Reimagining sacred spaces and spiritual leadership: Response to Andrea Baker’s paper Sacred Spaces

Through Andrea Baker’s paper, the realities of abuse and the failure of churches to protect the oppressed are brought closer to our hearts and minds. Baker presents a prophetic call to imagine how Christians may embody the kingdom of God and restore ‘sacred spaces’ in our ecclesial institutions. In light of such a prophetic challenge, as a response, this paper reflects on a couple of aspects that can be pertinent to missiologists. They are: 1) to reimagine how we understand ‘sacred spaces’ and 2) to envision the possibility of holistic leadership development that fosters ‘sacred spaces.’ Consequently, one can discern God’s redeeming presence beyond the four walls of the church while working to restore churches as ‘sacred spaces’ where the love and resurrection power of Jesus Christ become an embodying reality. This paper was read in response to Andrea Baker's plenary address titled ‘Sacred Spaces’ at the Annual Conference of the American Society of Missiology, 2024.

Tuan Guru Haji Muhammad Mutawalli's spiritual leadership has garnered attention due to his influence at the Darul Aitam Jerowaru Islamic Boarding School. The integrity of educational human resources in issue relates to the morals, ethics, honesty, accountability, and strong Islamic values that instructors and students embody. The goal of this study was to determine how Tuan Guru Haji Muhammad Mutawalli provided spiritual leadership at the Darul Aitam Jerowaru Islamic Boarding School and contributed to the integrity of Educational Human Resources. Qualitative research is a research approach based on the idea of postpositivism, with data collected using triangulation and inductive analytical procedures. The results of this study are spiritual leadership in the Islamic boarding school of the practice of the tarekat taught by Tuan Guru Haji Muhammad Mutawalli is through opening the Majlis Taklim, the Majlis pengajian for the general public, then the strategy used uses only the sharia approach and the role as the leader of the Islamic boarding school, Tuan Guru directs and organizes his students, so a Tuan Guru has a lot of charm and authority in front of his students.

SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW: SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP DALAM KONTEKS MANAJEMEN

This research aims to examine the spiritual leadership model of leadership as popular research. Leadership is an important factor in an organization in influencing its followers to achieve certain goals. Spiritual leadership can theoretically shape behavior into three, namely vision, hope/faith and altruistic love. The method used was a systematic literature review (SLR) approach, by identifying 29 relevant articles taken from the Scopus database which were analyzed. The results of this research indicate that spiritual leadership aims to have a positive impact on the organization so that it requires development in testing spiritual leadership with technological advances.

The Office of Shaykh al-‘Aql of the Druze in Lebanon

This book forum centers on Said Abou Zaki's Arabic book, “The Office of Shaykh al-‘Aql of the Druze in Lebanon.” It includes contributions from various scholars, each offering a unique perspective on the historical and institutional analysis of Druze religious leadership in Lebanon: Tuba Yildiz, Yusri Hazran, Akram Khater, and Abdul Rahman M. Chamseddine. Yildiz acknowledges the lack of historical readings and erroneous information in early 20th-century works on the Druze. She appreciates Abou Zaki's comprehensive study of Lebanese and Ottoman perspectives, offering a broader understanding of the Druze religious institution's development and its connection with the Ottoman Empire's socio-religious policies. Hazran commends the book for providing a comprehensive historical study of the Druze community's religious and spiritual leadership, shedding light on its evolution from the 11th century through to the Ottoman Empire's fall. Although the book excels in its research methods and historical insights, Hazran suggests strengthening it by addressing specific methodological and historical issues, such as placing the discussion on existing narratives and substantiating Emir Bashir Shihab II's role in the schism. Khater highlights the internal tensions in Abou Zaki's book arising from its threefold goals: serving as a historiographical essay, an origins story, and a history of Mashyakhat al-‘Aql. Khater commends the work's critical review of existing literature and acknowledges the book's significant contribution to understanding the position of Shaykh al-‘Aql amidst political crises. Chamseddine praised Abou Zaki's critical historiographical approach and genealogical method. Chamseddine highlights the importance of integrating oral histories and local traditions into academic research. He notes that Abou Zaki's work sheds light on the Druze community's religious evolution, although he critiques the book's occasional lack of coherence due to abrupt transitions and unexplained terminology. The reviewers concluded that the book constitutes a significant contribution to Druze Studies.

Exploring the influence of spiritual leadership, leader - member exchange, and traditionality orientation on employee voice behavior.

This research builds on the idea that the exchange of resources between leaders and followers can influence the behavior of employees. Specifically, the study investigates how leaders can develop strong leader-member exchange (LMX) with their followers, and how this exchange can lead to increased employee voice behavior. The study analyzed data collected from 365 individual employees working in Chinese organization. The findings indicate that LMX acts as a mediator between spiritual leadership and employee voice behavior. The strength of this mediation, however, depends on the followers' level of traditionality orientation. Notably, the findings indicate that the effect is significant only among individuals who exhibit low traditionality. Theoretical contributions and implications for practice are discussed in later sections.

Leadership and the ethics of hope: Václav Havel and the Charter 77 human rights movement in Czechoslovakia

Hope as a feature in both authentic and spiritual leadership theory has become a diminished moral concept, departing from its philosophical and theological roots, and distorted by excessive positivity, success, instrumentalization, cultural bias, and ideology. Following Ciulla’s (2014) assertion that biography can do much to inform leadership theory, this paper contributes a richer understanding of hope through the though case of Václav Havel and the Charter 77 human rights movement in Czechoslovakia using French existentialist Gabriel Marcel’s ethics of hope. Five elements of Marcel’s philosophy demonstrate hope’s transforming vulnerability amidst technological control, relationship with despair, active presence, creative fidelity, and transcending power in love. Examining Czechoslovakia’s human rights movement through the lens of Marcellian ethics provides insight into the role of absurdity and truth-telling as a precursor to hope, taking responsibility for failure, overcoming fear through the “solidarity of the shaken,” creative fidelity through living in truth and using humor, and love manifesting as sacrifice and openness to seeing one’s contribution to the moral contamination of society under totalitarianism.

Spiritual Leadership in the Upheaval of Settler Colonialism

In the current global landscape, characterized by religious fervour, social and political unrest, economic instability, and environmental challenges, spiritual leaders stand as pivotal agents of change. Their role is especially crucial in contexts marred by ingrained injustices and persistent conflicts, such as the Palestinian–Israeli settler colonial context—a reality I have been intimately involved with over three decades of reconciliation work. This paper contextualizes scholarship on spiritual leadership within the Palestinian–Israeli context by integrating it with settler colonial theory. By applying insights about spiritual leadership to this context, three key traits of spiritual leaders—(1) spiritual authority, (2) discernment, and (3) the ethical use of power—are identified as essential for envisioning an alternative future. By embodying these traits, spiritual leaders can effectively guide their communities through the multifaceted realities, advocating a transformative approach to leadership and interreligious work.

The religious dimension of Russia's war against Ukraine: the context of national security

The author highlights the current problems of the Ukrainian state in the context of Russia's large-scale war against Ukraine. The importance of studying the religious factor and its impact on Ukraine's national security is substantiated. It is shown how, with the “spiritual” support of its original assistant, the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), the Moscow Patriarchate in Ukraine in the guise of the so-called Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC-MP) has been actively proclaiming the “gathering of Russian lands” for decades. This “hostile tandem” has been building a “Russian world” on Ukrainian territory with intolerance to everything Ukrainian, pursuing a collaborationist policy in Ukraine, lobbying for Russia's interests, and becoming an important tool for influencing the minds of a large number of people. With the restoration of the independence of the Ukrainian state, Orthodoxy was supposed to become a consolidating factor in the creation of the Ukrainian nation. Instead, for decades, the UOC-MP has been constantly deconsolidating Ukrainian society, sowing church discord, and discrediting Ukraine's political and spiritual leadership in the international arena. Such activities have resulted in not only the territorial but also the spiritual occupation of our country. It is concluded that the concept of the “Russian world”, cultivated for years in Ukraine by the Kremlin through its “Orthodox” structures of the Russian Orthodox Church and the UOC-MP, was mainly the basis for the invasion of Ukrainian territories by the occupiers, which later escalated into a large-scale national liberation war in 2022. The study used data from sociological services, official documents of church institutions, and analyzed Ukrainian legislation on related issues. Certain provisions of the study can be used to further analyze the activities and spheres of influence of the Moscow Patriarchate in order to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Growth of a Movement Through Spiritual Leadership: Faith Community Nursing in the United States.

Faith community nursing often is anchored in a community through local networks that support the development of both the ministry and the faith community nurse. Such local networks are established and sustained through the leadership of faith community nurses (FCNs). A research study interviewed nurses recognized as foundational to the development of FCNs in the United States from 1984 to 2000. The Waterwheel Model of Spiritual Leadership was used as a construct for interviewing 24 FCN leaders discovered through Delphi methodology. An adaptation of Colazzi's method of qualitative analysis was used to analyze data collected in videotaped format. Three predominant themes emerged that may be instrumental to developing future FCN leaders and growth of this specialty nursing practice.

Essential competencies for healthcare chaplains: insights from hiring managers and implications for chaplaincy education

This first-of-its-kind study explored the essential competencies healthcare chaplaincy hiring managers (HCHMs) sought for entry-level healthcare chaplains (HCCs). We conducted qualitative interviews with 16 HCHMs and using reflexive thematic analysis (RTA), developed nine key themes: interpersonal skills, teamwork, knowledge of family and group dynamics, understanding of the healthcare system, professionalism, proficiency in spiritual assessment, effective communication, commitment to lifelong learning, and knowledge of various religious and spiritual beliefs, extending beyond one’s own faith tradition. These themes reflected HCCs roles as healthcare professionals who contribute to patient care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and spiritual leadership responsibilities. The study underscored the need for chaplaincy education to integrate healthcare-specific coursework, interprofessional training, cultural and religious humility, and deeper knowledge of diverse belief systems. Developing and incorporating curriculum standards based on these themes could enhance the readiness of HCCs to deliver comprehensive care and meet the dynamic demands of diverse patient populations within today’s healthcare landscape.

Effect of Demographic Factors on Spiritual Leadership for Workplace Well-being of Teachers at Secondary Level

The objectives of the research study were to find out the effect of demographic factors on the spiritual leadership relationship for workplace well-being of teaches at secondary level. All public and private secondary schools of district Muzaffargarh were the population of the study and it was 2292. The sample of teachers from tehsil Muzaffargarh was 285, from tehsil Alipur was 223 and from tehsil Jatoi was 173. Moreover, the demographic information like school regions /tehsil, school location, gender. Sector. Designation of teacher, teaching experiences, age group, academic qualification and professional qualification were taken as to find out the effect of these factors on the spiritual leadership and workplace well-being of teachers at secondary level and it was significant also. Similarly, it was concluded that these demographic factors are significant for the participants especially for teachers to enhance the spiritual leadership and workplace well-being at secondary level. Moreover, it was suggested that this study cannot analyzed overall teacher’s views about the spiritual leadership and workplace wellbeing at Secondary level. Future researchers may focus on analyzing views of teachers based on their specific subject of teaching or area/discipline at any level.

Integration of social exchange theory: spiritual leadership on millennial organizational performance

For organizations whose members are predominantly Muslim, the appropriate leaders are leaders who have Islamic values ​​or what is usually called spiritual leadership. Based on the spiritual leadership approach, encouraging employees to participate in ta'awun behavior enhances human resources efficiency within a business organization. Researchers have studied many leadership models, but only a few have explored spiritual leadership models and OCBI and OCBO on human resource performance. The study aims to contribute to the growth of research into spiritual leadership models, OCBI, and OCBO behavior about HR performance. This study investigates the mediating role of ta'awun behavior in the relationship between spiritual leadership and HR performance. This study emphasizes 190 employees from PT Arkatama Solusindo and PT Digi Partner Studio and a quantitative research paradigm using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis tool. According to this research, the spiritual leadership model is the most effective factor for improving human resource performance. Its influence can be effectively reduced by OCBI and OCBO behavior. OCBI behavior serves as a mediator for the impact of spiritual leadership on HR performance. Meanwhile, the mediating variable OCBO does not have a mediating role.

Spiritual Leadership Enhances Caring Behaviour: The Mediating Role of Calling

Background: Caring behaviour is essential for patient health; however, it is often not practised optimally. Therefore, spiritually-based leadership is required to encourage this behaviour. Unfortunately, research investigating the ability of spiritual leadership to enhance caring behaviour through spiritual well-being is limited.Purpose: This study aimed to examine the impact of spiritual leadership and spiritual well-being in the form of calling and membership on caring behaviour.Methods: This study employed an explanatory quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. One hundred fourteen inpatient nurses who provided comprehensive patient care were selected as a total sampling technique. Data were collected using the Spiritual Leadership Questionnaire and the Caring Behaviours Inventory. The analysis adopted partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) using a second-order reflective-formative model.Results: The findings demonstrate that spiritual leadership has a significant direct effect on caring behaviour (t=3.976, p=0.000), calling (t=4.672, p=0.000), and membership (t=2.845, p=0.005). However, the direct impact of membership on caring behaviour was insignificant (t=1.298, p=0.194). Calling proved to mediate the effects of spiritual leadership on caring behaviour (t=3.145, p=0.002), while membership could not function as a mediator (t=1.197, p=0.231).Conclusion: This study emphasizes the importance of spiritual leadership in nursing care, particularly in enhancing nurses' caring behaviours. Healthcare organizations should implement training programs on spiritual leadership to encourage calling nurses to perform their duties with dedication. Developing nurse membership should be considered, but the main focus must be on strategies that strengthen nurses' calling, as this is an essential factor in providing quality and empathetic care.

Spiritual Leadership Scale: Theoretical Foundations and Empirical Validation in the Context of Turkish Employees.

The objective of this study was twofold: firstly, to develop a novel scale for measuring the concept of spiritual leadership, and secondly, to evaluate the psychometric properties of this scale. The principal objective was to facilitate the assessment of spiritual leadership on the part of managerial personnel. In the course of the research, a three-stage process was undertaken. In the initial phase, the theoretical underpinnings of the concept were established through a comprehensive review of the spiritual leadership literature, and an item pool was constructed. In the second stage, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was employed to ascertain the factor structure of the scale. In the third stage, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was employed to corroborate the identified structure and criterion validity analysis was conducted. The EFA results indicated that the scale exhibited a single-factor structure. The CFA results demonstrated that the model exhibited good fit indices, thereby confirming the single-factor structure. In the reliability analyses, the internal consistency coefficient (Cronbach's alpha) of the scale was 0.988, which indicated a high level of reliability. These findings collectively demonstrate that the spiritual leadership scale possesses sufficient validity and reliability.
