The effects of immersive virtual reality field trips upon student academic achievement, cognitive load, and multimodal presence in a social studies educational context

AbstractThere is increasing educational interest in immersive virtual reality (IVR) applications which aid student learning and performance. However, few empirical studies have investigated the potential for implementing the technology in middle-school social studies classrooms. This study employed a quasi-experimental approach to address this issue, using pre- and post-test evaluations to measure academic achievement, and questionnaires to examine cognitive load and sense-of-presence. 48 seventh-grade students participated, split evenly between experimental and control groups. The experimental group received a systematic set of IVR-based social studies lessons via Head-Mounted Displays, while the control group covered identical content conventionally. Experimental group participants attained higher academic achievement with lower cognitive loading than control group students. The experimental group also experienced high levels of multimodal presence (physical, social, and self). This study yielded empirical evidence demonstrating the potential benefits which IVR offers social studies education. Furthermore, it provides an example for how effective, IVR-based social studies lessons can be developed.

Humanizing History: Using Historical Fiction Texts to Develop Disciplinary and Racial Literacies

AbstractHistorical fiction is a powerful genre for inviting children into meaningful conversations centered on the lived experiences of others. Historical inquiry immerses readers in interdisciplinary research experiences and complements language arts Common Core State Standards that call for a balance of fiction and non‐fiction text. Antiracist lenses enhance inquiry conversations and help students articulate nuanced understandings of the fictionalized historical events while developing disciplinary and racial literacy knowledge necessary for humanizing history. This article highlights how we, as teacher educators, use historical fiction to engage teacher candidates in inquiry‐based social studies lessons to develop their disciplinary and racial literacy skills and practices. Then, we offer an example of how to integrate the C3 inquiry approach using Finding Langston (Cline‐Ransome, 2018), a historical fiction text set during the Great Migration, to engage elementary‐aged readers in explorations of history, sparking children’s agency and engagement in their own learning.

Penggunaan Metode Field Trip Terhadap Hasil Belajar IPS Kelas IV MI Thalabul Khair Kabupaten Banjar

Basically, the process carried out consciously by a person to produce change is known as learning behavior and developing positive abilities. One way to facilitate teachers' ability to educate students and achieve learning goals is to use methods. This research aims to determine how field trip learning can improve academic achievement and obtain a significant relationship between student academic achievement and the MI Thalabul Khair field trip learning approach, Banjar Regency. This study uses a quantitative research design. With this design, there is every sample has two classes: a control class and an experimental class. totaling 14 students. Test questions data is gathered by observation, interviews, and documentation, among other techniques. Analyzing the collected data uses hypothesis testing, prerequisite test analysis, and descriptive analysis. This research obtained results, learning through field trips in class IV regarding the surrounding environment in social studies lessons can improve students' academic scores, and social studies learning outcomes are positively correlated utilizing the field trip instructional approach. In accordance with the difference between the control class's average score of 66.42 and the average score of the experimental class of 90.71. The field trip learning method also adds new experiences and enthusiasm to students during the process of learning.

A Low-Career Elementary Teacher’s Paradigmatic Shift Experience in Lesson Discussion through Cognitive Coaching

This study explored the process of cognitive coaching in relation to social studies lessons for a low-career elementary teacher. The purpose was to scrutinize the procedures and principles followed by the coach and the teacher and to identify changes in the teacher’s instructional and curricular expertise. During the coaching, the coach utilized mediational tools such as paralanguage, response behaviors, and mediative questioning to facilitate the teacher's self-directed learning process. Consequently, the teacher experienced autonomy in lesson discussions. Reflecting on lesson planning, she recognized the necessity of reading children's books and the need to restructure units. She established goals to enhance her teaching expertise, expressed a willingness to explore self-reflection methods, and hoped to improve her use of mediational tools.
 Over a span of 7 months, data were collected from the coach and the teacher. The data collection included pre-coaching open-ended survey responses, transcripts of coaching dialogue over two cycles, and open-ended survey responses from a mid-term evaluation. Additionally, instructional plans for the teacher's 6th-grade social studies class were gathered. These data were analyzed using the constant comparative method, and a validation process was conducted for the results. As recommendations, a paradigm shift focusing on teachers' thinking in lesson discussions, establishing a culture where observers mediate teachers' internal thoughts in a non-judgmental manner, reevaluation of mandatory classroom observations, providing coaching related to individual teachers' lessons within the learning community, concurrent emphasis on personal reflective thinking and sharing and discussing experiences and knowledge within the learning community, fostering collaboration between teacher training institutions and educational authorities for developing and expanding cognitive coaching training programs, and coupling training for the enhancement of instructional expertise and curricular expertise were suggested. Further studies were proposed.

Systematic Literature Review: Penggunaan Metode Talking Stick Dalam Meningkatkan Hasil Belajar IPS di SMP

Education creates people who are civilized, intelligent, sensible, and virtuous so they can face the problems that exist in life. Educational success is influenced by several factors such as curriculum, students, teachers, school environment, and so on. The true learning process must be able to activate students, not just focus on the teacher. Students must be made the center of learning, meaning students must be actively involved in the learning process from beginning to end. In order for this to happen, teachers can carry out social studies learning by implementing the speaking stick learning method so that the class becomes active and students easily understand the material. The aim of this research is to identify the application of the speaking stick learning method to student learning outcomes in social studies lessons. This research uses the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method to find the necessary data related to the research topic. The data that researchers obtained was based on secondary data sources originating from previous research articles. Based on a literature review, the author obtains an overview of the benefits and results obtained from implementing the speaking stick method in social studies learning, starting from increasing student learning activities and at the end of this learning, it is able to make students maximize their abilities and understanding so that there is an increase in social studies learning outcomes for students.

Exploring Hurdles in Elevating Social Studies Education: Unravelling the Assessment Conundrum at St. Peters ‘B’ Junior High School

The study sought to examine the challenges facing assessment techniques in the teaching Social Studies in Nsoatere Community JHS in. The research design selected for the study was descriptive survey. The data collection was questionnaire. The population for the study consisted of Social Studies teachers. A population of 15 were all included in the study through census method. The key findings of the study according to the specific objectives were: Social Studies teachers practice formative assessment, insufficient time for assessment is the major challenge facing Social Studies teachers and students are unable to realise their mistakes due to absence of feedback. From the finding these conclusions were made according to the specific objectives: teachers focused on the type of assessment that leads to clarification and modification of teaching methods, insufficient time for assessment prevents Social Studies teachers from using appropriate assessment procedures and tools for conducting good assessment and teacher’s assessment and evaluation procedures in Social Studies in the JHS are not valid and reliable. These recommendations were made: Social Studies teachers at the JHS should also consider the other types of assessment procedures, heads of schools are to make sure Social Studies lessons are given more ample time to aid assessment in the subject and Social Studies teachers should make sure any assessment and evaluation procedures and tools used in Social Studies in the Junior High School are valid and reliable as they promote feedback.

Bunun sağlanabilmesi için ise çağdaş eğitim sisteminde disiplinler arası yaklaşım oldukça önemsenmektedir. Bu çalışmada ilkokul 4. sınıf sosyal bilgiler dersi kazanımları ile ders kitabı konularının ilkokul matematik dersi kazanımları açısından incelenmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Çalışmada 2018 yılı sosyal bilgiler dersi öğretim programında bulunan 4. sınıf kazanımları ve 4. sınıf sosyal bilgiler ders kitabı konularının ilkokul 1-4. sınıf matematik dersi kazanımları ile ilişkili olup olmama durumları karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmiştir. Bu amaçla çalışmada nitel araştırma paradigmalarından doküman incelemesi işe koşulmuştur. Çalışma verilerini Millî Eğitim Bakanlığınca yayınlanan 2018 ilkokul sosyal bilgiler dersi öğretim programı, 2018 ilkokul matematik dersi öğretim programı, 4. sınıf sosyal bilgiler ders kitabı oluşturmuştur. Çalışma sonucunda 2018 sosyal bilgiler öğretim programında bulunan kazanımlar ilkokul matematik dersi kazanımları ile ilişkisi incelendiğinde en çok ilişkinin “üretim, dağıtım ve tüketim” öğrenme alanında olduğu tespit edilirken en az ilişkinin ise “küresel bağlantılar” öğrenme alanında olduğu tespit edilmiştir. 2018 4. sınıf sosyal bilgiler ders kitabı konuları ilkokul matematik dersi kazanımları ile ilişkisi incelendiğinde en çok ilişkinin “Üretimden Tüketime” ünitesinde olduğu belirlenirken en az ilişkinin “İnsanlar ve Yönetim” ünitesinde olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

Efficacy of Formative Assessment Practices in Social Studies Instructions: A Case Study of Holy Child College of Education in Ghana

Assessment has become the foundation of all levels of education. This study aimed to examine the efficacy of formative assessment practices in Social Studies instructions at Holy Child College of Education in the Western Region of Ghana. A qualitative approach and a case study research design were adopted for this study. The case study focused on the teacher-trainee's views and roles of formative assessment in the teaching and learning process in Social Studies lessons. The population for this study included all seventy-five (75) final-year teacher-trainees offering a general programme for a Bachelor of Education in Social Studies in the Holy Child College of Education in the Western Region of Ghana. Purposive and convenience sampling techniques were used to select the College of Education and participants for the study. A purposive sampling technique was used to sample the college and municipality in the Western Region. Twenty (20) teacher trainees on teaching practice were conveniently sampled for the study. A semi-structured interview guide was the main tool used in data collection. The data was analysed using the interpretative technique based on the themes arrived at during the data collection. It was revealed that assessment for learning is a gradual engagement that takes place endlessly throughout ongoing classroom learning activities to offer immediate feedback for assessors and assesses to close the gap identified in the ongoing learning situation. Therefore, mentoring institutions like the University of Education, Winneba, University of Cape Coast and others should collaborate with the Ghana Teacher Education Commission to organise continuous professional development for colleges of education teachers on efficacy and implementation of formative assessment.

Implementation of Brainstorming Method to Improve Social Studies Learning Achievement of Grade VIII Junior High School Students

This research is motivated by the observation data that the researchers did that social studies learning is still low in achievement because it is not appropriate to choose the method in conveying the material. Learning using the brainstorming method, which was carried out at SMP "Empat Lima" Karanggeneng Lamongan, was assessed as being able to improve learning achievement. The goal is to know the steps, supporting factors, accelerating factors, and the impact of applying the brainstorming method. The method used is the descriptive qualitative method. Data collection techniques are using interviews, documentation and observation. The benefit of research is that students can improve their achievement. Students can convey ideas and new solutions according to the material, which can increase self-confidence. The research was conducted at SMP "Empat Lima" Karanggeneng Lamongan in class VIII with a total of 17 students. The brainstorming method is a method in which students are trained to be able to provide opinions and solutions, and students are given breadth without any criticism or objection. This brainstorming method is suitable for use in social studies lessons, especially at the junior high school level. The brainstorming method can improve learning achievement because students can obtain new information and knowledge from seeking references so that students can think creatively and innovatively, and it can also increase students' self-confidence. The steps of the brainstorming method properly and correctly can increase student achievement. Learning the brainstorming method also has supporting factors, boosters and a positive impact on students.

SEJARI PADLET (Semangat Belajar IPS dengan Padlet) which is carried out on grade 6 students at Karangasem State Elementary School aims to increase students' enthusiasm or interest in learning. Padlet application as a container for sharing learning materials from teachers. Students independently explore the features of the Padlet application which has been filled in with learning material by the teacher. Students do not need to download the application but simply open the link. The Padlet application can be opened at any time so students can study the material again in sequence. Best practice has been implemented by applying the learning by doing method in several stages. The first stage is the preparation stage, the second stage is training, the third stage is the implementation of the learning process. The results of questionnaire analysis and observations during social studies learning before and after using the Padlet application increased by 42.8% to 86.8% from 44% before learning using the Padlet application. Previously, only around 4 students out of 9 students showed interest in taking part in social studies lessons. After using the Padlet application, around 8 out of 9 students have shown interest in taking part in social studies learning. The average student learning outcomes also increased by 13.75 to 90 from the previous 76.25. All student learning outcomes are above or equal to the KKM, meaning students understand the lesson material more easily. From these data it can be concluded that the Padlet application is able to increase students' enthusiasm and interest in learning social studies.

This research employs a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses, to explore factors supporting incorporating social values into curriculums and teaching strategies. Lessons in Islamic studies and social studies are delivered experientially and contextually, influencing students' social attitudes toward diversity, including tolerance, patriotism, respect, and sympathy. The findings highlight the comprehensive impact of this integrated approach on shaping students' perspectives.

Investigation of Secondary School Students' Respect for Differences in the Framework of Social Studies Lesson

Bu çalışmanın amacı Sosyal Bilgiler dersi çerçevesinde ortaokul öğrencilerinin farklılıklara saygı durumlarını bazı değişkenler (cinsiyet, sınıf, anne eğitim durumu, baba eğitim durumu, aile ortalama gelir düzeyi) açısından incelemektir. Araştırma 2021-2022 eğitim öğretim bahar yarıyılında Ağrı ilinin Patnos ilçe sınırları içerisinde yer alan bir devlet ortaokulunun farklı sınıf düzeylerinde öğrenim gören 112 öğrenci ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmada tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak Öksüz ve Güven (2012) tarafından geliştirilen “Farklılıklara Saygı Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen veriler SPSS 22. istatistik programı kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmadan elde edilen bulgular incelendiğinde ortaokul öğrencilerinin farklılıklara saygı durumlarının “cinsiyet, sınıf, anne eğitim durumu, baba eğitim durumu, aile ortalama gelir düzeyi” değişkenlerine göre istatistiksel açıdan anlamlı bir farklılaşmaya yol açmadığı görülmüştür. Bununla birlikte ortaokul öğrencilerinin farklılıklara saygı düzeylerinin genel ortalamasının düşük olduğu tespit edilmiştir.

Eliminating student misconceptions regarding the unit, Adventure of Democracy, in sixth grade social studies lessons

Misconceptions are judgments formed in the mind of an individual about a concept that contradicts scientific principles. Identifying and correcting existing misconceptions in students’ minds is an important part of education. To help students properly grasp the concepts covered in the curriculum, any existing misconceptions should be identified and eliminated first, which will ensure that they will better learn the concepts that they encounter in the future. Adopting an action research design, we aimed to examine whether the misconceptions of 6th grade students regarding the study unit, The Adventure of Democracy, have been resolved. The study group consisted of 24 students in classes 6/A and 6/B at the Havuz Secondary School in the Kangal district of the Sivas province of Turkey in the 2017/2018 academic year. Certain methods were used to produce activities aimed at teaching concepts and eliminating misconceptions – audio recordings and field notes were used as the data collection tools. The data were analysed through descriptive analysis. The analysis revealed that the action research activities were effective in teaching the targeted concepts and eliminating the misconceptions held by students.

Determinants of Social Studies Curriculum Implementation by Teachers with Intellectual Disabilities in Selected Schools of Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria: Implication for Psychology

Teachers with intellectual disabilities frequently have cognitive processing or perceptual problems. Visual processing problems interfere with understanding text, illustrations, and written work associated with a social studies lesson. Most social studies textbooks include many maps and graphs. For most teachers, these maps clarify the topics covered and those that should be covered as well; however, teachers with visual-spatial and visual-processing disorders may have difficulty interpreting such information. Hence, this study evaluated the factors that affected how the social studies curriculum was implemented by teachers with intellectual disabilities in a sample of schools in the Cross River State, Nigeria, Calabar South Local Government Area; implications for psychology. Two survey factors have been developed to guide the study. The variables under review were used to guide the literature review. The survey study's template was employed. Purposeful selection approaches were used to choose the 60 respondents that made up the study's sample. A structured questionnaire with 10 items and a four-point Likert scale was used to collect the results. Using the Cronbach Alpha reliability method, the instrument's approximate correlation was 0.78. The data was examined using a descriptive methodology. The findings of the study indicated that a teacher's teaching style and level of training among teachers with intellectual disabilities had an impact on how they instruct students in social studies. It was suggested that secondary school teachers with disabilities be given the opportunity to participate in curriculum development and implementation so that they can use student-centered methods in teaching.

The Effect of Active Learning Methods on Middle School Students’ Entrepreneurship Skills in Social Studies Course

This research aimed to determine the effect of active learning methods on middle school students' entrepreneurship skills in social studies lessons. A mixed method experimental design was adopted in the research. The research study group consisted of 59 middle school students, 29 of whom were in the experimental group and 30 in the control group. A multilevel mixed-method sampling strategy was used to determine the study group. In the research, Entrepreneurship Scale for Middle School Students, semi-structured interviews, anecdotal records, and a checklist were used as data collection tools. In order to determine the effectiveness of active learning methods, one-way covariance analysis, in which the pre-test scores were determined as the covariate, was employed between the post-test scores of the experimental and control groups. The inductive analysis approach was adopted in the analysis of qualitative data. It was found that the active learning methods had a significant and positive effect on the experimental group. The students stated that the active learning methods applied in the social studies lessons contributed to developing their entrepreneurial skills, establishing a competitive environment among the students and the group work opportunity. Furthermore, the students found active learning methods fun and instructive, increasing participation and motivation for the lesson.
