ANALISIS SEMIOTIKA KOMUNIKASI ROLLAND BARTES DALAM FILM KUCUMBU TUBUH INDAHKU

The film, which was produced in 2018 and written by Garin Nugroho, won an award at the 75th Venice International Film Festival. In Indonesia, this film won 9 awards at film festivals. The existence of this film gets a lot of controversy in Indonesia, because of the LGBT issue. This study uses a communication semiotics approach with the Rolland Barthes method. Qualitative research methods with an interpretive paradigm are the basis for this research. The dominant eastern Javanese cultural value in this film is the cultural tradition of the lengger dancer. Juno as the main character in this film is interested in becoming a lengger dancer which is then opposed by the surrounding community, this is because the main character is a man. The inspiration for this film came from a choreographer who blended the lengger culture in East Java.

“I’m Not Stigmatised, But…”: Stigmatised Topics, Identities, and Succesful Academic Careers

Drawing on theories of stigma and dirty work, we examine topic and work selection as a form of career stigma management, one that interacts in interesting ways with stigmatised individual features and group membership. Utilising a qualitative semi-structured interview methodology (29 interviews), we examine how academic researchers successfully publish on stigmatised, yet valuable, research topics, and how they navigate the potential for negative career consequences for this work. Topic examples include diversity, gender, CSR, and LGBT issues. Interviews highlighted key motivations for studying and publishing on stigmatising yet meaningful research, the challenges associated with doing such work, and finally the career management strategies scholars utilised in building successful academic careers.

FRIENDRAISING: BUILDING RELATIONSHIP IN FUNDRAISING (CASE STUDY PERKUMPULAN SUARA KITA)

This study explains the importance of maintaining good relationships with donors in fundraising for Human service organizations. HSOs depend on fundraising for the survival of the organization and to support the running of their services. HSOs working on LGBT issues face difficulties in raising funds because of the discrimination they face. The case study of Perkumpulan Suara Kita with a qualitative approach illustrates the importance of maintaining good relationships with donors in supporting fundraising. Perkumpulan Suara Kita conducted public fundraising after facing obstacles in raising funds from donor organizations. Friendraising or relationship fundraising is one of the methods used by Perkumpulan Suara Kita in raising funds. Relationship fundraising allows Perkumpulan Suara Kita to raise funds and gain support for their work. The three public fundraising efforts carried out by Perkumpulan Suara Kita are very dependent on the loyalty of their donors; therefore, maintaining good relations with donors is one of the ways carried out by Perkumpulan Suara Kita. The Friendraising methods used by Perkumpulan Suara Kita are: be prompt, be interesting and memorable, be involving, be cheerful and helpful, be sincere and show commitment.

This study aims to discuss the controversial LGBT issue at a time when human rights values ​​became the dominant discourse in democratic countries, including Indonesia. In this context, in Indonesia in particular, there has been a discourse contestation between religious teachings on the one hand and new values ​​that have emerged due to the strengthening of democratic values, especially the value of human rights. Religious teachings that are repressive towards LGBT have become the target of criticism and are considered to hinder the implementation of the basic values ​​possessed by humans, namely freedom. This has strategic value for the religious group itself as well as for its opponents. For religious groups, this rationale can reaffirm their belief in the truth of their religion while for the opponents, this explanation becomes an idea that can be discussed more broadly for consideration of its usefulness in the present.

Medical students' perceptions of their preparedness to care for LGBT patients in Taiwan: Is medical education keeping up with social progress?

Integrating training on health equity of sexual and gender minorities (SGM) in medical education has been challenging globally despite emphasis on the need for medical students to develop competence to provide adequate care for diverse patient groups. This study elicits Taiwanese medical students' perceptions of their values and preparedness to care for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender (LGBT) patients using a qualitative approach that considers broader societal changes, and more focused topics such as the provision of relevant training in medical education. Eighty-nine medical students/trainees from two southern Taiwanese medical schools (one public and one private) participated in focus groups (n = 70) and individual interviews (n = 19). Qualitative analysis was conducted using inductive thematic analysis. Participants (i) expressed wide social acceptance and openness toward LGBT individuals, but were unsure of ways to communicate with LGBT patients; (ii) confirmed that stigmatization and biases might be developed during their training; (iii) recognized gender stereotypes could have negative impacts on clinical reasoning; (iv) considered themselves prepared to care for LGBT patients, yet equated non-discriminatory attitudes to preparedness; (v) acknowledged a lack of relevant professional skills; (vi) implicated curriculum did not address LGBT issues systematically and explicitly. This study has identified the insufficiencies of current medical training and inadequate preparedness of medical students/trainees to provide better care for LGBT patients. It provides insights for medical educators to design and implement effective medical curriculum and training, and faculty development programs to equip medical students/trainees with self-awareness and competencies to more readily provide holistic care for SGM, in keeping up with social progress, and promote health equity for a more diverse patient population.

Formation of Ideological (Official and Religious) Discourses as Basis for Ryacudu’s Securitization of LGBT Acts in Indonesia 2016 – 2017

Despite its existence in various local traditions, LGBT acts in Indonesia has recently faced notorious condemnation and abuse. This paper explores minister Ryacudu’s discourse formation in removing LGBT issue from normal politics into security sector, and whether such action has been successful in convincing audience that LGBT is indeed a security issue. In doing so, this study utilizes securitization framework to unravel the rationalization of removing LGBT into security sector and how it relates to Indonesian identity discourse. This paper argues that securitization of LGBT acts in Indonesia is an enactment of national and religious identity. LGBT has been re-constructed as a threat to national identity, thus, a societal security threat. This securitization is conducted by Indonesian government, initially started by Minister Ryacudu’s call to reject LGBT, which is then widely echoed among citizens. Statement from Ryacudu is the main speech act, supported by, utilization of religious values and national heteronormative identity as reference values to legitimize extraordinary measures to the so-called ‘LGBT problem’. The ‘extraordinary measures’ taken to ‘protect’ Indonesia’s identity include various sectors from education, communication and media, and commerce. Wide acceptance among citizen suggests that Indonesian government, especially Minister Ryacudu have successfully securitized LGBT issue in Indonesia.

Intimate Partner Violence and Openness to Online Counseling Among College Students.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is prevalent and has devastating consequences for college students. Online counseling (OC) may be a way to decrease barriers to help. This study seeks to determine openness to OC compared to face-to-face counseling (F2F) by examining: (1) How openness to OC varies depending on college students’ personal and IPV characteristics and (2) How these characteristics vary compared to college non-IPV survivors. Two linear regressions were conducted using a sample from a cross sectional survey. First with the entire sample of college students (N = 1,518) to examine characteristics of those more open to OC and second with only those that identified as experiencing IPV (n = 1,211). The results demonstrated that IPV survivors are less open to OC than to F2F counseling (b = -.23, p < .01). For the model with all college students, those who were significantly more open to OC were female (b = -.39, p < .001), identified as LGBT (b = .23, p < .05), or Asian/Pacific Islander (API) (b = .26, p < .05), and had a physical health issue (b = -.19, p < .05). For the model that only analyzed IPV survivors, the same characteristics were shown to be significantly related to openness to OC. More research is needed to explore why IPV survivors are less open to OC compared to F2F counseling. Exploring why characteristics of female, LGBT, and physical health issues lead to openness to OC could help understand what barriers need to be addressed for wider use.

Religion, Contact, and LGBT Acceptance: Survey Evidence from South Korea

What factors explain South Korean public opinion on LGBT issues? Via an original survey, we tackle the influence of religion and of knowing a Korean LGBT person on two issues: same-sex marriage and comfort with an LGBT neighbor. We find that of religious identifications studied, only Protestants corresponded with lower support, while knowing a Korean LGBT person strongly correlated with support of both. Moreover, we find that comfort with an LGBT neighbor falls in between acceptance of North Korean and Muslim neighbors.

Disinformation in Poland: Thematic classification based on content analysis of fake news from 2019

The paper presents a qualitative study of fake news on Polish-language internet media that seeks to arrive at their thematic classification in order to identify areas particularly vulnerable to disinformation in Poland. Fake news examples from 2019 were selected using popular Polish fact-checking sites (N = 192) and subjected to textual analysis and coding procedure to establish the thematic categories and specific topics most often encountered in this type of disinformation, with the following thematic categories identified in the process: political and economic; social; gossip/rumour; extreme; pseudo-scientific; worldview; historical; and commercial. The study culminates in a critical interpretation of results and discussion of the phenomenon in its Polish and international contexts. Among discussed conclusions is the dominance of content related to the government, Catholic Church, and LGBT issues in the Polish context, as well as the longevity of health-based fake news, especially anti-vaccination content, that points to the global impact of fake news and calls for action to prevent its spread.

Cherish Lives? Progress and compromise in sexuality education textbooks produced in contemporary China

ABSTRACT This article examines a set of sexuality education textbooks used in a selection of primary schools in Beijing. These textbooks, under the overall name of 珍爱生命 (Cherish Lives), embody a comprehensive sexuality education approach with content designed on the basis of the UNESCO International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education. Using feminist critical discourse analysis, we explore these books from three angles: the challenge of engaging with children as sexual subjects, given adult hegemony around sex; confusion about efforts to break the presentation of gender as a binary; and the contradiction between reproducing the myth of universal heterosexuality and attempting to present an education sensitive to LGBT issues. We show that while these textbooks demonstrate progress in sexuality education, they also manifest compromise. Despite this compromise, the books have recently been withdrawn and it is unclear whether their publication heralds a new, high quality approach to primary school sexuality education or not.

Peran Orang Tua dalam Mencegah Perilaku LGBT di Kalangan Remaja Islam

Abstract&#x0D; Teenagers are very vulnerable to news related to LGBT issues, because teenagers are a period of puberty, with very little knowledge, teenagers will easily deviate. LGBT cases in Indonesia are still very common, including in the Karawang district. Therefore, the role of parents is very important to prevent LGBT behavior. This study aims to describe the role of parents in preventing LGBT behavior among adolescents in Sirnabaya village, Telukjambe Timur sub-district, Karawang district. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach by using data collection techniques in the form of observation, documentation, and interviews. The results of this study indicate that; The role of parents in preventing LGBT behavior among adolescents, namely; (1) Play a role in providing religious education (2) Play a role in providing sex education. This research is recommended to further researchers, so that they can conduct further research with a focus on one of the activities to prevent LGBT behavior.&#x0D; Keywords: Role of Parents, LGBT, Islamic Youth

EXPLORING THE CYC CIS-TEM: A LITERATURE REVIEW OF QUEER AND TRANS TOPICS IN CHILD AND YOUTH CARE

Although Child and Youth Care (CYC) sees itself as a field that embraces diversity and complexity, there is a notable lack of discussion of sexual and gender diversity: queer and trans topics are rarely taken up across CYC research, practice, and pedagogy. Through a systematic literature review of articles published between 2010 and early 2020 in six journals with a focus on CYC practice, research, and theory, this article assesses how queer, trans, Two-Spirit, and nonbinary identities and topics are being discussed in the current CYC literature and reveals a conspicuous absence of publication on these topics. In a 10-year period, across six CYC publications comprising over 4000 published articles, only 36 articles focused on queer and LGBT issues (by covering both sexual and gender diversity) and, of those, only eight articles specifically focused on gender diversity or trans topics. No articles were found within any of the reviewed publications that specifically focused on Two-Spirit identities or topics and only one article mentioned nonbinary identities. Through exploring how and where queer and trans, Two-Spirit, and nonbinary identities and topics are being discussed, this review asks how we as a CYC field might begin to make space for these topics within our field and practice, in order to work towards social change that shifts our field and challenges the cis-heteronormative CYC system.

Marginality and otherness: the discursive construction of LGBT issues/people in the Ghanaian news media

In recent years, LGBT issues have received substantial media attention and engendered heated public debate in Ghana. This paper analyzes the prejudiced construction of LGBT issues in the Ghanaian news media and how this contributes to a discriminatory discourse that demeans LGBT people and puts them at the periphery of Ghanaian society. The study employs a critical discourse analysis framework and a dataset of 385 articles, comprising news reports, op-ed pieces, and editorials. The analysis reveals that news content on LGBT issues is biased and inflammatory, and it frames LGBT people as expendables and undesirables. This is realized by exploiting three discourses, or forms of othering, that culminate into the (re)production and naturalization of moral panic: a discourse of amorality/immorality and societal destruction, a discourse of alienization, and a discourse of medicalization or pathologization. The paper concludes with a call for a more balanced and ethically/socially responsible news reporting, especially since LGBT issues in Ghana hold implications for national cohesion and security.

Student Intervention Against Homophobic Name-Calling: The Role of Peers, Teachers, and Inclusive Curricula.

Encouraging bystander intervention is an effective strategy to prevent episodes of bullying victimization at school. Yet there remains a paucity of evidence on this behavior in situations of homophobic name-calling, a form of peer victimization aimed at mocking individuals based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation. The existing research has focused on intentionality rather than actual student intervention behaviors, and, of note, no previous studies have taken into consideration contextual factors at the classroom and school levels. The present study examined whether students' observations of teacher and peer interventions against homophobic name-calling and perceptions of the representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues in class are associated with student intervention behaviors against homophobic name-calling. A three-level multilevel approach was used to account for the nested nature of students' experiences in classrooms and schools. The sample included 1,296 students (43.57% girls) recruited from 84 classrooms of 22 Italian public high schools. Preliminary analyses showed that the variability in students' reports had more to do with which classrooms versus which schools students attend. Results from multilevel regressions indicated that students who observe teachers intervening during episodes of homophobic name-calling, and who perceive the representation of LGBT issues in class as positive, were more likely to intervene against homophobic name-calling and to observe other classmates intervene as well. Also, participants who observed other students intervening were more likely to intervene. These findings highlight the importance of the role of teachers in modeling classroom norms to encourage bystander interventions. Teachers can do so indirectly such as when providing a positive representation of LGBT issues in class, or directly when intervening to condemn episodes of homophobic name-calling. In addition, our results affirm the importance of peer influence in encouraging bystander interventions during episodes of homophobic name-calling.

FRAMEWORKING THE ISSUES OF LESBIAN GAY BISEXUAL TRANSGENDER (LGBT) AT MAGDALENE.CO (KALIBATA CITY ARTICLE: BETWEEN MUTILATION AND “SANCTUARY”)

The raid on an LGBT party in August 2020 and then in Kuningan, South Jakarta became the main spotlight amid the hustle and bustle of the Covid-19 pandemic. The media coverage of the case was quite controversial. Because several media discriminate against LGBT people. However, Magdalene. co does not see LGBT people as oppressed and need to be heard. This paper analyzes how Magdalene framed LGBT issues in one of her articles entitled “Kalibata City: Between Mutilation and 'Sanctuary'” through Robert N Entman's framing analysis approach to explaining how alternative media portrays sensitive issues such as LGBT in their writings. By using Robert N. Entman's framing analysis with the Define Problems, Diagnose Causes, Make Moral Judgment, and Treatment Recommendation methods, this study is expected to identify and analyze the framing of LGBT issues in the article. The result of this research is that the alternative media Magdalene. co framed LGBT people as oppressed and received unfair treatment so they need to be heard. On the aspect of defining the problem, Magdalene. co explained that LGBT people get discriminated against by the community. Diagnosing causes explain the cause of the discriminatory attitude because LGBT people are troubling citizens, and not following the norms that apply in society. In the aspect of making a moral judgment, Magdalene. co emphasizes that LGBT is negatively stigmatized by society and the aspect of treatment recommendation emphasizes that this problem will always exist.

SPOTLIGHT ON LGBT IN MALAYSIAN ONLINE NEWSPAPERS: INSIGHTS FROM TEXTUAL ANALYTICS

ABSTRACT The study examined aspects that were spotlighted in news articles on LGBT in Malaysian online newspapers using textual analytic approach. The specific objectives of the study were to (1) determine the aspects of LGBT highlighted in news articles based on the frequency of top ranked words; and (2) analyse the positive and negative coverage of LGBT in the four online newspapers. The Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) software was used to extract high frequency content words in four online newspapers (The Star Online, Free Malaysia Today, MalaysiaKini, and Astro Awani Online). The analysis revealed controversy surrounding LGBT. The aspects of LGBT highlighted in news articles were largely negativity and non-permissiveness towards LGBT, the association of LGBT with Malay and Muslim, and the quotation of government and ministerial sources to comment on LGBT. The prominence of government-linked sources drowned out the voice of activists and advocates of LGBT rights. The textual analytic software analysis also revealed that Astro Awani was markedly different from the other three newspapers in its event-focused reporting on LGBT, mainly because it is a news portal affiliated to a television channel. Astro Awani’s news articles on LGBT were mostly negative, but the other three newspapers attempted to balance positive and negative coverage on LGBT. The study showed that data mining of news articles using textual analytic software can reveal salient aspects of the LGBT issue that is given attention by the newspapers, and may indicate how media shapes readers’ attitudes towards LGBT.

Finding the “Humanity” in Human Rights: LGBT Activists and the Vernacularization of Human Rights in Hong Kong

Through an ethnographic analysis of Hong Kong LGBT activists’ fight for a gender recognition ordinance (GRO) that would simplify the process for transgender Hongkongers to change their legal gender, a paradox emerged: Why was a human rights framing of LGBT issues problematic when human rights were central to locals’ understanding of what it meant to be Hongkongers? Local LGBT activists’ vernacularization of human rights—or the process of localization of international human rights law into culturally relevant frameworks—hinged on reframing the need for a GRO as a matter of humanity, not human rights law. Relying on citations of human rights law among “ordinary citizens” violated the existing ways in which Hongkongers talked about human rights as a method of distinguishing Hong Kong from the rest of the People’s Republic of China. Furthermore, this need to differentiate emerged from the 2014 Umbrella Movement in which prodemocracy activists occupied various urban centers in Hong Kong for seventy-nine days. The Umbrella Movement caused a shift in which ordinary citizens became responsible for each other and defending what made Hong Kong unique. Ultimately, the vernacularization process requires closer attention to the ways in which human rights are being talked about on the ground.

Piet Go, Ensiklik Rerum Novarum dan Quadragesimo Anno dan Transformasi Moral Millenial

This research discusses about moral problems that are occuring daily in the society and the Church as pointed out by Piet Go Twan An. Those moral problems are the problems created by firstly the Indonesian Marriage Law; secondly the problem of pastoral care among the priests should be reformed to suit inter-personal relations with God’s people so that the Church’s missions are recived affectively and efficiently; thirdly the problem of corruption in the government and the needs for the Church to be pro-active in eradicating corruptions; and the last point is the problem of homosexuality or LGBT issues. Solution is offered by moral transforming among its people (the faithful and the people) namely personal ethic transformation based on the Papal Encyclic Rerum Novarum and Quadragesimo Anno. This research is to address the question of how much personal moral transformation is needed to overcome moral problems in the society. The samples of this research are 895 people of Christians and Cahtolics in Medan. By using the Analysis Factor and SEM methods, it is predicted that there will be an increase of 0.08 on the transformation of personal morals if there is an effort of 0.28 points to improve the morals of the faithful and the people of Medan.

The position of the polish bishops’ conference on LGBT+ – philosophical, theological, clinical and political aspects

IntroductionPracticing medicine cannot disregard cultural conditions. Philosophy and religion are elements of culture. For several years in Poland, various circles have discussed the extensive LGBT issues. A document of Polish Bishops on this subject appeared on 28.08.2020. In 2018, 91.8% of people over 16 years old in Poland declared affiliation to the Roman Catholic Church (Statistics Poland 2020).ObjectivesThe aim of the study is to present different perspectives of effects of that publication, including ethical evaluation and references to clinical practice.MethodsStatements of protagonists and antagonists of this document in Polish were analyzed. Collected arguments were divided into types: philosophical – by philosophy branches (e.g. ethics, philosophical anthropology), theological and clinical.ResultsAs of 29.09.2020 – 85,200 results in the Google Search after typing (in Polish) “Polish Episcopal Conference LGBT”. The use of philosophical arguments by both parties results from the adaptation of different systems, e.g. regarding philosophical anthropology, some assume the immutability of human nature, others – its variability and susceptibility to shaping, e.g. human sexuality. Some emphasize the importance of non-discrimination, while others indicate the need to consider human essence in determining directions of actions.ConclusionsProfessionals should help everyone, regardless of conditions, in accordance with conscience and contemporary medical knowledge [Polish Code of Medical Ethics]. They should try to understand patients and the context of symptoms. Familiarizing oneself with arguments of both sides helps in this. But polemical language makes dialogue difficult. What for one is a “venerable tradition”, for another is a “stereotype” or “discrimination”.

Ideology and Media Framing: Stigmatisation of LGBT in Media Coverage in Indonesia

This essay analyzes how the ideology that is owned by the media influences the media's framing in reporting a reality. The framing dimension will always be related to the selection of issues, emphases, and projection on certain aspects of the issue. For this reason, this study will present the media cases of Republika.co.id and Tempo.co in informing LGBT reality. So, the reality of LGBT conveyed by Republika.co.id and Tempo.co cannot be seen separately, because it will be related to the interests that these two media outlets want to serve by reporting the reality. The analysis demonstrates that the reporting of Republika.co.id and Tempo.co on LGBT is influenced by each outlet's ideology. Republika.co.id, which embraces the ideology of nationalism and Islam, tends to report the rejection of LGBT presence in Indonesia. Republika.co.id provides a negative stigma against LGBT issues. It is considered that LGBT is a serious threat to the nation and state because behaviour is deemed not following religion, generally applicable social norms, and the laws of Indonesia. Tempo.co does not see LGBT as a serious problem for the Indonesian people. Tempo.co considers the behaviour and activities of LGBT people to be normal, which is part of human rights that must be respected by the Indonesian people.
