Efficient Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin-Derived Phenolic Compounds Over Ru-Based Catalyst with Biochar and Al2O3 as Composite Support.

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a common strategy for upgrading lignin-derived phenolic compounds into high-quality liquid fuels, and the support rational design of HDO catalysts is critical to achieve a good reaction performance. This work proposed a novel Ru-based catalyst with biochar and Al2O3 as composite support. The addition of biochar can enlarge the porous structure, and the addition of Al2O3 can enhance the acid property of the support. By regulating the content of biochar and Al2O3 components, Ru/CA-2 catalyst achieved the best HDO performance of lignin-derived phenolic compounds, with the optimal component balance of 50 %C and 50 %Al2O3. This catalyst possesses the high Ru metal dispersion (1.38 nm particle size) to activate the hydrogen source, the moderate acid property to suppress carbon deposition and the abundant oxygen vacancy to promote substrate adsorption at the same time. 99.9 % conversion of guaiacol is obtained at 230 °C, with 99.9 % selectivity towards cyclohexane. Ru/CA-2 catalyst also has a good recyclability, with no obvious activity loss after five runs. Furthermore, in the application of catalytic lignin-oil HDO, the content of hydrocarbons increase from 10.7 % to 95.7 %, showing great potential on the industrial usage.

Distillery-Waste-Derived C-SiO2 Catalyst Support Reinforces Phenol Adsorption and Selective Hydrogenation.

Selective hydrogenation of lignin-derived phenolic compounds is an essential process for developing the sustainable chemical industry and reducing dependence on nonrenewable resources. Herein, a composite C-SiO2 material (DGC) was prepared via the stepwise pyrolysis and steam activation of the distiller's grains, a fermentation solid waste from the Baijiu industry. After Ru loading, Ru/DGC was used for the catalytic hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanol. Steam activation remarkably increased the hydrophilicity and specific surface area of DGC and introduced oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of DGC, promoting the adsorption of Ru3+. Furthermore, the steam activation of DGC promoted the graphitization of the carbon matrix and formed Si-H/Si-OH bonds on the SiO2 surface. The benzene ring of phenol interacted with the carbon matrix via π-π stacking, and the hydroxyl group of phenol interacted with SiO2 via hydrogen bonding. The synergistic interactions of phenol at the C-SiO2 interface enhanced phenol adsorption to promote the hydrogenation. Consequently, 100% of phenol was hydrogenated to cyclohexanol at 60 °C within 30 min. Furthermore, the optimized catalyst exhibited high activity for phenol hydrogenation even after four reuse cycles. The outstanding stability of the catalyst and its requirement for mild reaction conditions favor its large-scale industrial applications.

The influence of CeO2 different morphologies effects on hydrodeoxygenation for guaiacol on Ni/CeO2 catalysts

Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an effective way to produce high–value products from lignin-derived phenolic compounds. In this work, three different morphologies of Ni/CeO2 catalysts (amorphous, cubic, and rod-shaped) have been prepared through the conventional wet impregnation method. They can be used for the HDO of guaiacol to prepare cyclohexanol, an important chemical raw material. The influence of different morphologies of CeO2 on catalytic activity was explored. The research results indicate that Ni/CeO2–r catalysts with rod-shaped structures exhibit excellent catalytic properties. As a result, a 100 % conversion rate and 96.9 % cyclohexanol yield were achieved on the Ni/CeO2–r catalyst at 240 °C. The catalytic performance of the three catalysts follows this order: Ni/CeO2–r (rod-shaped) > Ni/CeO2–c (cubic) > Ni/CeO2–p (amorphous). The results of Raman and XPS indicate significant differences in the surface oxygen vacancy in catalysts with different morphologies. The Ni/CeO2–r catalyst has the highest oxygen vacancy concentration and defect. In addition, Ni/CeO2–r also has the largest specific surface area (SBET) and the highest nickel dispersion, and forms more Ni0 because of the strong interaction of Ni species and CeO2 support. Therefore, Ni/CeO2–r exhibits the most excellent catalytic performance for the hydrogenation of guaiacol than the other two catalysts. Moreover, the cycling activity test was also investigated over the Ni/CeO2–r catalyst. After five cycles, the conversion rate of guaiacol and the yield of cyclohexanol hardly decrease. This work provides vital ideas for the development of higher-activity, higher-stability, and low-cost catalysts for the conversion of lignin-derived phenolic compounds in the future.

Core-Shell catalyst-mediated hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol for the preparation of cyclohexanol

Abstract The conversion of lignin-derived phenolic compounds into high-value chemicals through value-added reactions holds significant importance. Cyclohexanol, an essential chemical raw material and organic intermediate, was synthesized in this study from guaiacol, a phenolic compound derived from lignin, through a hydrodeoxygenation reaction. When compared to mechanically mixed and supported catalysts, the use of the HZSM-5@Pd-SiO2 core-shell catalyst resulted in a cyclohexanol yield of 51.1% after a reaction conducted at 493K and 2 MPa H2 for 8h. The core-shell catalyst was characterized using TEM, N2 adsorption-desorption, and NH3-TPD, Py-FTIR revealing its rich acid sites, large specific surface area, and uniform mesopores.

Efficient Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin-Derived Phenolic Compounds over Bifunctional Catalyst Comprising H4PMo11VO40 Coupled with Ni/C.

In the catalytic transformation of bio-oil into liquid fuels having alkanes via hydrodeoxygenation (HDO), the acid and metal sites in the catalyst are pivotal for promoting the HDO of lignin-derived phenolic compounds. This study introduces a novel bifunctional catalyst comprising phosphomolybdenum-vanadium heteropolyacids (H4PMo11VO40) coupled with Ni/C. The HDO reaction of the model compound guaiacol was carried out under reaction conditions of 230 °C, revealing the superior performance of H4PMo11VO40 with Ni/C catalysts compared to the conventional acids, even at low dosage. The Keggin structure of H4PMo11VO40 provided a solid catalyst with strong acidic and redox properties, alongside advantages such as ease of synthesis, cost-effectiveness, and tunable acid and redox properties at the molecular level. Characterization of Ni/C and the prepared acid demonstrated favorable pore structure with a mesopore volume of 0.281 cm3/g and an average pore size of 3.404 nm, facilitating uniform distribution and catalytic activity of Ni-metal. Incorporating acid enhances the acidic sites, fostering synergistic interactions between metal and acidic sites within the catalyst, thereby significantly enhancing HDO performance. Guaiacol conversion at 230 °C reached 100 %, with a cyclohexane selectivity of 89.3 %. This study offers a promising avenue for the conversion and upgrading of lignin-derived phenolic compounds.

Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolic compounds with Ni-based aluminum phosphate catalyst

Lignin-derived products possess high carbon content and offer significant potential to be used as liquid fuels. However, they also contain high oxygen element and unstable functional groups. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an effective method for upgrading lignin-derived phenolic compounds to produce high-quality liquid biofuels. In this study, a series of Ni-based phosphate catalysts incorporating various metals (Al, Ce, La) were prepared and employed for the HDO of lignin-derived phenolic compounds. The results showed that Ni/AlPO4 had the most efficient HDO performance, with guaiacol conversion of 99.9 % and cyclohexane selectivity of 91.1 % at the reaction temperature of 250 °C. Various catalyst characterization measurements were conducted to assess the impact of metal phosphate species on the crystallography, morphology, physicochemical characteristics and surface properties. Results indicated that Ni/AlPO4 catalyst exhibited stronger acidity, smaller Ni particle sizes and larger specific surface area than other Ni-based phosphate catalysts. Based on the characterization results and experimental data, the corresponding HDO reaction pathways and mechanisms were also proposed. Ni/AlPO4 catalyst was also applied to the HDO of various lignin-derived phenol compounds and achieved a good HDO effect. Moreover, the catalytic upgrading of lignin-oil was also carried out, and a high proportion of hydrocarbon products that increased from 16.0 % to 88.6 % was obtained. This Ni/AlPO4 catalyst provides potential reference for the HDO application of lignin-derived phenolic compounds for the production of hydrocarbon liquid fuels.

Electro-depolymerization of Kraft lignin with deep eutectic solvents

The paper production industry annually produces approximately 50 million tons of lignin, an intermediate product. While lignin has the potential for producing valuable chemicals and energy materials, an effective method for its conversion is yet to be developed. This study aims to establish a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach for electrochemically synthesizing valuable compounds from lignin with using natural deep eutectic solvents as electrolytes. The study used cyclic voltammetry (CV) for the electrochemical depolymerization of Kraft lignin, examining the effects of different scan numbers on depolymerization and the resulting lignin derivatives. Observed changes in the depolymerization peak current of lignin were reported as the number of scans increased. Choline chloride: Lactic acid (CC:LA), Choline chloride: Ethylene glycol (CC:EG), and Lactic acid:1,2-propanediol (LA:PR) were used as green electrolytes. Syringaldehyde was found to be the major compound obtained by this method. As a result of statistical analysis performed using The Grey Relations Analysis method, it was determined that the conditions that utilized Kraft lignin with the highest added value involved performing five cycles of CV scans with the CC:LA electrolyte. CV scans in DES environments increased the yield of lignin-derived phenolic compounds.

Structure–function characterization of two enzymes from novel subfamilies of manganese peroxidases secreted by the lignocellulose-degrading Agaricales fungi Agrocybe pediades and Cyathus striatus

BackgroundManganese peroxidases (MnPs) are, together with lignin peroxidases and versatile peroxidases, key elements of the enzymatic machineries secreted by white-rot fungi to degrade lignin, thus providing access to cellulose and hemicellulose in plant cell walls. A recent genomic analysis of 52 Agaricomycetes species revealed the existence of novel MnP subfamilies differing in the amino-acid residues that constitute the manganese oxidation site. Following this in silico analysis, a comprehensive structure–function study is needed to understand how these enzymes work and contribute to transform the lignin macromolecule.ResultsTwo MnPs belonging to the subfamilies recently classified as MnP-DGD and MnP-ESD—referred to as Ape-MnP1 and Cst-MnP1, respectively—were identified as the primary peroxidases secreted by the Agaricales species Agrocybe pediades and Cyathus striatus when growing on lignocellulosic substrates. Following heterologous expression and in vitro activation, their biochemical characterization confirmed that these enzymes are active MnPs. However, crystal structure and mutagenesis studies revealed manganese coordination spheres different from those expected after their initial classification. Specifically, a glutamine residue (Gln333) in the C-terminal tail of Ape-MnP1 was found to be involved in manganese binding, along with Asp35 and Asp177, while Cst-MnP1 counts only two amino acids (Glu36 and Asp176), instead of three, to function as a MnP. These findings led to the renaming of these subfamilies as MnP-DDQ and MnP-ED and to re-evaluate their evolutionary origin. Both enzymes were also able to directly oxidize lignin-derived phenolic compounds, as seen for other short MnPs. Importantly, size-exclusion chromatography analyses showed that both enzymes cause changes in polymeric lignin in the presence of manganese, suggesting their relevance in lignocellulose transformation.ConclusionsUnderstanding the mechanisms used by basidiomycetes to degrade lignin is of particular relevance to comprehend carbon cycle in nature and to design biotechnological tools for the industrial use of plant biomass. Here, we provide the first structure–function characterization of two novel MnP subfamilies present in Agaricales mushrooms, elucidating the main residues involved in catalysis and demonstrating their ability to modify the lignin macromolecule.

Sustainable Adipic Acid Production via Paired Electrolysis of Lignin-Derived Phenolic Compounds with Water as Hydrogen and Oxygen Sources.

Adipic acid (AA) is an important feedstock for nylon polymers and is industrially produced from fossil-derived aromatics via thermocatalysis. However, this process consumes explosive H2 and corrosive HNO3 as reductants and oxidants, respectively. Here, we report the direct synthesis of AA from lignin-derived phenolic compounds via paired electrolysis using bimetallic cooperative catalysts. At the cathode, phenol is hydrogenated on PtAu catalysts to form ketone-alcohol (KA) oil with 92% yield and 43% Faradaic efficiency (FE). At the anode, KA is electrooxidized into AA on CuCo2O4 catalysts, achieving a maximum of 85% yield and 84% FE. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the excellent catalytic activity can be ascribed to the enhanced absorption and activation capability of reactants on the bimetallic cooperative catalysts. A two-electrode flow electrolyzer for AA synthesis realizes a stable electrolysis at 2.5 A for over 200 h as well as 38.5% yield and 70.2% selectivity. This study offers a green and sustainable route for AA synthesis from lignin via paired electrolysis.

A first-principles study on the hydrodeoxygenation mechanism of the lignin-derived phenolic compounds over MoS2 catalysts

Understanding the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) mechanism of phenolic compounds is crucial for advancing catalytic upgrading techniques of bio-oil. Herein, a comprehensive theoretical study of the HDO of lignin-derived phenolic compounds (phenol, cresols, and guaiacol) on the MoS2 surface was carried out using periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Adsorption of phenolic compounds on different crystal faces was first compared. The MoS2 (100) crystal face is more favorable for the adsorption of phenolic compounds which show the horizontal adsorption configurations. Three kinds of HDO patterns were explored for the phenolic compounds. Phenol tends to transform into benzene via stepwise deoxygenation and hydrogenation under the induction of active hydrogen. For cresol isomers, their HDO mechanisms differ from each other due to the influence of the methyl group on the dehydroxylation process. Specifically, o-cresol follows a synergistic process of deoxidation and hydrogenation, m-cresol undergoes a two-step reaction involving direct dehydroxylation and hydrogenation, and p-cresol involves the identical HDO pathway as phenol. With regard to guaiacol, the preferred HDO route involves successive dehydroxylation and demethoxylation to benzene with the anisole intermediate. In addition, the adsorption of phenolics over transition metal-doped MoS2 catalysts was further explored to examine the potential of metal doping for the HDO of phenolics. The doping of Ta and W increases the adsorption capacity, which shows the potential to enhance the HDO activity of the catalyst theoretically.

High stable NiCoAl catalyst prepared by combustion method for the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolic compounds: Effect of calcination temperature

The hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolic compounds holds great promise for biomass-derived liquid fuel production. However, achieving a consistently high cyclohexane yield poses a formidable challenge. In this study, NiCoAl catalysts were successfully synthesized using the solution combustion method for the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-oil. The impact of calcination temperature on the preparation of NiCoAl catalysts was investigated. The results indicate that the selectivity of cyclohexane exhibits an initial increase followed by a decrease as the calcination temperature rises. Notably, the NiCoAl-600 catalyst reached 99.99% guaiacol conversion, with the highest selectivity of cyclohexane (97.96%) achieved. Characterization results demonstrate that the transition of the spinel structure from normal to inverse with rising calcination temperature. Moreover, the catalyst particle size initially decreases and then increases, while the oxygen vacancy concentration in the catalyst increases. It was found that these properties contribute to a better hydrodeoxygenation performances of guaiacol and other phenolic compounds over non-noble NiCoAl catalyst. Possible reaction pathway and mechanism are proposed and discussed. Additionally, the spinel-structured NiCoAl-600 catalyst has good thermal stability, ensuring potential application in the upgrading of lignin-oil.

Light-Triggered, Ni-Catalyzed Cyanation of Aryl Triflates with 1,4-Dicyanobenzene as the CN Source.

A light-triggered, Ni-catalyzed cyanation of aryl triflates was herein reported, which provides a benign photochemical synthesis of aryl nitriles using 1,4-dicyanobenzene as the CN source instead of HCN or a metallic CN source. This mild method uses a readily available bisphosphine ligand and a soluble organosilicon reagent as the reductant and is carried out under purple light without an external photocatalyst. This cyanation was effective for aryl triflates derived from phenols and bisphenols as well as lignin-derived phenolic compounds, demonstrating its potential utility for the synthesis of aryl nitriles from biomass.

Alkaline wet oxidative pretreatment and acid hydrolysis of wheat straw for squalene and monomethyl branched chain fatty acids rich lipid production in Lentibacillus salarius BPIITR

Lignocellulosic biomass has high potential for use as a carbon substrate in microbial fermentation. However, the generation of various lignin-derived phenolic compounds, benzoic acids, and carbohydrate-derived furan aldehydes poses a major bottleneck. In this study, wheat straw was subjected to sequential alkaline wet oxidative pretreatment (AWOP) and acid hydrolysis to extract hemicellulose sugars. After statistical optimization, 251.50 mg/g total sugar (228.57 mg/g pentose, 22.93 mg/g hexose) and 19.64 mg/g hydrolysis by-products were achieved, with a theoretical pentose recovery of 89.57% and residual cellulose of 72.1%. The lignin-rich and carbohydrate-rich liquids from the AWOP treatment and acid hydrolysis, respectively, were valorised to produce squalene and branched chain fatty acid rich lipid using Lentibacillus salarius BPIITR. The lipid of 100.9 ± 3.53 and 235.75 ± 10.39 mg/g of dcw rich in squalene up to 3121.17 ± 25.49 and 676.41 ± 134.27 μg/g of lipid was produced in AWOP and acid hydrolysate, respectively. In the AWOP hydrolysate, lignin content was reduced by 63.78%, compared to a 40.18% reduction in the acid hydrolysate. GC-MS analysis of the lignin monomer and metabolites suggests the potential influence of lignin monomers on the biosynthetic pathway of squalene and carbohydrate content on the branched chain fatty acids accumulation in the halophilic bacterial lipid of L. salarius BPIITR.

Fine-Tuning of Ni/NiO over H-NbOx for Enhanced Eugenol Hydrogenation through Enhanced Oxygen Vacancies and Synergistic Participation of Active Sites.

The hydrogenation of lignin-derived phenolics to produce valuable chemicals is a promising but challenging task. This study successfully demonstrates the use of sustainable transition metal-based catalysts to hydrogenate lignin-derived phenolics. A defect-induced oxygen vacancy containing H-NbOx prepared from commercial Nb2O5 was employed as a catalyst. H-NbOx exhibited higher oxygen vacancies (158.21 μmol/g) than commercial Nb2O5 (39.01 μmol/g), evaluated from O2-TPD. Upon supporting 10 wt % Ni, a Ni/NiO interface was formed over H-NbOx, which was intrinsically active for the hydrogenation of phenolics. 10Ni/H-NbOx exhibited a two-fold increase in activity than 10Ni/Nb2O5, achieving >99% eugenol conversion and affording ∼94% 4-propyl cyclohexanol selectivity, wherein ∼63% eugenol conversion and ∼73% 4-propyl cyclohexanol selectivity were obtained over 10Ni/Nb2O5. The Ni/NiO formation was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, HR-TEM, and H2-TPR analysis, while the oxygen vacancies were verified by Raman spectroscopy and O2-TPD analysis. The resulting interface enhanced the synergy between Ni and H-NbOx and facilitated hydrogen dissociation, confirmed by H2-TPD. Remarkably, 10Ni/H-NbOx maintained its catalytic activity for five tested cycles and demonstrated exceptional activity with various phenolics. Our findings highlight the potential of a sustainable transition metal catalyst for the hydrogenation of lignin-derived phenolic compounds, which could pave the path to producing valuable chemicals in an environmentally friendly manner.

Bio-Based Valorization of Lignin-Derived Phenolic Compounds: A Review.

Lignins are the most abundant biopolymers that consist of aromatic units. Lignins are obtained by fractionation of lignocellulose in the form of "technical lignins". The depolymerization (conversion) of lignin and the treatment of depolymerized lignin are challenging processes due to the complexity and resistance of lignins. Progress toward mild work-up of lignins has been discussed in numerous reviews. The next step in the valorization of lignin is the conversion of lignin-based monomers, which are limited in number, into a wider range of bulk and fine chemicals. These reactions may need chemicals, catalysts, solvents, or energy from fossil resources. This is counterintuitive to green, sustainable chemistry. Therefore, in this review, we focus on biocatalyzed reactions of lignin monomers, e.g., vanillin, vanillic acid, syringaldehyde, guaiacols, (iso)eugenol, ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, and alkylphenols. For each monomer, its production from lignin or lignocellulose is summarized, and, mainly, its biotransformations that provide useful chemicals are discussed. The technological maturity of these processes is characterized based on, e.g., scale, volumetric productivities, or isolated yields. The biocatalyzed reactions are compared with their chemically catalyzed counterparts if the latter are available.

Selective hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol to cyclohexanol over core-shell Cox@C@Ni catalysts under mild condition

Guaiacol, a typical lignin-derived phenolic compound, can be converted to high value-added cyclohexanol through hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). In this work, a series of core-shell Cox@C@Ni catalysts were prepared via two-step hydrothermal and calcination treatments, and applied to catalyze guaiacol to cyclohexanol. Compared with Co@C catalyst, core-shell Cox@C@Ni catalysts exhibited much better catalytic performance. Almost 100% guaiacol conversion and 90% cyclohexanol selectivity were achieved over Co1.2@C@Ni catalyst at 220 °C, 0 MPa N2 for 2 h using isopropanol as H-donor solvent, which was carried out under much milder conditions compared with previous research. The structure feature of core-shell Cox@C@Ni catalysts were analyzed by BET, XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, etc. The catalyst compositions and acidities played a significant role on hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol via ICP and NH3-TPD analysis. The influences of reaction temperature, reaction time and initial nitrogen pressure were also investigated to explore the optimal reaction condition. Moreover, the possible reaction pathways and reaction mechanism was deduced based on the product distributions and physicochemical properties.

Ultrafast microfluidic preparation of highly dispersed Ru/TiO2 catalyst for the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolic compounds

An ultrafast preparation method that coupled the photochemical method with the microfluidic technology to synthesize the highly dispersed Ru/TiO2 catalyst within only 1 min was proposed. This method had an enhanced electron excitation and a high electron transfer efficiency during the preparation process due to the small dimension of the microchannel, which enabled to shorten the preparation time greatly. Much higher metal reduction efficiency was obtained than that of the single photochemical method, and a high Ru metal dispersion on the TiO2 surface can be achieved. Moreover, a strong interaction between the metal site and the support was formed, resulting in more spillover hydrogen. This Ru/TiO2 catalyst presented a high activity on the HDO of phenolic compounds. Guaiacol was converted into cyclohexane with 97.6 % selectivity at 260 °C. The raw lignin-oil also can be upgraded efficiently, with the hydrocarbon content increased from 6.7 % to 69.4 %.

Upgradation of Eugenol to ASTM D 1655 standard Bio-Jet(A) fuel range hydrocarbons via hydrodeoxygenation process over Ru-Ni supported KIT-6/HZSM-5

A novel hierarchical Zeolite composite was successfully synthesized for bio-fuel application via catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin-Derived Phenolic Model Compound (LDPMC) in a downflow fixed bed reactor. The utilization of massive noble metals in the hydrodeoxygenation process in factories leads to an increase in the total cost of LDPMC technology. A fractional replacement of Ruthenium (Ru) by another transition metal Nickel (Ni), is a potentially effective method. The core asset of the novel synthesized catalyst displayed the advantageous properties of both micro- and mesoporous. This could be confirmed by the results of XRD, BET, and surface analyzing microscopes. The synthesis of Rux-Ni10-x/KIT-6-HZSM-5 (x = 2, 4 & 6) bimetallic-monometallic catalysts and their catalytic performance for hydrodeoxygenation of Eugenol are reported in the present study. The hierarchical Zeolite composite catalysts were synthesized by a wet-chemistry method. The active catalysts were characterized by ATR-IR, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, HR-SEM, HR-TEM, XPS, and TGA techniques. The synthesized 2 %Ru-8 %Ni/KIT-6-HZSM-5 exhibited 100 % conversion with a maximum yield of 48.70 % of the complete deoxygenated product (Jet A range fuel) due to the synergistic effect between Ru and Ni on hierarchical Zeolite composite support and superior catalytic activity compared to the other synthesized catalysts with the highest metal dispersion. The stability and reproducibility of catalysts were steady even after 4 cycles. The Ruthenium and Nickel loaded hierarchical Zeolite composite support showed superior activity related to other reported catalysts even at atmospheric pressure under variable experimental conditions.
