Examination of cybersecurity in open and distance learning within the scope of technical support services

Open and distance learning (ODL) activities aim to meet the expectations and needs of different individuals, societies, and systems by ensuring the continuation of learning with a lifelong learning philosophy and an egalitarian policy for everyone, regardless of time and place. Support services, which address the differentiated expectations and needs in all learning-related activities, serve the learning processes and the various stakeholders involved. Therefore, technical support services are included in support activities that require the use of technology as a tool, mediator, or technique in learning processes. In this study, ODL systems that are situated in digital space are examined within the scope of technical support services in line with the threats and dangers of the developing and expanding digital space. The aim is to create a technical support service model based on Herbert Simon's Bounded Rationality Theory and Otto Peters' Industrialization Theory, to ensure cybersecurity in ODL systems. In this study, which adopted a case study as one of the qualitative research methods, documents in the literature were examined first. Considering the literature, the opinions of eight field experts were gathered by ten interview questions. After the semi-structured interviews were transcribed, the data obtained were divided into codes and themes through thematic analysis. The findings stressed the importance of institutional culture, distribution of tasks and responsibilities, administrative support, institutional awareness, cybersecurity training, and the use of different technologies to ensure cybersecurity in ODL systems. Additionally, the experts emphasized a common view that smart systems should be used in the provision and maintenance of cybersecurity.

Undergraduate education should accomplish graduates who are skilled to provide quality care for patients, who are aware of their scope of practice, competency level and limits and who are open to referring patients whose needs are beyond their own skills and experience. They should also become self-efficacious. Quality performance begins with good diagnosis and decision-making. Graduates should understand when to treat, why to treat, what to treat and how to treat. These guidelines include a list of capabilities that the graduating student will be expected to have achieved to provide a minimum level of competency in endodontics. Theoretical knowledge, practical skills, understanding and insight should be assessed, with both formative and summative assessment procedures, making use of reflection and feedback. Endodontic procedures should be undertaken within the context of comprehensive patient care and should be evidence based. Students should not perform treatments on patients until they have demonstrated in a pre-clinical setting that they possess the required skills. Only if it is not possible to simulate a specific procedure sufficiently in a pre-clinical setting should students learn this procedure by performing it clinically under close supervision. Clinical endodontics should ideally be supervised by endodontists or by staff with special knowledge, interest and self-efficacy in endodontics. It is advised to ensure that students apply their knowledge and practice their skills periodically throughout the continuum of endodontic education until graduation. A philosophy of lifelong learning and evidence-based practice should be instilled in all dental undergraduates.

Bibliometric analysis of research on digital transformation and education

Recent technological developments have brought about innovations in many fields, such as education, health, economy, and finance. One of these innovations is the concept of digital transformation, which changes the way businesses, institutions, and organizations do business. The concept of digital transformation began with the Fourth Industrial Revolution and brought new technologies to it. The emergence of digital technologies has revolutionized various aspects of society, including education. Digital transformation has emerged as a powerful catalyst that reshapes traditional educational practices and offers new opportunities for teaching and learning. In particular, with the Covid-19 pandemic affecting the whole world, online education has become very important, and all educational institutions have started to integrate their systems into this change. In addition, with the philosophy of lifelong learning, it has become very easy to access training on digital platforms. In line with this information, this study aims to reveal the developments in the historical process of digital transformation and education between 2000 and 2023 in the Web of Science database and to carry out bibliometric analysis by scanning the articles and books published to determine the most studied topics in the field. To achieve the aim of the study, the keywords “digital transformation and education” were scanned. As a result of this search, 2,739 publications were published. These publications were analyzed according to year, research area, country-based distribution, subject distribution, and the most used keywords. As a result of the research, when the research areas of the articles are examined, it is seen that the most studied area is "Education and educational research" and "business". This situation can be said that digital transformation is a very remarkable subject in the field of education and business. When we look at the distribution according to years, it is clear that the greatest acceleration occurred in the last five years. This shows that digital transformation has been increasingly emphasized in recent years. In terms of countries, the subject is studied more in countries such as Germany, Spain, the United States, and Russia.

Towards an Age-friendly University: An Intergenerational Study among FICS-UPOU Graduates

In this study, the educational experience of graduates under the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS) for A.Y. 2017-2018 was assessed through an intergenerational lens. Respondents’ age range was categorized into three generations: Baby Boomers (1945-1965), Generation X (1966-1985), and the Millennials (1986-2005). A survey questionnaire was used to gather data on the respondents’ socio-demographic profile (age, gender, and employment status) and educational experience. Educational experience was assessed through five variables: relevance of curriculum, usefulness of the program, quality of instruction, effectiveness of online delivery, and current employability. Generational disaggregation of data was done before data analysis. Afterward, the collected data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Aside from measures of central tendency, the means test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Spearman correlation were also used to determine the relationship between the respondents’ socio-demographic characteristics and educational experience. On average, the respondents found their UPOU learning experience to be quite positive – indicating an age-friendly curriculum flexible to the needs of different generation cohorts. Results showed that there was no association between gender and learning experience; and age group and learning experience. On the other hand, employment status was found to have a weak inverse correlation with two indicators: effectiveness of online delivery; and current employability. The results of the study presented implications for instructional design and improvement of online delivery to achieve an age-friendly university consistent with its lifelong learning philosophy.

Automation, artificial intelligence and future skills needs: an Irish perspective

PurposeThis study explores insights from key stakeholders into the skills they believe will be necessary for the future of work as we become more reliant on artificial intelligence (AI) and technology. The study also seeks to understand what human resource policies and educational interventions are needed to support and take advantage of these changes.Design/methodology/approachThis is a qualitative study where a sample of highly experienced representatives from a range of small to large Irish organisations, both public and private, provide insights into this important topic.FindingsFindings indicate participants see a continued need for soft and hard skills as we evolve towards a more technologised workplace, with a need for employees to adopt a lifelong learning philosophy. As the knowledge economy in Ireland is well established, experts do not expect mass displacement to occur but differ with respect to the predicted rate of change. Novel HR interventions such as hiring for potential, pooling talent and establishing postgraduate supply contracts are seen as key. Current state interventions were mostly viewed positively but revamping of curricula is needed as well as stronger partnerships with tertiary institutions.Research limitations/implicationsThe interpretivist nature of the study limits the generalisability of the findings as they are based on a relatively small sample from one country. Also despite the significant expertise of the sample, it is not possible to predict whether their forecasts will manifest.Practical implicationsThis research highlights the need for Irish SMEs to embrace the impacts of automation and AI as many are seen to be slow in reacting to changes in technology. The study also reveals cutting edge talent management interventions for employers to adopt that will insulate them from the challenges technological change presents to recruitment and employee development.Originality/valueThe findings from this paper culminate in the development of a conceptual framework, which encapsulates the responsibilities of all parties so that future skills needs will be met. This highlights the interplay between employers, individuals/employees, the Irish Government and educational institutions, demonstrating how they are interdependent on one another as we move towards a more technologised future.

Lifelong learning opportunities for professional women in Bangladesh: to what extent does patriarchy act as a barrier?

ABSTRACT In the novel ‘Pride and Prejudice’, Austen (1813) wanted to show the marginal or subaltern standing of a woman in the 18th century England by saying that a woman was always subservient to a man, and the sole identity of a woman was being a wife to a male at that time. In present-day Bangladesh, a similar view is evident, where women are raised with the notion that their raison d’etre is to have and maintain stable relationships with men for a lifetime, despite the changing workplace dynamics that offer opportunities for progress. Bangladeshi women quietly embrace the philosophy of lifelong learning, yet their dedication to this pursuit remains largely unexplored and unrecorded, with only occasional publications touching upon the subject in an organized manner. The study examines how patriarchy restricts women's access to lifelong learning in Bangladesh, presenting a scoping review of literature to identify gaps and potential solutions. By advocating a radical approach, the paper aims to empower Bangladeshi professional women to overcome barriers and challenge patriarchal norms for their educational and career advancement.

INVESTIGATION OF DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP INDICATORS OF PUBLIC EDUCATION CENTER MASTER TRAINERS ACCORDING TO VARIOUS VARIABLES

The rapid development in the field of information and technology has transformed today's information age into a digital process. This process has deeply affected all social systems, from education to health, from communication to entertainment. Learning and renewal skills, life and professional skills, information media and technology skills, learning environment and methods have changed. While the philosophy of lifelong learning gained importance, non-formal education institutions played an important role in adapting people to this changing process. The most important share in this role falls to the teachers working in institutions. In this research, it is aimed to reveal the digital citizenship indicators of master trainers working in Public Education Centers, which is one of the non-formal education institutions. The sample, which was designed with the descriptive scanning method, consisted of 530 masters working in Samsun Public Education Centers. The data in the research were obtained with the form and the "Digital Citizenship Scale", in which personal information about the digital tool usage preferences of the master trainers is included. In the analysis of the normally distributed data, it was seen that the perspectives of the master trainers on digital citizenship were only in the "correct use" sub-dimension, with an average of 4.47, in the other dimensions, and in the general average, "agree". It was determined that there were significant differences in favor of young master trainers in terms of gender and age variable. In addition, all of the participants in the study used smartphones; while all of them use WhatsApp, followed by social networks such as Youtube, Instagram and Facebook, respectively; While almost all of the participants use e-government applications, applications such as health, education, social security issues and obtaining information come respectively according to the purpose of use; It was determined that %80 of the participants shopped online.

THE JAPANESE ARTS AND MEDITATION‐IN‐ACTION

AbstractThe Japanese arts (dō) provide a rigorous, ritual‐like set of structures which involve moral and aesthetic training, as well as providing techniques for body‐mind synchronization (constituting as such: meditation‐in‐action). The article explores the links between the Japanese arts and Zen Buddhist ideals (particularly Sōtō Zen) of enlightenment being nothing other than the consistent practice of one's art. Japanese archery (kyudō) will be highlighted to illustrate this, as will the Japanese lifelong learning philosophy (shugyō). The article concludes by bringing into contrast two very different notions of what spiritual development consists in, one of which is highly conservative with respect to its traditions (per the Japanese arts), and the other which explicitly characterizes spiritual development as a process of renewing one's tradition as one practices it (per Margaret Masterman and Richard Sennett). It is suggested that, for better or worse, maintaining the extreme purity of one's practices is unrealistic in today's profoundly interconnected world.

Linguistic Consciousness and Foreign Language Learning in Multilingual Education

The article deals with the issues where linguistic consciousness as a sociolinguistic phenomenon is successfully revealed in FLT, namely, in problematic questions of language learning. It covers the description of linguistic consciousness and some aspects of its influence on the process of development of students’ communicative competence. It is emphasized that the philosophy of lifelong learning has become a widespread phenomenon in modern society. Learning a foreign language can be considered an important means of forming linguistic consciousness and the ability to conduct intercultural dialogues. The correlation of two languages and cultures (Ukrainian and foreign ones) helps to outline their national specific features, which contribute to a deeper understanding of both the foreign and the native language and culture. Any education system is open and fairly stable. As for the methods and learning tools, they can vary depending on the applicable learning concept. The article gives a detailed description of the development of linguistic consciousness of Ukrainian students from different social groups while learning English. So linguistic consciousness is a reflection of the actual language sphere contributes to the development of both communicative and multilingual competences. The main aim of the use of modern educational technologies is to increase the level of the communicative competence and linguistic consciousness in students, their educational achievements, and to improve the quality of language education.

Purpose: This research aims to determine the place of the "Refreshment University" in the systems of older age education in the world by examining the purposes, basic features, admission conditions, activities, and ways of providing funding for the systems for older age education in the world.Design/Methodology/Approach: Since the researcher will develop an objective attitude by looking at the facts from the outside with a deductive approach, the research has been designed with a cross-sectional descriptive design, one of the survey models, with a quantitative research approach. The study population was determined by grouping them as French model, English model, and hybrid models, and ten universities were determined to be examined through purposive sampling. One of these universities represents the French model, one represents the English model, and the other eight universities represent the Hybrid models. The investigated features of these ten older adult education systems were also carried out for Refreshment University. In collecting data, the websites of the older adult universities in the sample were examined and the catalogs, reports, plans, periodic written sources, magazines, books, films, photographs, and videos (documents) accessed from the websites were used. The data analysis was carried out by presenting the tables created in line with the questions determined to achieve the purpose.Findings: Old age adult university systems in the research sample were analyzed in terms of their objectives, main characteristics, student admission conditions, educational areas and activities, and sources of funding. The research has concluded that although the "Refreshment University" is similar to the French model, it is a proper candidate to create a hybrid model. It should be noted that this could change, given that “Refreshment University” is more recent and developing.Highlights: The primary purpose of the systems for older age adult education is to ensure healthy and quality aging as well as active aging in line with the philosophy of lifelong learning.

EDUCATIONAL CONDITIONS FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF ADULTS’ DISTANCE LEARNING OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES

In the paper the results of the experimental study of the adult distance learning management are suggested. The urgency of the research is based on the tendency towards the aging of population, development of the third age universities network, active implementation of the lifelong learning philosophy, the analysis of recent publications and studies. It is determined that despite the growing popularity of the lifelong learning philosophy, there is a lack of systematic research on the use of ICT for the elderly. In the paper the historical essay on the problems of distance learning for the elderly is offered. The conceptual framework is analyzed. The methodology of the research and features of the target audience selection are described; the specifics of data collection and analysis at different stages of the research are defined. The purpose of the research is determined – to distinguish pedagogical conditions for an effective distance learning introduction into foreign language education of the elderly. The research has been conducted on the basis of the Center for Innovative Education. The emphasis is made on the formation of the target group of participants in the study and their foreign language learning motivation. The stages of data collection and analysis are specified, namely: before the beginning of training, at the stage of the curriculum development, after the start of the first module of the distance learning course, after the completion of the first module of the course, at the end of the course and two months after the course is completed. Detailed results of data analysis for each stage of the research are delivered. The analysis of these data is carried out. The features of the distance course for the elderly and the methodological recommendations on its development are defined. The study has also allowed to confirm the results of the personal and cognitive potential of the elderly and revealed that the ability to learn under certain conditions even increases instead of decreasing. The prospects for further research, adjacent to neurophysiologists’ and neurobiologists’ studies, are suggested. The aforementioned prospects raise the issue of the further scenarios for the use of distance learning platforms for the elderly.

Relationships between Student Personality Traits, Mobbing, and Depression within the Context of Sustainable Tourism Education: The Case of a Faculty of Tourism

Sustainable education has the target of improving skills that encourage students or life-long learners to reflect on actions realized by themselves. Its main concern is considering their actual and future cultural, socio-economic, and environmental impacts. Such a paradigm to evaluate these impacts is to bring about a local and a global perspective. Sustainability, as a means of qualified education, is a consequence of lifelong learning philosophy. All levels and all kinds of education should deal with the issues of sustainability and create holistic and transformational skills in this topic. In this context, pedagogy and learning environment is of great importance. Concerning learning environment, mobbing cases have frequently coincided in educational organizations. Mobbing has been regarded as an important business disease of contemporary work-life. Besides, mobbing might be coincided not only in the businesses but also in the organizations providing educational services. In schools and universities, mobbing leads to physiological, sociological, and psychological harms for the students. Recent studies have shown that in the school environment, students are exposed to a possible mobbing behavior and that their academic performance and achievement, as well as their mental and physical health, are negatively influenced. In addition, many academic studies indicate that the personality traits students have are an important predictor of exposure to mobbing and depression. This study aimed to determine the levels of mobbing and depression perceptions of students (type A, type B) who are studying tourism education at undergraduate level. In this context, within the groups of personality traits, the levels of depression in the process of mobbing were examined. Research data were collected from 524 students surveyed in a tourism faculty of a state university. In order to realize the data collection, Personality Traits, Mobbing, and Depression scales were used. Correlation, t-test, and regression analysis were performed as well as descriptive statistics (frequencies, mean, and standard deviation) in the process of data analysis. As a consequence of the research, it was determined that mobbing influenced psychological conditions of all students showing the features of A and B type as personality traits. Nevertheless, mobbing and depression perceptions differ upon their personality groups. It was found that the mean scores of mobbing and depression perceptions of students’ having A type personality traits were comparatively higher than the ones having B type personality traits. In addition, it has been revealed that there is a positive relationship between mobbing and depression perceptions of students. Mobbing explained 14% of the change in the depression levels of the students. As a result of the findings, it was determined that personality trait is an important and significant factor in the impact levels of students from mobbing and depression. Incorporation of personality traits into the transformational learning process in the education system as well as teaching and supporting of students with applied social education can be an effective element of sustainable education.

Building A High Quality Oncology Nursing Workforce Through Lifelong Learning: The De Souza Model.

AbstractCancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Along with increased new cases, cancer care has become increasingly complex due to advances in diagnostics and treatments, greater survival, and new models of palliative care. Nurses are a critical resource for cancer patients and their families. Their roles and responsibilities are expanding across the cancer care continuum, calling for specialized training and support. Formal education prepares nurses for entry level of practice, however, it does not provide the specialized competencies required for quality care of cancer patients. There is urgent need to align the educational system to the demands of the health care system, ease transition from formal academic systems to care settings, and to instill a philosophy of lifelong learning. We describe a model of education developed by de Souza Institute in Canada, based on the Novice to Expert specialty training framework, and its success in offering structured oncology continuing education training to nurses, from undergraduate levels to continued career development in the clinical setting. This model may have global relevance, given the challenge in managing the demand for high quality care in all disease areas and in keeping pace with the emerging advances in technologies.

Study on Humanistic Accomplishment in Elementary & Secondary English Schooling

Under the background of the new curriculum reform, one of the important issues faced with English teachers in elementary and secondary schools is how to improve students’ humanistic accomplishment while cultivating their English language ability. In English teaching, teachers’ integration of humanistic educational ideology can help students not only improve the actual use of language ability through learning and practice, but also develop thinking ability and improve humanistic accomplishment.[1] In addition, English teachers should establish a lifelong learning philosophy in improving their own humanistic accomplishment. At the same time, for the purpose of the overall development of students, teachers should pay attention to students’ emotions and teaching strategies, thus to improve the quality of teaching, and ultimately achieve the purpose of improving students’ humanistic accomplishment.

Navigating the National Qualifications Framework (NQF): The role of career guidance

The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) recently commissioned a review of the career development field in South Africa. The review was designed to clarify what SAQA’s role might be in assisting learners throughout life to navigate their ways through the complex array of education, training and work opportunities (including, but not confined to, those within higher education). This article situates the initiative historically and, in particular, in relation to the experiences in the late 1970s and 1980s of the first community-based non-governmental career development organisation, the Careers Research and Information Centre (CRIC). It also locates it in relation to policy developments internationally. It argues that the time is ripe for a high-level national career development initiative in South Africa that could act as a catalyst for career development services across all education, training and work sectors, both public and private, within a lifelong learning philosophy and approach.

Confucian educational philosophy and its implication for lifelong learning and lifelong education

This paper, from historical and philosophical perspectives, presents Confucian education philosophy, a philosophy that is argued is a philosophy of lifelong learning. Examined and illustrated are the Confucian concepts of Sage, a Confucian ideal human model, and Jun Zi, a Confucian realistic educational result. Through Sage, Confucius presented us an ideal model of humanity, a model that uses lifelong learning as its method and processes. The Confucian model encourages becoming the undivided ‘I’ with the universe, the unity of ‘I’ with other human beings, and the wholeness of ‘I’ with ‘self’. Through Jun Zi, understood as a realistic educational end, Confucius demonstrated that lifelong learning and lifelong education are necessary processes in enabling human beings to realize and practice their true nature—that is, living happily in and with the worlds of different kinds: universe, nature, society/other human beings, and self. The examination of Confucian multi‐dimensional educational purposes and the practices of lifelong and life‐wide learning denote that Confucius’ educational philosophy rests upon a belief that the human beings are the ends, not the means, to being in the world. Therefore, Confucian educational philosophy presents us an alternative lens through which to view and ponder the limit of current practices of lifelong learning and lifelong education.

Desenvolvimento de empresários em empresas de pequeno porte do setor hoteleiro: processo de aprendizagem, competências e redes de relacionamento

Este estudo tem por objetivo analisar o desenvolvimento dos empresários em empreendimentos de pequeno porte do setor hoteleiro e enfocar o processo de aprendizagem por meio da análise das competências percebidas como necessárias ao desempenho dos negócios, das necessidades de treinamento, de como esses empresários percebem que aprendem e, finalmente, de como as redes de relacionamento (networks) interferem no processo. Tem natureza exploratória, qualitativa e interpretativa. Entrevistas pessoais semi-estruturadas foram realizadas com 30 proprietários de empreendimentos hoteleiros de pequeno porte em Sergipe, que foram estimulados a explicar as suas respostas. A discussão do seu desenvolvimento reforça algumas das constatações observadas na literatura quanto às dificuldades de descobrir formas de aumentar o nível de competência gerencial desses empresários e identificar estratégias de estímulo ao aprendizado contínuo.
