Hawthorne's Literature for Children.

In this study, Laffrado examines a long-neglected but significant aspect of Nathaniel Hawthorne's literary career - his writings for children. In turning to children's literature, Hawthorne endeavoured to transform the prevailing practices of the genre by providing young people with books that were both well crafted and truthful about history, experience, faith and the threats to innocence in a world of rationalism and materialism. The writer's ventures into children's literature began in 1841 with a series of historical stories: Grandfather's Chair, Famous Old People and Liberty Tree; these were followed in 1842 by Biographical Stories for Children. The author's last children's books: A Wonder for Boys and Girls (1851) and Tanglewood Tales (1853) were collections of stories based on classical myths. Through an analysis of these six books, Laffrado aims to develop a new biographical and intertextual perspective on Hawthorne's art and re-envisions the trajectory of his literary career. These works, she argues, reflect the concerns of his major writings, as well as those of his culture. Evident in his children's books, are Hawthorne's despair at artistic failure, his concerns about a mass culture and a US divided by sectional differences and his ambiguous attitudes toward gender relations. Laffrado also explores how changes in narrator, subject matter and framing devices in these works reflect stages in Hawthorne's personal life - from the financially struggling bachelor and unsuccessful author of the early collections to the happily married, successful writer of A Wonder Book and, finally, to the man worn out by age, reflecting on the losses of his own life in Tanglewood Tales.

La Révolution française vue et vécue de Constantinople (1789-1795)

Onnik Jamgocyan, " The French Revolution observed and lived through from Constantinople, 1789-1795." This study deals with the attitudes of a neutral country, the Ottoman Empire as it was confronted by the French Revolution and helps us understand the failings and difficulties of the revolutionary government in the realm of foreign policy; it also follows the daily life of the some 250 French who lived in Constantinople. In spite of the Sultan's aversion to the Revolution, a real current of interest and sympathy existed among the elite and even at court. Although the Frenchman Semonville was not admitted, Descorches was working towards an alliance between the Republic and the Sublime Porte. Caution was the rule for both parties up until 1795 when Verninac was allowed to enter as envoy extraordinary. In spite of the arrival of French émigrés especially after 1792, by and large the French merchants remained loyal to their country; thanks to Descorches cautious attitude and although the comercial relations with the East had become disorganized, they did receive belated news from home. No club was organized but a liberty tree was planted and remnants of the Ancien Régime were abolished.

Benedict Arnold and Cesar Chavez, John Wilkes Booth and Martin Luther King, Sirhan Sirhan, the Berrigans, the Founding Fathers, and the suffragists - all have engaged in political behaviour defined at one time or another as 'criminal'. Though the fire and fury of some of these names have been dimmed by the passage of time, their protest, civil disobedience, and even rebellion are refreshed in every American generation. Now revised and expanded, this widely praised and monumental work (awarded 'Best Book in Law' by the Association of American Publishers) chronicles the uninterrupted and ongoing story of dissent, disobedience, violence, and rebellion in America, from the colonial era to the Oklahoma City bombing. New to this edition are documents dealing with acts that again challenge the limits of acceptable rebellion - documents relating to such topics as the Iran-Contra affair, the Waco siege, the capture of Manuel Noriega, church arson, the struggle for cyberspace, the Republic of Texas, and the Unabomber. Political criminals are as diverse as American society and history. They are not always violent, and some are not even activists. Their crimes might be merely failing to perform legal duties, such as swearing allegiance to the nation or ignoring the draft. rights of women to vote and workers to strike, taken for granted today, have their roots in acts that the state once prosecuted. Echoes of these past struggles may resound today in fights for prayer in school and for animal rights. Available as a single hardcover or in two paper volumes (the first ranging from colonial times through World War II, and the second dealing with the Post-War era to the New World Order). The Tree of Liberty focuses on these and other issues in documents that span an extraordinary range. Supreme Court decisions and newspapers accounts, presidential proclamations and anarchist flyers, speeches, trial transcripts, diaries, letters, laws, media broadcasts, and Internet postings - the more than 400 documents in The Tree of Life forcefully demonstrates how challenges to government and authority have shaped the nation's thought, history, and freedom.

THE ARBRE DE LA LIBERTÉ (TREE OF LIBERTY) AS A TREE, A SYMBOL AND A LINGUISTIC SIGN Studying a corpus of 518 texts taken from the Archives parlementaires (1789-1794), the author shows how the old maypole turns, during the year 1790, into the tree of liberty. A distinction is made between the real tree and the symbol. The tree of liberty, an emblematic sign of the French Revolution, changes according to the historical events. Grégoire writes about it an important Essai in 1794. But the tree of liberty never breaks away from its traditional roots.

The Batteurs and the Informer's Eye: A Labour Dispute under the French Second Empire

The Second Empire opened in silence. By 1852 the republican brush fire was extinguished. No one dared speak out, action was forbidden. The French people subsided into obedience. Out of all the heady social experiments of 1848 there remained only a handful of co-operative societies which, as the price of survival, forgot their revolutionary birth, praised the Empire, and forbade political discussion in the same breath. In our own day, statisticians searching through the archives for solid events of protest to codify from the years that followed have met with little success. Historians of the period have found that the labouring poor suffered, but have not found out what they believed or talked about. Disenfranchised and closely watched, they kept their forbidden thoughts to themselves. [1] From even as late as 1851 there is still plentiful evidence of political expression, albeit much of it veiled and ambiguous. Carnival revellers planted liberty trees, masks over their faces, and scattered before the police could catch them. [2] But by the following year, with the cause of the republic now defeated beyond hope, even symbolic protest was abandoned. Of course, no one in the government mistook this silence for acceptance. Prefects and public prosecutors in their reports to Paris made it perfectly clear that the working class had 'submitted, rather than rallied' to the Empire, as one official put it. [3] But submission was judged sufficient; Napoleon III was prepared to wink at disloyalty so long as it was not publicly expressed. It seems possible, therefore, that a spirit of opposition was kept alive through private conversations and casual meetings: not just among committed militants, about whom we know a great deal since they were under constant police surveillance, but in the community at large as well. Needless to say, this sort of expression has rarely left any trace in the surviving documents. By chance, however, there is a set of reports from a blundering government informer named Vermesse that confirms this possibility for at least one town. Vermesse was active for a few months in 1856 in the northern factory town of Lille. He was an amateur, hired on the spur of the moment to find out about a hangman's noose discovered in the back room of a spinning mill. Sensing that his job depended on finding proof of a conspiracy among the labourers, or, short of that, on giving continual proof of his own diligence, Vermesse went too deeply into details. He

Our American Heritage: Trees

The first tree introduced into America was the peach, by the Spaniards in the early 16th century. Pears, apples, cherries, quince, and plums followed in 1638 and again in 1663. Survival of man was foremost. The first tree shipped from America was the arbor-vitae, to France, before 1550. Indians used tamarack for thread, shagbark hickory for fresh cream. Peaches were planted by them in quantity. The first native trees planted by the Colonists were sugar maple, red oak, catalpa, and American elm. Those used for building and furniture were white oak and black walnut. American elms were of early historical significance; one was the "Liberty Tree," under one there was a signing of a peace treaty with the Indians by William Penn, and under one George Washington took command of the Continental Army. The first botanic garden was started by John Bartram near Philadelphia in 1728. The first commercial nursery, the Robert Prince Nursery in Flushing, New York, began in 1737 and existed until 1869 through four generations, included an extensive variety of fruits and ornamentals. The first organized street tree planting program occurred in Philadelphia in 1750. Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, is the oldest park in America. Men of importance regarding trees: Mark Catesby who introduced Nyssa sylvatlca, Asimina, etc.; John and William Bartram who found Franklinia alatamaha; Johnny Appleseed who started extensive apple plantations; Andre Michaux who discovered Cladrastis lutea; Joseph Howland who found Tsuga canadensis pendula; William Hamilton who planted the first fruit tree varieties; Dr. George Hall who first introduced trees directly from the Orient; and Dr. Ernest H. Wilson who explored and introduced plants extensively. There are many cultivars of recent essence including the Merrill magnolia, seedless and fruitless honeylocusts, Bradford pear, etc.
