The light‐induced structural state changes of chloroplast (swelling and shrinkage) are compared with the change of activity (ferrcyanide reduction and photophosphorylation) and the state of hydrophobic membrane parts, characterised by the electron spin resonance spectra of iminoxyl radical‐probe, introduced in the membrane.Shrinkage of chloroplasts in sodium acetate medium is accompanied by non‐essential changes of activity and conformational state. Moreover light‐induced swelling in sodium chloride medium is accompanied by transition of chloroplasts to the uncoupled state and by change of conformational state.The regulatory function of conformational transitions in the chloroplasts is discussed and the corresponding scheme of regulation of photophosphorylation is suggested.
