Fostering Design for Sustainability through the Adoption of Computer-Aided Engineering Tools in the Development of Energy-Related Products

The main challenge to face in the development of energy-related products is represented by the adoption of effective design for sustainability strategies that encompasses the adoption of engineering design tools, knowledge collection, and reuse/sharing in technical departments. This present paper proposes an engineering design for sustainability methodology that assists engineers in developing energy-related products in compliance with ecodesign standards. The methodology uses virtual prototyping tools to assess energy consumption in compliance with energy labeling directives and analyze different use scenarios. The results obtained by numerical simulations (e.g., Finite Element Method—FEM, Computational Fluid Dynamics—CFD) are used to create specific design eco-knowledge in the field of energy-related products. Numerical results are linked with design configurations to understand the benefits introduced by engineering design choices. This knowledge is stored in a structured database with the aim of being reused when a new product is developed or improved/upgraded. The case study of an induction hob, belonging to the household appliance product family, is investigated to understand the potential and drawbacks of the presented approach in a real application. The results show that potential energy and environmental performance benefits are achieved (e.g., reduction of energy losses, achievement of A+ energy class, and overall life cycle environmental impact reduction). Additionally, a new set of ecodesign guidelines are defined for this product family and employed in developing new compliant products belonging to the same family.

Considering product life cycle characteristics and industry background in environmental impact analysis and application: a case study of a television.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is widely used to evaluate product's life cycle environmental impact and identify the environmental weaknesses. However, it is difficult for existing LCA software to perform flexible LCA analysis based on the product life cycle characteristics and industry background. Meanwhile, under the existing LCA research model, product designers and manufacturers are usually not LCA evaluators, resulting in a certain time gap between the evaluation results and product improvement. Designers with less experience in green design often find it difficult to identify high environmental impact links in products at different life cycle stages and product levels, and updated products are challenging to meet various environmental restrictions. This paper establishes a multi-module product life cycle analysis model that combines product industry background that includes basic information, assessment information, structural information, and restriction information to achieve the multi-scenario of product LCA in different dimensions in a typical domain. The calculated mechanism of the dynamic power emission factor is built according to the service time and space dimensions. The proposed method forms an integrated environmental performance evaluation of household appliance (EPEHA) system. A software assessment and an optimization method are proposed to improve the EPEHA system. The results of this study show that these proposed methods can improve the timeliness and diversity of results analysis of product LCA in the field of household appliances in China. The universal data exchange format and simple operation interface of the EPEHA system enable people related to the product to quickly understand the environmental impact of the product in different scenarios, even if they lack green design knowledge and professional software training.

Assessing green methanol vehicles' deployment with life cycle assessment-system dynamics model

Due to the high CO2 emissions during the coal-to-methanol process, conventional coal-to-methanol vehicles' life cycle environmental impact is significant. As the world's largest market for methanol vehicle applications, China is exploring a ‘green methanol vehicles’ route: using CO2-to-methanol or biomass-to-methanol in internal combustion engine vehicles. However, the economy, effectiveness in reducing carbon emissions, and changes in resource consumption of green methanol vehicles have yet to be investigated. This study first conducts a ‘Resource-Environment-Economy’ life cycle assessment on vehicles from different routes, including green methanol vehicles. Next, this study builds a system dynamics model based on the Resource-Environment-Economy assessment boundaries to predict the development trend of green methanol vehicles in the designed scenarios. CO2-to-methanol vehicle emits 24% less CO2 over their life cycle than gasoline vehicle, which can be a reasonable alternative from 2028. By 2030, biomass-to-methanol vehicle has a high development potential with minimal energy and less water consumption. It suggests that green methanol vehicles be incorporated into new energy vehicles and enjoy preferential policies.

Plastic Paradox in Blue Carbon Ecosystems.

Plastics are rapidly accumulating in blue carbon ecosystems, i.e., mangrove forests, tidal marshes, and seagrass meadows. Accumulated plastic is diverted from the ocean, but the extent and nature of impacts on blue carbon ecosystem processes, including carbon sequestration, are poorly known. Here, we explore the potential positive and negative consequences of plastic accumulation in blue carbon ecosystems. We highlight the effects of plastic accumulation on organic carbon stocks and sediment biogeochemistry through microbial metabolism. The notion of beneficial plastic accumulation in blue carbon ecosystems is controversial, yet considering the alternative impacts of plastics on oceanic and aboveground environments, this may be the "lesser of evils". Using environmental life cycle impact assessment, we propose a research framework to address the potential positive and negative impacts of plastic accumulation in blue carbon ecosystems. Considering the multifaceted benefits, we prioritize expanding and managing blue carbon ecosystems, which may help with ecosystem conservation, as well as mitigating the negative effects of plastic.

Life cycle environmental impact assessment of natural gas distributed energy system

Natural gas distributed energy is recognized as a pivotal means to enhance energy efficiency and mitigate carbon dioxide emissions through localized energy cascading. Positioned as a key option for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, this system optimizes energy utilization near end-users. While maximizing energy efficiency, it is imperative to address potential environmental challenges. A thorough, comprehensive environmental assessment, facilitated by the life cycle assessment method, proves instrumental in meeting this standard. Employing this method enables an intuitive grasp of the environmental strengths and weaknesses inherent in natural gas distributed energy within the power structure. This insight serves as a foundation for informed project decision-making, fostering the growth of the industry. We selected six environmental impact assessment categories based on the CML 2001 method, and conducted the life cycle analysis across four stages. China's inaugural natural gas distributed energy demonstration project was chosen as a model case, and an environmental impact assessment inventory was established, utilizing survey data and literature for comprehensive data collection and analysis. Results from case testing yield environmental impact assessment outcomes, with a specific sensitivity analysis for stages with notable environmental impact factors. The study underscores that the operation phase has the highest environmental impact, comprising 78.37% of the total combined environmental impact, followed by the fuel production phase. Comparative analyses with coal-fired and conventional natural gas power generation, based on dimensionless literature data, reveal that abiotic resources depletion potential is the primary contributor to the environmental impact of 1 kWh of electricity product, constituting 52.76% of the total impact value, followed by global warming potential. Concrete strategies have been outlined for decision-making in both the operational and planning phases of natural gas distributed energy projects. The strengthening of policies is pinpointed towards grid connection and scale expansion.

Environmentally sustainable ethyl levulinate synthesis from delignified sugarcane bagasse using ternary eutectic solvent under MW-xenon irradiation: engine performance and emission assessment.

For the first time, a synergistic energy-efficient combination of microwave-xenon (MW-XE) irradiations in presence of photoactive ternary acidic deep eutectic solvents (TADES) has been applied for intensification of ethyl levulinate synthesis from delignified sugarcane bagasse (DSB) under mild (90min, 90°C) and environmentally benign process conditions. The Taguchi orthogonal designed optimized conditions (20 W/cm3 of MW specific irradiation power input, 1 mol/mol of FeCl3 to citric acid ratio, 90min of reaction time, 150 W of XE specific power input) rendered maximum 61.3mol% of EL yield (selectivity: 87.70 [Formula: see text] 0.5%). Remarkably, synergistic effect of MW and XE irradiation significantly enhanced the EL yield (61.3mol%) compared to the individual MW (34.52mol%) and XE (22.67mol%) irradiation at otherwise optimized reaction conditions. Moreover, the MWXE irradiated reactor (MWXER) exhibited a significant 79.10% increase in EL yield compared to the conventional thermal reactor (CTR), at the expense of 10% less energy consumption. The ethyl levulinate could be recovered efficiently through green protocol from reaction mix resulting in high purity (97 [Formula: see text] 0.5%) and TADES was sustainably reused in the process. The optimally generated product EL when blended (5 and 10 vol.%) with B10 and B20 (10% and 20% biodiesel-diesel blend) could provide 21-31% reduction in HC and 7.3-36% reduction in CO in comparison with petro-diesel. It was also explored that, at similar optimal parametric combinations, the TADES produced 29.5% greater EL yield in comparison with the standard ionic liquid BMIMCl. The life cycle environmental impact analysis (LCEIA) of the overall process revealed that the 5 vol.% EL blending with B10 contributed lowest environmental impacts mitigating marine ecotoxicity, human toxicity, fossil depletion, and climate change by 77.9%, 77.4%, 78.4% and 77.5%, respectively.

Development of a voxel-based CAD system for upstream life cycle design and its application to LCA

The comprehensive design of product life cycles is a promising approach to realizing circular manufacturing systems. However, design support systems that can be used for the life cycle design during upstream stages have not been established. The purpose of this study is to develop an easy-to-use CAD system for the early stages of product life cycle design. The system supports creating a product model in voxel format and a life cycle process model as a process network in an integrated manner. The voxel models make it easy to create the rough shape of products and quantify the mass of each component for LCA. An LCD monitor's life cycle was designed using the proposed CAD tool. Fourteen design candidates were created and LCA was performed to compare the designs from the perspective of life cycle environmental impact. Through the case study, we confirmed that the tool is a practical system that can quantitatively examine what design improvements contributed to the reduction of environmental impact at an early design stage before creating detailed 3D-CAD models.

A Comparative Analysis and Design of Industrial Building Using Hot Rolled Section and Cold Formed Section for Sustainability

Abstract: Structural Steel is a typical building material utilised in the building sector. Its main function is to serve as the framework for the structure i.e, the portion of the structure that keeps everything else in place. Steel is 100% recyclable, making it one of the greenest materials available. This study conducts a comparative analysis and design of an industrial building, evaluating the sustainability implications of employing hot-rolled and cold-formed steel sections. Examining mechanical properties, life cycle environmental impact, and cost-effectiveness, the research aims to provide insights into the structural and environmental benefits of each section type. By optimizing the integration of hot-rolled and cold-formed sections, the study seeks to enhance overall sustainability, considering factors such as energy consumption and material efficiency. Through case studies, this research offers a concise yet comprehensive exploration of how the combined use of these sections can contribute to environmentally conscious and resource-viable industrial building design. The findings aim to inform industry professionals, architects, and engineers about making sustainable choices in the construction process.

Life cycle environmental impact assessment of titanium dioxide production in China

Titanium dioxide (TiO2), a widely used superior and versatile material, has imposed considerable energy and environmental impacts with its increasing demand and production. To guarantee the sustainable development of TiO2, this study assesses and forecasts the multiple environmental impacts of two mainstream TiO2 production technologies using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method. Results show that toxicity is the dominant environmental impact caused by TiO2 production. The chloride route has better environmental performance than the sulphate route except for global warming. Sulfuric acid, electricity, and steam are the key factors contributing to environmental burdens. Production of TiO2 pigment is the key stage to cause environmental impact for the sulphate route, whereas, the production of high‑titanium slag and TiO2 pigment are dominant stages for the chloride route. Nonrenewable-fossil is the largest source of cumulative energy demand (CED) consumption in both routes. Therefore, scenarios on renewable electricity transition under carbon neutral target and enhancing chloride route are simulated, revealing a 43% reduction of environmental impact mitigation potential. Finally, policy implications on the transition to renewable energy, chloride technology, and circular economy for TiO2 production are proposed.

A Multi-Objective Optimization Method for the Design of a Sustainable House in Ecuador by Assessing LCC and LCEI

The building industry significantly contributes to global warming, driving the demand for sustainable construction and green buildings. However, barriers like cost concerns and limited knowledge persist. Previous studies have used multi-objective optimization (MOO) to minimize life cycle cost and environmental impact, often emphasizing energy efficiency. In equatorial climates, unique factors like material selection must be considered. This study assesses the cost-effectiveness of sustainable materials, focusing on envelope materials in Ecuador. The case study is a single-family house in the equatorial climate, optimized using Building Information Modeling (BIM), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA). In this study, a MOO process using the weighted sum approach (WSA) identifies sustainable house designs. The sustainable houses achieve a 98% decrease in Ozone Depletion Potential, a 75% reduction in Global Warming Potential, and a 45% drop in Primary Energy Demand, although they still incur a 30% increased cost. The results offer a foundation for cost-effective, eco-friendly housing solutions. Bamboo emerges as a promising material with local acceptance. This research highlights the significance of material selection in sustainable construction and provides a replicable approach for diverse settings. It aims to promote sustainable housing solutions in Ecuador and beyond.

Life cycle environmental impact assessment of green tea production in China

Tea is the second most popular beverage in the world after water, and the potential environmental problems during the entire life cycle stages of its production have not been thoroughly discussed. This study aims to investigate the overall environmental impact of green tea production as a typical perennial crop in China with the system boundary from “cradle to gate”. Scenario analysis is carried out to investigate the factors of green tea processing scales and packaging methods on the overall environmental impact level of green tea production in China. Results showed that the average overall global warming potential of procuring 1 kg dry green tea in China ranges from 10.4 to 15.6 kg CO2eq, depending on different processing scales and packaging methods. The processing stage is the dominant contributor to the overall environmental impact of producing 1 kg dry green tea product due to the use of electricity. Electricity consumption in the processing stage and chemical fertilizer application in the planting stage are identified as the environmental hotspots throughout the life cycle of green tea production in China. Optimizing energy structure and improving energy use efficiency in the processing stage, as well as reducing the amount of chemical fertilizer application are the critical measures needed to mitigate the environmental emissions of green tea throughout the life cycle.

Enhancing Indoor Environmental Quality and Sustainability in Post-Pandemic Office Settings: A Study on Displacement Ventilation Feasibility

The COVID-19 pandemic has catalyzed global efforts toward transitioning to a sustainable society, driving rapid innovation in building technologies, working practices, building design, and whole life cycle environmental impact consideration. In this pursuit, this study explores the enduring impact of these on an alternative ventilation approach for both existing building renovations and new building implementations. Comparing displacement ventilation to mixed-mode ventilation in a Finnish office building with varying occupancy densities, this study examines indoor air quality (IAQ), thermal comfort, total building energy performance, and embodied carbon. The findings reveal that the basic case of mixed ventilation has a specified system primary energy value of 38.83 kWh/m2 (with 28 occupants) and 39.00 kWh/m2 (with 24 occupants), respectively. With the displacement ventilation alternative, it reduces this by 0.3% and 0.1%, enhancing thermal comfort and decreasing turbulence as well as having a marginal decrease in embodied carbon. In general, the study offers three-fold contributions: insights into post-pandemic office mechanical ventilation design with an emphasis on sustainability and ecological footprint considerations, a concrete case study addressing climate action and human-centric IAQ design, and a multifaceted analysis using the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) paradigm, contributing to the groundwork for associated future research and policy progress.

Comparative Life Cycle Environmental Impact Assessment of Fruit and Vegetable Waste Valorization by Anaerobic Digestion as an Alternative in a Mediterranean Market

Landfilling and incineration are the most widely used methods for the management and treatment of fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) in Mediterranean markets, despite their potential environmental impact. A comparative life cycle assessment was conducted in this study to evaluate the environmental improvements from replacing the current landfill disposal method for FVW management and treatment in the wholesale market of Amman (Jordan) with an integrated anaerobic digestion process followed by composting. The proposed FVW treatment scenario is the best treatment option for all the assessed impact categories under the system expansion approach. Significant reductions in global warming and terrestrial ecotoxicity impacts categories would be achieved, reaching up to 322% and 352%, respectively, when compared to the current treatment scenario. Furthermore, the higher production of electrical energy (413%), as well as the production of co-products that would avoid the production of 100 kg/d of inorganic fertilizers, would contribute to such a low value of avoided impacts.

Life cycle assessment of biofuel production from waste date stones using conventional and microwave pyrolysis

Date palm trees play a crucial role in the provision of essential nutrition by producing date fruits and are widely cultivated in Qatar. The processing of date fruits generates substantial quantities of carbon-rich date stone possessing remarkable energy potential. This inherent energy can be harnessed by applying pyrolysis techniques, which facilitate the production of many products with commercial value. Despite being a novice process, microwave (MW) pyrolysis has emerged as a promising avenue for converting biomass waste into eco-friendly biofuels. Nonetheless, the adoption of this new approach necessitates a comprehensive exploration of its ecological implications, warranting a meticulous life-cycle analysis (LCA) to ascertain its environmental footprint. As a result, using GaBi software, this study compares the life-cycle environmental impact of conventional and microwave-aided pyrolysis processes of date stone waste. The study also assesses the techno-economic analysis of the two processes. The physical and thermal analyses of the date stone waste indicated that the biomass is a high-energy source (Net calorific value-15.6 MJ/kg). While the life-cycle assessment indicated that MW pyrolysis has a greater implication on climate change (14.94 % more), ozone depletion (14.29 % more), ionizing radiation (14.36 % more), and photochemical ozone production (14.44 % more) than conventional pyrolysis. This demonstrates that conventional pyrolysis is less harmful to the environment than MW pyrolysis. The techno-economic analysis infers that conventional pyrolysis mode is superior to MW pyrolysis for the valorisation of date stone waste in terms of profitability, financial stability, and overall success.

Life cycle environmental and economic assessment of Tetra Pak recycling technologies

Tetra Pak, a typical low-value waste, is one of the great challenges faced by municipal solid waste management but is rarely investigated. Therefore, this study takes Shanghai, China as a case to evaluate the life cycle environmental impacts and costs of Tetra Pak recycling technologies. The indicator of social cost that integrates life cycle environmental impact and economic cost is innovatively proposed. We found the three recycling technologies all exhibit better environmental performance than incineration. Chemical Separation (technology 2) has the largest environmental mitigation impacts, with climate change and resource consumption mitigation being 2.5 times and 3.8 times that of incineration, respectively. From an economic perspective, plastic-wood technology is the optimal, with a net economic benefit of 2900 RMB/ton Tetra Pak. While from social cost perspective, technology 2 is the best, achieving 6731 RMB/ton benefit. We suggest promoting Tetra Pak recycling technology 2, establishing recycling system, and strengthening end-of-pipe companies.

Integrated Sustainable Product Design With Warranty and End-of-Use Considerations

Abstract The concept of integrated sustainable product design has recently emerged, aiming to incorporate downstream life cycle performance into the initial product design to enhance sustainability. Various sustainable product design tools based on life cycle assessment or quality function deployment have been established while the impact of reliability on circular practices has received limited attention. Recognizing the critical role of product reliability in post-design performance, this paper develops a product design optimization model that considers the warranty performance and the effect of end-of-use options. The model takes into account the effect of uncertain operating conditions on product reliability. Two optimization goals including the minimization of expected unit life cycle cost and environmental impact are achieved by the model. To demonstrate the benefits of the integrated approach, the model is applied to an electric motor design problem. The results highlight that integrating end-of-use options in the early design phase leads to adjustments in component selection and reliability design. Moreover, the circular utilization of used products enables cost savings throughout the product’s life cycle and contributes to environmental impact reduction. Lastly, the study analyzes the effects of operating conditions, warranty policies, and take-back prices for used products on design decisions, providing valuable insights for product designers.

Life cycle energy, economic, and environmental analysis for the direct-expansion photovoltaic-thermal heat pump system in China

The photovoltaic-thermal heat pump system, which integrates multiple energy technologies, can meet the building's diverse energy needs. This study evaluates the energy, economic, and environmental performance of a direct-expansion photovoltaic-thermal heat pump system for domestic hot water supply through a life cycle approach. The annual thermal and electrical outputs are estimated. On this basis, economic analysis is conducted with indicators of life cycle cost, levelized cost of heat, and investment payback time. Moreover, a detailed life cycle assessment is performed to evaluate the environmental impact, following three methods: cumulative energy demand, IPCC 2021 global warming potential, and ReCiPe 2016 Endpoint. Results show that the proposed system is highly effective, with a 9.67% increase in annual electricity output over traditional photovoltaic systems and a self-sufficient rate of 88.21%. The system also has a significantly lower environmental impact than conventional heating systems, with a life cycle environmental impact of only 3–5% compared to electric boilers. The environmental payback time ranges from 0.33 to 5.18 years, according to the three methods used in the study, which is shorter than the investment payback time of 2.49–5.21 years, suggesting the need for cost reduction for future promotion. Moreover, electricity consumption during the operation stage accounts for 32–52% of the total environmental impacts. Thus, decarbonization of the power grid and improvements in system efficiency can significantly reduce the system's environmental footprint. Overall, the photovoltaic-thermal heat pump system is an intriguing strategy for building energy conservation, offering high energy efficiency, acceptable costs, and low environmental impact.

Lifecycle Assessment of Two Urban Water Treatment Plants of Pakistan

Water treatment technologies are striving to retain their ecological and economic viability despite the rising demand, conventional infrastructure, financial constraints, fluctuating climatic patterns, and highly stringent regulations. This study evaluates the lifecycle environmental impact of urban water treatment systems within the two densely populated South Asian municipalities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Pakistan. The scope of this study includes a process-based Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the entire water treatment system, particularly the resources and materials consumed during the operation of the treatment plant. The individual and cumulative environmental impact was assessed based on the treatment system data and an in-depth lifecycle inventory analysis. Other than the direct emissions to the environment, the electricity used for service and distribution pumping, coagulant use for floc formation, chlorine gas used for disinfection, and caustic soda used for pH stabilization were the processes identified as the most significant sources of emissions to air and water. The water distribution consumed up to 98% of energy resources. The highest global warming impacts (from 0.3 to 0.6 kg CO2 eq./m3) were assessed as being from the coagulation and distribution processes due to extensive electricity consumption. Direct discharge of the wash and wastewater to the open environment contributed approximately 0.08% of kg-N and 0.002% of kg-P to the eutrophication potential. The outcome of this study resulted in a thorough lifecycle inventory development, including possible alternatives to enhance system sustainability. A definite gap was identified in intermittent sampling at the treatment systems. However, more stringent sampling including the emissions to air can provide a better sustainability score for each unit process.

Environmental economic profiles of expressway construction via life cycle assessment

The construction process of expressway is characterized by high energy and materials consumption, which poses overwhelming potential threat to the physical environment. In order to coordinate contradiction between expressway construction and concomitant environment issues, this study quantitatively assessed environmental impact of different sub-projects and presented an environmental price model to characterize the overall environmental impact of construction materials. The results showed that the bridge, culvert, and tunnel sub-projects produced the most significant environmental impact. Compared with onsite construction and transportation, material production contributed the largest proportion (approximately 90%) of the life cycle environmental impact. Most of the environmental burdens were only associated with a few types of materials (e.g., steel, iron, and cement). Steel, in particular, contributed to 29.73%–80.47% in the four categories of environmental impact (including global warming potential (GWP), fine particulate matter production (FPMF), terrestrial acidification (TA), and ozone formation health (OF-H) in four sub-projects (including bridge and culvert, tunnel, safety measures and embedded pipelines (SMEP), and green and environmental protection facilities (GEPF)).Notably, certain materials contributed significantly to only specific environmental impact categories of environmental impact. Cement, wood, and explosives contributed significantly to GWP, land use (LU), and substance of ozone depletion (SOD)contributing 51.55%, 70.87%, and 54.95%, respectively. Environmental impact ratio can indicate the matching degree between the environmental impact of a material and its production process. For some materials with high environmental impact ratio, such as iron, brick and cement, a focus on green update and iteration of production technologies of such construction materials are required. This study identifies the environmentally sensitive links of different expressway construction sub-projects and provides a decision-making basis for the selection of construction materials and upgradation and iteration of production technologies from the perspective of environmental price, thus providing scientific guidance to green expressway construction.
