Penguatan Perilaku Pasien Rehabilitasi Mental Melalui Group Therapy Tentang Bahaya dan Dampak Merokok

Background: The issue of mental health has become a global concern, including in Indonesia. In 2022, according to the World Health Organization, there were 24 million cases of schizophrenia globally, with a prevalence rate of 7% in Indonesia. The primary focus of schizophrenia treatment involves antipsychotic medication therapy and mental rehabilitation. Individuals with schizophrenia often undergo perceptual changes due to smoking behavior. Method: This community service activity took place on October 28, 2023, involving the formation of a group therapy as a mental health support group. Education was provided through a method involving lectures and simulations through demonstration. This activity was attended by 19 individuals, consisting of 12 patients, 1 speaker, 1 leader, 9 facilitators, 1 minute-taker, the head of the room, and 4 room nurses. The socialization activity took place for 55 minutes. Results: Findings from the identification indicate that 30% of active smokers among the patients prefer kretek cigarettes. Additionally, 85% of the patients experience lip irritation, and 80% exhibit yellowing of the skin and fingernails due to smoking. After conducting pre-test and post-test activities, there was an increase in participants' knowledge about the understanding of the dangers and impacts of smoking, rising from 33% to 92%. Additionally, the attitude towards quitting smoking increased from 17% to 83%. Conclusion: The increase in knowledge and attitude among participants was observed through the formation of group therapy focusing on the dangers and impacts of smoking during mental rehabilitation.

Rare Giant Upper Lip Epidermal Cyst in a Patient Wearing a Denture.

Epidermal cysts are intradermal or subcutaneous cystic tumors that frequently occur in the face, scalp, neck, and body trunk. Acquired cases of epidermal cyst commonly occur as a result of various surgical operations, chronic irritation, or trauma, all of which may trigger the occurrence of the invagination of squamous epithelium. A 57-year-old man presented with a palpable mass 7 cm×2 cm in size in the upper lip. The patient had a 3-year history of wearing a denture to restore missing bilateral maxillary central and lateral incisors, accompanied by inflammatory findings on the buccal mucosa due to chronic lip irritation. The resected oval-shaped cyst had a size of 5.5 cm×3.0 cm×2.5 cm, and it was an encapsulated mass with a well-defined margin. The histopathology was typical of epidermal cyst. This case of a rare giant upper lip epidermal cyst in a patient wearing a denture may be of interest to clinicians.

Treatment of Actinic Cheilitis Using a 1,927-nm Thulium Fractional Laser

Actinic cheilitis (AC) is a precancerous condition of the lip that primarily affects people with Fitzpatrick skin types I and II as a result of chronic exposure to solar irradiation. Additional factors include poor oral hygiene, chronic lip irritation, and excessive tobacco use. The clinical spectrum of AC is varied and may include erythema, leukoplakia, scaling, atrophy, dryness, fissures, ulcers, and loss of the vermilion border. As with actinic keratosis (AK), AC has the potential to undergo malignant transformation into invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Although the exact rate of malignant conversion is unknown, SCC of the lip is the most common malignancy of the oral cavity and is more aggressive than SCCs in other sites, so early diagnosis and effective treatment of AC is necessary to curtail its malignant transformation.

Patient responses to vacuum formed splints compared to heat cured acrylic splints: pilot study

Vacuum formed and heat cured acrylic splints have been used in the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate patient's preference to either the vacuum formed or the heat cured acrylic splint. Twenty patients planned to receive splints were chosen from the dental school. Both types of occlusal splints were fabricated for each of them. Each patient used the splints alternatively on a nightly basis for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks, each patient completed a questionnaire regarding the comfort, fit, retention, occlusal contact, taste, gingival and lip irritation, smoothness and smelling. Statistical analysis was conducted by the MacNemar's Chisquare test. There was no statistical difference in patient's responses to the different splint materials except for the comfort of wearing through the night. The vacuum formed and heat cured acrylic splint may be equally worn in patient preference for treatment of temporomandibular disorders.

Dust exposure, eye redness, eye cytology and mucous membrane irritation in a tobacco industry.

In a study of 75 workers employed in a tobacco factory producing cheroots we measured cellular contents of tear fluid, redness of eyes, discomfort, total (0-5.7 mg/m3) and respirable dust in the breathing zone and total ambient dust by stationary sampling (0.08-1.0 mg/m3). A matched group of 50 office workers in a telephone company (total ambient dust concentration between 0.08-0.13 mg/m3) was similarly examined as referents. We found a difference between the two companies with regard to cell counts, with tobacco workers having the largest numbers except for lymphocytes. Among tobacco workers we furthermore found that the number of cuboidal and columnar epithelial cells increased during the day. The increase of cuboidal cells, however, occurred mainly in a small group of tobacco workers exposed to the highest concentrations of tobacco dust (mean = 1.26 mg/m3). No difference in the sensation of eye irritation was found between companies, but increased irritation in the morning was associated with increased exposure to total dust during the workshift among tobacco workers. A dose-dependent difference in photographically measured eye redness was found among the tobacco workers. It could not be explained by differences in tobacco smoking, sex, age, sleeping habits or use of glasses. Irritation of lips and upper airways as reported by questionnaire were more common in tobacco workers than in referents. In conclusion the tobacco workers, more often than the referents, had complaints and objective changes in the mucous membranes of the eyes. These may be related to tobacco dust exposure.

Scirpene Toxin Analyses of Feed Associated with Animal Intoxication

Field cases in which animals exhibit symptoms of feed refusal, mouth and lip irritation, and internal hemorrhage are common. These cases have been associated with the presence of scirpene toxins in feeds. The Chemistry Laboratory at the Iowa State University, Diagnostic Laboratory, has used existing methodology, and thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography, and mass spectroscopy to attempt to determine if known scirpene toxins were involved in a diagnostic laboratory case. Chicken embryo toxicity of the extracts, field desorption and chemical ionization indicate the presence of some known scirpene toxins as well as unknown compounds.

An embouchure aid for clarinet and saxophone players

An embouchure aid was constructed as a means of bringing relief to the many clarinet and saxophone players who suffer chronic lip irritation as the result of playing their instruments. The device, a removable vinyl plastic matrix to be worn while playing, was designed to fit over the mandibular anterior teeth, thus relieving the pressure of the incisal edges of the teeth against the mucous membrane inside the lower lip. Tested in daily use by clarinet and saxophone players for a one-year period, the matrix proved immediately effective in eliminating lip irritation. Its unique design and construction gives it the additional advantages of being highly durable, as well as technically simple to fabricate and easy to fit.
