The way some linguistic varieties are analyzed – positive or negatively – denotes attitudes of stigma and social identity. This work, based on the methodology of Variational Sociolinguistics, aims at evaluating speakers’ beliefs and attitudes towards the use of rhotics. For that purpose, 10 informants (six from Maringa, two from Rio de Janeiro and two from Porto Alegre) were interviewed, and the register, the description and the analysis of the /r/ variants were carried out in each syllabic used. Also, the answers given by those informants to specific questions about linguistic beliefs were analyzed.
