DH36 marine steel was surface modified by laser surface melting process and further consecutive point-mode forging (LSM-CPF) process. The tensile properties of the coating after LSM-CPF process were significantly improved showing highest yield strength (σ0.2) and tensile strength (σb) for the sample treated with 4000 W laser power and 10% reduction ratio of 721.3 and 884.2 MPa, higher by 49.55% and 41.54% than that of the DH36 matrix, respectively. At the same time, the LSM-CPF process also results in slight anisotropism according to the tensile tests. The electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique was used to investigate the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) mechanism during the CPF process. The appearance of mixed discontinuous-DRX (dDRX) and continuous-DRX (cDRX) behavior is observed under a low reduction ratio. As the deformation proceeds, the DRX mechanism is mainly of the cDRX. The anisotropism of different samples was partially as the result of the DRX behavior resulting in local non-uniformity strain gradient distribution. Additionally, the transmission electron microscope (TEM) method was employed, in order to verify the DRX mechanism. Moreover, the lamellar pearlite structures shown in the CPF zone caused the difference of deformation resistance along with the RD and TD for the 4000 W treatment samples.
