Global Gridded Emission Inventory of Organophosphate Flame Retardants from 2010 to 2020.

As a substitute for brominated flame retardants, organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) have become a global concern due to their high toxicity and bioaccumulation. To paint an overall picture of OPFRs in the global environment, the present study develops a gridded global emission inventory of OPFRs on a spatial resolution of 1 × 1° from 2010 to 2020. Revealing a 3.31% average annual increase in emissions, totaling 21,324.42 tons. The production process is the primary source, accounting for 55.43% of emissions, with consumption processes making up the rest. Major sources are in Asia, North America, and Europe. The inventory is verified by implementing emission data into a global atmospheric transport model to predict OPFR concentrations in the global environment and comparing modeled concentrations with field sampled data. The results indicate that the inventory is reliable except for the pristine polar region, where the emission inventory and modeled concentrations underestimate OPFR levels in the atmosphere, likely resulting from ignorance of chemical reactions and the secondary derivative of parent OPFRs during their global long-distance atmospheric transport in the model. This comprehensive data set aids in formulating OPFR emission control policies and assessing health risks.

Dust dynamics: distribution patterns of semi-volatile organic chemicals across particle sizes in varied indoor microenvironments.

An extensive analysis of the distribution patterns of three distinct classes of semi-volatile organic chemicals (SVOCs)-phthalates (PAEs), organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-across four distinct size fractions of dust (25, 50, 100, and 200μm) was conducted. The dust samples were sourced from AC filter, covered car parking lots, households, hotels, mosques, and car floors. To generate the four fractions, ten dust samples from each microenvironment were pooled and sieved utilizing sieving apparatus with the appropriate mesh size. Selected SVOCs were quantified utilizing gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in electron impact (EI) mode. Results unveiled diverse contamination levels among dust fractions, showcasing car parking lot dust with the lowest chemical contamination, while car floor dust displayed the highest levels of PAHs and OPFRs, peaking at 28.3µg/g and 43.2µg/g, respectively. In contrast, mosque and household floor dust exhibited the highest concentrations of phthalates, with values of 985µg/g and 846µg/g, respectively. Across the analyzed microenvironments, we observed a trend where concentrations of SVOCs tended to rise as dust particles decreased in size, forming a visually striking pattern. This phenomenon was particularly pronounced in dust samples collected from car floors and parking lots. Among SVOCs, PAEs emerged as the predominant contributors with > 90% followed by OPFRs and PAHs. The high levels of OPFRs in car floor dust align logically with the fact that numerous interior components of cars are treated with OPFRs, within a compact indoor microenvironment, to comply to fire safety regulations. Furthermore, petroleum products are a major source of PAHs in the environment and all the sampled cars in the study had combustion engines. Consequently, car dust is more likely to be polluted with PAHs stemming from petroleum combustion. Although previous investigations have noted an increase in heavy metals and brominated flame retardants with decreasing dust particles, this is the first study analyzing these SVOCs in different fractions of dust from various microenvironments. However, aside from two specific microenvironments, the observed pattern of escalating SVOC concentrations with smaller dust particle sizes was not corroborated among the examined microenvironments. This divergence in concentration trends suggests the potential involvement of supplementary variables in influencing SVOC distributions within dust particles.

Lifestyle factors and urine levels of organophosphorus flame retardants in endometrial cancer: insights from a case-control study

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are commonly used in various consumer products to prevent fire hazards. However, OPFRs have been linked to several health problems, including cancer. This study aimed to investigate the association between urine levels of OPFRs and endometrial cancer (EC), and to explore the correlation between concentrations of parent OPFR compounds and their metabolites. Urine samples from 76 EC patients and 76 healthy controls were collected and analyzed for the levels of five common parent OPFRs and their respective metabolites. Propensity score matching was applied to account for differences in baseline characteristics between the two participant groups. Significantly higher levels of OPFRs in EC patients were identified, and logistic regression models were used to determine whether elevated OPFRs were associated with EC and to explore whether any lifestyle behaviors contributed to the increased OPFR levels. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients between the concentrations of the parent compounds and their metabolites were calculated. Out of the ten OPFRs studied, the median urine levels of bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BDCPP), tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP), and di-(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (DBEP) were significantly higher in EC patients compared to healthy controls. After matching 41 patients with 41 controls, multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that only BDCPP (OR 4.274; 95% CI 1.172-15.592) was an independent factor associated with EC. A lifestyle questionnaire survey found that urine BDCPP levels were related to age (OR 4.294; 95% CI 1.015-18.164), meals eaten out (OR 4.238; 95% CI 1.454-12.354), and consumption of chilled-ready meals (OR 0.118; 95% CI 0.014-0.985). A positive correlation was only observed between the concentrations of TBEP and its metabolite DBEP; other correlations were not significant. We concluded that higher urine BDCPP level was an independent factor associated with EC, and higher BDCPP levels were related to aging, more meals eaten out, and fewer chilled-ready meals. These findings highlight the potential hazard of long-term OPFR exposure on the development of EC.

The influence of emerging atmospheric organophosphorus flame retardants from land source emissions on the East China Sea

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) pose a new challenge to the marine environment due to their toxicity and persistence. This study explores the contributions of OPFR emissions from different land sources and sectors to its contamination of the East China Sea (ECS) using a novel atmospheric transport model（ChnMETOP）for POPs and a marine food web model. The results show that the major land sources causing OPFR pollution in the ECS were situated in Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and middle reach areas of China's Yangtze River, confirming that source proximity made most significant contributions to OPFR pollution in the ECS. Among those OPFR emission sectors, industrial emissions accounted for the highest modeled OPFR levels in the seawaters, followed by the OPFR usage process in textile, plastic, and rubber products. Assessment of bioaccumulation of OPFR in the marine food web of the ECS and the potential risk in commercial fish consumers reveals lower exposure risk via dietary fish ingestion. However, the risk might increase if OPFRs are continuously bioaccumulated in the biotic and released into the abiotic marine environment. This study simultaneously identified both the source locations and emission sectors, thereby providing important policy implications in mitigating OPFR pollution in the ECS marine environment.

Exposure, bioaccumulation, and risk assessment of organophosphate flame retardants in crayfish in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), a novel class of persistent pollutants, are widely distributed in the environment, and their potential health risks have garnered significant global attention in recent years. Crayfish is a popular freshwater crustacean product in China primarily sourced from the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The purpose of this study was to investigate the exposure levels of OPFRs in crayfish, assess the health and safety risks associated with crayfish consumption, and explore the bioaccumulation of OPFRs in environmental water and sediment on crayfish. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was employed to analyze 7 common OPFRs in 106 crayfish samples and 76 environmental samples. The results revealed that OPFRs were detected at a high frequency of 100% in crayfish, with tripropyl phosphate (TPP) being the predominant pollutant found in edible portions while also exhibiting secondary contamination within the crayfish food chain. Monte Carlo modeling combined with @risk risk assessment software demonstrated that TPP present in crayfish muscles had the most substantial impact on health effects, however, overall OPFR exposure did not pose significant risks to human health. Furthermore, analysis of OPFRs bioenrichment ability indicated that crayfish predominantly accumulated these compounds within their edible parts from surrounding environmental water sources, particularly highlighting TPP's potential for bioaccumulation.

Prenatal exposure to emerging and traditional organophosphate flame retardants: Regional comparison, transplacental transfer, and birth outcomes

During gestation, organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) have the potential to pose health risks to fetuses due to their ability to cross the placental barrier. However, data are scarce regarding the transplacental transfer of these compounds, particularly concerning emerging OPFRs and regional variations. In this study, we analyzed 14 traditional OPFRs and 5 emerging OPFRs in maternal and cord serum samples from Mianyang and Hangzhou, two cities in eastern and western China, respectively. The results revealed marked disparities in the overall levels of OPFRs between the two cities (p<0.05), with the average concentration in maternal serum being higher in Hangzhou (14.55ng/mL) than in Mianyang (8.28ng/mL). The most abundant compounds found in both cities were tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), and Tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP). Additionally, this study marked the first detection of novel OPFRs, including resorcinol bis (diphenyl phosphate) (RDP), isodecyl diphenyl phosphate (IDDPP), cresyl diphenyl phosphate (CDP), and bisphenol A bis (diphenyl phosphate) (BPA-BDPP) in maternal and cord serum simultaneously with the detection frequencies higher than 45%. This study also found that transplacental transfer efficiencies for OPFRs varied by ester group, with Aryl-OPFRs exhibiting the highest transfer rates (0.90-1.11) and Alkyl-OPFRs exhibiting the lowest (0.66-0.83). Transfer efficiencies exhibited a positive correlation with log Kow values (p<0.05), suggesting that hydrophobic OPFRs with higher log Kow values are more likely to permeate the placental barrier. Moreover, the exposure levels of Tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP), Tri (Chloropropyl) Phosphate (TCIPP), TPHP, and CDP in cord serum were negatively associated (p<0.05) with birthweight of newborns. This research adds to our understanding of the transplacental transfer of OPFRs and the possible health risks associated with prenatal exposure.

Levels of organophosphate flame retardants and their metabolites among 391 volunteers in Taiwan: difference between adults and children.

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are ubiquitous in the environment. The compositions and concentrations of different OPFRs metabolites vary in different environments depending on different human activities. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the exposure of different age groups to OPFRs in Taiwan. Volunteers provided urine samples and responded to questionnaires including demographic factors, underlying disease, lifestyle information, and occupation from October 2021 to January 2022. OPFR measurements were performed using a Waters Acquity Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography system coupled with a Waters Xevo TQ-XS mass spectrometer. A total of 391 volunteers (74 children and 317 adults) were enrolled in this study. The concentrations (presented as μg/g creatinine) of bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BDCPP, p = 0.029) and tri-n-butyl phosphate (TNBP, p = 0.008) were higher in the adult group, while the concentrations of bis-2-chloroethyl phosphate (BCEP, p = 0.024), diphenyl phosphate (DPHP, p < 0.001), tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP, p = 0.009), and Tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP, p = 0.007) were higher in the child group. Compared with school age children (>6 years), the concentration of di(2-n-butoxyethyl) phthalate (DBEP, 1.14 vs. 0.20 μg/g creatinine, p = 0.001), DPHP (1.23 vs. 0.54 μg/g creatinine, p = 0.036), TBEP (1.63 vs. 0.29 μg/g creatinine, p < 0.001), and the sum of OPFR metabolites (ΣOPFRs, 6.58 vs. 2.04 μg/g creatinine, p < 0.001) were statistically higher in preschool-aged children. After adjusting for confounding factors, pre-school age [odds ratio (OR): 4.579, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.389-13.115] and current smoker (OR: 5.328, 95%CI: 1.858-14.955) were independently associated with the risk of ΣOPFRs higher than 90 percentile. This study revealed the distribution of different OPFRs metabolites in children and adults. DBEP, DPHP, TBEP, and ΣOPFR were higher in preschool-aged children. Pre-school age and current smoking status were independent risk factors for ΣOPFRs higher than 90 percentile.

Serum organophosphate flame retardants and plasticizers in Chinese females of childbearing age: Association with serum reproductive and thyroid hormones

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are extensively used as flame retardants and plasticizers, but their endocrine disrupting potentials have raised concerns. However, the impacts of OPFR exposures on reproductive and thyroid hormones in females remains unclear. In this study, serum concentrations of OPFRs were investigated, and levels of reproductive and thyroid hormones, including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol, anti-Müllerian hormone, prolactin (PRL), testosterone (T), and thyroid stimulating hormone, were analyzed in childbearing-age females undergoing in-vitro fertilization treatment from Tianjin, a coastal city in China (n=319). Tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) was the predominant OPFR, with a median concentration of 0.33ng/mL and a detection frequency of 96.6%. In the whole population, tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) and tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) were positively associated with T (p<0.05), while triethyl phosphate (TEP) was negatively associated with LH (p<0.05) and LH/FSH (p<0.01). Particularly, TCIPP was negatively associated with PRL in the younger subgroup (age≤30, p<0.05). Moreover, TCIPP was negatively associated with diagnostic antral follicle counting (AFC) in the mediation analysis by a dominating direct effect (p<0.01). In conclusion, serum levels of OPFRs were significantly associated with reproductive and thyroid hormone levels and a risk of decreased ovarian reserve in childbearing-age females, with age and body mass index being significant influencing factors.

Organophosphate Flame Retardants in Pregnant Women: Sources, Occurrence, and Potential Risks to Pregnancy Outcomes

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are found in various environmental matrixes and human samples. Exposure to OPFRs during gestation may interfere with pregnancy, for example, inducing maternal oxidative stress and maternal hypertension during pregnancy, interfering maternal and fetal thyroid hormone secretion and fetal neurodevelopment, and causing fetal metabolic abnormalities. However, the consequences of OPFR exposure on pregnant women, impact on mother-to-child transmission of OPFRs, and harmful effects on fetal and pregnancy outcomes have not been evaluated. This review describes the exposure to OPFRs in pregnant women worldwide, based on metabolites of OPFRs (mOPs) in urine for prenatal exposure and OPFRs in breast milk for postnatal exposure. Predictors of maternal exposure to OPFRs and variability of mOPs in urine have been discussed. Mother-to-child transmission pathways of OPFRs have been scrutinized, considering the levels of OPFRs and their metabolites in amniotic fluid, placenta, deciduae, chorionic villi, and cord blood. The results showed that bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BDCIPP) and diphenyl phosphate (DPHP) were the two predominant mOPs in urine, with detection frequencies of >90%. The estimated daily intake (EDIM) indicates low risk when infants are exposed to OPFRs from breast milk. Furthermore, higher exposure levels of OPFRs in pregnant women may increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes and influence the developmental behavior of infants. This review summarizes the knowledge gaps of OPFRs in pregnant women and highlights the crucial steps for assessing health risks in susceptible populations, such as pregnant women and fetuses.

Occurrence and risk of human exposure to organophosphate flame retardants in indoor air and dust in Hanoi, Vietnam

The presence and distribution of thirteen organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) were investigated in indoor air and dust samples collected in Hanoi, Vietnam. The total OPFRs (ƩOPFRs) concentrations in indoor air and dust samples were 42.3-358ngm-3 (median 101ngm-3) and 1290-17,500ngg-1 (median 7580ngg-1), respectively. The profile of OPFRs in both indoor air and dust indicated that tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP) was the most dominant compound with a median concentration of 75.3ngm-3 and 3620ngg-1, contributing 75.2% and 46.1% to ƩOPFRs concentrations in indoor air and dust, respectively, followed by tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP), with a median concentration of 16.3ngm-3 and 2500ngg-1, contributing 14.1% and 33.6% to ƩOPFRs concentrations in indoor air and dust, respectively. The levels of OPFRs in the indoor air samples and corresponding indoor dust samples showed a strong positive correlation. The total estimated daily intakes (EDItotal) of ƩOPFRs (via air inhalation, dust ingestion, and dermal absorption) for adults and toddlers under the median and high exposure scenarios were 36.7 and 160ngkg-1 d-1, and 266 and 1270ngkg-1 d-1, respectively. Among the investigated exposure pathways, dermal absorption was a primary exposure pathway to OPFRs for both toddlers and adults. The hazard quotients (HQ) ranged from 5.31×10-8 to 6.47×10-2 (<1), and the lifetime cancer risks (LCR) were from 2.05×10-11 to 7.37×10-8 (<10-6), indicating that human health risks from exposure to OPFRs in indoor environments are not significant.

Human exposure to short-chain chlorinated paraffins and organophosphate flame retardants in relation to paired multiple sources

In this study, the levels and distributions of short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) were determined in 10-88 aged human serum/hair and their paired multiple exposure sources, including one-day composite food, drinking water, and house dust. The average concentration of SCCPs and OPFRs were respectively 6313 and 176ng/g lipid weight (lw) in serum, 1008 and 108ng/g dry weight (dw) in hair, 1131 and 27.2ng/g dw in food, not detected and 45.1ng/L in drinking water, and 2405 and 864ng/g in house dust. The levels of SCCPs in serum of adults were significantly higher than those of juvenile (Mann-Whitney U test, p<0.05), whereas gender showed no statistically significant difference in SCCPs and OPFRs levels. In addition, there were significant relationships of OPFR concentrations between serum and drinking water as well as hair and food using the multiple linear regression analysis, whereas no correlation was observed for SCCPs. Based on the estimated daily intake, the major exposure pathway for SCCPs was food, while for OPFRs, it was food and drinking water with three order magnitude safety margin.

Occurrence of Halogenated and Organophosphate Flame Retardants in Sediments and Eels (Anguilla anguilla) From Bizerte Lagoon, Tunisia

Contamination by classic (polybromodiphenyl ethers, PBDEs) and emerging halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) like pentabromobenzene (PBEB), hexabromobenzene (HBB), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE ) and halogenated norbornenes (HNs), as well as organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) were investigated in sediment and eel (Anguilla Anguilla) samples from Bizerte Lagoon, northern Tunisia. This is the first time that OPFR levels have been reported in this area, showing higher concentrations than HFRs: from 9.77 to 164 ng/g dry weight (dw) and from 19.7 to 2154 ng/g lipid weight (lw) for sediment and eel samples, respectively. As regards HFRs, concentrations ranged from 3.30 to 28.5 ng/g dw in sediments and from 4.72 to 151 ng/g lw in eels. The relationship between OPFR and HFR concentrations in sediment and total organic content (TOC) was examined. Results suggested that OPFR levels were significantly correlated with TOC, whereas no correlation was found for HFRs and TOC. The study of potential health risks by eel consumption suggested that there is no significant human health risk associated with the dietary intakes for PBDEs.

Organophosphate contaminants in North Atlantic fin whales

Pollution of the marine environment by litter composed of plastics is a growing concern. Chemical additives such as organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), which are added to plastics to improve their qualities, are in focus because they allegedly cause adverse effects on marine fauna. Here we analyse OPFR levels in the muscle of fin whales because, as a mysticete, this cetacean obtains its food by filter-feeding and is thus highly vulnerable to marine litter. Moreover, the fin whale performs long-range migrations from low-latitude areas in winter to high-latitude areas in summer, a trait that makes it a potentially good large-scale biomonitor of pollution. We also analyse OPFR levels in its main prey, the krill Meganyctiphanes norvegica, to assess transfer through diet. The samples analysed consisted of muscle tissue from 20 fin whales and whole-body homogenates of 10 krill samples, all collected off West Iceland. From the 19 OPFRs analysed, we detected 7 in the fin whale and 5 in the krill samples. Tri-n-butyl phosphate (TNBP), Isopropylated triphenyl phosphate (IPPP) and Triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) were the most abundant compounds found in both species. Mean ∑OPFR concentration, expressed on a lipid weight basis, was 985 (SD=2239) ngg-1 in fin whale muscle, and 949 (SD=1090) ngg-1 in krill homogenates. These results constitute the first evidence of the presence of OPFRs in the tissues of fin whales. Furthermore, they seem to support the non-significance of bioaccumulation of OPFRs through lifespan and of biomagnification trough the food web.

Organophosphate flame retardants and bisphenol A in children's urine in Hong Kong: has the burden been underestimated?

The urine levels of organophosphate flame retardants (PFRs) and bisphenol A (BPA) in kindergarten children (n = 31, 4-6 years old, sampling performed in 2016) in Hong Kong were measured. The detection frequency of the target PFRs, tri(2-chloroethyl)phosphate (TCEP), tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP), tris(chloroisopropyl)phosphate (TCIPP), triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) and 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) ranged from 52% to 84%. The 95th percentile urinary concentrations of TPHP, TDCIPP, TCIPP, EHDPP and TCEP were 1.70, 0.24, 0.03, 0.05, 0.68 and 0.03 ng/mL, respectively. The median urine level of BPA was 1.69 ng/mL, with a detection frequency of 77%. Due to the lack of metabolism information, two scenarios were used to calculate the estimated daily intake (EDI) of these compounds. Back-calculated EDIs of PFRs using the urinary excretion rates from in vivo animal data (scenario 2) were up to 2.97 μg/kg/d (TDCIPP), which was only a little less than that observed in a sample of American infants, and the reference dose (RfD), meaning that the potential health risk of TDCIPP cannot be ignored. Dust ingestion was suggested to be the major pathway of exposure to PFRs, but when the levels in dust and air particles in kindergartens in Hong Kong were used to predict EDIs, these values were nearly half as much as those predicted from urinary TDCIPP in this study. This suggested that children's PFRs burden may be underestimated when considering only PFR levels in dust or air. There is thus a need for further studies with large-scale surveys and investigation of exposure routes.

Firefighter hood contamination: Efficiency of laundering to remove PAHs and FRs

Firefighters are occupationally exposed to products of combustion containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and flame retardants (FRs), potentially contributing to their increased risk for certain cancers. Personal protective equipment (PPE), including firefighter hoods, helps to reduce firefighters’ exposure to toxic substances during fire responses by providing a layer of material on which contaminants deposit prior to reaching the firefighters skin. However, over time hoods that retain some contamination may actually contribute to firefighters’ systemic dose. We investigated the effectiveness of laundering to reduce or remove contamination on the hoods, specifically PAHs and three classes of FRs: polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), non-PBDE flame retardants (NPBFRs), and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs). Participants in the study were grouped into crews of 12 firefighters who worked in pairs by job assignment while responding to controlled fires in a single-family residential structure. For each pair of firefighters, one hood was laundered after every scenario and one was not. Bulk samples of the routinely laundered and unlaundered hoods from five pairs of firefighters were collected and analyzed. Residual levels of OPFRs, NPBFRs, and PAHs were lower in the routinely laundered hoods, with total levels of each class of chemicals being 56–81% lower, on average, than the unlaundered hoods. PBDEs, on average, were 43% higher in the laundered hoods, most likely from cross contamination. After this initial testing, four of the five unlaundered exposed hoods were subsequently laundered with other heavily exposed (unlaundered) and unexposed (new) hoods. Post-laundering evaluation of these hoods revealed increased levels of PBDEs, NPBFRs, and OPFRs in both previously exposed and unexposed hoods, indicating cross contamination. For PAHs, there was little evidence of cross contamination and the exposed hoods were significantly less contaminated after laundering (76% reduction; p = 0.011). Further research is needed to understand how residual contamination on hoods could contribute to firefighters’ systemic exposures.

Organophosphate flame retardants in the indoor and outdoor dust and gas-phase of Alexandria, Egypt

Little is known about the presence of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) as a substitute for polybrominated diphenyl ethers in developing countries. This study investigated - for the first time - concentrations, sources and exposure levels of OPFRs in the indoor and outdoor environments of Alexandria, Egypt, in dust and gas-phase samples. Passive samplers were deployed (n = 78) to determine gaseous concentrations, and various dust samples were collected from apartments (n = 25), working places (n = 14), cars (n = 18), and outdoors (OD, n = 30). Indoor concentrations (air: 7.0-64 pg/m3; dust: 150-1850 ng/g) were significantly higher than outdoor (2.0-16 pg/m3 and 83-475 ng/g) concentrations. Tris-1,3-dichloropropyl phosphate (TDCIPP), tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP), tri (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP) and triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) dominated in all samples with more indoor variabilities. Profiles of OPFRs in OD and floor dust (collected from carpets and floors) were similar but differed from elevated fine dust (collected 1 m above the floor from all available surfaces), possibly due to the influence of carryover of OD by shoes. Despite the high uncertainty in dust - air partitioning coefficients, log transformed values showed significant linear relationships with log octanol - air-partitioning coefficients in all microenvironments, indicating an equilibrium partitioning between dust and vapor. Exposure assessment indicated the importance of the dermal exposure route for adults and ingestion route for children.

Presence and human exposure assessment of organophosphate flame retardants (OPEs) in indoor dust and air in Beijing, China

In this study, levels of 14 organophosphate flame retardants (OPEs) were measured in 101 indoor dust samples collected from dormitories, residential homes, and offices in Beijing, China. In addition, paired air samples were also analyzed to evaluate any correlation between OPE levels in air and that in corresponding dust samples. The Σ14OPEs levels substantially varied between individual samples. Thereinto, significantly higher OPE levels were found in dust samples from office (mean value: 14 μg g-1), comparing to that in dust samples from residential homes (mean value: 5.9 μg g-1) and dormitories (mean value: 6.9 μg g-1). Congener profiles of OPEs in dust samples from different microenvironments indicated that tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) was the dominant OPE in the office samples, followed by tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP). In contrast, TCPP was the dominant OPE in the residential home and dormitory samples, followed by TCEP. The mean concentration (range) of Σ14OPEs in the 15 air samples was 5.2 (1.0-20) ng m-3, and TCPP was the dominated congener in these samples. The concentration of TCEP and TCPP in air was positively correlated with that in corresponding indoor dust, and OPEs with highly saturated vapor pressures have higher fractions in the air than that in the dust. The estimated daily intakes through dust ingestion, dermal absorption, and inhalation indicated that the exposure to OPEs in indoor environments do not result in significant health risk for the general population in Beijing.

Evaluation of the current contamination status of PFASs and OPFRs in South Korean tap water associated with its origin

We investigated the concentrations of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in 44 tap water samples, collected from eight major cities in South Korea served by four representative watersheds, to evaluate the water contamination status. The total concentrations of PFASs and OPFRs ranged from 1.44 to 224ng/L (median=11.9ng/L), and 74.0 to 342ng/L (median=151ng/L), respectively. The predominant compounds in tap water were perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA), perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP), and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP). Tap water originating from the Nakdong River within an industrial complex showed a notably higher PFHxS proportion to total PFASs. In addition, significantly higher PFAS levels were found in river-originating tap water than in lake/reservoir-originating tap water (Mann-Whitney U test, p<0.05). Meanwhile, major OPFRs showed no clear difference in distribution by region, and no significant difference in major OPFR levels was observed according to tap water origin. Finally, the average human exposure via tap water consumption was estimated for PFASs (46.8ng/person/day) and OPFRs (254ng/person/day).

Assessment of organophosphate flame retardants in surface water and sediment from a freshwater environment (Yangtze River, China).

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) have been detected in the surface water, suspended sediments, and river sediments from the Yangtze River in China. A modified polar organic chemical integrative sampler (m-POCIS) was successfully used to quantify the OPFR concentrations in surface water. The OPFR concentrations estimated by the field m-POCIS at six sampling locations ranged from 8.99 to 112.45ng/L with an average concentration of 47.04ng/L. The OPFR concentrations in suspended sediments were related to the sediment particle size distribution. Chlorinated and alkyl OPFRs were the principle compounds in sediments, especially tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) with concentrations of 3.37-29.65ng/g. The relationship between the OPFR concentrations and total organic carbon (TOC) contents in sediments was examined. The results suggested that the OPFR concentrations were significantly correlated with the TOC contents. The primary OPFR transport mechanism in a freshwater environment occurs in surface water rather than sediment. This was evaluated by the logKow and field sediment-water partition coefficient (logKoc) values between the sediment and water. Finally, the various distributions and transport of OPFRs at the sampling sites indicated that human activities, agricultural production, and wastewater effluents from sewage plants have an important effect on the OPFR levels in a freshwater environment.
