The influence of geology, topography and climatic conditions on the mode of formation of typical lateritic soil profiles have been investigated, with emphasis on conditions in Ghana, West Africa. The physical chemical mechanical and weathering characteristics of such gravels have been studied. Significant statistical correlations are developed between various physical properties and mechanical strength. In addition, very significant correlation exists between the ratio of oxides of silica to iron and the mechanical strength. No such correlation seem to exist between the ratios of silica to alumina or silica sesquioxide, indicating that iron oxide plays a dominant role in the development of mechanical strength in laterites. On the basis of field studies and laboratory data, lateritic gravels have been divided into four groups, each group having a range of physical, chemical and mechanical properties which corresponds with the performance of the gravels in the field.
