Performance Analysis of a Linear Oscillatory Actuator for a Milking Unit

Milking with a conventional milking machine often involves teat trouble, because the pulsation rate of the milking is not variable. A new cylindrical linear oscillatory actuator (CLOA) developed by the authors has a freely variable pulsation rate. This paper analyzes the static and kinetic thrusts of the CLOA. The mover of the CLOA is capable of oscillation at a frequency of 1 Hz with a stroke of ±2 mm, and will be used in new milking machines.

Improvement on characteristics of linear oscillatory actuator for artificial hearts

The authors discuss improvements to develop a simple structured, permanent magnet single-winding linear oscillatory actuator (LOA) for total implantable artificial heart actuators. Two methods for improving the starting thrust of the LOA are considered: one is improvement by structural analysis; another is improvement by the exciting current control. In the first method, the starting thrust could be improved by the authors' investigations into the mover diameter, stator inductor shoe dimension and other factors. In the second, the current waveforms to obtain arbitrarily static thrust characteristics with respect to displacement were calculated. >

AbstractThis paper considers materials for the movers, the volume ratio of the stator and of the mover, and the structure of the mover in a cylindrical moving iron‐type linear oscillatory actuator (LOA) having a permanent magnet. As a result, we obtain the following: the static thrust characteristics are evaluated on two movers: movers P and S are made of a permendur and a stainless steel, respectively. It is clarified that the static thrust of the mover P is 30 percent larger than that of the mover S; it is suggested that the structure of the mover P should be improved to eliminate a “lump” in the static thrust‐displacement curve due to the step on the mover, and which disturbs the smooth motion of the LOA.

Development of a single-winding linear oscillatory actuator (artificial heart application)

The linear oscillatory actuator (LOA) has very few components and a highly simplified structure, and therefore promises to be simpler and more reliable than present actuators. The authors have developed a compact, high-output single-winding LOA with a design based on magnetic field analysis, for intended application in fully implanted artificial hearts. An LOA that provides high power output, includes a permanent magnet moving rod, and has a simple structure has been developed. After making and testing a prototype LOA, the authors found that the LOA's static thrust characteristics achieved the values intended in the design. They also determined, at the laboratory level, that the LOA's frequency characteristics show that the LOA can attain the required frequencies.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">&gt;</ETX>

Six-phase cylindrical linear pulse motor as linear oscillatory actuator

A trial construction is described of a six-phase cylindrical VR type linear pulse motor which has been developed as being applicable to the linear actuator for the assist artificial heart. The VR (variable reluctance) type motor has a smaller thrust/input ratio than the PM (permanent magnet) type motor, but is superior in low noise and high-speed operation. The trial construction has made use of this advantage. According to the static thrust characteristic of the linear pulse motor, increase in the number of exciting phases to six is effective to suppressing the thrust regulation, resulting in stable operation. As to the kinetic characteritics, the capability of the motor to be driven at low frequencies leads to such a great reduction in iron loss as to make possible the continuous operation with a kinetic thrust of 160 [N].
