Dynamics Characteristics of a Light Weight Backfill Material

A granular air-mortar is a light weight backfill material and it's unit weight and strength can be control. Therefor it is estimated to reduce earth pressure acting on the revetment and the retaining wall. In the case of using this light weight material at a revetment, liquefaction and seismic earth pressure of backfill are difficult planning problems. And so static and cyclic triaxial tests and shaking table tests were performed on a granular air-mortal. This report deals with the shear characteristics and the seismic earth pressure acting on the retaining wall.

Lightweight aggregate was used as a soil fill in the reclamation of a marine terminal at the Port of Albany, New York in order to stabilize the dockside area. Gravel-filled steel sheet pile walls and a tiedback sheet pile wall system with a lightweight backfill were used in reclaiming a formerly unusable slope into the Hudson River. A specially designed apparatus was developed to determine the angle of internal friction and triaxial compression tests conducted on large-scale specimens of coarse lightweight aggregate. Specifications called for maximum compacted density of 70 lb/ft³ with an angle of internal friction of not less than 40 degrees. A total of 27,000 cubic yards of coarse lightweight aggregate was placed and compacted.
