Oncologists' Locus of Control, Compassion Fatigue, Compassion Satisfaction, and the Mediating Role of Helplessness.

The oncology setting may give rise to significant feelings of helplessness among oncologists via patients’ inevitable deaths or suffering. The current study examines whether and how oncologists’ sense of control (locus of control; LOC) influences their compassion fatigue and satisfaction. Methods: Seventy-three oncologists completed the following questionnaires: the Professional Quality of Life scale; Levenson’s Internal, Powerful Others, and Chance scale; the Guilt Inventory, State Guilt subscale; and the Learned Helplessness scale. Results: Oncologists reported high levels of secondary traumatic stress and burnout and moderate levels of compassion satisfaction. A positive association between oncologists’ external LOC and compassion fatigue, and a negative association between oncologists’ internal LOC and compassion fatigue, were found. Helplessness, but not guilt, had a mediating role in these associations. Internal LOC was also positively associated with compassion satisfaction. Conclusions: The current study highlights oncologists as a population at risk of experiencing compassion fatigue and emphasizes oncologists’ locus of control as a predisposition that plays a role in the development of this phenomenon. Additionally, the cognitive as well as the emotional aspects of control were found to be important factors associated with compassion fatigue.

Moral distress in genetic counseling: A study of North American genetic counselors.

Moral distress is the phenomenon whereby healthcare providers experience the inability to take action or act in morally appropriate ways when encountering a morally compromising situation. The correlation of moral distress to burnout and resignation in nursing and other healthcare fields has led to increasing attention and concern among healthcare professionals to identify the sources of moral distress, as well as find ways to alleviate it. An online mix-method survey was sent to NSGC members to gain information on (1) sources of moral distress, (2) emotions involved, (3) coping strategies, and (4) suggestions to alleviate it. The ProQOL 5 scale was included to measure genetic counselor compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. Two hundred and thirteen genetic counselors from North America completed the survey. Forty-eight percent of respondents experienced moral distress and five sources were identified. The sources were situations involving other providers, family members, professional responsibility, personal beliefs, and access. Those more likely to experience moral distress worked in a prenatal setting, were over the age of 50, and worked for more than 21years. Genetic counselors were more likely to talk to a co-worker for support, and seek social support, address the source of the problem, and sustain self through working with patients as coping strategies. Most genetic counselors recommended talking to another genetic counselor to alleviate moral distress. Moral distress did not correlate with genetic counselor burnout, but did correlate with higher levels of secondary traumatic stress (p<0.01). Thirty-two percent of genetic counselors considered leaving their specialty, and 23% considered leaving their profession based on their experience(s) with moral distress. Our study establishes the existence of moral distress in the genetic counseling field and supports the need for coping strategies and recommendations in order to alleviate future genetic counselor moral distress.

The impact of the alterations in caring for COVID-19 patients on Compassion Satisfaction and Compassion Fatigue in Italian nurses: a multi method study.

Background and aim of the work:During COVID-19 first wave, healthcare professionals were exposed to a major psychological pressure related to uncertainty, a lack of therapies or a vaccine and shortages of healthcare resources. They developed higher levels of Burnout and Compassion Fatigue, and similar levels of Compassion Satisfaction. Aim is evaluating in Italian nurses Compassion Satisfaction and Compassion Fatigue and impacting individual and relational variables.Methods:A multi-methods approach was used. Qualitative data were collected through 2 focus group. Quantitative data were collected through a web survey composed by an ad hoc questionnaire developed from the focus group results, the Professional Quality of Life Scale-5 and the Resilience Scale .Results:In the qualitative phase 6 categories emerged. From the quantitative analysis the sample reported a moderate level of Compassion Satisfaction, a low level of Burnout and a moderate level of Secondary Traumatic Stress. Compassion Satisfaction had as predictors resilience (β = .501), followed by feeling part of the team (β = .406) and collaboration with colleagues (β = .386). Secondary Traumatic Stress had as predictors the impact of PPE (β = .269), and feeling Covid-related individual sufferance (β = .212). The only predictor of Burnout was resilience (β = -2195).Conclusions:During COVID-19 first wave Italian nurses were exposed to a higher risk of Secondary Traumatic Stress, mainly impacted by frustration, loss of control, loss of possibility to properly care for patients, and personal threat. Professional Quality of Life Among Nurses: Compassion Satisfaction, Burnout, and Secondary Traumatic Stress: A Multisite Study.

IntroductionIncreased stressors and decreased job satisfaction are major challenges in nursing. Important factors of better professional quality of life include compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. It is critical to assess these factors to help improve nurses’ clinical practices.ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between the three factors and associated factors.MethodsA cross-sectional, multisite study was conducted on a convenience sample of 464 nurses working at three public hospitals in Saudi Arabia. The Professional Quality of Life Version 5 was used to collect data. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were run using SPSS.ResultsScores were slightly moderate on the compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress levels. Compassion satisfaction was statistically significantly and negatively associated with burnout. A statistically significant relationship was reported between compassion satisfaction and secondary traumatic stress. Further, there was a statistically significant association between burnout and secondary traumatic stress. In regression, only the secondary traumatic stress model was statistically significant.ConclusionsNurse managers should use highly standard guidelines to reduce secondary traumatic stress levels. Further actions addressing potential issues for improving compassion satisfaction and reducing burnout levels among nurses are also recommended.

Stress Coping Strategies, Burnout, Secondary Traumatic Stress, and Compassion Satisfaction Amongst Israeli Dentists: A Cross-sectional Study

ObjectiveBeing a member of the dental profession is often associated with stress and high levels of burnout. Stress coping strategies may significantly help mediate burnout. The present cross-sectional study sought to examine the role of stress coping strategies on burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction amongst Israeli dentists.MethodsThe study was carried out amongst Israeli dentists with the use of the following questionnaires: (1) the Professional Quality of Life Scale 5 (ProQOL), referring to burnout, compassion satisfaction, and level of secondary traumatic stress; (2) the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations–Situation Specific Coping Inventory (CISS-SSC), referring to coping strategies (task-focused, emotion-focused, or avoidance-focused coping); and (3) demographic and professional variables (eg, specialisation, workload). Participants included 243 Israeli dentists. Univariate analyses and linear regressions were conducted to evaluate the relationships amongst coping strategies and burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction.ResultsFemale dentists had higher emotion-focused and avoidance coping scores than male dentists. Burnout could be explained by higher emotion-focused coping scores and lower task-focused and avoidance-focused coping. Secondary traumatic stress could be explained by higher emotion-focused scores, having fewer years of professional experience, and younger ages. Compassion satisfaction could be explained by lower emotion-focused coping as well as by higher task-focused coping and workload scores, specialisation, and gender.ConclusionsThe findings suggest that emotional coping may cause dentists to be vulnerable to burnout and to secondary traumatic stress.

The Role of Children's PTSD Symptomatology in Non-Offending Caregivers' Secondary Traumatic Stress Symptomatology Following Disclosures of Sexual or Physical Abuse.

This research examined factors influencing levels of secondary traumatic stress (STS) in non-offending caregivers (NOCs) of children with histories of sexual or physical abuse. These factors included the nature of the abuse, NOCs' relationships with the initiators of the abuse, children's ages and genders, NOCs' trauma histories, and the elapsed time between children's disclosures of abuse and their trauma assessments. As a secondary objective, this research examined the interactions between children's self-reports of their own posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology, NOCs' estimates of their children's PTSD symptomatology, and NOCs' self-reports of their own STS symptomatology. Participants from a clinical sample (N = 300, children = 150, NOCs = 150; child age M = 9.89, SD = 4.08; NOC age M = 37.87, SD = 9.23) completed structured intake interviews, the PTSD Checklist for the DSM-5 (PCL-5) and the Child PTSD Symptom Scale (CPSS; Child-Report and NOC-Report). Analytic strategies included point-biserial correlation coefficient calculations, linear regression analyses, and Analyses of Covariance (ANCOVAs). NOCs' levels of STS were impacted by their relationships with the initiators of the abuse and their own trauma histories. NOCs' self-reported STS symptomatology mirrored their estimates of their children's PTSD symptomatology. The discrepancy scores between children's self-reports of their PTSD symptomatology and NOCs' estimates of children's PTSD symptomatology were impacted by children's ages and genders. Clinical practitioners should note the importance of examining children's PTSD symptomatology and NOCs' STS symptomatology concurrently when making recommendations for trauma-informed evidence-based treatments.

Prevalence and severity of secondary traumatic stress and optimism in Indian health care professionals during COVID-19 lockdown.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the lacunae in the preparedness of healthcare systems across the globe. This preparedness also includes the safety of healthcare providers (HCPs) at various levels. Sudden spread of COVID-19 infection has created threatening and vulnerable conditions for the HCPs. The current pandemic situation has not only affected physical health of HCPs but also their mental health. This study aims to understand the prevalence and severity of secondary traumatic stress, optimism parameters, along with states of mood experienced by the HCPs, viz., doctors, nurses and allied healthcare professionals (including Physiotherapist, Lab technicians, Phlebotomist, dieticians, administrative staff and clinical pharmacist), during the COVID-19 lockdown in India. The assessment of level of secondary traumatic stress (STS), optimism/pessimism (via Life Orientation Test-Revised) and current mood states experienced by Indian HCPs in the present COVID-19 pandemic situation was done using a primary data of 2,008 HCPs from India during the first lockdown during April-May 2020. Data was collected through snow-ball sampling technique, reaching out to various medical health care professionals through social media platforms. Amongst the study sample 88.2% of doctors, 79.2 of nurses and 58.6% of allied HCPs were found to have STS in varying severity. There was a female preponderance in the category of Severe STS. Higher optimism on the LOTR scale was observed among doctors at 39.3% followed by nurses at 26.7% and allied health care professionals 22.8%. The mood visual analogue scale which measures the "mood" during the survey indicated moderate mood states without any gender bias in the study sample. The current investigation sheds light on the magnitude of the STSS experienced by the HCPs in the Indian Subcontinent during the pandemic. This hitherto undiagnosed and unaddressed issue, calls for a dire need of creating better and accessible mental health programmes and facilities for the health care providers in India.

The Effectiveness of Self-Induced Unclassified Therapeutic Tremor for Decreasing Secondary Traumatic Stress among Social Workers

Secondary traumatic stress symptoms are marked by the emergence of traumatic memories experienced by otherpeople, rejection of the stimulus that triggers traumatic memories, and emotional turmoil. If left untreated, it maylower the quality of service and health of social workers. To lower secondary traumatic stress symptoms, it isnecessary to deliver psychological treatment that can be easily and independently done, is effective and cost-efficient, and universal. As such, Therapeutic Tremor Exercises through Self-Induction are consideredappropriate to respond to this need. This study aims to identify the effect of self-induced unclassified therapeutictremor exercises on reducing secondary traumatic stress levels. This study hypothesizes that there will bedifferences in secondary traumatic stress levels among social workers before and after samples are given self-induced therapeutic tremor exercises. Subjects consisted of female social workers (n = 5) who were indirectlyexposed to traumatic stories of victims for at least 2 hours a week. The study used a single-group pre-post designby comparing secondary trauma stress levels before and after the intervention. The intervention was a one-dayjoint training and 14-day independent training. Wilcoxon’s signed-rank test showed significant differences withZ = -2.023, p = .043, whereby secondary trauma stress levels prior to the intervention (M = 45.4) was higher thanafter the intervention (M = 26.2).

Secondary traumatic stress, burnout, compassion satisfaction, and perceived organizational trauma readiness in forensic science professionals.

Secondary traumatic stress, burnout, and compassion satisfaction have been described since the 1980s and extensively studied in first responders, law enforcement, legal professionals, and human service providers. There are few studies in forensic science professionals. To determine levels of secondary traumatic stress, burnout, and compassion satisfaction and relate these to demographics and job characteristics, we administered online a modified version of the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) questionnaire to professionals in crime laboratories and medical examiner offices. Participants also completed a modified version of the Vicarious Trauma-Organizational Readiness Guide (VT-ORG) to measure perceptions of their organizations' efforts to address vicarious trauma and promote health and wellness. Results from 419 subjects indicated that field-based forensic science professionals registered higher levels of secondary traumatic stress compared to laboratory-based professionals, but burnout and compassion satisfaction were not significantly different between these groups. Demographic variables did not predict any of these outcome measures, but work with victims' families and testifying significantly, albeit weakly, predicted higher secondary traumatic stress. Greater employee belief that their organizations were addressing issues of stress and trauma predicted lower levels of secondary traumatic stress and burnout and higher levels of compassion satisfaction. Write-in responses by participants paralleled the quantitative findings. These results indicate a need to strengthen organizational efforts to address stress and trauma and promote health and wellness, particularly in professionals with direct field-based exposure to crime scenes, contact with victims' families, and responsibility for testifying.

Hospital ethical climate associated with the professional quality of life among nurses during the early stage of COVID-19 pandemic in Wuhan, China: A cross-sectional study

ObjectivesTo describe the professional quality of life and explore its associated factors among nurses coming from other areas of China to assist with the anti-epidemic fight in Wuhan and especially examine whether the hospital ethical climate was independently associated with nurses’ professional quality of life. MethodsA cross-sectional online survey was conducted from March 2020 to April 2020. The nurses working in Wuhan from the other parts of China were the target population. The Professional Quality of Life Scale version 5, the Hospital Ethical Climate Survey, and a basic information sheet were used to collect data. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. ResultsIn total, 236 nurses participated in this study, and 219 valid questionnaires were analyzed. The average age of the participants was 31.2 ± 5.0 years. Most nurses were female (176/219; 80.4%) and married (145/219; 66.2%). In term of professional quality of life, nurses reported moderate (129/219; 58.9%) to high (90/219; 41.1%) levels of compassion satisfaction, low (119/219; 54.3%) to moderate (100/219; 45.7%) levels of burnout, and low (67/219; 36.0%) to high (10/219; 4.6%) levels of secondary traumatic stress. Regarding hospital ethical climate, nurses reported moderately high hospital ethical climates with an average score of 4.46. After controlling for socio-demographic characteristics, the multiple linear regression models showed that the hospital ethical climate subscale of “relationship with physicians” was independently associated with the compassion satisfaction (β = 0.533, P < 0.01) and burnout (β = −0.237, P < 0.05); the hospital ethical climate subscale of “relationship with peers” (β = −0.191, P < 0.01) was independently associated with the secondary traumatic stress. ConclusionsDuring the early stage of the pandemic, nurses demonstrated moderate to high level of compassion satisfaction, low to moderate level of burnout, and all nurses experienced secondary traumatic stress. Nurses perceived a high level of hospital ethical climate, and the perceived hospital ethical climate played an important role in promoting nurses’ professional quality of life during a life-threatening infectious disease pandemic.

Generational conflict, alcohol use and brotherhood: an exploratory survey of a rural career fire department in the Midwest

PurposeThe purpose of this article was to identify factors impacting burnout, resilience and quality of life in rural career firefighters. In addition, sources of stress and the impact of generational differences were explored.Design/methodology/approachAn exploratory cross-sectional survey was conducted at a rural career fire department.FindingsThe findings of the project indicate that the firefighters had high levels of compassion satisfaction (CS) and relatively low levels of secondary traumatic stress and burnout; displayed moderate to high psychological resilience and the majority felt moderate to high organizational support, but there was a noticeable minority who did not feel supported by the department. Findings indicate that organizational support is significantly related to both burnout and resilience. The majority of the men (88.3%) reported moderate to high risk for alcohol-related problems and over three-quarters (78.6%) reported binge drinking behavior in the past year. Qualitative findings highlight generational differences and chain of command challenges as primary stressors.Originality/valueThis is a unique study in that it focuses on a rural career department. What was found were issues similar to those facing urban career fire departments.

Indirect exposure to trauma: Does resilience explain the link between optimism and secondary traumatic stress among in-patient carers?

This study examined the relationship between optimism and secondary traumatic stress (STS), including the mediating role of resilience on the association. Family carers (n = 194; female = 64.95%; married = 50%; age range = 15 to 70, mean age = 31.5 years, SD = 8.9 years) of in-patients in a Nigerian orthopaedic hospital participated in the study. The participants completed measures of secondary traumatic stress, resilience, and optimism. Path analyses results showed lower levels of secondary traumatic stress, with high optimism and resilience mediating the relationship between optimism and secondary traumatic stress, while lowering the risk for secondary traumatic stress. Resilience mediated the relationship between optimism and secondary traumatic stress, lowering the risk for secondary traumatic stress. Psychological interventions that target optimism and resilience of informal caregivers during in-patient care in hospital settings could reduce their risk for secondary traumatic stress with exposure to indirect trauma.

Secondary traumatic stress in nurses working with patients with suspected/confirmed COVID-19 in Turkey.

This study aimed to determine the level of secondary traumatic stress in nurses (n = 205) working with patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 in Turkey. Data were collected using the personal information form and Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale. Of the total sample, 62% were femaleand 52% of nurses were in the 20- to 30-years age range. 67.8% of the nurses experienced high and severe secondary traumatic stress symptoms, the mean score was 49.66 ± 0.86. At the level of secondary traumatic stress subscales, the highest average score was avoidance symptom (20.09 ± 5.06). More than half of the nurses experienced high and severe secondary traumatic stress where the highest symptom "avoidance."The nurses may need psychosocial support during and after the pandemic.

Prevalence and predictors for compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction in nursing students during clinical placement

BackgroundCompassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction affect clients' care satisfaction and nurses’ well-being. However, little attention is paid to compassion fatigue and satisfaction in nursing students during clinical placement. ObjectivesTo explore the relationships between social support, empathy, resilience, coping strategies, and compassion fatigue and satisfaction in nursing students during clinical placement in China. DesignA cross-sectional study was performed from May 1 to May 31, 2020. Settingsand participants: A total of 972 nursing students from 15 universities or colleges in Sichuan province, who received clinical training for at least 10 months were investigated. MethodsThe instruments included Perceived Social Support Scale, Jefferson Scale of Empathy, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Simple Coping Style Questionnaire and Professional Quality of Life Scale. Descriptive, correlation and regression analyses of these variables were conducted. ResultsThe prevalence of low, moderate and high risk of burnout were 1.3%, 97.8% and 0.9%, respectively. The prevalence of low, average and high levels of secondary traumatic stress were 43.6%, 55.3% and 1.1%. Moreover, 9 (0.9%), 316 (32.5%) and 647 (66.6%) respondents reported low, moderate and high levels of compassion satisfaction. Cognitive empathy and resilience were significant protectors from compassion fatigue, and significant contributors to compassion satisfaction. Less compassionate care and more passive coping were significant risk factors for compassion fatigue. Adaptive coping predicted burnout significantly and negatively, and predicted compassion satisfaction significantly and positively. Family support was a significant contributor to compassion satisfaction. ConclusionIt is essential to develop strategies to increase empathy and resilience, avoid passive coping and enhance adaptive coping, and improve family support in order to reduce compassion fatigue and facilitate compassion satisfaction in nursing students during clinical clerkship.

Coping Mechanism and Professional Quality of Life in Northeast Texas Ems Personnel during the Covid-19 Pandemic: An Exploratory Study

Introduction The purpose of this study was to conduct an exploratory evaluation of employee professional quality of life and factors associated with it at an emergency medical service (EMS) agency in northeast Texas in the United States. Initially, we intended to evaluate typical day-to-day factors, however we ended up capturing these factors during the unique environment of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods We conducted an exploratory cross-sectional survey at an EMS agency in northeast Texas in November 2020. Surveys were web-based and anonymous. They included the ProQOL 5, the Survey of Perceived Organizational Support, the Brief Resilience Survey, the RAND Social Support Survey Instrument, the Kessler-6, the Workplace Incivility Scale-Revised, the General Self-Efficacy Scale and the Brief Cope Scale. Results The survey had a response rate of 19% (38 participants). Findings suggest a positive relationship between utilising religion as a coping mechanism and higher compassion satisfaction. There was also a relationship associated between increased perceived organisational support leading to an increase in compassion satisfaction. The most significant predictors of burnout were two different coping mechanisms. Those who relied more heavily on behavioral disengagement and those who employed humour as a coping mechanism displayed average increased levels of burnout. Finally, those who experienced workplace incivility and those who relied on self-blame as a coping mechanism experienced on average higher levels of secondary traumatic stress. Conclusion This study adds to the limited literature examining coping mechanisms, stress and burnout in EMS personnel. It is also unique for examining how EMS personnel are coping with stress during a prolonged pandemic.

Secondary traumatic stress and vicarious post-traumatic growth among social workers who have worked with abused children

SummaryWorking with abused children can have positive and negative implications for social workers. Some of these implications have been conceptualized as secondary traumatic stress and vicarious post-traumatic growth. The current study examined the question of whether these two phenomena share similar contributing factors. Based on the social-ecological theory and previous studies on secondary traumatic stress, we examined the contribution of personal factors and level of exposure to trauma (i.e. years of work experience, professional exposure to child abuse, mastery) and environmental factors (i.e. social support, supervision, and role stress) to the explained variance of secondary traumatic stress and post-traumatic growth, with the goal of understanding these two potential outcomes. This cross-sectional study comprised 255 social workers who worked with abused children.FindingsThe results showed that despite the correlation between the two outcomes—post-traumatic growth and secondary traumatic stress—they shared only one common predictive factor: the extent of social workers’ exposure to abused children. Role stress was correlated positively, and mastery was correlated negatively, with secondary traumatic stress only. Years of work experience was correlated positively with post-traumatic growth only.ApplicationsThe current study shows the importance of continuing efforts to identify the factors that contribute to post-traumatic growth. At the same time, efforts should be made to foster certain personal and environmental factors to reduce secondary traumatic stress levels.

Secondary traumatic stress, vicarious posttraumatic growth and their association in emergency room physicians and nurses

ABSTRACT Background: Emergency room personnel are indirectly exposed to many traumas. Few studies have examined secondary traumatic stress in emergency room nurses and only a single study examined emergency room physicians. The extent of vicarious post-traumatic growth, i.e., the growth associated with such trauma, has also hitherto not been examined in emergency room personnel. Objective: Our first goal was to examine secondary traumatization in both emergency room nurses and physicians. Our second goal was to examine vicarious post-traumatic growth in emergency room personnel. Finally, we also address the association (linear and curvilinear) between secondary traumatization and vicarious traumatic growth. Methods: A questionnaire comprising demographic variables, secondary traumatic stress and vicarious post-traumatic growth was administered electronically to a sample of emergency room personnel from the Wolfson Hospital, Holon, Israel. Results: There were no differences between nurses and physicians in overall secondary trauma or vicarious post-traumatic growth levels. For physicians, there was both a linear and a curvilinear association between secondary trauma and vicarious post-traumatic growth; for nurses, there was no overall association. Further sub-group analyses revealed that emergency room nurses with low workload, in conjunction with low work experience, did show a linear association. Conclusion: Results indicate that while vicarious post-traumatic growth is linked to secondary traumatic stress for emergency room physicians, it is not so for nurses. Theoretical implications concerning the role of trauma symptoms in vicarious post-traumatic growth are discussed. Clinical implications are raised regarding the identification of excessive secondary traumatic stress levels and the need for interventions to both decrease stress levels, and to increase vicarious post-traumatic growth levels.

Displaced Syrian Mental Health Workers: An Investigation of Professional Quality of Life

AbstractThis study investigates levels of secondary traumatic stress, burnout, and compassion satisfaction in Syrian mental health workers (MHWs) in a low-resource post-conflict environment. Sixty-one Syrian MHWs completed a cross-sectional questionnaire, in Arabic, incorporating the professional quality of life (ProQOL) scale. Our Arabic-translated ProQOL scale showed acceptable internal consistency estimates of reliability for all subscales. Relative to population norms and other samples of MHWs, the Syrian MHWs showed similar levels of burnout and higher levels of secondary traumatic stress and compassion satisfaction. Those with no psychology-related educational background showed significantly higher secondary traumatic stress and burnout scores and significantly lower compassion satisfaction scores relative to those with a relevant educational background. Our findings indicate acceptable levels of ProQOL in Syrian MHWs, with the exception of those with no educational background in psychology. Training Syrian MHWs, with an emphasis on increasing the availability of educational training and adequate supervision and support, provides a sustainable solution to the provision of culturally and language-specific care in low-resource conflict settings.

Stressors, Job Resources, Fear of Contagion, and Secondary Traumatic Stress Among Nursing Home Workers in Face of the COVID-19: The Case of Spain.

This study aimed to analyze the psychological consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on nursing home workers, as well as the influence of certain related stressors and job resources. Two-hundred twenty-eight nursing home workers in Spain participated in this cross-sectional study. High levels of workload, social pressure from work, contact with suffering, and fear of contagion were found. In nursing homes where cases of COVID-19 had been detected, workers experienced higher levels of secondary traumatic stress. Social pressure from work, high doses of exposure to suffering, lack of personnel and personal protective equipment, and minimal supervisor support were significant in explaining traumatic stress. Supervisor and coworker support moderated some of these relationships. The results are discussed in terms of the need to implement urgent psychosocial protection strategies and to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to help prevent future psychological disorders in this worker population.

Professional Quality of Life: Frontline and Non-frontline Workers of Sukraraj Tropical and Infections Disease Hospital

During the coronavirus pandemic health care workers are one of the most at risk of infection and work-related stress, which can have negative impact on their professional quality of life. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Sukraraj Tropical and Infections Disease Hospital where professional quality of life was examined among 89 healthcare providers. This study showed high level of compassion satisfaction, low level of burnout, moderate level of secondary traumatic stress. When using Mann-Whitney U-test, significant difference between frontline (Median=20) and non-frontline (Median=17) workers regarding burnout (p &lt; 0.05) was observed, no significant difference was observed among frontline (Median=43) and non-frontline (Median=47) workers regarding compassion satisfaction, and secondary traumatic stress frontline workers (Median=26) and non-frontline workers (Median=23). This study showed that the frontline workers and non-frontline workers were dealing well with the pandemic situation. However, as the pandemic continues further with increasing cases, increase in burnout and secondary stress, along with decrease in compassion satisfaction is probable. As such, timely preventive psychological intervention would be beneficial for overall professional quality of life of healthcare workers.
