Middle-Aged People’s Lifestyles and Preferred Characteristics of a Welfare House for the Aged

The purposes of this study are to investigate the differences in the preferred characteristics of a welfare house for the aged according to the lifestyle types of the middle class middle-aged. The preferred characteristics of the residential environment for a welfare house for the aged are categorized into preferred physical characteristics, preferred service & program characteristics, preferred management characteristics. This study conducted an online web-survey targeting the middle class middle-aged in 40-59 as potential consumers of welfare housing for the elderly, residing in the capital area, and six major metropolitan cities, during October, 2019. The data was collected from total 308 subjects, and the data analysis was conducted with the use of factor analysis, cluster analysis, Chi-square test (χ<SUP>2</SUP>), and one-way ANOVA. This study has conclusions as follows; 1) The middle-aged middle class preferred store, sauna, physiotherapy clinic, and trail among common-use spaces. In the provision of services, it would be needed to provide more various services such as basic emergency management & nursing service, and cleaning & laundry service. Regarding the programs, they preferred the horticulture, vegetable gardening, swimming, and learning musical instruments. 2) Lifestyles were classified into ‘Fashion·creativity-type’, ‘Achievement·creativity-type’, ‘Passive-type’ and ‘Leader-type’. In the preferred characteristics of welfare house for the aged in accordance with the types of lifestyle. Overall, the ‘Fashion·creativity-type’ preferred such leisure space and program compared to other groups while the ‘Leader-type’ relatively less preferred such leisure space and program than other groups.

Reading Rules

This article examines how builders and users contested the cultural, political, and social mission and meaning of the Hà Nội Central Library [Bibliothèque centrale de Hanoi] from 1919 to 1941. I argue that the central library was not just a symbol of Western modernity, but a public space in which modern practices were defied and defined by Vietnamese students, urban readers, and administrators. Library readers freely accessed diverse print matter, practiced self-directed learning, and created a social space for study, research, and leisure. Through this historical study, I reveal how the library was a contested colonial institution and a formative space of urban social life.

Citizens' preferences and attitudes towards urban waterfront spaces: a case study of Qiantang riverside development.

Many cities are facing various environmental problems, where performance-based planning and nature-based solutions have been proposed to address such problems. As a natural landscape in the city, urban waterfront space has efficient ecological benefits, high-quality landscape vision and environment, and it is an important carrier of citizens’ activities. However, existing studies have mainly focused on coping with environmental problems, while social functions and strategies have been neglected. Therefore, this study aims to fill such research gaps by understanding the social performance of urban waterfront spaces. Field observation and questionnaire survey were conducted in a famous urban waterfront space, Qiantang riverside walkway, in Hangzhou, China. The results indicate that the Qiantang riverside walkway serves as a space for tourism, leisure and entertainment, as the visitors who lived more than 5 km away from here accounted for about 50% and the local people also accounted for about 50%. People’s activities exhibited significantly temporal differences, where the occupation of the Qiantang riverside walkway reached a peak at night. For the people who lived far from here, they mainly depended on self-driving, which led to two critical problems relevant to transport linkage with the city and parking lot. Results also indicate that the landscape, supporting facilities and road functions could perform well among the mind of 102 respondents. However, public service and main facilities should be improved to meet more people’s requirements. Moreover, importantly, the results indicate the phenomenon of stratification and agglomeration so that the similar aspects (e.g. rest seat quantity, rest seat style) could be merged into the same cluster (e.g. rest seat) for consideration in the urban waterfront space planning and design. This study also generates some implications for the renovation of urban waterfront spaces. Overall, this study provides people with basic understanding of the social performance of existing urban waterfront spaces, which can further promote urban planners and designers to comprehensively build sustainable, resilient and healthy water-based living environments.

Lazer em Altamira-PA e as transformações após a construção da Usina Hidrelétrica de Belo Monte

Esta pesquisa investigou as manifestações do lazer na cidade de Altamira-PA, considerando as transformações urbanas advindas da implementação da Usina Hidrelétrica “Belo Monte” (UHBM). De maneira geral, descreveu-se as principais práticas de lazer existentes na cidade de Altamira, considerando a relevância da implementação da UHBM como evento indutor de um considerável reordenamento na lógica da (re)produção dos espaços de lazer. As entrevistas abertas e a observação participante constituíram-se em estratégias metodológicas dessa pesquisa, na medida em que possibilitaram uma melhor compreensão da realidade do lazer de Altamira. Os resultados evidenciaram um forte processo de (re)definição dos espaços de lazer, caracterizados pela ação de agentes, instituições, Estado, e dos sujeitos residentes na cidade. A realidade emergente evidencia uma nova dinâmica dos espaços e das mútiplas práticas de lazer no advento da UHBM. Tem destaque nesse cenário, a emergência de novos arranjos na “territorialidade do lazer”, caracterizados pelas novas formas estabelecidas pelos sujeitos, destacando-se o aumento dos espaços privados de lazer em comparação aos públicos.&#x0D; Palavras-Chave: Lazer, Hidrelétrica Belo Monte, Altamira-PA.

Opportunities for integrating the historical industrial enterprises into the modern urban environment in Rostov-on-Don

Today, historical industrial facilities and their territory, located earlier on the outskirts, industrial enterprises with the growth and development of cities, were included in their architectural and planning structure. There is currently a clear tendency to orient the historical industrial heritage objects to urban public spaces using the re-functionalization methods in the historical industrial heritage reconstruction in our country and foreign design practice. The relevance of the industrial facilities’ reconstruction in Rostov-on-Don is due to the presence of irrationally used urban areas and the need to create the universal modern spaces for work, leisure and entertainment in the central residential quarters of the city. The study examined two industrial heritage sites and presented the design solutions for them.

Gendered Expectations, Gatekeeping, and Consumption in Craft Beer Spaces

While women are drinking more craft beer in the United States, the association between masculinity and beer remains intact. Yet sparse research has considered how involvement in craft beer culture may differ across public and elite beer spaces. Public spaces are open settings such as bars or breweries, and elite settings are more closed settings such as bottle shares and beer clubs. In this article, we analyze a questionnaire of 1,102 craft beer drinkers to compare the ways that men and women gain and enact cultural legitimacy within different craft beer spaces. Our focus on public and elite consumption spaces generates two interconnected insights. First, in public spaces, men are assumed to have a natural basic beer knowledge. Women, however, are dismissed as “not real beer drinkers” through men’s gatekeeping. Second, within elite spaces, both men and women must prove their belonging as elite drinkers and ultimately navigate gatekeeping mechanisms. As a result, our work extends consumption and gender literature by showing how inclusive cultural movements rest on the gendering of contextually specific knowledge and the policing of elite status and prestige in public and elite leisure spaces.

O local e as emoções suscitadas: experiência estética no imaginário urbano de Tubarão, Santa Catarina

Este artigo analisa, a partir do projeto municipal Domingo na Rua, os deslocamentos que estetizam as múltiplas interações com a cidade e sua condição pública, em função das diferentes lógicas de relação com os espaços. Assim, descrevemos a percepção da cidade a partir da experiência de sua apreciação estética, reconhecendo marcas das interpretações das dinâmicas culturais, sociais e ambientais em um exercício de etnografia de rua (ROCHA e ECKERT, 2013). Buscamos perceber se as pessoas que são atraídas pela experiência estética do fechamento da rua percebem a cidade de maneira diferente, expressando a alteração de sentido e simbolização da cidade, já que a rua deixa de ter um fluxo funcional, de comércio e trânsito, para permitir um lugar de vivência popular e integradora do imaginário da cidade. Em última análise esta passa a ser uma experiência que forja o imaginário urbano e é uma prática de educar para a imaginação (contato com a natureza, espaço público de lazer, relações sociais, atividades ao ar livre).

Research on visual behavior characteristics and cognitive evaluation of different types of forest landscape spaces

BackgroundWith the increasing demand for forest tourism and forest leisure space in recent years, providing a high-quality forest landscape space to participants has become an increasingly important topic for designers and managers of forest parks. Main purposeTo clarify differences in the visual behavior characteristics and psychological cognitive evaluation of participants when viewing different types of forest landscape spaces and to explore the relationship between them in order to identify the psychological evaluation factors that affect visual behavior. This analysis will provide a theoretical basis and a basis for the construction and reconstruction of forest park landscape spaces, even for new forests in the future. MethodsThis study used eye-tracking technology and cognitive questionnaires for participants. ANOVA and Spearman's rho correlation analysis in SPSS 23.0 were used to statistically analyze the data. Main results1. There are differences in participants' visual behavior, especially in visual spans, when participants appreciate different types of forest landscape spaces. The visual span of forest waterscape space is small, while the visual span of in-forest landscape space is large. 2. There are differences in participants' psychological cognitive evaluations of different types of forest landscape spaces. The forest waterscape space is evaluated highly on multiple indicators, especially for dynamic water space, whereas for in-forest landscape space, participants also pay attention to unique or interesting landscape elements, with the exception of color and plants. 3. There are correlations between the mean visual span, mean pupil diameter and psychological cognitive evaluation of participants in different types of forest landscape spaces. When people admire scenes with diverse plant species, rich landscape content, good landscape depth and permeability, rich and bright color, open and tidy spaces, and good landscape permeability and layering, their mean pupil diameter and lateral and portrait visual span are small. Based on the above analysis, we recommend that when planning and designing forest landscape space, we should consider not only the characteristics of different types of landscape spaces and their visual and cognitive effects for participants but also the combination of some iconic elements or interesting landscape elements.

Выявление особенностей архитектурной типологии домов престарелых

The article focuses on the study of modern approaches in the typology of nursing homes. Global data on the increase in the share of older people in the total population are presented. In addition, Rosstat data confirm the relevance of studying this topic. Examples of foreign experience in designing and building homes for the elderly show the developed functional composition of the premises, along with the function of accommodation and care - health care, leisure, trade, sports, food and multifunctional spaces to ensure social interaction of different groups of the population. The research reveals a method of "functional improvement" aimed at developing optimal functional interactions between public and residential spaces. A concept project for a "dynamic" scheme has been developed, showing the inclusion of residential blocks in a multifunctional complex. The chosen functional organization allows the creation of private spaces for residents of retirement age and walking areas for visitors to the complex. It is determined that in Russia it is necessary to implement modern approaches adapted to Russian conditions, based on foreign experience. This will enhance the consumer quality of the facility and the comfort level of the elderly, which will undoubtedly provide social interaction through the introduction of educational and leisure functions, as well as improve the ecological and aesthetic qualities of the environment.

Putting Faith in Vinyl, Real Ale, and Live Music: a Case Study Of the Limits of Tourism Policy and a Critical Analysis Of New Leisure Spaces in a Northern English Town

Skipton, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, is an old mill town that has seen tourists flocking to it since the arrival of the railway in the 19th century. Like many other old mill towns in northern England, Skipton has lost those mills-as-factories and the workers in them—and has struggled to retain a sustainable local economy. At the same time, Skipton has become increasingly gentrified, and has become a focus for day visitors and tourists attracted by the beautiful countryside seen when Le Tour de France came through Yorkshire in 2014. In this article, we explore the area of Skipton, dubbed the Canal Quarter. We focus on the leisure spaces that have opened there as attempts to construct alternative, authentic experiences around the consumption of real ale, the performance of live music, and the curation of second-hand vinyl records. We have previously explored how these might be shown to be a space for Habermasian rationality. In this sequel, we use critical theory to show how the alternative, authentic space of vinyl, real ale, and live music has already been compromised by two conflicting hegemonic powers: the cooption of leisure into the economics of tourism and tourism policy, and the meaninglessness of cool capitalism and Bauman's consumer society.

The Implementation of Transit-Oriented Development Concepts on Pedestrian Pathways in the City of Bandung

As a form of urban development, transit-oriented development (TOD) maximizes the amount of residential, business, and leisure space within walking distance of public transport facilities. TOD places more emphasis on design that increases interest in walking, by providing a scale that is appropriate for pedestrians. The Bandung City Government for the period of 2013-2018 has applied TOD in the city of Bandung by building various kinds of public facilities, also restoration and construction of infrastructure to improve the walkability aspect of Bandung. The developments that took place in Bandung then increased its livability, among others through the emergence of various types of thematic parks and various pedestrian infrastructures. The scope of this paper is to critically discuss how TOD was implemented in Bandung mainly through the observation on revitalized pedestrian pathways, while the author’s views on TOD which focused on pedestrian pathways is also formulated. Based on analysis carried out, it was found how TOD, specifically the revitalization of pedestrian pathways, was implemented partially with an emphasis on aesthetic aspects. Furthermore, this study described how Bandung has the potential to exploit pathways within kampung kota in heed of context-based TOD.

Oficinas de cineclube itinerante: compartilhando o cinema brasileiro

Por meio da parceria entre os Projetos “Oficinas Culturais 2018” e “Programa Terceira Idade na Universidade” foram desenvolvidas oficinas de cineclube itinerante com as pessoas idosas. O projeto teve como objetivo promover, a partir das experiências audiovisuais nacionais, o conhecimento da produção do cinema brasileiro, assim como o intercâmbio cultural e a reflexão crítica entre os diferentes costumes, crenças, discursos e valores decorrentes das relações sociais na sociedade brasileira. As oficinas foram organizadas em eixos temáticos, focados na transformação social e empoderamento de idosas e idosos, além de, proporcionar um espaço de lazer recheados de conhecimentos e afetos.

Food contact zones and kitchen politics: migrant domestic helpers in Hong Kong

Making and sharing food plays an essential role in foreign domestic helpers’ work and leisure life. However, this has seldom been addressed in the voluminous migrant domestic helper literature. In Hong Kong, overseas helpers are employed in over three hundred thousand households. This article explores their food experiences in both their leisure and work spaces. It first examines the “contact zones” in which these workers share food with co-ethnics. It then considers the kitchen space in which foreign domestic workers serve their employers. It shows how these domestic helpers make use of their culinary skills to secure better human relationships and gain extra bargaining power through the provision of tasty ethnic dishes. Despite the immense power imbalance between the employer and the domestic helper, such food contact has shed light on the everyday resilience embedded in kitchen politics in Hong Kong.

A Schoolyard to Play

This is an entrepreneurship project that promotes awareness, as its main action is to make the school more appealing. Students have raised this problem and identified the main goal of improving the schoolyard spaces. Problems were surveyed and solutions presented, with the focus of intervention in green spaces, new paintings, and organization of leisure spaces. Contacts were initiated with different stakeholders, for the potential implementation of the solutions found in this project.

LA UTILIZACIÓN DE TABLETS ENTRE PREADOLESCENTES. LOS CASOS DE ZARAGOZA (ESPAÑA) Y PAU (FRANCIA)

This research analyzes the way in which preteens (tweens) in the cities of Zaragoza (Spain) and Pau (France) use tablets, as the first device they make their own in the digital world and how it influences their socialization with their peers. To get to that goal, through a qualitative methodology (in-depth interviews) a total of 22 young people from both cities were investigated. The results show that despite the cultural differences between both countries and cities, the preteens of Zaragoza and Pau express a very similar way to relate and use the tablets, being the level of penetration of this technology very similar in all the cases investigated. However, there are important differences when interpreting the leisure spaces in which they meet their friends.

Everyday Life Construction, Outdoor Activity and Health Practice among Urban Empty Nesters and Their Companion Dogs in Guangzhou, China.

In this paper, we argue that research on the everyday life of older people needs to move beyond anthropocentrism because non-human support contributes to the diversity of their social networks. We elaborate this argument by examining how companion dogs are involved in the urban empty-nest family in Guangzhou (an aging and highly urbanized city in China), the building of multispecies kinships by urban empty nesters in later life and improving the health of urban empty nesters. Participatory observations and 20 in-depth interviews were combined to assess the association between dog ownership and the reconstruction of later life. Specifically, we focus on the co-disciplined pursuit of outdoor activities by urban empty nesters and their companion dogs; this pursuit represents a shared leisure practice that maintains multispecies kinship and is a creative way for older individuals to improve their happiness and physical functioning. This paper provides a relational and reflective understanding of the interaction between the urban empty nesters and companion dogs and the implications of this interaction in the urban leisure space.

Cape Town’s gay village: from “gaytrified” tourism Mecca to “heterosexualised” urban space

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to ascertain the factors that led to Cape Town’s gay village to transform from a “gaytrified” tourism mecca to a “heterosexualised” urban space, from a gay leisure space owner perspective. Design/methodology/approach Empirical observations of the six remaining gay leisure space owners in De Waterkant (population) are taken into account by using semi-structured interviews. All narratives are analysed in Altas.ti – qualitative data analysis software – to identify applicable factors, which participants believe are contributing to the “de-gaying” of Cape Town’s gay village. Findings From the conducted analyses, it becomes apparent that Western theorisation of the “de-gaying” of gay villages is not universally applicable as certain factors contributing to De Waterkant’s demise appear to be location-specific, suggesting that Western theory is insufficient to explain gay spatial realities in non-Western contexts such as South Africa. The identified factors responsible for the “de-gaying” of De Waterkant adversely affect Cape Town’s status as a gay capital and its ability to market this gay neighbourhood to attract the gay tourism market. This may result in lost socio-economic opportunities considering the financial contribution of gay travellers to the local tourist economy. Originality/value This study is the first of its kind to use first-hand narratives of the six remaining gay business owners in De Waterkant and marks the first attempt to investigate the factors, from a non-Western perspective, which led to the “de-gaying” of Africa’s only gay village. Taking into account the socio-economic value added by gay tourism, the findings provide the first non-Western perspective on the demise of Africa’s and South Africa’s only gay neighbourhood from a gay leisure space owner perspective, including the possible repercussions on Cape Town’s local tourist economy. Some tactical considerations and recommendations are suggested to ensure the continuation of gay tourism in the city.

Life is better in flip flops. Digital nomads and their transformational travels to Thailand

Purpose The metamorphosis within the Thai segment of the hospitality industry has influenced the global outlook for hospitality services, shifting the focus from leisure to a hybrid approach of providing all-inclusive work-leisure offerings. The purpose of this paper is, therefore, to outline the hybridisation of the hospitality industry in Thailand that is frequented by digital nomads, and to discuss the adaptation of local infrastructure to accommodate this trend. Design/methodology/approach Taking the form of a research note, this paper assesses the impact that digital nomads are having upon the hospitality industry in Thailand, and describes how different localities have begun to respond to the challenges and opportunities this trend presents. Additionally, the paper proposes an empirical study that would evaluate the success of various types of work–leisure hubs in adapting to the needs of digital nomads, and the alignment of their offerings with the expectations of these travellers. Findings A preliminary review of available resources reveals that there are a variety of work–leisure spaces catering to the needs of digital nomads. These spaces tend to combine lodging accommodations with a shared office environment, incorporating design elements and social activities that are likely to foster interpersonal relationships between guests. Be that as it may, the exact nature of the work–leisure space models behind these environments is unclear. Originality/value The paper envisions a study that will enhance scholarly understanding of the transformation which the Thai hospitality industry is currently undergoing in response to the influx of digital nomads. These insights will enable industry experts to assess both the feasibility and profitability of diverse work-leisure models, and assist policymakers in different jurisdictions.

Some Memoirs of a Male Stripper: The Conflicting Tensions of Disrobing Oneself without Disrobing One’s Self

This autoethnographic paper relives my first working night as a male stripper. The purpose of this paper is to examine my subjectivities as a male stripper by unpacking and theorizing around my autoethnographic writings from working at a private bachelorette party. This paper provides a new perspective in the sex and leisure literature and puts the (male) researcher into the study. It explores the complexities and vulnerabilities entangled within my subjectivities as a male stripper – its construction, deconstruction, and co-construction. Narratives are presented depicting scenes during my first working night from pre-party preparations to post-party reflections. These narratives analyze my desires to be accepted beyond the traditional physicality central to stripping, tensions present within role ambiguity, and the co-consumption of sexuality produced within this sex and leisure space. Critical analysis of my performer perspective advances the understanding of identity co-construction and co-consumption within these sociosexual leisure spaces.

Rail trails literature: Current status and future research

Rail trail developments involve converting disused railway corridors into multi-use spaces for leisure, tourism, and sustainable mobility. The transformation of disused railway corridors into successful rail trail developments in the United States, New Zealand and the United Kingdom has contributed to a resurgence in community, government and business interest in developing rail trails in other countries. As evident from several jurisdictions, rail trail development has the potential to spark debates around fundamental issues related to prudent use of dormant public assets, namely railway corridors. This exploratory systematic review examined peer-reviewed studies of rail trails published in English language academic journals to examine the substance, extent and research gaps of this distinct subset of the broader literature on trails. A fledgling, fragmented body of knowledge was identified, spanning themes from planning, management and user experience to social, economic and environmental impacts of rail trails. Directions for future research are provided.
