Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy for gas detection with a negative curvature anti-resonant hollow-core fiber

In this study, an all-fiber gas sensing technology was proposed, which is based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy in the near infrared. A negative curvature anti-resonant hollow-core fiber was used as the gas chamber and optical channel, and an opto-gas coupling miniature tee was used in the configuration. Down to ppb (parts-per-billion) level noise-equivalent concentration was achieved with a fast-response capability of less than 6 s. The results demonstrated strong long-term stability, with a relative standard deviation of approximately 2.1% over a 12-hour period. This approach demonstrates a simple, robust, fast response and compact sensor configuration that contributes to better management of greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution

Correlations between Bench-Scale and Large-Scale Extinction Metrics for Firefighting Foams

Locally weighted regressions (LWR) were calculated between MIL-PRF-24385 1.8 m diameter pool fire extinction results and various 19 cm pool fire metrics, as compiled in a recent database. The goal: to define correlations between bench and large-scale foam fire extinction experiments to improve bench-scale experiments to more rapidly screen the firefighting potential of environmentally-friendly foams. Bench-scale metrics included the area under the curve (AUC) for extinction time versus foam flow rate profiles, the average extinction times at binned foam flow rate ranges, and CO2-based extinction times, determined through tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) measurements above the pool fire. When cross-validation was implemented within the LWR algorithm, the AUC values, CO2-based extinction times, and extinction times for a flow rate-bin > 1500 ml/min showed the best correlations to large-scale data; however, the R2 values were all below 0.6, indicating a low level of correlation. Although differences between active versus passive firefighter and foam generation methods exist between the two scales, data accuracy and limited data are likely contributing the most to low R2 values. The LWR correlations are promising and can be improved with accurate data, providing confidence in bench-scale testing despite diminished radiation intensity and turbulence associated with larger fires.

Simultaneous detection of soot, temperature, and C2H2 in laminar premixed flames using a multi-pass diode laser absorption spectrometer

We report the development of a multi-pass diode laser absorption spectroscopy system for simultaneous measurements of soot volume fraction (SVF), temperature, and C2H2 concentration using a single diode laser near 1.543 µm. A line-shaped beam spot pattern is chosen for the open-path Herriott multi-pass cavity, enabling sensitive detection at various heights above the burner with an effective optical absorption path length of approximately 1.2 m in a 6 cm diameter flame region. The gas parameters (temperature and C2H2 concentration) and the SVF are determined from the absorption spectra of the target C2H2 line pair and the laser extinction of the soot, which can be extracted from the detected signal, respectively. The performance of the system was confirmed in laminar premixed ethylene and air (C2H4/air) sooting flames produced by a standard bronze plug McKenna burner at four representative equivalence ratios. All the measurement results were compared with the two-dimensional (2D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations using a skeletal mechanism with the Moss−Brookes model. The good quantitative and qualitative agreement between the TDLAS measurements and 2D CFD simulations confirms the powerful capability of the developed system.

Ultrafast Photochemical Reaction of Exiguobacterium sibiricum Rhodopsin (ESR) at Alkaline pH

Rhodopsin from the eubacterium Exiguobacterium sibiricum (ESR) performs the function of light-dependent proton transport. The operation of ESR is based on the ultrafast photochemical reaction of isomerization of the retinal chromophore, which triggers dark processes closed in the photocycle. Many parameters of the photocycle are determined by the degree of protonation of Asp85 – the primary counterion of the chromophore group and the proton acceptor. ESR in detergent micelles pumps protons most efficiently at pH 9, when Asp85 is almost completely deprotonated. In this work, the photochemical reaction of ESR at pH 9.5 was studied by femtosecond laser absorption spectroscopy. It was shown that photoisomerization of the chromophore group occurs in 0.51 ps, and the contribution of the reactive excited state is about 80%. A comparison with the data we obtained at pH 7.4 showed that at pH 9.5 the reaction proceeds much faster and more efficiently. The data obtained confirm the important role of the chromophore group counterion in the photoactivated processes of rhodopsins.

Solid-to-gas phase transition kinetics of diverse potassium occurrence forms during biomass pellet combustion: Time-resolved detection and multi-step modeling

The solid-to-gas phase transition of potassium during biomass combustion significantly impacts ash-related issues in bioenergy systems, affecting operational efficiency and equipment longevity. However, the specific mechanisms and kinetics of this transition process remain inadequately understood. This work investigates the time-resolved transition of solid-phase potassium to the gas phase during the combustion of rice husk and wheat straw pellets, combining experimental measurements with theoretical modeling. Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) was employed to measure atomic potassium concentrations 15 mm above burning pellets tray, where gas-phase equilibrium is approached. Key combustion characteristics including thermogravimetric profiles, spectral radiation, and temperature were simultaneously monitored. A novel multi-step model was developed to describe the transition of different forms of solid-phase potassium (organic, exchangeable, and inorganic) to the gas phase. This model integrates TDLAS measurements, observed combustion characteristics, and biomass physicochemical properties. Thermodynamic equilibrium calculations were used to estimate the atomic potassium fraction from total gaseous potassium. The results showed that the solid-to-gas phase transition of organic potassium synchronizes with volatiles release. In contrast, the maximum emission rates of inorganic and exchangeable potassium occurred at the onset of char combustion. The developed model agrees well with the online detection experiments and were further validated by offline ICP analysis of residual ash. While not directly simulating gas-solid interface reactions near the particle surface, this work lays groundwork for future multi-scale modeling of particle-laden flows and reactor-scale phenomena in biomass combustion systems.

Additively-manufactured shear tri-coaxial rocket injector mixing and combustion characteristics

A monolithic tri-coaxial propellant injection scheme for enhanced mixing of methane-oxygen in liquid-propellant rocket systems is enabled by additive manufacturing. Mixing and combustion characteristics of the tri-coaxial design are assessed experimentally from 1–69 bar using laser absorption tomography and chemiluminescence imaging, and are compared to a traditionally-manufactured bi-coaxial design. Quantitative two-dimensional images of temperature and carbon monoxide mole fraction are generated from the laser absorption spectroscopy methods, while OH* chemiluminescence provides an approximate metric for combustion heat release defining flame length and injector standoff distance. At similar pressures and oxidizer-to-fuel ratios, the tri-coaxial injector design is shown to enhance mixing and combustion progress, reducing characteristic mixing length scales and achieving improved combustion performance relative to more conventional bi-coaxial designs. Despite enhanced mixing, the tri-coaxial design exhibits more limited reduction in flame standoff distance from the injector face, suggesting that increased heat flux to the injector face can be managed. The tri-coaxial injector highlights the potential to leverage additive manufacturing to enhance performance and simplify the fabrication of liquid-propellant rocket engines.

Near-Infrared Dual-Range Methane Sensor Using the OAIC-HC Mode Based on VMD-SG-Assisted Optical Noise Suppression.

Based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy and off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy, a dual-range methane hybrid sensor was constructed utilizing the overtone absorption band of CH4 gas molecules at 1653.7 nm. By simultaneously utilizing an off-axis integrated cavity and Herriott cell with an effective absorption path of 11 and 405 m, respectively, the two received photoelectric signals are decomposed into different frequency components by VMD and then reconstructed after SG filtering. Applying the global optimization algorithm DA-ELM to CH4 concentration inversion, the correlation coefficient R2 is as high as 0.9995. Through long-term stability verification, the instrument's standard deviation at 1 ppm is 27 ppb. After Allan-Werle deviation analysis, the sensor's limit of detection is 2.298 ppb at an integration time of 138 s. Using the self-developed sensor, the detection of dual-range trace CH4 gas is achieved, enabling a dynamic detection range of trace CH4 gas ranging from 400 ppb to 1000 ppm. The sensor realizes dual-range methane trace detection and actively controls methane emissions to improve environmental quality while taking into account the safety benefits of reducing production accidents.

Development of a Single Vial Mass Flow Rate Monitor to Assess Pharmaceutical Freeze Drying Heterogeneity.

During pharmaceutical lyophilization processes, inter-vial drying heterogeneity remains a significant obstacle. Due to differences in heat and mass transfer based on vial position within the freeze drier, edge vials freeze differently, are typically warmer and dry faster than center vials. This vial position-dependent heterogeneity within the freeze dryer leads to tradeoffs during process development. During primary drying, process developers must be careful to avoid shelf temperatures that would result in overheating of edge vials causing the product sublimation interface temperature to rise above the critical (collapse) temperature. However, at lower shelf temperatures, center vials require longer to complete primary drying, risking collapse or melt-back due to incomplete drying. Both situations may result in poor product quality affecting drug stability, activity, and reconstitution times. We present a new approach for monitoring vial location-specific water vapor mass flow based on Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS). The single vial monitor enables measurement of the gas flow velocity, water vapor temperature, and gas concentration from the sublimating ice, enabling the calculation of the mass flow rate which can be used in combination with a heat and mass transfer model to determine vial heat transfer coefficients and product resistance to drying. These parameters can in turn be used for robust and rapid process development and control.

Numerical and experimental investigation of the steam penetration in narrow channels during a dynamic steam sterilization cycle

The most challenging aspect of steam sterilization is the removal of all non-condensable gases (NCGs) from the autoclave. These gases prevent the effective killing of microorganisms, impairing the sterility of medical devices. Special cycles are performed to ensure the penetration of steam, even into the deepest passages. To better understand this process, numerical models were developed to determine the spatial distribution of steam within the chamber, including its penetration into narrow channels. These are the first models that can be used to accurately determine the flow within three-dimensional cavities during a dynamic sterilization cycle. To validate the model, an experiment was designed using direct tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy at a wavelength of 1364 nm to measure the mole fraction of steam present at the end of an aluminum pipe at a temporal resolution of 1 s. This represents a pioneering application of this technique in the field of steam sterilization. This setup was designed for installation on any autoclave. Both simulation and experimental data exhibit good agreement over the entire pressure range (0.18–3.15 bar). The most interesting observation made during the study was the increase in the steam content at the end of the tube while a vacuum was generated. The numerical results show that the mole fraction of H2O increased from 0.53 to 0.63 over the course of a single vacuum phase. This phenomenon was attributed to a stronger diffusion effect combined with small pressure gradients during low pressures. This finding inspired the idea of taking the diffusion effect more into account when designing sterilization cycles in the future to make them more sustainable and effective. The presented methodologies and models represent an excellent basis for conducting more complex investigations in the future, such as those investigating the influence of condensation effects on steam penetration in cavities.

Freestanding Germanium Photonic Crystal Waveguide for a Highly Sensitive and Compact Mid-Infrared On-Chip Gas Sensor.

The performance of mid-infrared (MIR) on-chip gas sensors, operating via laser absorption spectroscopy, hinges critically on light-matter interaction dynamics, significantly influenced by external confinement and the effective light path length. Conventional on-chip sensors, however, face challenges in achieving the required limit of detection for highly sensitive applications, primarily due to their intrinsically short effective light path. Furthermore, these sensors are limited in their spectral range coverage within the MIR spectrum by the constraints of standard silicon-based platforms. To overcome these limitations, our research presents a novel approach to fabricate a freestanding germanium (Ge) photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) on a germanium-on-insulator (Ge-OI) platform, utilizing yttrium oxide (Y2O3) as the buried oxide layer. This device leverages the broad transparent windows of Ge and Y2O3, broadening the spectral coverage across the MIR range. The introduction of the PCW and its slow light effect significantly elevate external confinement and light-matter interactions, enabling a notable reduction in waveguide length, which traditionally limits on-chip configurations. The freestanding structure not only expands the sensing region and enhances external confinement but also prevents the emergence of leaky modes within the PCW. As a result, our compact sensor achieves an exceptionally low LoD of 7.56 ppm for carbon dioxide (CO2) sensing at the operational wavelength of 4.23 μm, with a compact waveguide length of only 800 μm.

Calibration-free infrared absorption spectroscopy using cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic detection of the optical power

We report on sensitive tunable laser absorption spectroscopy using a multipass gas cell and a solid-state photoacoustic optical power detector. Unlike photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS), this method readily allows a low gas pressure for high spectral selectivity and a free gas flow for continuous measurements. Our photoacoustic optical power detector has a large linear dynamic range and can be used at almost any optical wavelength, including the middle infrared and THz regions that are challenging to cover with traditional optical detectors. Furthermore, our approach allows for compensation of laser power drifts with a single detector. As a proof of concept, we have measured very weak CO2 absorption lines at 9.2 µm wavelength and achieved a normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) of 2.35·10−9 Wcm−1Hz−1/2 with a low-power quantum cascade laser. The absolute value of the gas absorption coefficient is obtained directly from the Beer-Lambert law, making the technique calibration-free.

Interannual variations in the Δ(17O) signature of atmospheric CO2 at two mid-latitude sites suggest a close link to stratosphere–troposphere exchange

Abstract. Δ(17O) measurements of atmospheric CO2 have the potential to be a tracer for gross primary production and stratosphere–troposphere mixing. A positive Δ(17O) originates from intrusions of stratospheric CO2, whereas values close to −0.21 ‰ result from the equilibration of CO2 and water, which predominantly happens inside plants. The stratospheric source of CO2 with high Δ(17O) is, however, not well defined in the current models. More, and long-term, atmospheric measurements are needed to improve this. We present records of the Δ(17O) of atmospheric CO2 obtained with laser absorption spectroscopy from Lutjewad in the Netherlands (53°24′ N, 6°21′ E) and Mace Head in Ireland (53°20′ N, 9°54′ W) that cover the period 2017–2022. The records are compared with a 3-D model simulation, and we study potential model improvements. Both records show significant interannual variability of up to 0.3 ‰. The total range covered by smoothed monthly averages from the Lutjewad record is −0.34 ‰ to −0.12 ‰, which is significantly higher than the range of −0.20 ‰ to −0.17 ‰ for the model simulation. The 100 hPa 60–90° N monthly-mean temperature anomaly was used as a proxy to scale stratospheric downwelling in the model. This strongly improves the correlation coefficient of the simulated and observed year-to-year Δ(17O) variations over the period 2019–2021 from 0.40 to 0.82. As the Δ(17O) of atmospheric CO2 seems to be dominated by stratospheric influx, its use as a tracer for stratosphere–troposphere exchange should be further investigated.

IMPMH, direct tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy for detection of water vapour under “Optically thick Condition”

Water vapour plays a crucial role in atmospheric processes. Hence, monitoring the altitude-related variations in water vapour properties is important to decipher atmospheric processes. Direct tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (dTDLAS) measures the concentration and temperature of gas molecules by scanning the rotation-vibration absorption lines using a high-spectral-resolution laser. In this study, we devised an integrated measurement and data processing method (integrative measurement and processing method for hygrometry, IMPMH) to enhance the in-situ airborne measurement capability of dTDLAS. We measured a wide range (240–18,000 ppm) of water vapour concentrations, aiming for atmospheric measurements in a highly water-saturated regime, called the “optically thick condition”. For recovering the full absorption spectra, the “integrative area” was defined and a difference factor D, which is the distance between two spectral regions with width corresponding to the half width of half maximum of the Voigt profile, was used to calculate the area. From the data, the low-bound concentration was measured to be 244 ppm. At D = 1.8, the transition concentration to the “optically thick condition” was measured to be 5,800 ppm. By increasing D from 1.8 to 2.8, the measurable upper-bound concentration increased to 17,993 ppm. IMPMH was applied to the measured data to estimate the final absorber density or water vapour concentration. The estimation was well-fitted with the measured detector signal with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of ∼ 300 of the residual spectrum, promising its applicability to in-situ airborne measurements. To validate IMPMH, the water vapour concentration range was divided into two regimes: (1) optically thick (5,800 < c < 18,000 ppm) and (2) optically thin (c < 5,800 ppm) conditions. Under the optically thick condition, IMPMH was validated by comparing the results between the short and long-path cells. In the optically thin condition, IMPMH was validated through comparison with the general dTDLAS method. Lastly, long-term stability of the dTDLAS system was validated by measuring 10 different concentrations (240–18,000 ppm) for 1000 s by characterising the precision and SNRs of the residual. The results demonstrate that IMPMH significantly enhances the in-situ airborne measurement capability of dTDLAS under both optically thick and thin conditions. Furthermore, requirements for the implementation of IMPMH in airborne measurement were investigated considering four aspects—sampling, low-pressure measurement, accuracy and precision, and multiplex detection. The results were examined with regard to atmospheric implications.

Estimation of Staphylococcus total viable count in different contamination states of central venous catheters in hemodialysis centers based on tunable diode laser wavelength‐modulation spectroscopy

AbstractThe surveillance and assessment of the total viable count (TVC) of Staphylococcus under different levels of catheter contamination are crucial for the prevention and evaluation of catheter‐related infections in hemodialysis (HD). This paper demonstrates the noninvasive and accurate measurement of the TVC of Staphylococcus using wavelength‐modulated tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (WMAS). The tunable distributed feedback laser with a central wavelength of 2004 nm was employed and the detection limit of 22.5 ppm for carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by Staphylococcus epidermidis was obtained. The growth of Staphylococcus under different medium concentrations was studied, and the results indicated a strong correlation between the growth rate and final TVC of S. epidermidis with the medium concentration. When the degree of catheter contamination was low, resulting in minimal residual nutrient concentration within the catheter, the bacterial growth rate and TVC were effectively suppressed. Therefore, it is proven that WMAS is a user‐friendly, noninvasive, and high signal‐to‐noise ratio technique for monitoring Staphylococcus, making it an effective tool for assessing Staphylococcus growth in HD catheter surveillance.

Suppression of cross-interference in the absorption spectra of gas mixtures

In the quantitative analysis of mixed gases by tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy, the overlapping of absorption spectra and mutual interference of multi-component gases can lead to problems of large measurement errors and low analysis accuracy. In this paper, an improved firefly algorithm is proposed and applied to the support vector machine regression model to solve this problem. The specific method includes introducing an adaptive step size to balance the local and global searches and using the gradient descent method to accelerate the parameter optimization process so as to improve the model’s generalization ability and prediction accuracy. The experimental results show that the maximum errors of the improved algorithm in the prediction of CH4 and CO gas concentrations are no more than 0.0443 % and 2 ppm, with coefficients of determination, R2, of 0.9994 and 0.99815. The promising results obtained by the system provide theoretical support for the realization of high-precision detection of multicomponent gases with a single source of light, and also demonstrate the high efficiency and feasibility of the method in practical detection.

MHz sampling rate measurements of N2(A3Σu+) population in a Ns pulse discharge in a heated plasma flow reactor

Abstract Absolute, time-resolved population of a metastable electronic state of molecular nitrogen, N2( A 3 Σ u + , v = 0 ), is measured in a heated plasma flow reactor excited by a ns pulse discharge burst, by tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy using a distributed feedback laser. Nitrogen or NO–N2 gas mixture in the reactor are heated by a tube furnace maintained at T = 800–1000 K, at pressures of P = 50–300 Torr. A diffuse plasma in the flow channel made of quartz is generated using a repetitively pulsed, double dielectric barrier, ns discharge in a plane-to-plane geometry. N2( A 3 Σ u + ) molecules in the plasma are generated by electron impact excitation of N2 ( B 3 Π g ) and N2 ( C 3 Π u ) states, followed by their cascade quenching. The laser is tuned across an absorption line near 1028 nm in a N2 B 3 Π g , v ′ = 0 ← A 3 Σ u + , v ′ ′ = 0 band at 100 kHz–1 MHz. The laser output wavelength and the absorption signal are measured by an etalon and two high bandwidth detectors. At all operating conditions, the absorption signal is fully resolved in time. The data points are taken every 500 ns–5 μs, with the temporal uncertainty of 50–500 ns, respectively. The data are used to infer the line pressure broadening coefficient and its temperature dependence. This study demonstrates the feasibility of this approach for the time-resolved N2( A 3 Σ u + ) measurements in pulsed hypersonic flow facilities, behind strong shock waves and in hypervelocity expansion flows.

A non-absorption-loss immune TDLAS sensor for online Mach number evaluation in supersonic flows

Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) techniques are widely used in combustion monitoring by using direct absorption spectroscopy (DAS). However, the DAS method is sensitive to laser intensity fluctuations and fails to work in harsh application cases. A non-absorption-loss immune TDLAS sensor was proposed for robust online evaluation of Mach number from temperature and speed in supersonic flows and in situ validated on a scramjet. Spectral lines of H2O at 7185.58 and 7444.35 cm−1 were selected to perform evaluations of target molecules, i.e., of water vapor. In highly turbulent supersonic flows of Mach 2.8, the proposed TDLAS sensor has improved the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the transmitted laser intensity by about 6.46 dB, compared to the conventional single-ended TDLAS sensor. When the ramjet was running stably, the average Mach number was 2.82, and standard deviations of the Mach number were less than 0.09. Relative errors of measured Mach numbers were less than 1.39 %. The proposed sensor monitors the entire ramjet engine process from ignition to propellant cut-off at a rate of 5 kHz and yields detailed insights for ramjet performance evaluation.

Simultaneous measurement of temperature and C2H4 concentration in hydrocarbon flames using interference-immune differential absorption spectroscopy at 3.3 μm

In diagnostic applications based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy, the measurement of target substances can be influenced by factors such as background thermal radiation in the combustion environment, extinction caused by solid or liquid particles, and other interfering absorptions. In this work, we developed a differential absorption diagnostic technique based on wavelength pairs, utilizing an interband cascade laser near 3.3 μm to simultaneously measure temperature and C2H4 concentration in hydrocarbon flames. Based on a detailed study of the C2H4 spectrum in this region and considering the optimal standard for spectral lines, two wavelength pairs were selected. The temperature is determined by the ratio of the absorption cross-sections of two wavelength pairs, and the C2H4 concentration is inferred based on the wavelength pair with higher differential absorption. In the initial stage, the system’s accuracy was verified in high-temperature static conditions (T = 300–800 K, P = 1 atm), and continuous time series measurements demonstrated the system’s stability. The limit of detection achieved by Allan-Werle variance analysis is 2.5 ppm at the optimal average time of 100 s. Subsequently, measurements were taken in a hydrocarbon flame. The obtained results indicate an average deviation of 1.021 % between the measured temperature in the flame and the reference value, with a standard deviation of 1.381 % for concentration measurement. All the measurements show that the system can be potentially applied to combustion diagnosis.

Discrimination of Explosive Residues by Standoff Sensing Using Anodic Aluminum Oxide Microcantilever Laser Absorption Spectroscopy with Kernel-Based Machine Learning.

Standoff laser absorption spectroscopy (LAS) has attracted considerable interest across many applications for environmental safety. Herein, we propose an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) microcantilever LAS combined with machine learning (ML) for sensitive and selective standoff discrimination of explosive residues. A nanoporous AAO microcantilever with a thickness of <1 μm was fabricated using a micromachining process; its spring constant (18.95 mN/m) was approximately one-third of that of a typical Si microcantilever (53.41 mN/m) with the same dimensions. The standoff infrared (IR) spectra of pentaerythritol tetranitrate, cyclotrimethylene trinitramine, and trinitrotoluene were measured using our AAO microcantilever LAS over a wide range of wavelengths, and they closely matched the spectra obtained using standard Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The standoff IR spectra were fed into ML models, such as kernel extreme learning machines (KELMs), support vector machines (SVMs), random forest (RF), and backpropagation neural networks (BPNNs). Among these four ML models, the kernel-based ML models (KELM and SVM) were found to be efficient learning models able to satisfy both a high prediction accuracy (KELM: 94.4%, SVM: 95.8%) and short hyperparameter optimization time (KELM: 5.9 s, SVM: 7.6 s). Thus, the AAO microcantilever LAS with kernel-based learners could emerge as an efficient sensing method for safety monitoring.

Cubic nonlinear scanning for improved TDLAS-based methane concentration detection

In this study, we developed and validated an improved tuning method for a nonlinear scanning laser diode in methane gas sensing, using wavelength modulation spectroscopy - tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (WMS-TDLAS). This approach combines cubic nonlinear scanning with high-frequency modulation to precisely target the methane absorption peak at 6046.96 cm−1. The method enhances absorption time, thus increasing system sensitivity and stability. Our results show that this nonlinear scanning, optimized for peak absorption, significantly improves the slope of the methane concentration relationship curve by 76.9%. It also reduces the standard deviation by 61.1% and the limit of detection by 60% compared to linear scanning. The limit of detection the system is 4.2 ppm, and the optimal integration time is 48s. This novel modulation strategy significantly enhances the WMS-TDLAS system's efficiency, offering significant benefits for various applications.
