Awareness Guide for Female Domestic Workers in Lebanon. What Should I Know?

This guide was prepared by the Institute for Women’s Studies in the Arab World at the Lebanese American University in 2010. It was funded by a grant from the Foundation to Promote Open Society. The content of the guide is based on information compiled by IWSAW and on an ILO publication titled Did You Know? Frequently Asked Questions And Answers About Live-in Domestic Workers In Lebanon (August, 2009).

The Beirut Declaration

A regional conference on "Gender and Communication Policy" in the Middle East and North Africa was jointly organized in Beirut, Lebanon, by the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC) and the Institute for Women's Studies in the Arab World (IWSAW), at the Lebanese American University, from November 9 to November 12, 1999. Nasawiya: A New Faction in the Women’s Movement

This article is extracted from an M.A. thesis entitled “Transnational Activism in Lebanon Women’s Movement: Between Fitna, Fawda, and Feminism” prepared by Sandy El-Hage and submitted as part of the requirements of the Master of Arts in International Affairs at the School of Arts and Sciences, the Lebanese American University. Sexuality

A roundtable discussion on sexuality took place at the Institute for Women’s Studies in the Arab World, Lebanese American University (LAU). Among theparticipants were undergraduate and graduate students from various Lebanese universities. It was moderated by Dr. Marie Therese Kheir Badawi.

Arab Countries in Transition: Gender Rights and Constitutional Reforms

This second issue of Al-Raida consists of papers that were presented at the international conference “Arab Countries in Transition: Gender Rights and Constitutional Reforms” held by the Institute for Women’s Studies in the Arab World (IWSAW) at the Lebanese American University (LAU) in June 2014 and centering on human rights, women’s bodies, power relations, violations and testimonials.

Dr. Lina Abyad: Theater

Lina Abyad, Professor of Theater Arts at the Lebanese American University and Director of the recent production, The Royal Pardon", studied Child Development and Communication Arts at Beirut University College, Psychology at American University of Beirut, before pursuing her MA and Ph.D. degrees in Theater Arts in Paris.

Workshop Report: Human Rights in Prison

Omar Nashabe, an instructor of human rights at the Lebanese American University (LAU) and an instructor of Sociology at the American University of Beirut (AUB) and Haigazian University, is currently working on a voluntary basis, to improve the situation of human rights in Lebanese prisons. Nashabe earned his BA at the American University of Beirut and MA in Social Policy at the State University of New York (SUNY), and it is in those university years that he got interested in crime, deviance and rehabilitation.

The Role of the Lebanese American University in the Empowerment of Women

Allow me to start with a word of thanks to the Dubai and Northern Emirates Chapter of the Lebanese American University's Alumni Association. Chapter President Adalat Nakash and Vice President Saad El-Zein kindly invited me and gave me the opportunity to be present among you to participate in this conference on the empowerment of Arab women in various fields, such as politics, economics, and socio-cultural activities; and the role of a university in general, and LAU in particular.
