The Potential of Using Mobile-Based Interactive Multimedia to Improve Scientific Literacy

The level of scientific literacy among students in Indonesia is still low. Teachers have attempted to improve it through the use of different teaching models, a variety of resources and technology, and incorporating a scientific approach in the learning process. Mobile-based interactive multimedia can be used as an alternative learning resource to improve students’ scientific literacy. This study aims to explore about about the potential of using mobile-based multimedia interactive to improve scientific literacy. This study employs a qualitative research with the survey as the data collection method. The population in this study were all high school students in Special Region of Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia. Meanwhile, the research sample are 10th grade students of SMA 1 Pengasih with a total number of 108 students who were selected randomly. The questionnaires distribution process was conducted online with using Google Forms after the researcher demonstrate various types of media that can be used for learning activities. The results of this study showed that the use of mobile-based interactive multimedia in learning has a great opportunity to be able to increase students' scientific literacy because in addition to high student interest, there are also many benefits that will be obtained by students, especially to make it easier for students to understand learning material.

Scientific Misinformation and Mistrust of COVID-19 Preventive Measures among the UK Population: A Pilot Study.

The popularisation of complex biomedical concepts brought about by COVID-19 has led to the rapid proliferation and diffusion of scientific misinformation, particularly among individuals with inadequate levels of scientific and digital literacy. A cross-sectional online survey of a UK population sample was conducted to address three key aims: to verify whether there is a correlation between participants' belief in false information around COVID-19 and adherence to preventive measures; to investigate whether participants' scientific misinformation and preventive behaviour are associated with their demographic characteristics; and to evaluate whether participants' scientific misinformation and preventive behaviour can predict their likelihood of having contracted COVID-19. Non-parametric data analysis highlighted a strong negative correlation between participants' belief in misinformation and their trust in preventive measures. Both variables were significantly associated with participants' education levels, but not with their religious beliefs. Remarkably, neither science misinformation levels nor the trust in preventive measures were statistically associated with the likelihood of having contracted COVID-19. Taken together, these findings reinforce the urgency of ensuring that the population is equipped with adequate scientific literacy to enable them to evaluate the reliability of scientific information and recognise the importance of individual preventive behaviours to minimise community spread of infectious diseases.

Improving Students' Scientific Literacy and Cognitive Learning Outcomes through Ethnoscience-Based PjBL Model

Scientific literacy is one of the basic skills to compete in an increasingly competitive life. Nevertheless, Indonesian students continue to have low levels of scientific literacy. This study aims to determine the difference in students' scientific literacy and cognitive learning outcomes in the experimental and control classes and to find students' responses to the ethnoscience-based PjBL model in learning. This quasi-experimental research applies a non-equivalent control group design. The samples were eleventh-grade science students at SMA Negeri 2 Banjarmasin in the even semester of the 2021/2022 academic year. The data were collected using test and non-test methods. The instruments were scientific literacy and cognitive learning tests and a response questionnaire as a non-test instrument. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential analysis. The results showed significant differences in scientific literacy and cognitive learning outcomes between students in the experimental and control classes. The ethnoscience-based PjBL model gets a very good response. This study concludes that implementing the ethnoscience-based PjBL model can improve students' scientific literacy and cognitive learning outcomes. This study contributes to chemistry learning by improving scientific literacy and learning outcomes through the ethnoscience-based PjBL model.

Understanding the Role of Service-Learning on Civic Engagement and Scientific Literacy

Implementation of service-learning within courses may increase students’ overall attitudes towards themselves, their community, and their school and improve academic performance. The study aim was to understand students’ perceptions of prior civic engagement experiences and level of scientific literacy to gauge if participation in course-based service-learning impacted continual community engagement and improved scientific literacy. Students completed a pre- and post-assessment tool measuring their level of community engagement and scientific literacy administered in six courses. Results showed that service-learning did not negatively affect student perception of civic engagement. Students enrolled in service-based courses demonstrated significant improvement in their scientific literacy. Participation in service learning facilitates growth in scientific inquiry and civic engagement.

Психолого-педагогические основы подготовки педагогов к развитию исходных представлений младших школьников (на материале курса «Окружающий мир»)

<p>In 2021, a working group of the Moscow State University of Psychology and Education developed a technique for developing student’s initial representations to scientific concepts based on the material of mathematics and natural sciences in primary school. The technique was refined and concretized on the material of the course “Natural sciences”. The paper presents the materials of a study in which students of the 3rd year of the bachelor's degree program of the psychological and pedagogical direction of training (21 people, who were divided into two subgroups: experimental – 11 people, control – 10 people. The average academic performance score of each group of students is 4,7 on a five-point scale) and students of the 3rd grade of primary school of Moscow (51 people, who were also divided into two groups: experimental – 28 people, control – 23 people). The level of science literacy of primary school student’s was measured using three-level thematic tasks (author E.V. Chudinova). The results of the study showed that the application of technique for the development of primary school student’s initial natural science representations in the preparation of future teachers affects the educational results of schoolchildren. It is noted that students who designed lessons using the technique for developing student’s initial representations to scientific concepts on the material of natural sciences in primary school paid special attention not only to the correct answers of students, but also to erroneous judgments. This helped them in organizing the educational discussion. It is emphasized that an erroneous judgment can become a tool for the mental development of a primary school student’s.</p>

The Association Between the Academic Level of Biology Education Students at A Private University and Their Level of Trust in Conspiracy Theories Related to COVID-19

A low level of scientific literacy and application leads students to believe in conspiracy theories (CTs). The purpose of this study was to analyze the accuracy of biology education students’ responses to CTs about COVID-19 and its association with their academic level. The population of this survey research was 134 students at the Department of Biology Education, from a private university located in East Java, Indonesia. The research sample included twenty students with the highest GPA (high academic group) and twenty students with the lowest GPA (low academic group). A CT questionnaire about COVID-19 was used as a data collection instrument. Less than half of the students correctly answered five of the eight CT questions asked. Only four CT items had a response accuracy above 50 percent. Spearman’s rho test revealed that there was no significant correlation between GPA and students’ distrust of CTs. Based on the results of the Kruskal-Wallis H test analysis, the GPA of high and low academic students was significantly different. However, Chi-Square analysis showed that students’ distrust of all CTs asked was not significantly associated with students’ academic level. Concerning the findings of this study, it is necessary for suggesting to reformulate the curriculum for science and biology education to improve the scientific literacy and information literacy of prospective teachers.

Analisis Kemampuan Literasi Sains Biologi Peserta Didik Madrasah Aliyah Jabal Noer Sidoarjo

The purpose of this study was to analyze the literacy skills of students in MA Jabal Noer in biology. The quality of education is determined by the learning outcomes of students from the assessment instruments provided. Assessment of science literacy is a benchmark that determines the quality of education in a country that is sheltered by PISA. Instruments for science literacy skills in the form of questions and an assessment rubric as a guide for determining the level of science literacy of students. Student learning outcomes are influenced by the assessment mandated in the 2013 Curriculum. The results of this study indicate that the level of science literacy in biology subjects still tends to be at level 3, namely interpreting phenomena. While the learning outcomes of students are classified in the low category. The causes of low science literacy skills are viewed from learning activities through lesson plans made by the teacher. The study from the RPP analysis shows that the learning activities, media learning, and assessments carried out do not yet support students' science literacy. The results of this study indicate the main factors that influence students' low science literacy in biology subjects

Analysis of Students Scientific Literacy Skills on Ecosystem Materials at Boalemo District Junior High School

This study aims to determine the level of scientific literacy skills of stutends on ecosystem learning material in Boalemo Regency Junior High School. The research applied a survey research type with a quantitative descriptive approach. The population in this study are 2 classes of 8th grade of SMP N 2 Dulupi with 42 students, A class of 8th grade SMP 8 Satap Dulupi with 26 students, and 5 classes of 8th grade of SMP N 1 Tilamuta with 120 students. The total samples amounted o 188 students. The sampling technique used random sampling. The research sample consisted of 60 students, consisting of 20 grade 8 students at SMPN 2 Dulupi, 20 grade 8 students at SMP 8 satap Dulupi, and 20 grade 8 students SMPN 1 Tilamuta. The instrument used is a question of students scientific literacy, which consists of 17 questions. The research data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that the level of scientific literacy skills of students in Boalemo Regency Junior High School s was 54.4, which was in th “low” category. The scientific literacy level of students on multiple choice questions has an average score of 57.85 at SMP N 1 Tilamuta, 53.57 at SMP N 2 Dulupi, and 51.78 at SMP 8 Satap Dulupi. On the question of attitude assessment, the average score was 56.67 at SMP N 1 Tilamuta, 62.08 at SMP N 2 Dulupi, and 60.83 at SMP 8 Satap Dulupi.

Determination of Scientific Literacy Levels of Primary School Teachers and Investigation in Terms of Different Variables

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how variables gender, seniority, age and graduated department affect the science literacy levels of primary school teachers. 
 Design/Methodology/Approach: In the study, the survey method used. The study group of the study consists of 506 primary school teachers, 337 females, and 169 male teachers, working in primary schools in Bursa province and its districts during the 2020-2021 academic year. "Science for All Americans" publication, which was prepared by Laugksch and Spargo in 1996 and translated into Turkish by Duruk in (2012), “Basic Science Literacy Test”, which all validity and reliability tests were carried out,was used to obtain research data. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis techniques. 
 Findings: As a result of examining the research data; no significant difference was observed between the variables of gender, seniority, graduated department and the science literacy levels of primary school teachers. However, it is observed that the age variable has a significant difference for the science-technology-society sub-dimension. It has been determined that this difference is in favor of the groups under 25 years old among the groups between ages of 31-35, under the age of 25, and over the age of 40. 
 Highlights: This research provides valuable data to holistically evaluate many different affective variables that affect the scientific literacy level of primary school teachers. Although this research includes the results of primary school teachers in a single province, the obtained evidence predicts the need for them to be supported in terms of scientific literacy and its sub-dimensions.

Relationship Between Scientific Literacy and the Attitude Towards Reading Scientific Texts: A Study on Primary School Teacher Candidates

The current study sought to determine the association between primary school teacher candidates’ levels of scientific literacy and their attitudes about reading scientific texts. The study used a correlational survey technique. The sample population consisted of 287 primary school teacher candidates who were enrolled in a public university in South-Eastern Anatolia's education faculty for the 2020–2021 academic year. The "Personal Information Form," "Universal Science Literacy Scale," and "Attitude Scale towards Reading Scientific Texts" were used to gather the data. During the data analysis stage, frequency and percentage values for the variables were determined. Correlation, simple regression, and multiple regression analyses were then performed. The results revealed that although teacher candidates' reading and scientific text reading rates were insufficient, their attitudes toward scientific literacy and scientific text reading were "good." The attitude toward reading scientific materials and the sub-dimensions of scientific literacy were found to be positively and statistically correlated. Along with the "habits of mind" and "meta-cognition and self-direction" sub-dimensions, it was also noted that scientific literacy is a statistically significant predictor of attitude toward reading scientific materials. Based on their findings, the researcher came up with several recommendations.

Analysis of Current Situation Regarding Scientific Fitness Literacy of Nurses in Sports Medicine Integration.

ObjectiveThe present study aims to analyze the current situation of scientific fitness literacy in nurses and provide a basis for all-round strategies for its improvement.MethodsNurses in tertiary hospitals were conveniently selected as subjects in order to investigate the current situation regarding the scientific fitness literacy of nurses. The selection process was completed via the demographics questionnaire and the adult scale of scientific fitness literacy in sports medicine integration. As the minimum sample size was 5–10 times the number of variables in the study of exploring influencing factors of related variables and using the equation n{rm{N = }}left[{{rm{number of variables times }}left({{rm{5 - 10}}} right)} right]{rm{ times `1 + 10% ]}}n, given 20% of invalid questionnaires, the sample size should be >600 persons. The methods used for statistical analysis were descriptive statistical analysis and the t-test.ResultsThe scientific fitness literacy score in nurses was 110.81 ± 25.04 (relative value: 69.7%); this consisted of 50.85 ± 11.19 (73.7%) for scientific fitness knowledge dimension, 25.99 ± 5.35 (78.8%) for scientific fitness attitude dimension, and 33.97 ± 13.59 (59.6%) for scientific fitness behavior and skill dimension. The results of the independent sample t-test and analysis of variance showed that the differences in gender, education level, position, exercise habits, and balanced diet in daily life among nurses (regarding scientific fitness literacy) were statistically significant (P < 0.05).ConclusionNurses generally have an above-average level of scientific fitness literacy; this is mainly due to their good cognition and attitude regarding scientific fitness. However, their scientific fitness behaviors and skills are greatly inadequate. They are especially weak in completing WHO’s recommended amount of exercise, mastering the cores of sports skills, undergoing a professional assessment before exercise, and developing exercise plans.

Smart Apps Creator 3 Interactive Multimedia Based on Stream to Improve Students' Scientific Literacy During the Covid-19 Pandemic

By applying a learning-based approach model Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics in online learning, this study intends to investigate Smart Apps Creator, an interactive multimedia application to promote students' scientific literacy. SAC interactive multimedia is used to learn the media and comprehend scientific concepts. Explaining problems, designing research, carrying them out, analyzing data, evaluating findings, and sharing knowledge are all aspects of scientific literacy. Through the use of this program, STREAM-based learning is being used to improve students' scientific literacy. The results of the students' pretest and posttest were used to collect and analyze the study data in the form of quantitative descriptive analysis. With 80 responses among the students who participated in the survey and five science teachers who had used STREAM-based interactive multimedia, the study tool was delivered to the target population via a WhatsApp group. The findings indicated that the average percentage of scientific literacy with N-Gain in the medium category was 68%, indicating an improvement in student learning as a result of the use of SAC interactive multimedia learning. The study's findings demonstrate that SAC-based STREAM interactive multimedia learning is statistically highly significant and has been demonstrated to be successful in raising students' levels of scientific literacy in online learning during the present epidemic.

Test Instrument to Measure Student’s Level of Chemical Literacy in Macromolecules Topic

The science literacy level of students can be determined using a measuring instrument, namely a test instrument that includes four aspects of chemical literacy in each item. This study aims to develop a test instrument that is used to measure the achievement of a student's chemical literacy level. The research method used is the Model of Educational Reconstruction (MER). The limited trial of the test instrument was implemented for twelve students in the senior high schools. Data collection was carried out based on validation sheets of test instruments from expert validation, pretest and posttest. Data analysis for the test instrument is based on validation of the test instrument using Aiken’s V formula. Based on the correlation coefficient analysis of the test instrument resulted in 20 valid question items with a correlation coefficient value of 30.8% having moderate validity criteria, 7.7% having high criteria and 12.8% having very high criteria. The reliability test shows that the test instrument is reliable and has a high correlation with the Cronbach Alpha value of of 0.920. The difficulty level of the question and the discriminatory of the question were determined. The results of the student response questionnaire to the test instrument have an average percentage of 79% with practical criteria. This research concludes that the test instruments can be used to measure the level of chemical literacy of students. The chemical literacy level of students at the low level and the nominal level of scientific literacy is the highest level the students can achieve.

Development of Assessment Sheet for Measuring Students’ Scientific Literacy Level in the Era of Revolution 4.0

This study aims to develop an assessment sheet as a measuring tool for the level of scientific literacy in the 4.0 revolution era for high school students in North Aceh. The development model used in this study is the ADDIE model which consists of 5 steps, namely: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Samples were selected by stratified cluster random sampling and purposive sampling. The instruments used were in the form of a module quality assessment sheet filled out by expert validators and a questionnaire response sheet for teachers and students. The data analysis used is the percentage formula. The average percentage of module quality assessment questionnaire sheets obtained from 6 validators is 93.00% while the responses of teachers and students are 84.65; 83.81%. The results of the research can be concluded that the assessment sheet as a measuring tool for the level of scientific literacy in the 4.0 revolution era for high school students throughout North Aceh which has been developed is suitable for use in chemistry learning and it is hoped that there will be further research for other materials in a wider scope

Political views and science literacy as indicators of vaccine confidence and COVID-19 concern.

SummaryIntroductionThe distrust, delay and refusal of vaccinations represent serious threats to global public health. As demonstrated by the dramatic worldwide impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, adequate vaccine coverage against infectious diseases is essential towards the preservation and function of virtually every aspect of our society. While the determinants of vaccine hesitancy and pandemic concern have been widely investigated, conflicting evidence exists with regards to their association with education levels and political views.MethodsThis study aimed to investigate whether science literacy levels and standpoint on social and economic matters are associated with different levels of vaccine confidence and COVID-19 concern. An online survey was circulated amongst participants recruited via convenience sampling, and data were analysed using non-parametric statistical tests.ResultsThe survey (n = 389) highlighted that participants who studied Science at General Certificate of Secondary Education level have a lower vaccine confidence than those with both lower and higher levels of science education. Participants with neutral/centrist political views expressed lower confidence than those with a libertarian social stance or a left-wing economic stance. A higher concern with the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with lower levels of science education, libertarian social views, and left-wing economic views.ConclusionsThe present study provides novel insight on the educational and political factors associated with vaccine hesitancy and pandemic concern within a British population sample.

Modeling the Relationship between Preservice Elementary Teachers’ Scientific Habits of Mind, Attitudes towards Socio-scientific Issues and Scientific Literacy

Socio-scientific issues (SSI), including dilemmas and problems in scientific and social terms, are directly related to individuals’ daily lives. Individuals’ interests and attitudes towards SSI also affect their perspective on events in their lives. For this reason, as a member of society, it is essential to research variables that are thought to be related to pre-service elementary teachers’ attitudes towards SSI. Based on this point, the relationship between pre-service elementary teachers’ attitudes towards SSI, their scientific habits of mind (SHOMS) for SSI, and their level of scientific literacy are studied and tried to be modeled. One hundred twenty pre-service elementary teachers studying at a university in the south-eastern Anatolia region of Turkey have participated in this study. The correlation research design from descriptive research methods is used in this study. In this context, three data collection tools are used with the personal data form. Research results have been analyzed by using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling. According to the analysis results, it is determined that pre-service elementary teachers’ SHOMS for SSI affect scientific literacy, and attitudes towards SSI affect interest in scientific knowledge and publications.

Improving Students’ Chemical Literacy Ability on Equilibrium Material Using Chemical Literacy-Based Teaching Materials

Trends in science education policy in the 21st century emphasize the importance of scientific literacy as a transferable outcome. This study aims to analyze the use of chemical literacy-based teaching materials in equilibrium material to improve students' chemical literacy ability. The results showed that the chemical literacy ability of students who were given chemical literacy-based teaching materials was higher than students who were given general chemistry teaching materials. The biggest difference in students' chemical literacy ability is at the nominal level of scientific literacy, which is 8.24 points; followed at the conceptual scientific literacy level of 6.74 points and at the functional scientific literacy level with a difference of 5.61 points.

Analysis of students' initial scientific literacy of science in elementary school teacher education student

This study aimed to determine the level of scientific literacy possessed by prospective elementary school teachers at Yogyakarta State University. The method used in this research is a qualitative description. The research design used is descriptive quantitative research. The number of subjects in this study was 44 students of PGSD UNY. Data was collected through an online questionnaire survey. Questionnaire data were obtained through question items distributed to respondents in Google Form. The data collection was analyzed using Microsoft Excel and explained as a descriptive explanation. The results of this study indicate that the average scientific literacy ability in scientific competence as a whole is 66.08%, with the achievement category being "good." The percentage of scientific literacy skills achievement on the indicator of identifying scientific problems is 58.33% with the "enough" category. The percentage of achievement on the indicator explaining scientific phenomena is 71.60% with the "good" category. In contrast, the percentage of scientific literacy achievement on scientific evidence indicators is 69.17% in the "good" category. Overall, the literacy level of PGSD UNY students is in the "good" category.

Profile of scientific literacy skills of biology students

Scientific literacy skills are very important skills to be mastered in learning activities in the 21st century. The objective of this study is to analyse the profile of scientific literacy skills of biology students of the class of 2017 at State University of Malang. This study is quantitative descriptive research. The respondents of the research were biology students in Endocrinology class,.The data were collected by conducting tests in the form of multiple-choice questions which were developed based on Test of Scientific Literacy Skills (TOSL) indicators that have been validated by material experts. The results showed that the literacy level of 25 7th biology students is still in the category of far below on five indicators with detail of the average scores, namely: identifying valid arguments with a mean value of 32; evaluating the use and misuse of information with a mean value of 16; justify inferences, predictions, and conclusions based on quantitative data with a mean value of 16; solving problems using quantitative skills including probability and statistics with a mean value of 44; understanding and interpreting basic statistics with a mean value of 24. In the other four indicators, the 25 biology students had a good level of scientific literacy, namely on indicators of understanding the design elements of research and how it affects scientific findings or conclusions with a mean value of 76; creating a graphical representation of the data with a mean value of 72; reading and interpreting graphical representations of data with a mean value of 80; and evaluating the validity of the source with a mean value of 80..

Development of PBL-Based Module to Facilitate Students’ Science Literacy and Independence Skills

The purpose of this study is to develop a respiratory system module, test its feasibility and practicality, and analyze the module potential to train students' scientific literacy skills and independence. The feasibility test is carried out through expert-judgment by experts and the module's readability test. The module practicality is measured by the responses of students and biology teachers. The potential of the module in practicing scientific literacy and student independence was obtained from the results of posttest and observations. The results showed that the feasibility level of the module according to material and media experts was 71,67% and 78,12% (feasible). The readability of the module according to students is 79% (feasible). The level of practicality of the module according to students and teachers are 82,27% and 96,15% (very practical). The results of the posttest and observation showed that the scientific literacy level of the experimental class reached 61.46% and for the control class was only 52,53%. The average independence of the experimental and control class are 61,84% and 53,14%. Conclusion: The respiratory system material module is feasible and practical to be applied in learning, and has the potential to train students' scientific literacy skills and independence.
