THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ HABIT IN LISTENING ENGLISH SONGS AND LISTENING COMPREHENSION

Students in Indonesia need the motivation to be more interested in English lessons, one of which is by giving songs in class. The English song can attract the students in the teaching and learning process for English class. The students at SMAN 1 Palu have a low ability in listening comprehension. This research aims to find out the relationship between the students’ habits in listening to English songs and their listening comprehension achievement. The result of this research consists of the interpretation of data obtained in this research, the relation of data obtained with the theories from both variables, and the relation comparison of this research with the previous students. The result data was obtained from 20 students of eleventh grade at MAN 1 Palu. Based on the result, the scores of sig between the effect Like Song and Don’t Like Song were 0,231 or more than 0,05. Then the researcher concluded that Listening to English song habits has a correlation with listening comprehension of the eleventh-grade students of MAN 1 Palu revealed by the mean score of the students’ questionnaire. The mean score level was 48.40%, which is a high category level.

Mapping the lesson: network graphs and microgenres

ABSTRACT While the use of video recording as a method of data collection has helped researchers to resolve the challenge of capturing classroom interactions between teachers and students, it can be challenging for the researchers and teachers to make sense of the rich data collected. This paper describes an approach of analysing and visualising a language lesson with lesson microgenre and network graphs to provide an overview map of the lesson enactment. Studying the language lesson from a lesson microgenre perspective can provide both the co-text and context of the lesson when specific segments of the lesson are identified for interpretation and reflection by the teacher. The lesson map is visualised using network graphs to show the progression, connections, and patterns of the lesson microgenres. The paper describes the application of the approach in a study of the English lessons conducted by two teachers in a Singapore primary school and discuss the implications of the approach on teacher training.

Needs Analysis for the Information System to Support Middle School Students’ Speaking Skills in English Classes

The study aimed to determine the needs and expectations regarding an online information system which will support speaking skills of secondary school students in English lesson. The participants of the study comprised 4 secondary school students and 4 secondary school English teachers in a district of Burdur province in Turkey. In the selection of the participants, convenience sampling model was adopted on the volunteering basis. In the study, the phenomenology research model was utilized. The data were obtained from the semi- structured interviews conducted face-to-face with the participants. In the analysis of the data, the Content Analysis technique was used. The results of the study revealed that participants were willing to access to the system via technologicsl devices like smart phones, computers, tablet pc and smart board. Since communication is important, participants stated that there should be video chat, instant messaging, announcements, forum, social networks, storage and game components in the system. In addition to these, participants noted that the properties such as activities, uploading home works, grading students, student information, attendance shedule, feedback, and duties and responsibilities should be available in the system. Morever, the participants stated that the applicability of the system depends on the introducing the system, motivation, internet-free usage, technological infrastructure, updatability and competitive features. Hereby, it is hoped that the results of these study will be useful in the development of an online information system to support speaking skills of secondary school students in English lesson.

Menumbuhkan Minat Belajar Bahasa Inggris Anak Lewat Pelaksanaan PKL 2 di LKSA Anak Gembira

This paper aims to find out the activities of implementing Field Work Practices carried out by Practitioners at LKSA Anak Gembira. Field Work Practice is one of the activities undertaken by final students in fulfilling assignments and practice during lectures. At this PKL, the practitioner will apply the PKL model in groups or it can be said that it is an effort to empower a group in overcoming their problems. The target to be achieved in this street vendor activity is to solve children's problems related to the lack of interest and interest in children in learning English, which often causes difficulties in following English lessons both at school and elsewhere. In addition, it was also reported that economic factors also contributed to the emergence of this problem, this is related to the high costs that will be incurred when choosing one type of English development tutoring. For this reason, in this street vendor activity, the practitioner also contributes to children by helping them overcome problems and come up with solutions and efforts to empower children. In this paper, we will describe some of the steps taken by a Social Worker in dealing with client problems and will obtain appropriate solutions and efforts to solve client problems.

INTEGRATED-HOLISTIC TEACHING PROTOTYPE FOR ENGLISH LESSON AT ISLAMIC SCHOOL: STEP FOR BUILDING HOLISTIC STUDENTS

English teachers often face confusion to relate between the materials and religious values especially teachers of Islamic school who should strongly show the relation. This paper aims to develop a teaching prototype as a guideline leading to the integration of religious values into English lesson for Islamic Junior High School. Design-based research was used as research method in which need analysis was initially done for gaining EFL teachers’ reflection and aspiration on their English class, and their understanding on integration of Islamic values. Three English teachers from both pesantren-based and non pesantren-based were involved as the research subjects. The need analysis was the basis for the prototype which then followed by expert judgment to shape the quality of prototype and future direction for integrated-holistic teaching. The study showed that integrated-holistic teaching for English lessons could cover spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and social dimensions which are very essential for students to be holistic/insan kamil students. In conclusion, English teachers are strongly possible to contextualize the prototype. Pedagogical implication of the study could be manifested by the existing clear direction for teaching English holistically. This study is not free from limitation. It needs to be more operationalized to potentially build students who are spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and socially mature.

Discrepancy in Educational Materials between Higher Education Institutions and the Requirements of the Professional Workforce in the Job Market

The rise of ICT specialists in the computer field due to Industry 4.0 is notable, particularly in Indonesia's e-commerce and technology-driven markets. This study explores the demand for qualified informatics engineering professionals, focusing on their ICT and English language skills. Employing a qualitative phenomenological case study design, the research gathered data through semi-structured interviews with informatics engineering specialists and employers. It also scrutinized an English lesson program at a polytechnic in Indonesia through interviews with key figures and document analysis. The study identifies two key findings: demand emphasizes the critical role of reading skills, especially in programming languages and technology documentation, while supply reveals a gap between higher education materials and workplace requirements. The curriculum appears to neglect English proficiency, hindering graduates' performance. Consequently, the study advocates for higher education reform, urging institutions to align their programs with industry demands. Collaboration between government, universities, and industry stakeholders, especially at the regional level, is proposed to bridge the gap and enhance the preparedness of informatics engineering graduates for the evolving industry landscape. The findings underscore the importance of creativity and originality in technology creation, urging institutions to adapt swiftly to the dynamic informatics engineering landscape.

Impact of Gamification Applications on Students’ Attitudes towards Lesson and Procrastination Behaviors

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of foreign language teaching with gamification applications at primary school. In this research, embedded design, which is one of the mixed methods in which quantitative and qualitative methods are used together, has been adopted. The study group of this research is comprised of 33 students from 4th grade at a primary school. Research data were collected through attitude scale for English lesson in primary school, homework, follow-up chart and semi-structured interview. The data of the scale were subjected to inferential statistics, the data of the chart was subjected to descriptive statistics and the data of the interview was subjected to content analysis. According to the findings of the study, the gamification applications significantly increase the attitude of primary school students and have a positive effect on procrastination behaviors. In addition, primary school students have positive evaluations about these applications as making the learning process fun, increasing their curiosity to learn, the participation in the lesson and the desire to be successful. In line with these results of the research, it is recommended to use gamification applications in education for effective teaching.

A Review of Intended Learning Outcomes of English Lessons and Learning Motivation

This study uses a descriptive narrative approach to critically analyze the evidence and findings from the recently published literature. The results indicate that explicitly stating the Intended Learning Outcomes and planning are essential for practical English Language Teaching and Learning and are critical for effective English Language Learning. Findings suggest that adopting specific instructional strategies such as graphic organizers that record what students know, what they want to know, and what they have learned significantly improves communicating Intended Learning Outcomes to students and, thereby, activating their schema for language acquisition and cognitive and affective engagement in learning. The study recommends further conducting a systematic scoping review providing suggested strategies that improve students’ engagement in the assessment process. It also provides an overview of learning motivation theories and highlights their direct bearing on achieving Intended Learning Outcomes during the learning process.

Çevrimiçi İngilizce Öğretimi ile Web 2.0 Araçlarının Öğrencilerin Tutum ve Başarısı Üzerindeki Etkisi

This study investigates how Web 2.0 tools affect students' academic achievement and attitudes regarding learning English in distance courses. An experimental design with pre and post-tests was used in the study. The participants were divided into groups based on the equality of their pre-test scores in terms of the dependent variable of the study, English language course achievement. Accordingly, while Web 2.0 tools were the independent variables, academic success and attitudes towards the English lesson Dreams theme were the dependent variables of this research. A total of 24 seventh-grade students (12 in the experiment group and 12 in the control group) participated in this study from a secondary school in Samsun, Black Sea Region. Both groups received instruction via distance education in English because of the global impact of COVID-19. The experimental group used Web 2.0 tools during lessons, while the control group used the English language curriculum without using these tools. The achievement test was conducted as a pre and post-test for the experimental and control groups. Additionally, data on attitudes were collected from the experimental group using the Middle School English Course Attitude Scale. It was found that the academic achievement scores of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group. Comparatively to the pre-test, the attitudes of experimental group students towards English language instruction have also improved. The findings of these studies provide suggestions for using Web 2.0 tools for teaching English in distance education. The integration and effective use of Web 2.0 tools facilitates teaching-learning processes and contributes significantly to the students' enthusiasm for the lesson, active participation, and success.

Enhancing critical thinking and English-speaking skills of gifted students through philosophy for children approach

This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of "Philosophy for Children (P4C)" approach on the critical thinking and English-speaking skills of twenty-three 7th grade gifted students learning English as a foreign language at a Science and Art Center (SAC) in the city of Denizli, Türkiye. In the study a mixed methods research design was adopted with the participation of randomly assigned experimental and control groups. While quantitative data were collected through the Cornell Critical Thinking Test (CCTT) X level and the Cambridge English Speaking Test (A2 level for Schools), qualitative data were collected through reflective diaries written by the experimental group participants and evaluation forms. While the control group followed the usual SAC English speaking lessons, English speaking lessons for the experimental group were based on the P4C approach. According to the quantitative data findings, there was an increase in the scores of both groups in terms of speaking skills in English, however this difference was not statistically significant. In terms of critical-thinking skills, there was a slight decrease between the pre-test and post-test scores of the control group and an increase in the scores of the experimental group and this difference was statistically significant. In addition, the qualitative data revealed that the experimental group participants generally provided positive feedback on P4C practices and speaking lessons based on the P4C approach created positive effects on their critical thinking and speaking skills in English, while such an application did not create a significant effect on their speaking skills in English.

EFL Higher Vocational Students’ Motivational Regulation and Learner Autonomy in Online Learning Context in China

Successful online learners must continue to be motivated to learn. The aim of this study was to scrutinize how non-English higher vocational students used learner autonomy and motivational controlling strategies when learning English online. 356 Chinese higher vocational students from a public higher vocational college in the northeast of China served as the study's subjects. A single questionnaire was used to collect information. To control their motivation for online English learning, the participants were discovered to have adopted five different sorts of tactics, however, they used in middle level. Additionally, it was shown that when attending online English lessons, students had a certain amount of learner autonomy. Additionally, in the web-based learning environment, there were significant correlations between students' usage of motivational management tools and their learner autonomy.

The Importance Of Instruction-Giving To Better Students’ Performance Of Class Activities In English Lessons

Making sure that pupils in an EFL classroom understand the procedure of how to do an activity has always been a vital topic in the teaching field. Confusion and misunderstanding have to be contended with many different resources such as the so-called ICQs (Instruction Checking Questions). There has not been much information regarding the theme stated. That is why a necessity to study it was one of my main objectives since teachers have to be informed how to do it and the steps to consider. Surveys were conducted to a small population of fifteen teachers that currently work at Centro de Educación Continua in Universidad Técnica de Machala. The survey results obtained showed that most of the respondents are acquainted with instruction-giving; nevertheless, they feel they are not doing a good job in their classes. That is why it is recommendable to read this article and find out how to make the best of an English class.

Using Local and Global Phenomena in Teaching Global Citizenship Education in English at the Elementary Level

This study aimed to enrich Grade 6 English lessons with GCED using local and global issues in the GCED integration in the lessons. Conducted in a public school in the Philippines during the school year 2019-2020, the study used the descriptive method and triangulation method and data sources triangulation. The specific objectives of the study are: (1) Identify phenomena suggested for GCED-enriched Grade 6 English lessons; (2) Develop GCED-enriched lessons in Grade 6 English using a phenomenon-based learning approach; (3) Identify the teaching strategies used in the GCED integration; and (4) Identify the teacher's insights based on his experiences in implementing the lessons. Methods for data collection were documentary analysis of the phenomenon-based GCED-enriched Grade 6 lessons, focus group discussion, workshop, in-depth individual interviews (IDI), analysis of teacher’s reflection notes, and class observations. The suggested phenomena consisted of local and global issues focusing on environmental and climate change, gender and development, identity and diversity, government and politics, and peace and conflict. The grade 6 English lessons can be easily integrated with GCED using local and global phenomena. Varied strategies that are aligned with phenomenon-based learning and active learning can be used for teaching English enriched with GCED. The teacher's insights on the teaching of GCED in Grade 6 English lessons using local and global phenomena can serve as a useful and practical guide in the design and implementation of GCED-enriched lessons. Implementing a whole-school approach to embracing GCED and action options to promote GCED in instructional practices are recommended.

Enriching High School English Lessons with Global Citizenship Education Using Phenomenon-based Learning

This study aimed to develop and validate the Grade 7 English lessons with GCED using phenomenon-based learning (PhenoBL). The local and global phenomena were used in the GCED integration in the lessons. Conducted in a public school in the Philippines during the school year 2019-2020 using the descriptive method and documentary analysis, this study specifically developed a curriculum guide for mainstreaming GCED in Grade 7 English, developed sample phenomenon-based GCED-enriched Grade 7 English lessons, and assessed and analyzed these sample lessons. Data gathering strategies included focus group discussion, a workshop on developing the lessons, collaborative critiquing of the lessons, assessing the lessons by validators, and analysis of the final lessons. A validated researcher-made rubric was used to assess the lessons in terms of appropriateness of GCED integration, relevance to the curriculum, flexibility of GCED integration, and significance of the theme, both the GCED integrated and the phenomenon or phenomena focused in the lesson. Findings indicate that the proposed curriculum guide for the mainstreaming of GCED in Grade 7 English lessons using a phenomenon-based learning approach is highly acceptable while the proposed phenomenon-based GCED-enriched Grade 7 lessons are very good instructional resources for teaching about and for global citizenship. The validators’ feedback improved the phenomenon-based GCED-enriched Grade 7 English lessons. Critical themes and local and global phenomena covered in the lessons are helpful in emphasizing GCED. Recommendations to disseminate and utilize the validated phenomenon-based GCED-enriched lessons and conduct a study to determine the effectiveness of the lessons are forwarded.

Development of communication skills through the introduction of interactive teaching methods in English lessons

The relevance of the study is due to the need for new educational programmes that will diversify the educational process and increase the effectiveness of language knowledge in live communication. The purpose of the study is to examine the main aspects of using interactive teaching methods in English lessons, considering the development of students’ communication skills. The following methods were used in the study: analytical, synthetic, comparative and comparative, which allowed delving into the theoretical aspects of using interactive teaching methods; observation and generalisation of experience, which became the main ones for this study, since their use considered the main positive phenomena in the field of interactive learning in recent years; the analysis was also used to assess the development of communication skills in the process of learning a language. The analysis of the main methods (project creation, interactive, and role-playing games, discussions) and forms of work that can be used in English lessons to develop communication skills is conducted. An assessment of its effectiveness in the application of communication skills has been added to the characteristics of each of the methods. Conclusions on the effectiveness of interactive methods are drawn, considering the age and level of knowledge of students. The basics of implementing interactive learning in an English lesson, in particular, communication between participants in the educational process (student – teacher – student), are considered. The expediency of using various online applications in mastering a foreign language in the classroom and outside of school hours is justified. The results of the study are compared with the results of other studies on this subject related to communication processes in English lessons and interactive learning. The study can be used to further investigate the impact of interactive methods on different student classrooms, for example, during experiments (conducting surveys and questionnaires), considering key educational issues related to the development and implementation of new curricula.

Japanese female English learners’ two-stage learning from Filipino and Western English teachers to acquire “accent-free” English

This study conducted a questionnaire survey with 100 Japanese women who have taken English lessons in two formats, online and in-person, taught by both Filipino and Western English teachers whose different advantages are featured in Japan's English teaching industry. Analyzing their decisions on what types and modes of lessons to take at which learning stage and why, the study discusses how both expected and unexpected learning patterns and reasonings pertain to global issues of (1) the hierarchical diversification in the global English teacher labor market and (2) the privilege/marginalization of Japanese/Filipino women in the world of neoliberal learning/teaching of English as a tool for upward mobility.

Online remote ESL education challenges, opportunities and readiness among high school students during school closure

The COVID-19 outbreak caused mass school closure, pushing teachers and students into online remote education and forcing them to adapt to unfamiliar pedagogical norms. Drawing on Koole’s (2009) Framework for the Rational Analysis of Mobile Education (FRAME) model, this study explored the challenges and opportunities of online remote ESL learning as experienced by four selected high school students from urban and rural Sarawak, Malaysia. It also explored the extent of their readiness for online remote ESL education one year into school closure. This study employed a multiple case study approach which included observations, document analysis and in-depth interviews of participants from multiple demographic categories. Findings discovered challenges that affected the students’ online remote ESL learning experience included the teacher’s physical absence, lack of engagement during lessons and unfavourable learning conditions. Online remote ESL learning also presented students with educational opportunities, particularly independent learning, online social learning and skills development. Findings suggested that urban students were ready, capable and equipped for online remote ESL learning whereas rural students were not as urban students had better digital resources, higher digital competency, sturdier support system, robust modes of instruction for online remote English lessons and higher language proficiency. This study concluded that individual characteristics of students, digital resources, language proficiency and appropriate learning environments play essential roles in supporting online remote ESL learning. Therefore, this study holds a significant theoretical implication for ESL education and the construct of Koole’s FRAME as it validates that when aspects related to the learner, device and social interactions in online remote learning are fulfilled, it can result in an ideal online remote learning experience.

Innovation in the teaching and learning of English for Physical Education Department

The model of teaching English in the university setting tends to be taught conventionally, focusing on grammar tasks as what students have always previously encountered since secondary school. It then turns out that such a model of teaching and learning English rarely prepares students for what they genuinely need in the context of higher education and the future world of the workplace strongly related to their chosen program stream of study. This article is a pilot study, presenting an innovation in the model of teaching and learning English to university students majoring specifically in the Physical and Sport Education study program. By innovation in the design of the teaching and learning practices of English to students of physical and sports education study program, this article provides an example of how English lesson has been adjusted according to the need and what is genuinely needed by the students of physical education as the object of this study. It is fully expected that this study could open a new paradigm in English teaching and learning practices for university students majoring outside the English study program.

Application of Partial Differential Equation Models in English Reading Corpus

Abstract In order to understand the application of partial differential equation models, a study in English reading corpus is proposed. In this study, a quasi-experimental research method was used to select two classes of students in a school as the subjects. The two classes were taught by the same English teacher, and the two classes were comparable in terms of their basic English learning (including reading ability). The total number of English lessons per semester in the two classes was 96, including 32 reading lessons. Students were guided to apply corpus-assisted reading in the reading classes of the experimental class, while the traditional reading teaching method was used in the control class. The corpus-assisted reading method was used in the experimental class for 16 lessons. During the experiment, students’ performances in applying the corpus-assisted reading were observed, their thinking maps in class and after class assignments were collected and analyzed, and their reading scores in the midterm and final exams were used as indicators of the effectiveness of the corpus to compare and analyze the experimental and control classes. It was from the study results found that teachers were able to apply the corpus to assist reading instruction in the English reading process, and students’ application of the corpus in the reading process enhanced their participation and interest in reading lessons. The application of the corpus improved students’ higher-order reading reasoning skills, and students learned to think actively and holistically through corpus mapping.
