and diastolic blood pressures (SBP, DBP) levels compared with those at the highest tertiles (P < 0.05). After adjustment for the confounding effects of age, sex, body mass index, physical activity and total calorie intake, LDL lost its significance across CPI tertiles. Moreover, serum total cholesterol, insulin and insulin resistance were not significant across CPI tertiles neither in crude nor in adjusted models (P > 0.05). Additionally, being at the third tertile of CPI was accompanied with significantly higher Nesfatin-1 and Omentin-1 levels compared with lowest tertiels (P < 0.05) in crude and confounder – adjusted models. Conclusions: To our findings, CPI was in positive relationship with metabolic parameters, blood pressure, Nesfatin-1 and Omentin-1 levels in metabolic syndrome. Effects of Marine-Derived Components on Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors and Gut Microbiota Diversity.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), which comprise coronary heart disease, hypertension, and stroke, collectively represent the number one cause of death globally. Atherosclerosis is the dominant cause of CVDs, and its risk factors are elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides, hypertension, cigarette smoking, obesity, and diabetes mellitus. In addition, diverse evidence highlights the role played by inflammation and clonal haematopoiesis, eventually leading to immunity involvement. The human microbiota project and subsequent studies using next-generation sequencing technology have indicated that thousands of different microbial species are present in the human gut. Disturbances in the gut microbiota (GM) composition, i.e., gut dysbiosis, have been associated with diseases ranging from localised gastrointestinal disorders to metabolic and cardiovascular illnesses. Of note, experimental studies suggested that GM, host immune cells, and marine-derived ingredients work together to ensure intestinal wall integrity. This review discusses current evidence concerning the links among GM, marine-derived ingredients, and human inflammatory disease. In detail, we summarise the impact of fish-derived proteins/peptides and algae components on CVD risk factors and gut microbiome. Furthermore, we describe the interplay among these dietary components, probiotics/prebiotics, and CVDs.

Effects of multicomponent exercise intervention on cardiometabolic risk factors in children and young adults with cerebral palsy: a multiple-baseline trial.

Adults with cerebral palsy (CP) have a high risk of cardiometabolic diseases. It is unknown whether this risk is elevated in young people with CP and whether exercise can reduce this risk. Therefore, we investigated the effects of the EXErcise for Cerebral Palsy (EXECP) intervention on cardiometabolic risk in children and young adults with CP and compared this risk to typically developing children and young adults (TDs). Ambulatory male and female participants with spastic CP, aged 9-24 years, and age- and sex-matched TDs without musculoskeletal disorders were recruited. Participants with CP were measured at baseline, after a three-month control period manifesting normal development, and after the three-month strength, gait, and flexibility training intervention. TDs were measured at baseline and after the control period. They did not attend the intervention. Cardiometabolic risk factors included body weight, body fat percentage, and skeletal muscle mass index assessed with bioimpedance; resting systolic and diastolic blood pressure and aortic pulse wave velocity assessed with a non-invasive oscillometric device; fasting plasma high-density and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, and glucose levels. Data were analyzed with independent samples t-tests and linear mixed-effects models adjusted for sex and age. The study involved 18 participants with CP (13 males, 9-22year, mean 14.2 ± 4.4) and 17 TDs (12 males, 9-22year, mean 14.6 ± 4.3). At baseline, participants with CP had a 1.0 (95% confidence interval (CI) [-2.0, -0.0]) kg/m2 lower skeletal muscle mass index than TDs. During the control period, no statistically significant between-group differences were observed in the change of any outcome. In the CP group, body weight (β = 1.87, 95% CI [1.04, 2.70]), fat percentage (β = 1.22 [0.07, 2.37], and blood glucose (β = 0.19, 95% CI [0.01, 0.37]) increased, while diastolic blood pressure (β=-2.31, 95% CI [-4.55, -0.06]) and pulse wave velocity (β=-0.44, 95% CI [-0.73, -0.16]) decreased. In the TD group, only body weight increased (β = 0.85, 95% CI [0.01, 1.68]) statistically significantly. In the CP group, no changes were observed during the intervention. Young people with and without CP do not exhibit significant differences in most cardiometabolic risk factors. EXECP intervention may attenuate some adverse development trajectories occurring without the intervention but greater volume and intensity of aerobic exercise may be needed to reduce cardiometabolic risk. Mechanistic studies on the alleviation of lipid accumulation and oxidative stress by Majia pomelo seed oil

In this study, hot-pressed Majia pomelo seed oil (MPSO), which has high oxidative stability and antioxidant capacity, was used to study the effects and potential mechanisms of lipid accumulation and oxidative stress. The results indicated that the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), and triglycerides (TG) levels in HepG2 cells were lowest when the MPSO concentration was 0.5 mg/mL. At this concentration, MPSO could alleviate oleic acid (OA)-induced lipid accumulation, reduce intracellular lipid level, and decrease lipid and cholesterol synthesis by increasing AMPK phosphorylation and down-regulating the expression levels of genes and proteins of ACC, SREBP-1c, PPAR-γ, and FAS. Meanwhile, MPSO can reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content and enhance superoxide dismutase (SOD) content in HepG2 cells by down-regulating the expression levels of Nrf2, γ-GCS, and HO-1 genes and proteins, thus acting as an anti-oxidative stress. In addition, molecular docking results indicated that the active ingredients of MPSO could effectively bind AMPK protein and Keap1 protein, which further demonstrated that MPSO could alleviate lipid accumulation and oxidative stress.

Assessment of Paraoxonase 1 and Arylesterase Activities and Lipid Profile in Bodybuilders: A Comparative Study of Physical Activity and Anthropometry on Atherosclerosis.

Background and Objectives: Atherosclerosis, driven by dyslipidaemia and oxidative stress, is a leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This study evaluates the effects of vigorous-intensity bodybuilding exercise (VIBBE) on atherosclerosis biomarkers-including paraoxonase-1 (PON1) and arylesterase (ARE) activities-and lipid profiles in male bodybuilders who do not use anabolic-androgenic steroids. Comparisons were made with individuals engaged in moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (MIAE), as well as overweight/obese sedentary (OOS) and normal-weight sedentary (NWS) individuals. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 122 healthy male participants aged 18-45 years, divided into four groups: VIBBE (n = 31), OOS (n = 30), MIAE (n = 32), and NWS (n = 29). Anthropometric assessments were performed, and fasting blood samples were collected for biochemical analyses, including lipid profiles and PON1 and ARE activities. Statistical analyses compared the groups and evaluated correlations between adiposity measures and atherosclerosis biomarkers. Results: The VIBBE group exhibited significantly lower levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and logarithm of the TG to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio [log(TG/HDL-C)] compared to the OOS group (p < 0.05 for all), indicating improved lipid profiles. However, these improvements were not significant when compared to the NWS group (p > 0.05), suggesting that VIBBE may not provide additional lipid profile benefits beyond those associated with normal weight status. PON1 and ARE activities were significantly lower in the VIBBE group compared to the MIAE group (p < 0.05 for both), suggesting that VIBBE may not effectively enhance antioxidant defences. Correlation analyses revealed significant inverse relationships between PON1 and ARE activities and adiposity measures, including body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body fat percentage (BFP), fat mass index (FMI), and obesity degree (OD) (p < 0.05 for all). Positive correlations were observed between oxLDL and log(TG/HDL-C) and adiposity measures (p < 0.05 for all). Conclusions: Vigorous-intensity bodybuilding exercise improves certain lipid parameters compared to sedentary obese individuals but does not significantly enhance antioxidant enzyme activities or further improve lipid profiles beyond those observed in normal-weight sedentary men. Conversely, moderate-intensity aerobic exercise significantly enhances PON1 and ARE activities and improves lipid profiles, offering superior cardiovascular benefits. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating moderate-intensity aerobic exercise into physical activity guidelines to optimize cardiovascular health by balancing improvements in lipid metabolism with enhanced antioxidant defences.

Elevated Serum Syndecan-1 Levels Are Associated with Obesity-Related Complications in Children

Background: Syndecan-1 plays a crucial role in cell differentiation, growth, adhesion, wound healing, and inflammatory processes. It has been linked to obesity, particularly overweight and chronic low-grade inflammation. Objectives: This study aimed to compare serum syndecan-1 levels between obese children and a healthy control group and to investigate the relationship between serum syndecan-1 levels and renal and cardiovascular complications associated with obesity in children. Methods: We assessed 30 obese and 30 healthy children aged 8 - 16 years. Blood samples were collected from both groups to measure serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), syndecan-1, fasting blood glucose (FBG), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), creatinine, and urea concentrations. In the obese group, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), insulin, triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels were also measured, along with homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Results: The mean serum syndecan-1 levels in the obese and control groups were 15.65 ± 10.01 ng/mL and 6.99 ± 3.79 ng/mL, respectively, with a significantly higher level observed in the obese group (P &lt; 0.005). Significant differences were also found in BMI, BMI SDS, creatinine, AST, and ALT levels between the two groups (P &lt; 0.05), with all parameters being higher in the obese group. A significant positive linear association was identified between syndecan-1 levels and creatinine, TG, and BMI SDS (r = 0.711, r = 0.630, r = 0.682, P &lt; 0.01). Additionally, a strong negative correlation was found between syndecan-1 and HDL-C levels (r = -0.609, P &lt; 0.001). No significant linear relationship was detected between syndecan-1 levels and LDL-C, ALT, AST, glucose, urea, insulin levels, or HOMA-IR measurements (P &gt; 0.05). Linear regression analysis revealed that serum creatinine levels and BMI SDS were significantly linked to changes in syndecan-1 levels. Conclusions: Syndecan-1 is elevated in obese children due to inflammation and may serve as an early biomarker for endothelial damage. It can be useful in detecting obesity-related renal damage and cardiovascular risk in children.

Genetic Susceptibility to Hidradenitis Suppurativa and Predisposition to Cardiometabolic Disease

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is associated with an increased prevalence of cardiovascular diseases compared with the general population. Any association between polygenic risk for HS, risk of incident cardiometabolic outcomes, and the plasma proteome is unclear. To investigate the genetic correlation between HS and cardiometabolic disease. This cohort study used a polygenic risk score (PRS) for HS to examine the risks of coronary artery disease (CAD) and diabetes and identify changes in the plasma proteome in individuals of European ancestry from the UK Biobank. Participants were enrolled from January 1, 2006, to December 31, 2010. End of follow-up was January 1, 2023. Correlations were assessed between HS susceptibility and cardiometabolic traits using linkage disequilibrium score regression. Odds ratios were assessed in logistic regressions. The risk of incident CAD and diabetes was estimated in cause-specific survival models designed as time-to-event analyses. The PRS for HS. Main outcomes were CAD and diabetes diagnosis measured by logistic regressions and incident disease measured by Cox proportional hazards regression models adjusted for sex, age, body mass index, and smoking status. The study included 391 481 individuals (median [IQR] age, 58 [51-64] years; 209 235 [53%] female). Genetic variants for HS correlated significantly with variants associated with CAD, diabetes, and plasma levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and C-reactive protein. Compared with the low-risk group, a high PRS for HS (≥75th percentile) conferred odds ratios of 1.09 (95% CI, 1.06-1.12; P < .001) for CAD and 1.13 (95% CI, 1.10-1.17; P < .001) for diabetes. Estimates remained consistent when examining only incident CAD and diabetes. The PRS for HS was significantly associated with altered expression of 58 plasma proteins. Integrating this proteomic profile and the PRS for HS in a machine learning model improved prediction of CAD and diabetes compared with a reference model based on sex, age, and body mass index. These findings suggest that a high genetic risk of HS is associated with increased risk of subsequent CAD and diabetes and altered composition of the plasma proteome. Additional investigation into the identified proteins and their potential roles as drug targets is warranted.

Toxicogenomic assessment of hydroxylated metabolites of PBDEs on cetaceans: An in vitro study

Despite their ban, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are frequently detected in various environmental compartments including marine and coastal ecosystems due to their persistence, bio-accumulative, high production volumes, and widespread use. One of the major concerns from PBDEs is the transformation products, such as hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-BDEs), which are more bioactive than the parent compounds. For example, 6-hydroxy-2,2′,4’,4-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (6-OH-BDE-47) is a typical metabolite of PBDEs and cause endocrine system disruption, developmental toxicity, and neurotoxicity in different species. Despite being widely detected in marine environments, investigations on the toxicological mechanisms of 6-OH-BDE-47 in cetaceans remain scarce. High concentrations of PBDEs accumulate in cetaceans due to the long lifespan and large fat reserve. The accumulated PBDEs have become the major source of OH-BDEs in cetaceans. We exposed immortalized fibroblast cell lines from the skin of pygmy killer whales (PKW-LWHT) and Indo-Pacific finless porpoises (FP-LWHT) to 6-OH-BDE-47 and analyzed changes in cellular function using transcriptomic data, along with enzymatic activity. Exposure to the body-relevant body burdens of 6-OH-BDE-47 (250 and 500 ng mL−1) significantly decreased cell viability. Differentially expressed genes in FP-LWHT exposed to 6-OH-BDE-47 were primarily enriched in the pathways associated with steroid metabolism. Total cholesterol was decreased by 6-OH-BDE-47, whereas low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels were significantly increased in FP-LWHT cells. In contrast, glycolysis was the main enriched function of differentially expressed genes in PKW-LWHT cells exposed to 6-OH-BDE-47, and the enzyme activity of phosphofructokinase and hexokinase was upregulated. Thus, even though the cell viability of both cell lines from these two species was significantly suppressed by 6-OH-BDE-47, the cellular response or affected cellular function was different between the Pygmy killer whale and the Indo-Pacific Finless Porpoise, suggesting a diverse response towards OH-BDEs exposure.

Isoflavones obtained from red clover improve both dyslipidemia and menopausal symptoms in menopausal women: a prospective randomized placebo-controlled trial

Objective This study aimed to investigate the effects of red clover isoflavones on menopausal symptoms and the lipid profile in menopausal females. Methods This study included postmenopausal women with dyslipidemia. The red clover group (n = 39) received 40 mg isoflavone red clover capsule twice daily for 6 months, while placebo (n = 36) was 40 mg starch capsule twice daily. Data were collected at baseline, 3 months and 6 months. The Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) was applied to calculate subdimension and total scores. Results The two groups were similar in terms of age, MRS and lipid profile at baseline. In the red clover group, MRS scores decreased significantly at both 3 and 6 months. Similarly, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglyceride levels decreased at both 3 months and 6 months. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol increased significantly from baseline to 3 months and 6 months. Except for LDL-C and MRS urogenital score at 3 months, the improvements were significantly in favor of red clover isoflavone treatment. Conclusions Red clover treatment for 3–6 months demonstrated significant improvements in lipid profiles and menopausal symptoms. While promising, further research is crucial to ascertain long-term safety and recommend the use of red clover isoflavones during menopause.

Correlation analysis of occupational stress and metabolic syndrome among employees of a power grid enterprise in China.

Being in a state of high occupational stress may disrupt the metabolic balance of the body, thus increasing the risk of metabolic diseases. However, the evidence about the relationship between occupational stress and metabolic syndrome was limited. To explore the association between occupational stress and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in employees of a power grid enterprise. A total of 1091 employees were recruited from a power grid enterprise in China. Excluding those who failed to complete the questionnaire and those who had incomplete health check-ups, 945 subjects were included in the study. Assessment of occupational stress was used by job demand-control (JDC) and effort-reward imbalance (ERI) questionnaires, respectively. The information on body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were collected. The levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and fasting blood glucose (FBG) in the fasting venous blood samples were measured. Logistic regression analysis and multiple linear regression methods were used to analyze the correlation between JDC and ERI models of occupational stress, metabolic syndrome, and its components, respectively. The prevalence of MetS was 8.4% and 9.9% in JDC and ERI model high occupational stress employees, respectively. ERI model occupational stress and smoking are significantly associated with the risk of MetS. ERI ratio was significantly associated with lower HDL-C levels. Gender, age, marital status, smoking, high-temperature and high-altitude work were significantly associated with metabolic component levels. Our study revealed a high detection rate of occupational stress in both JDC and ERI models among employees of a power grid enterprise. ERI model occupational stress, demanding more attention, was associated with the risk of MetS as well as its components such as HDL-C.

Frequency of lipoprotein(a) testing and its levels in Pakistani population.

Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a highly atherogenic particle identified as an independent risk factor for the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). This study aimed to investigate the frequency of Lp(a) testing and the incidence of elevated Lp(a) levels in the Pakistani population. For this observational study, Lp(a) and lipid profile data from five years (June 2015 to October 2020) were acquired from the electronic patient records of a diagnostic laboratory with a countrywide network. The association of age and total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), non-HDL, and triglyceride (TG) levels with two thresholds for Lp(a), that is, <30 mg/dL and ≥30 mg/dL, was calculated using the Kruskal-Wallis test, while the association between Lp(a) levels and lipid variables was calculated using Spearman correlation. For five years, 1060 tests were conducted, averaging 212 tests per year. Of these, 37.2% showed Lp(a) levels above 30 mg/dL. No significant differences were observed in the results between males and females. However, younger individuals displayed significantly higher Lp(a) levels. Additionally, there was only a weak correlation between the Lp(a) levels and other lipid variables. Despite being recognized as a risk factor for ASCVD in the Pakistani population, only a small proportion of the large population underwent Lp(a) testing. Moreover, a significant proportion of the population exceeded this threshold.

The effect of ambient temperature on lipid metabolism in children: From a prospective cohort study

BackgroundDyslipidemia is increasingly recognized as an essential risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. However, few studies illustrated the effects of ambient temperature exposure (TE) on lipid levels in children. The study aimed to examine the association between ambient TE and lipid levels in children. MethodsBased on a prospective cohort, a total of 2423 children (with 4466 lipids measure person-time) were collected from 2014 to 2019. The meteorological observation data and adjusted variables were collected. Mixed-effect models and generalized additive mixed model (GAMM) were applied to investigate the association between ambient TE and lipid levels. ResultsA significant negative association was observed between TE and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) or total cholesterol (TC) levels both in all children [LDL-C, β(95%CI) = −0.350(-0.434,-0.265), P < 0.001; TC, β(95%CI) = −0.274(-0.389,-0.160), P < 0.001] and by different sex group. However, no significant association was found in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) or triglycerides (TG) levels. The estimated optimal ambient TEs for LDL-C were 18.273 °C and 18.024 °C for girls and boys, respectively. For TC, the optimal ambient TEs were 17.949 °C and 18.024 °C, respectively. With ambient TE decreased, the risk of dyslipidemia increased for both boys [OR = 0.032(0.006,0.179), P < 0.001] and girls [OR = 0.582(0.576,0.587), P < 0.001]. ConclusionThis study provided a comprehensive illustration about the associations between ambient TE and lipid levels in different sex and ages from a prospective cohort study. The findings will provide evidence for the government to prevent dyslipidemia in vulnerable children through regulating TE.

Effects of potassium diformate on growth performance, apparent digestibility of nutrients, serum biochemical indices, and intestinal microflora in Cherry Valley ducks

This study was performed to investigate the effects of potassium diformate (KDF) on growth performance, apparent digestibility of nutrients, serum biochemical indices, and intestinal microflora of Cherry Valley ducks. In total, 144 female healthy 1-day-old Cherry Valley ducks were divided into 3 groups with 6 replicates per group and 8 ducks per replicate according to the principle of similar body weight. The control group was fed a basic diet. In the 2 experimental groups, 0.8% and 1.2% KDF was added to the basic diet, respectively. The trial period was 6 wk and the pretrial period was 3 wk. The final weight and ADG were significantly higher in the 0.8% KDF group than in the control group (P < 0.05). The feed-to-gain ratio was significantly lower in both KDF groups than in the control group (P < 0.05). The apparent digestibility of CP was significantly higher in both KDF groups than in the control group (P < 0.05). The apparent digestibility of calcium was also significantly higher in the 0.8% KDF group (P < 0.05). The serum levels of alkaline phosphatase, cholesterol, and total protein were significantly lower in the 0.8% KDF group than in the control group (P < 0.05), the IgM content was significantly higher (P < 0.05), the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, and urea levels were significantly lower (P < 0.01), and the glucose level was significantly higher (P < 0.01). The serum total protein level was significantly higher in the 1.2% KDF group than in the control group (P < 0.05). The relative abundance of Firmicutes and Patescibacteria in the gut of ducks was significantly higher in the 0.8% KDF group than in the control group (P < 0.05), the relative abundance of unclassified Erysipelotrichaceae and Lactobacillus was significantly higher (P < 0.01), and the relative abundance of Fusobacteriota was significantly lower (P < 0.05). However, the relative abundance of Firmicutes in the gut of ducks was significantly higher in the 1.2% KDF group than in the control group (P < 0.05). The relative abundance of unclassified Erysipelotrichaceae and Clostridium sensu stricto 1 was significantly higher (P < 0.01), as was the relative abundance of Fusobacteriota and Proteobacteria (P < 0.05). These findings indicate that the addition of 0.8% KDF to the diet can improve the growth performance of Cherry Valley ducks, promote the absorption of nutrients, change the structure of the microflora in the cecum, and increase the relative abundance of dominant bacteria. It was also shown that there was a significant difference between the 0.8% and 1.2% KDF levels which suggest that the safety margin for overdosing is quite low.

Clinical Features, Investigative Profile and Association with Metabolic Syndrome in Facial Acanthosis Nigricans: A Case–Control Study in Indian Patients

Objectives: The present study was undertaken to study the clinical profile and laboratory abnormalities in patients with facial acanthosis nigricans (FANs). The significance of FAN as a marker of insulin resistance (IR), metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components was determined by comparing with controls without FAN. Materials and Methods: Fifty clinically diagnosed cases of FAN of all ages and both sexes were enrolled. Age- and sex-matched obese patients without FAN were included as controls. Waist circumference, blood pressure and body mass index were measured. Venous samples were taken from all patients and controls for measuring fasting glucose level, fasting insulin levels and fasting lipid profile. Statistical analysis was done using the Chi-square test and unpaired t-test. Results: The prevalence of hypertension, dysglycaemia, hyperlipidaemia, elevated Homeostatic Model Assessment for IR (HOMA-IR) and MS was significantly higher in cases of FAN than controls (P &lt; 0.05). The mean levels of fasting blood sugar, HOMA-IR, hypertension, high-density lipoprotein and serum triglycerides were significantly higher in patients of FAN than controls (P &lt; 0.05). The odds ratio for FAN cases developing MS was determined to be 5.31. Conclusion: FAN may be considered as a significant clinical marker of IR with increased risk for MS and its component when compared to controls. All patients with FAN should be considered for a thorough biochemical workup to rule out MS. In all detected cases, it is prudent to initiate prompt remedial measures including lifestyle changes and pharmacotherapy to prevent long-term morbidity and mortality.

Gender-Affirming Hormone Treatment and Metabolic Syndrome Among Transgender Veterans.

Gender-affirming hormone treatment (GAHT) is a common therapy for transgender individuals to reduce gender dysphoria and improve quality of life. Clarifying the long-term effects of GAHT remains a priority in transgender health research. To explore whether sex hormones (estradiol and testosterone) are associated with the development of metabolic syndrome in transgender veterans compared with cisgender veterans. This retrospective, longitudinal cohort study used International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision and International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision diagnosis codes for gender dysphoria from the Veterans Health Administration national database to identify transfeminine and transmasculine veterans receiving documented feminizing (estradiol) or masculinizing (testosterone) treatment from January 1, 2006, to December 31, 2019, and for whom the GAHT initiation date and metabolic syndrome component-related data were available. Transgender veterans were matched to cisgender referents. Gender-affirming hormone treatment. Metabolic syndrome z-scores were calculated based on body mass index, systolic blood pressure, and levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood glucose. Changes in mean z-scores were compared among the transgender and cisgender groups before and after the index date (corresponding to GAHT initiation) using a repeated-measures analysis of variance model. The cohort included 1290 participants: 645 transgender (494 [38.3%] transfeminine, 151 [11.7%] transmasculine) and 645 cisgender (280 [21.7%] female, 365 [28.3%] male). Mean (SD) age at the index date was 41.3 (13.2) years. Metabolic syndrome z-scores changed significantly over time and differed significantly across groups. Overall, transmasculine veterans had the greatest percentage increase in mean (SEM) z-scores after vs before the index date (298.0% [57.0%]; P < .001), followed by cisgender females (108.3% [27.5%]; P < .001), cisgender males (49.3% [27.5%]; P = .02), and transfeminine persons (3.0% [10.7%]; P = .77). In this cohort study, in both cisgender and transgender veterans, estradiol was associated with reduced metabolic syndrome risk, whereas testosterone was associated with increased risk. However, transmasculine individuals had the greatest risk and transfeminine individuals had the lowest risk of metabolic syndrome associated with these hormones. This is relevant for the management of metabolic syndrome risk factors in cisgender and transgender individuals and to potentially predict the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, systolic hypertension, insulin resistance, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Effect of the Combined Treatment of Taoren Chengqi Decoction with Laser Photocoagulation on Diabetic Retinopathy

This study investigates the therapeutic effect of the combined treatment of Taoren Chengqi decoction with laser photocoagulation on DR. In animal experiments, A total of 18 rats were used and randomly divided into blank groups, model groups, and treatment groups. The rats in the model group and treatment group were intraperitoneally injected with 60 mg/kg streptozotocin. Moreover, the TCT group was gavaged with Tao-ren Cheng-qi decoction, while the other groups received an equivalent volume of normal saline once daily for 8 weeks. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) and serum interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1β were determined. In the clinical trial, a total of 80 patients with DR were divided into a laser group (treated with laser photocoagulation) and a combination group (treated with laser photocoagulation+Taoren Chengqi decoction). The central macular thickness (CMT), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides, glycated hemoglobin, and hypoxia-inducible factor 1α were measured in the patients. In animal experiments, we observe that Tao-ren Cheng-qi decoction can effectively reduce the levels of FBG, IL-6, and IL-1β in rats models with DR. Clinical studies revealed that the combination of Taoren Chengqi decoction with laser photocoagulation reduced the levels of blood glucose and lipid-related indices, and improved the inflammatory state, BCVA, and CMT. Therefore, this study suggests that the combined treatment of laser surgery and Taoren Chengqi decoction can be considered an optimal therapeutic approach for patients with DR.

Incidence and predictors of new-onset atrial fibrillation in ST-elevation myocardial infarction: A single-center study.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia that occurs following ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and can significantly impact clinical outcomes. We investigated the incidence and predictors of AF following STEMI in patients, as well as its association with major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE). We conducted a retrospective cohort study, including all STEMI patients who presented under code 247 to Tehran Heart Center between 2016 and 2020 and completed a 1-year follow-up. Patients were divided into two groups based on the development of AF during follow-up, and their baseline and clinical characteristics were compared. We used multivariable regression models to identify predictors of MACCE. Out of 3647 STEMI patients, 84 (2.3%) developed new-onset AF (NOAF). Patients with AF were significantly older and had lower levels of total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, and hemoglobin, but higher levels of fasting blood sugar and creatinine. AF patients were also more likely to have a history of hypertension, chronic kidney disease (CKD), congestive heart failure, and cerebrovascular accidents. The multivariable logistic regression model identified the CHA2DS2-VASc score and CKD as independent predictors of NOAF following primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Furthermore, the incidence of MACCE was higher in the AF group, and AF independently predicted MACCE with a hazard ratio of 2.766. The CHA2DS2-VASc score and the presence of CKD can serve as useful predictors of NOAF among patients with STEMI. Early detection and appropriate management are crucial to improve outcomes.
