The article analyzes the existing experience in introducing information modeling technology for a capital construction project at various stages of the life cycle. It is noted that the use of technology is considered at individual stages of the capital construction project life cycle , but there is no mechanism for transition from one information model to another. It was revealed that the rules for maintaining as-built documentation, reflecting not only the actual execution of design and working documentation decisions, but also the actual state of the building structure or its individual elements, are regulated, and the existing approach assumes that the operation of the building will be based on working documentation with changes made to reflect the current state object, i.e. on the basis of as-built documentation.
 The feasibility of information model developing with a different set of detail and attribute coating, corresponding to various types of documentation: design, working and executive, is substantiated.
 A universal roadmap for the information modeling technologies implementation in a design company has been developed, a proposed structure for storing information models of a construction project has been given, and further steps have been proposed for the implementation of information modeling technologies at subsequent stages of the life cycle of a capital construction project to increase the efficiency of its application.

The article raises the problem of the necessity of systematization and practical use of multilevel planning model as a method of construction project life cycle management. The general approach to the formation of the model is defined, the levels of the model, the main stakeholders, and the ways of decomposition and integration of plans of different levels are identified, and a template for the practical use of the multilevel model is developed. The resulting model is a template of three levels of planning and several interrelated projects carried out in Primavera P6 Professional. The used model allows unifying the planning process and reducing the number of scheduling schedules. The template solution reduces the number of communication links between stakeholders involved in project management processes and improves the efficiency of management decision-making

Implementing Circular Economy throughout the Construction Project Life Cycle: A Review on Potential Practices and Relationships

The linear economy model that is generally practised in the construction industry is one of the main reasons hindering the achievement of sustainability in construction. Alternatively, the Circular Economy (CE) model is becoming a promising approach to achieve sustainable construction, in which materials and products are circulated at their highest economic value and, thereby, contribute towards mitigating the negative economic, social, and environmental impacts of the construction industry. For a successful transition towards CE in the construction industry, it is important not only to understand CE practices that could be implemented across different stages of the life cycle of construction projects, but also to understand how a particular practice relates to another at those stages. Having limited studies identifying such relationships, this study aims to improve the successful implementation of CE practices in the construction industry by comprehending the practices, along with their relationships, throughout the project life cycle. A qualitative research method consisting of a systematic literature review was adopted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework to identify CE practices. Amongst the identified highly cited CE practices applicable to construction projects, design for disassembly, design for adaptability and flexibility, and design for manufacture and assembly ended up being the most significant ones. Consequently, a relationship matrix was developed, highlighting the relationships among the highly cited practices. The matrix emphasises that practices applied in the design stage relate frequently to ones at the following stages, necessitating projects to start with proper planning. This study ultimately assists construction industry stakeholders in successfully and rationally implementing CE practices throughout the project life cycle while enhancing the value addition on the economy, society, and environment.

The application of operation research in the design of on-site construction organization

This article explores the integration of Operations Research (OR) principles in the design and management of on-site construction organizations. The first section introduces Operations Research as a multidisciplinary field that employs mathematical modelling, statistical analysis, and optimization techniques to enhance decision-making processes across various sectors. Key aspects such as mathematical modelling, optimization, decision analysis, simulation, queueing theory, linear programming, and game theory are highlighted. The second section focuses on the design of on-site construction organizations, emphasizing the structure and organization of resources, personnel, and processes essential for efficient project execution. Various key elements, including project management, site personnel, project support teams, engineering and design teams, health and safety personnel, procurement and supply chain, communication and coordination, equipment and maintenance, and environmental compliance, are discussed. The third section delves into the application of Operations Research techniques in the design and management of on-site construction organizations. It outlines how OR principles can be employed for resource allocation and optimization, project scheduling and planning, inventory management, equipment utilization, project costing and budgeting, risk management, supply chain management, human resource management, facility layout and design, and the development of decision support systems. The conclusion highlights that the strategic application of Operations Research methodologies contributes to enhanced efficiency, optimized resources, and improved decision-making throughout the construction project lifecycle. The integration of OR principles not only enhance the overall effectiveness of on-site construction organizations but also leads to cost savings, timely project completion, and improved project outcomes. As construction projects continue to grow in scale and complexity, the systematic and analytical approach provided by Operations Research becomes increasingly valuable in addressing the intricate challenges faced by construction stakeholders.

Life Cycle Cost Analysis of a Three-Storey Building in Abuja, Nigeria.

ABSTRACT This study conducts a Life Cycle Cost (LCC) Analysis on three-storey building in Abuja, Nigeria, addressing existing gaps in LCC approaches tailored to the challenges of the local building sector. The research aims to uncover financial allocations, decision making criteria, and sustainability factors throughout the construction project's life cycle, utilizing a mixed-methods approach for data collection. Structured questionnaires provide quantitative insights, while interviews and document analysis offer qualitative depth. Guided by a robust theoretical framework encompassing literature on life cycle costing, sustainability practices, and construction-specific decision-making criteria in Abuja, the study critically examines the life cycle costs of the building. It emphasizes identifying decision-making criteria that balance economic efficiency and sustainability. Anticipated outcomes include a nuanced understanding of life cycle costing dynamics in Abuja, providing actionable insights for project stakeholders and policymakers. The study contributes valuable insights to the broader discourse on life cycle costing in dynamic urban environments, aligning with global imperatives for sustainable construction practices. The research outcomes offer practical guidance for sustainable decision-making in construction projects, addressing both global principles and local complexities.

Methodology for Assessing the Level of Digitalization of the Construction Industry

As part of the study, a methodology was developed to assess the level of digitalization of the construction industry based on an analysis of the specifics of the functioning and process of introducing digital technologies into the work of construction organizations, as well as the existing methodological framework for assessing the level of use of digital technologies in various economic systems offered by international companies. The methodology is based on the current algorithm for introducing digital tools into the work of construction companies, which simultaneously reflects all stages of the life cycle of construction projects and the trend towards increasing the degree of digital interaction. The composition of the enlarged components of the digitalization level includes: the level of informatization of activities (the use of classical information systems and tools) of construction organizations, the level of digitalization of key management areas (design, construction of facilities, operation, control) of construction organizations and the level of digital interaction of construction organizations within the internal and external environment. The scientific novelty of the methodology lies in the adaptation of classical scientific approaches to the specifics of the construction complex with the simultaneous substantiation of the assessment system, which allows not only to establish the general level of digitalization, but also to identify the least digitalized areas, and also to determine at what stage of the transition to a digital model are individual construction organizations.

This article explores the application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies in managing the life cycle of construction projects, exemplified by the design of a country house. It details how BIM technologies facilitate the transition from traditional project documentation to comprehensive models that include detailed information about the object. Special attention is given to the use of Revit software for creating detailed architectural and engineering models.
 The article highlights an active shift towards digital technologies in Russian construction, including BIM, as evidenced by relevant legislative acts and directives. It describes the implementation of a country house project, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinating various project sections and preventing collisions through BIM.
 Research findings indicate that using the BIM approach significantly improves design speed, decision-making accuracy, and process coordination, which is crucial for projects requiring high precision and coordination. The conclusion is drawn that the active implementation of BIM in Russia represents a strategic direction in the construction industry, contributing to enhanced efficiency and quality of design.

In order to maintain the positive dynamics of the construction industry, the government is stimulating the development of the digital economy. In the interests of strengthening themselves and reducing the negative impact of the dynamic environment, construction companies are vectoring towards changing their business management mechanisms, seeking to be the first to benefit from changing circumstances. The study of best practices of digitalization in construction allows us to say that modern digital technologies can be successfully used at various stages of the life cycle of a capital construction project. By focusing on the qualifications of the engaged employees, keeping abreast of the technologies present in the industry, used by other construction participants and developing them and the corporate culture of the company, carrying out the transformation of the company's business processes, including digital, aligning it with its strategy, companies implement their activities taking into account today's realities. They become the most flexible, able to overcome unexpected obstacles without becoming dependent on changing conditions of existence.

In the context of the ongoing digitalization of the Russian economy as a whole and the construction industry in particular, solutions aimed at increasing the efficiency of construction organizations that carry out their functions at various stages of the construction project lifecycle remain in demand. Recognizing that the primary task of any organizations or enterprise in the construction industry, including project organizations, is the efficient using of all types of resources, the set objective can be achieved by reducing the organization’s overheads while at the same time increasing the efficiency of decisions aimed at managing core production processes. It is important to view the entire production process as a unified system with the ability to evaluate its performance indicators and forecast changes in these indicators when production process parameters will be changed.One potential modeling approach for the development of design and estimate documentation processes may involve conceiving it as a queuing system. From the authors’ perspective, in terms of queuing theory the activities of a project team under the guidance of the Chief project engineer (CPE) can be represented as a multi-phase open queuing network. The article provides computation formulas for the determining several key performances indicators of queuing system operation, which can be used to evaluate the performances of both individual performers of parts of the design and estimate documentation as well as the entire project team. Furthermore, this approach offers the possibility of calculating the effectiveness of changing these indicators with minimal expenses for the organization.

A Review of Dimension in Human Capacity Development for Construction Projects

The ability of engineers to adapt and compete is crucial for the success and effectiveness of an organisation. Human capacity development (HCD) has been acknowledged as a concept to improve individual and team skills in setting goals and maintaining the competencies needed to survive and thrive in a rapidly changing world. Therefore, it is important to focus on HCD in order to strengthen engineers for long-term efficiency. Although previous studies have primarily focused on environmental and economic dimensions, the social dimension, specifically HCD, has received less attention. This paper aims to identify the attributes of HCD in sustainable construction during different phases of a construction project's life cycle. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify and critically evaluate papers related to HCD. The attributes identified as important for improved company or agency performance include Leadership, Knowledgeability and Accountability. Based on these findings, management initiatives to apply HCD can improve performance among civil engineers.

A critical review of quantity surveying education in an offsite construction perspective: strategies for up-skilling

Purpose Offsite construction (OSC) is a modern method of construction (MMC) that involves manufacturing and assembly of buildings. Industry 4.0-driven technological advancements have accelerated OSC uptake causing many skilled construction workers requiring re-skilling or up-skilling. Quantity surveyors currently play an important role throughout a construction project life cycle, and hence, their knowledge on OSC projects is vital for the continuity of quantity surveying (QS) profession. The purpose of this paper is to critically review QS education in an OSC perspective and to propose strategies for up-skilling. Design/methodology/approach This research includes a detailed literature review of QS and OSC to evaluate how OSC affects the QS profession. Publicly available information on the university websites on accredited QS and construction management degrees was reviewed to identify OSC and MMC references, specifically the content listing and learning outcomes. Findings Out of the 315 degrees offered by 157 universities, only 69 degrees in 32 universities refer to OSC or MMC. OSC concept is explicitly referred in subjects related to construction technology, production management, lean construction, digital construction and MMC. As such, the research suggests including lean production principles, OSC techniques and design philosophies such as design for manufacture and assembly be added to the QS curricula. Research limitations/implications This research is a comprehensive desktop study that does not involve empirical data-based evaluation. Research findings inform strategies to improve QS education and professional competencies. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first of its kind that evaluates accredited QS degrees and learning requirements in an OSC perspective.

When managing the processes of implementing investment and construction projects, conditions of varying levels of uncertainty arise, giving rise to risky situations. Ignoring risk situations when implementing investment and construction projects leads to the emergence of risk combinations and increased risk costs and eliminating their consequences. Determining the risk intensity of a risk situation (combination) is becoming increasingly relevant; in this regard, the relevance of developing a model for monitoring the total cost of risks of investment and construction projects is increasing.
 The purpose of the study is to develop an economic and mathematical model for monitoring the total cost of risks of investment and construction projects. It has been established that in the military sphere, the amount of material costs for product development is significantly influenced by risks associated with the internal and external environment. This article examines existing models of investment and construction projects and identifies their distinctive aspects. The novelty of the ongoing research lies in the author’s approach to developing a model for monitoring the total cost of risks at various stages of the life cycle of investment and construction projects. The practical significance of the results lies in the possibility of monitoring the total cost of risks of investment and construction projects at all stages of its life cycle, estimating, based on the proposed model, the final total cost of investment and construction projects by summing up all the total costs of risks of the stages of investment and construction projects. These measures are aimed at preventing a risk situation or risk combination and ensuring the implementation of investment and construction projects. A design-process approach to feasibility studies and process management of investment and construction projects is proposed.
 Recommendations for applying the results obtained are the need to assess the total cost of risks of investment and construction projects at all stages of its life cycle in order to determine the source of its occurrence.

Machine learning multilayer perceptron method for building information modeling application in engineering performance prediction

ABSTRACT The engineering design process has fundamentally impacted the life cycle of construction projects and notably, the engineering performance is significantly measured in delivering projects. Previous studies on engineering performance have established the cause–effect relationships between project variables and performance measures. Recently, the building information modeling (BIM) application has reformed how owners execute the engineering, construction, commissioning, and operation in the industry. There has been an increasing focus in finding the benefits of BIM on project performance, however, a minor focus has been given to engineering performance. This paper proposes an artificial neural network (ANN) machine learning multilayer perceptron (MLMP) method and linear regression (LR) that correlates the use of BIM with engineering performance for better construction project assessment. The conclusions reveal a high-level correlation measure between BIM use inputs and engineering performance outputs and further methods for evaluating the engineering performance. Furthermore, we achieved and validated the best prediction by leveraging data from 60 samples using the MLMP and LR models.

The Effectiveness of Utilising the Building Information Modelling Based Tools for Safety Training and Job Hazard İdentification

The fields of architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) have kept pace with recent technological developments in design and construction. However, it is difficult to obtain information on the breadth of applications of BIM -based tools throughout the life cycle of construction projects. Hence, this study attempts to empirically identify and evaluate the applications of pre-construction tools, with a focus on safety training and workplace hazard recognition. A questionnaire in the form of a survey was used to collect data. The results show that the ten predictors account for 52.3% of the variation in BIM knowledge (F (10, 56) = 6.133, p < 0.001).It is also found that site analysis and safety instructions have no effect on the measured variable. The study represented a comprehensive blend of research to improve the use of BIM -based tools for safety training and workplace hazard identification. It also contributed to the knowledge of how to use BIM -based tools in the pre-construction phase. The development of the BIM -process flow framework for safety training and hazard identification will be the main focus of future work.

Success factors of pre-construction stages of Ghanaian public road construction project life cycle

The research article aims to determine the critical success factors (CSFs) of the pre-construction stages of the public road construction project life cycle in Ghana. Data on 26 CSFs and 16 success criteria were collected from key stakeholders across Ghana through a questionnaire survey. The data was then analyzed using structural equation modelling (SEM). The study showed that external environmental factors and project management factors directly influence success across the pre-construction phases of the Ghanaian public road construction project life cycle whereas procurement-related factors only influence the success of the works procurement phase. The research outcome would inspire construction industry stakeholders to be dynamic and pay utmost attention to the application of the CSFs identified across the pre-construction phases of the Ghanaian public road construction project life cycle. This is the first study wherein the influence of CSFs across the pre-construction stages of the public road construction project life cycle in Ghana is identified. Thus, it extends public road construction project management literature in Ghana. The study is limited to equipment-intensive public construction projects in Ghana.

Value generation analysis within the design process of construction projects in Chile

Value generation occurs during the life cycle of construction projects. However, the ability to influence the projects' characteristics at the design stage increases the probability of maximizing value. Nevertheless, few studies assess value creation during the design. Considering this gap, the aim of this paper is to analyze the value generated at the design stage of Chilean construction projects. The research method responds to a descriptive type of study consisting of three stages: design value attributes definition, assessment and quantitative measurement of value applying a Value Analysis Model recently developed, and value comparison. Twenty-eight value attributes were selected from literature review and grouped into seven satisfaction conditions. The value assessment was performed through a questionnaire applied to 47 Chilean companies within the construction industry. The main findings show that 1) companies, in general, have low-value expectations related to the design process and, in turn, low-value generation, which can be negatives values; 2) projects tend to compensate the lack of indispensable attributes with the inclusion of attractive features, thereby demonstrating an absence of prioritization; and 3) the satisfaction conditions with the highest value generation are business environment, schedule and budget, and with lowest value generated are deliverables, integration and tools and technology. The primary contribution of this study is be useful to designers, managers and researchers, as it provides information on focus attributtes that require appropriate care to improve value within design-build processes; and for any project or company wanting to know its value benchmarking concerning other projects.

Decarbonisation of the Built Environment: using integrated life cycle and carbon emissions reporting

The built environment sector must significantly reduce carbon emissions throughout the design, construction, operation, maintenance, and end-of-life stages. As decarbonisation targets and regulations are announced, construction professionals must implement workflows that allow stakeholders to make prudent decisions. The cost of decarbonisation is one such workflow that needs to be addressed so options can be compared and capital expenditure and operational expenditure decisions can be made. The International Cost Management Standard (ICMS) 3rd edition provides an integrated taxonomy for classifying, defining, measuring, recording, analysing, presenting, and comparing entire life cycle costs and carbon emissions of constructed assets at a regional, national, or international level. With the help of two case studies, the importance of internationally agreed standards to achieve decarbonisation targets and decarbonise the construction sector cost-effectively will be discussed. The discussion will also highlight the role of downstream experts such as quantity surveyors, facility managers, and project managers in the decarbonisation efforts. ICMS-based solutions support sustainable investment strategies by bringing much-needed transparency and cross-border comparability of embodied and operational carbon across the life cycle of construction projects. The use of ICMS benefits all construction stakeholders who wish to reduce carbon for compliance, market, and societal reasons and drive innovation in alternative designs and solutions.

Prospects for the Use of BIM Technologies at All Stages of the Life Cycle of an Investment and Construction Project

Introduction. At the present stage, domestic enterprises in the construction industry are faced with a number of difficulties. The increased uncertainty of the economic situation in the country forces the organizations of the construction sector, when implementing investment and construction projects, to adapt to newly emerging circumstances, shorten the planning horizon, and apply modern technologies and management methods. BIM technologies demonstrate their effectiveness at all stages of the life cycle of construction projects, which makes them promising to use in the current realities.Materials and Methods. The possibilities of using BIM technologies in construction projects are becoming wider - from the familiar design using digital models to the creation of extensive databases used in modeling the processes of operation of objects, their reconstruction or demolition. Today, BIM technologies are an effective tool for achieving the internal goals of construction organizations and for organizing effective interaction with the end user of construction products.Results. The use of BIM technologies makes it possible to make effective technical, organizational and technological decisions, both in strategic planning and in operational management during the implementation of investment and construction projects. Information modeling technologies save resources at all stages of the project life cycle, but the best results can be achieved with an integrated approach to their implementation.Discussion and Conclusions. Having been widely used in foreign construction practice, BIM technologies make it possible to reduce the total cost and timing of the implementation of investment and construction projects and at the same time improve the quality of design and survey work and construction and installation work. Qualitative and quantitative benefits for organizations in the construction industry in the implementation of information modeling technologies determine the interest in them from Russian companies. In the context of active digital transformation, including with the support of the state, BIM technologies are becoming a tool for optimizing the activities of construction enterprises in the implementation of investment and construction projects at each of their stages, as well as increasing the competitiveness of firms in the domestic and foreign markets.

Roadworks design: study on selection of construction materials in the preliminary design phase based on economic performance

The preliminary design phase transforms the investor’s ideas and information into general plans, drawings and specifications and helps the project managers continue the next steps in the projects. Material selection is an essential task to incorporate sustainable content into the construction industry. This paper reviewed materials selection studies and proposed a comprehensive method to compare the economic performance of construction material alternatives in this phase. The article constructed a life cycle costing equation used in the preliminary design stage that compared the total expected cost of the alternatives throughout the road construction project life cycle. The proposed life cycle cost method was divided into two scenarios according to the available information in the preliminary design phase and the material-dependent costs. A case study in Vietnam about the selection between baked bricks and concrete bricks was presented to demonstrate the proposed equations and models. The result showed that the baked bricks took the top priority due to the differences in cost items (e.g., transportation costs). Furthermore, to validate the models, they were applied to compare the expected and actual cost of 18 road construction projects in Vietnam – the differences are all below 10%. Further research may focus on building a database of models by applying the Building Information Model (BIM).
