Patient safety interprofessional education program using medical error scenarios for undergraduate nursing and medical students in Korea

ABSTRACT Interprofessional education (IPE) for patient safety is becoming increasingly important worldwide. However, Korea lacks a systematic approach toward patient safety, despite the high demand for teamwork and patient communication education. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of a patient safety IPE program using medical error scenarios. The program was developed to enhance patient safety motivation and interprofessional learning attitudes among medical and nursing students, and evaluate the design of the program and students’ satisfaction levels. The program comprises two modules, each consisting of lectures, team-based case analysis, role-play, and high-fidelity simulation activities. This study followed a quasi-experimental pre-post test design to determine program outcomes. An online survey for the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS), patient safety motivation, program design evaluation, and program satisfaction was conducted before and after the program. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired sample t-tests, and Pearson’s correlation. The pre-post RIPLS and patient safety results were significant (t = −5.21, p < .001;t = −3.20, p = .002). The results of the medical scenario examination of the patient safety IPE program showed improved motivation for patient safety among students, and contributed to the improvement of IPE learning attitudes by improving team work and collaboration.

PENYUSUNAN DAN UJI COBA PROGRAM INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION (IPE) DARING PADA MAHASISWA FAKULTAS KEDOKTERAN UNIVERSITAS X: SEBUAH STUDI DENGAN METODE CAMPURAN

InterProfessional education (IPE) is a strategy used to prepare interprofessional collaboration teams in the future. However, with the various restrictions on social interaction during the COVID-19 pandemic, it encourages innovation in learning methods. Therefore, this study aims to design an online interprofessional learning module at the Faculty of Medicine of X University (FK X) as a strategy to prepare collaboration teams in the future. This study uses a mixed-method approach to obtain the data needed. A qualitative approach is used to obtain an overview of stakeholders' needs for online IPE learning design. The respondents consisted of study program leaders, lecturers and students of several study programs at the Faculty of Medicine, University X (FK X). Data collection was carried out with structured interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs). The data is recorded and made verbatim, then coding is carried out and arranged into themes and sub-themes. Evaluation of the online IPE teaching design was carried out by measuring students' perceptions of interprofessional education before and after taking the module using the IEPS (Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale) questionnaire. The first stage of qualitative research (structured interviews and FGDs) on the leadership element, 2 lecturers, and 5 students of each study program resulted in as many as 14 themes and 47 sub-themes which were described into module learning outcomes, study topics, learning activities, and characteristics of online IPE module students. The module evaluation was carried out by testing the differences in perceptions of 252 students towards pre- and post-module interprofessional education. Wilcoxon's bivariate test results showed a significant difference in perception scores for post-module inteprofessional education compared to premodule( p=0.00). There is a positive difference, namely the number of post-module scores that are greater than the pre-module score of 141 people. The increase in perception scores can also be seen from the results of the bivariate analysis of the Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, and Psychology Study Programs. This research shows that the implementation of the FK X online IPE module has succeeded in increasing students' perceptions of competence and autonomy, the perceived need to cooperate, and perceptions of interprofessional cooperation. This breakthrough is an alternative solution that can be considered for interprofessional learning during a pandemic

Effect of interprofessional education on cadaver dissection seminar.

In 2010, WHO published a "Framework for action on interprofessional education and collaborative practice." Interprofessional education (IPE) is now being conducted in various ways. We have been holding cadaver dissection seminars to provide opportunities for medical students, nursing students, and nurse practitioner (NP) students to learn together. In this study, we investigated the effect of learning about IPE in cadaver dissection seminars. The seminars were held for 5days each in 2021 and 2022 (the number of days of participation was arbitrary). In the seminars, teams of 3-5 participants with the same theme collaborated to dissect a single donated cadaver. Teams were made up of participants with different departments: 29 medical students, 12 NP students, and 20 nursing students participated in the seminar, and participants were surveyed before and after the seminars. The Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) scores before and after the dissection seminar increased significantly overall. The scores of medical and nursing students increased significantly, but those of NP students did not significantly change. In terms of the number of days of participation, a significant increase in scores was found for participants who participated for ≥ 2days. Overall, a significant positive correlation was found between intrinsic motivation to learn and RIPLS scores. For medical students, a significant negative correlation was noted between extrinsic motivation and RIPLS scores. Cadaver dissection seminars conducted by medical, nursing, and NP students demonstrated IPE learning effect on medical students and undergraduate nursing students.

The utility of an interprofessional education framework and its impacts upon perceived readiness of graduates for collaborative practice. A multimethod evaluation using the context, input, process, product (CIPP) model

BackgroundFrameworks in higher education can support strategic curriculum change in complex systems. The impact of these frameworks in achieving their stated purpose is less known. An interprofessional education (IPE) framework and related multi-activity curriculum designed to develop health profession graduates with the requisite skills for collaborative care, was introduced in a large university, across eleven health professions. ObjectiveTo determine the utility of an interprofessional framework and impact upon perceived work readiness for collaborative practice. MethodA multimethod design using the context, input, process, product (CIPP) evaluation model was selected taking a social constructivist theoretical stance. Data collection included staffing allocation to IPE, curriculum audit, and reflections from representatives of all health professions courses offered at the institution. Data was analyzed using framework analysis. ParticipantsInterviews or focus groups were undertaken with academic Faculty (n = 13), recent graduates (n = 24) and clinical supervisors/employers of recent graduates (n = 17). ResultsThe framework assisted the systematic implementation of interprofessional curriculum across the different health courses at the university. Collaborative work-ready learning outcomes were identified in graduates where targeted curriculum had been implemented across all four domains of the framework. Gaps identified in framework implementation were consistent with gaps identified in graduate knowledge and skills related to collaborative practice. The combination of formal university-based IPE and informal workplace learning as part of clinical placements contributed to achieving the desired learning outcomes. ConclusionsThese findings offer insights into the use of shared frameworks to drive specific learning activities related to collaborative practice.

Pediatric interprofessional education opportunities in entry-level doctor of physical therapy programs

Interprofessional education (IPE) is an essential curricular component for future pediatric physical therapists. Current research is inconclusive regarding the amount of pediatric IPE recommended for physical therapy (PT) education programs. This study's purpose is to explore practices guiding inclusion of IPE within entry-level PT pediatric curriculum in the United States. Data was collected using a cross sectional survey of US PT education programs. Descriptive statistics were collected for program demographics, pediatric IPE offerings, and interprofessional collaboration. Sixty percent of programs offer pediatric IPE. The most frequent IPE learning experiences are case studies and clinical rotations. PT students collaborate primarily with occupational therapy and speech language pathology programs. These results identify an opportunity to include additional interprofessional opportunity development in preparation for collaborative practice. Additional research is indicated to address the challenges to inclusion of pediatric IPE in PT education programs.

Validation of a Very Brief Assessment of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Skill Gains: ICCAS-Q21

Introduction. Assessing interprofessional education (IPE) learning experience effectiveness for developing interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) skill ability is important; however, current assessment measures pose considerable time burdens to respondents and learning experience logistics. Review of Literature. The Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey (ICCAS) is a frequently used measure for self-assessed IPCP skill ability. The ICCAS instrument is administered after an interprofessional learning experience and uses a retrospective pretest/posttest design to assess 20 items and includes one additional item assessing overall skill gain (ICCAS-Q21). Although the total ICCAS score can reveal changes in IPCP abilities after an IPE learning experience, a brief measure may facilitate assessment with greater efficiency. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the ICCAS-Q21 has the psychometric properties to serve as a stand-alone assessment instrument of self-assessed change in ability to perform the IPEC core competency skills. Subjects. Complete ICCAS scores were analyzed from 1,480 students from 12 different health professions programs (Fall 2019 [n = 807] and Spring 2020 [n = 673]). Methods. The ICCAS was completed after 2 in-person IPE forums. Total ICCAS pretest, posttest, and pretest–posttest difference (gain) scores were determined. Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey interitem reliabilities were assessed, and Pearson correlations were conducted with ICCAS-Q21 and the total ICCAS pretest, posttest, and gain scores. Results. Total ICCAS scores increased after each IPE forum (P &lt; .001). High internal consistency was observed among all items of the ICCAS. Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey-Q21 was highly correlated with ICCAS gain scores (Fall r = .431, Spring r = .468; P &lt; .001). Discussion and Conclusion. Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey-Q21, a single-item assessment instrument, has psychometric properties that warrant its use to evaluate the self-assessed change in IPE core competency skill ability and is a good proxy for the full ICCAS instrument. This brief assessment instrument provides additional flexibility in assessment techniques for IPCP learning experiences.

Effectiveness of a Virtual Interprofessional Educational Activity on the Perceptions and Attitudes of OT Students

Abstract Date Presented 04/02/2022 Coronavirus disease 2019 forced educators to provide virtual content while maintaining standards such as interprofessional education (IPE). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a virtual IPE activity on students’ attitudes and perceptions of IPE and to compare virtual with in-person IPE learning. Quantitative analysis found that virtual IPE can improve students’ attitudes and perceptions toward IPE and that it may be have as much impact as in-person activities. Qualitative analysis supports these findings. Interprofessional education can improve learning outcomes on school health among nursing students in Thailand

Background and objective: Interprofessional education (IPE) is an important step in advancing the education of health professionals. This study aimed to evaluate IPE learning outcomes and satisfaction of students that participated in a school-health program. The program was delivered as a joint collaborative topic among nursing, dental public health, and public health students. We also sought to examine students’ understanding of roles and teamwork, as well as their satisfaction with IPE.Methods: This study had a quasi-experimental design. Third-year nursing students were randomly divided into 2 groups, the IPE and non-IPE groups. All third-year dental public health students and public health students were enrolled in the IPE group. All IPE students were stratified and randomized into interprofessional teams of ten or eleven students. The program included 3 modules: 1) foundational workshops for IPE role clarification in the school-health program and situation analysis of school-health problems, 2) project planning and implementation, and 3) evaluation and sharing. Non-IPE nursing students also received the same 3 modules of the school-health learning program without working in the interprofessional team. A pretest and posttest on school-health theoretical content were completed by both groups of nursing students. In the IPE group, we collected data regarding the understanding of students’ roles within their teams before and after the course. Satisfaction with IPE learning was only asked after the course. Results: The IPE group (n = 164) consisted of 60 nursing, 59 dental public health, and 45 public health students. There were 63 nursing students in the non-IPE group. For knowledge on school health, the nursing students in the non-IPE group had a significantly higher pretest score compared to the IPE group; while there was no significant difference in post-test scores between both groups. All aspects of the interprofessional collaboration among the three health professional student groups in the IPE group increased, with a significant difference for 4 out of 6 aspects. Students were satisfied with the IPE program and wished to extend their time spent in the program.Conclusions: IPE learning provides a better understanding of different healthcare roles and enhanced teamwork between multidisciplinary teams. Incorporating IPE as a learning strategy is recommended for health professional students.

Initial Efforts to Manage IPE during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Reports from the Big Ten Academic Alliance

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic required higher education institutions to quickly transition to a virtual platform. This was challenging for those involved in interprofessional education (IPE), given the goal that students from two or more professions learn about, from, and with one another. The Big Ten IPE Alliance is a subgroup of the larger Big Ten Academic Alliance. The purpose of this paper is to share the collective experiences of multiple large, research intensive universities in addressing the challenge of implementing IPE programs under the conditions established by the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: To better understand how the Big Ten schools dealt with the transition to virtual learning for didactic and clinical IPE given the COVID-19 pandemic, a subset of representatives from the Big Ten IPE Alliance met to discuss best practices for virtual learning in the IPE realm. Each participating university completed an electronic 14 question survey related to their IPE curriculum during the COVID-19 pandemic from March 2020 thru August 2020 and the responses were analyzed. Results: Four categories were identified as needing to be addressed to develop and implement successful interprofessional didactic and clinical experiences. The categories identified included content/assessment, virtual technologies, faculty and facilitators, and learners. Conclusions/Recommendations: Consider including authentic and innovative mechanisms to deliver IPE experiences that meet the learning needs and accreditation requirements. Interinstitutional collaborations such as within the Big Ten IPE Alliance can be beneficial in assessing current and future best practices in IPE.

Online Interprofessional Education (IPE) evaluation for healthcare students as Interprofessional Collaboration (IPC) optimization

Interprofessional Education (IPE) is carried out to optimize interprofessional collaboration (IPE) in order to improve the quality of health services. Currently, conventional IPE learning is starting to shift to more flexible online IPE. The aims of this study were to evaluate the implementation of online IPE. This is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. The study involved 12 facilitators of IPE and four healthcare students. Data collection used focus group discussion (FGD) and semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was used in this qualitative study. The results of this study show that online IPE can facilitate interprofessional learning for health students. Technical barriers are the main obstacles to online IPE. Online IPE training for facilitators and an attractive, interactive IPE online curriculum design are needed to ensure IPE online runs optimally.Â

Organizational structure and resources of IPE programs in the United States: A national survey

Interprofessional education (IPE) initiatives are growing due to the Interprofessional Education Collaborative's core competencies being incorporated into health professions educations programs' accreditation criteria. This investigation examined organizational models and structures of US IPE programs using mixed methodology of quantitative survey and qualitative analysis. Responses (61% response rate from the 131 institutions surveyed) were examined to identify relationships between IPE program organizational factors. Despite marked heterogeneity in most aspects of IPE program infrastructure including administrative structure, financing, and role of the academic health center (AHC), several key relationships emerged. A centralized administrative structure was most common and was associated with dedicated resources. The majority of programs were in AHCs and this was associated with financial structure, annual budget size, program maturity, number of students participating, and references to IPE in promotion and tenure guidelines. IPE learning experiences occurred predominantly in academic settings, identifying a critical need for development of clinical IPE learning experiences. Clinical IPE learning experiences were generally not in mainstream healthcare delivery systems but filled gaps or complemented healthcare efforts for underserved populations. Qualitative analysis results supported the survey results. Continued research in IPE organizational structures is needed to determine external and internal drivers associated with program success and continued trends in the IPE field.

MODEL PEMBELAJARAN PENDIDIKAN INTERPROFESSIONAL: TINJAUAN SISTEMATIK

Introduction: Interprofessional education (IPE) emphasizes the importance of collaborative practice that can be achieved through teamwork between two or more healthcare professionals. This systematic review aims to explore more about IPE learning models. Method: The search is using electronic data base from a journal that has been published through PubMed, Science Direct and Wiley. Result: based on the review of the 12 selected journals, the learning models of IPE used is exchange-based (n = 6); action-based (n = 5); simulation-based (n = 4); and practice-based (n = 2). Discussion: various models of IPE can be used According to the learning outcomes. IPE has a positive overall impact on improving students knowledge and skills on interprofessional roles and responsibilities, communication, team and teamwork.

Achieving Interprofessional Education on Collaborative Problem-Solving for COVID-19 Using Project-Based Approach

PurposeThe interdisciplinary skills and competences are necessary for in-service current workforces who work in a collaborative health team environment for emerging disease prevention and control. To efficiently combat COVID-19, the pre-service students of health sciences need to be prepared through the interprofessional education (IPE). The present study aims to develop the IPE curriculum using project-based approach to address challenges of COVID-19 for training of undergraduate health science students, Chiang Mai University, ThailandMethods & MaterialsTeacher working group conducted a workshop to initiate a curriculum and the activities on interprofessional managements for human and animal health by combining interdisciplinary skills required for current Thai workforces. The knowledge and the attitude base of COVID-19 was evaluated before and after training. Self-assessment according to interdisciplinary skills was also performed. Use of ongoing IPE learning activities to manage the six projects for 94 participants including 22 nursing, 21 dentistry, 21 medical technology, 19 pharmacy and 12 veterinary students.ResultsAn understanding of COVID-19 knowledge on the median score before and after learning were 60.00% (IQR 53.33-73.33) and 80.00% (IQR 70.00-86.67), respectively (p < 0.01). Self-assessment according to attitudes demonstrated that the health science students had moderately good level. The IPE competencies on median the students responded from the pre-lesson 4 (IQR 3.00-4.25) to the post-lesson 4 (IQR 3.00-4.00) (p = 0.37). However, an improvement of average relative gain score of the IPE competencies was 12.34%.ConclusionThis study confirms that outcome of IPE learning activities could positively impact in improving the knowledge and the attitude on COVID-19, and interdisciplinary capacities of undergraduate health science students. However, sustainable adaptation of the IPE learning activities as an elective course should be accomplished within near future.

The VOTIS, part 2: Using a video-reflexive assessment activity to foster dispositional learning in interprofessional education

ABSTRACT Effective interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) requires a new way of working characterized by distributed leadership skills, shared decision-making, and the adoption of uniprofessional and interprofessional identities. Health professional educators are tasked with preparing clinicians for IPCP through interprofessional education (IPE). Numerous IPE teaching interventions have been developed, ranging in length from hours to semesters, designed to introduce students to interprofessional ways of working – usually evaluated in terms of student satisfaction, perceptions of other disciplines and conceptual knowledge. However, working interprofessionally also requires integrating dispositional knowledge into one’s emerging interprofessional habits and values. In this paper, we describe a learning activity, inspired by a new video-reflexive methodology, designed to foster dispositional learning of interprofessional skills using a video-based assessment tool: the Video Observation Tool for Interprofessional Skills (VOTIS). Based on focus group and interview data, we suggest the activity’s usefulness in fostering conceptual, procedural and dispositional knowledge, as well as reflexive feedback literacy. Overall, our qualitative evaluation of the VOTIS suggests the merits of drawing on video-reflexive methodology and pedagogical theory to re-imagine IPE as a dynamic process, requiring the development of interprofessional skills that must be appropriated into students’ emerging (inter)professional identities.

Model of Interprofessional Education Disaster Management using Virtual Learning in Indonesia

BACKGROUND: One of the most pressing challenges is the need to strengthen health systems based on primary health-care principles. Innovation and system transformation are needed to ensure the proper provision and distribution of health personnel, one of the most promising of which is interprofessional collaboration. AIM: The aim of this research is to produce a disaster management interprofessional education (IPE) development model. METHODS: Design of this research is one group pre- and post-test. The study used a questionnaire to measure the collaborative abilities of students before and after the implementation of IPE using the IPE model compiled by researchers. The population were Nursing Diploma students of Polytechnic of Ministry of Health Manado 3rd year, amounting to 380 people with sample counting using the Slovin formula so as to obtain a total sample of 79 people. RESULTS: The results showed an increase in the average value of the post-test increased by 130.78 from the average value of the pre-test which was 83.04. Wilcoxon statistical test results showed p = 0.000 (&lt;0.005), which means an increase in collaboration skills after respondents were given disaster management IPE learning through virtual learning. CONCLUSIONS: The IPE model was developed effectively in improving the collaboration skills of students in disaster management.

Attitudes of Undergraduate Public Health and Health Science Students towards Interprofessional Education (IPE) at a California University

Introduction: The study revealed that many healthcare professional students begin their academic studies with positive and high expectations towards interprofessional collaborative studies. Unfortunately, students lose interest if their initial expectations are not met with consistent opportunities to enhance their communication skills and better understand the different healthcare professions. The study aimed to explore health science and public health students’ attitudes toward IPE. The participants’ backgrounds and demographics were used as the variations for the study. Methods: A pre-post semi-quantitative anonymous survey was designed to assess health science and public health undergraduate students’ attitudes toward IPE. The reason for this design was to capture the participants’ attitudes toward IPE at the start of a semester when they had no academic exposure to IPE. Qualtrics was used to collect the research data. A valid and reliable scale was used to measure attitudes toward IPE. A post-survey was included to measure the participants’ change in attitude toward IPE during the semester. The goal was to measure the IPE curriculum effectiveness. There were 21 survey questions. The questions were divided into four validated subscales. The first seven questions (Questions 1 - 7) pertained to the participants’ demographics s, such as gender, age, race, ethnicity, major field of study, and prior education. Questions 8, 9, 16, & 20 were designed to determine how the participants perceived their roles and responsibilities in their future healthcare careers. Each IPE attitude question’s central tendency and demographic variations were measured. The correlation between demographics and IPE attitudes was measured. Results: The pre-survey had 192 participants, and the post-survey had 97 participants. The pre-survey had 87% of participants in the age group 17 - 25 years, while the post-survey had 82.5% in the same age group. Only 5.7% of the participants were 36 years or older in the pre-survey and 9.3% in the post-survey. The participants were 80.70% female in the pre-survey and 85.6% in the post-survey. The largest healthcare career field concentration was nursing, with 42.7% and 45.4% in the pre- and post-surveys. The other three larger career fields were healthcare administration, community health education, and physician assistant. The participants’ attitudes toward learning with different healthcare career students and becoming more effective members of a healthcare team increased from 4.36 (SD = 0.13) to 4.40 (SD = 0.17). Two negative IPE attitude questions showed an increased value: 1) The function of nursing therapists is mainly to provide support for doctors (3.51, SD = 0.19 to 3.12, SD = 0.24, p-value ≤ 0.004) and 2) Clinical and healthcare problem-solving skills could only be learned with students from the same career field (3.73, SD = 0.13 to 3.31, SD = 0.24, p-value ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: Interprofessional Education in an academic setting is essential to help healthcare students prepare and succeed in their future healthcare careers. The study results show that health science and public health students understand IPE and value academic exposure to the IPE process during their studies. Academic healthcare programs should continue integrating the IPE learning model and content throughout the student’s academic journey. The variations in IPE attitude do not significantly vary based on demographics and healthcare career fields. This study only represents a sample size of the many healthcare careers. Interprofessional communication and collaboration are essential to the future healthcare delivery challenges we face. For this reason, IPE should be integrated into healthcare education for all health science and public health students. It is recommended that more research should be done on creative curriculum design to get students more engaged in various healthcare IPE learning activities.

Purpose: This study developed an interprofessional education (IPE) program for elderly care, and analyzed its effect on healthcare college students. Method: The study was designed using a quasi-experimental method (single group, before and after). The participants were 60 students in the nursing, physical therapy, and biomedical engineering departments.Data were collected using a two-section self-reported questionnaire, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired t-test using SPSS/WIN Statistics version 23.0. Results: Students’ interprofessional attitudes and readiness for IPE learning scores were significantly high. Conclusion: We established that an IPE program can effectively increase interprofessional attitudes and readiness for IPE learning among nursing, physical therapy, and biomedical engineering students.
