The effects of contextual certainty on tension induction and resolution.

It is known that tension is a core principle of the generation of music emotion and meaning, and supposed to be induced by prediction in process of music listening. Using EEG and behavioral rating, the current research investigated how contextual certainty affects musical tension induction and resolution. The major results were that in the tension induction process, incongruent conditions elicited larger EN and P600 in ERP responses compared with congruent conditions, and the amplitude of P600, tension ratings were mediated by contextual certainty. In the tension resolution process, contextual certainty further affected the duration of P600 and tension ratings. For the certain conditions, tension ratings were higher, tension curves fluctuated faster, and a larger P600 was evoked in the incongruent condition compared with the congruent condition. For the uncertain conditions, there was no congruency effect on behavioral ratings and tension curves, but a larger P600 was elicited in the congruent condition. These results show that contextual certainty affects tension induction and resolution. Our findings provide a more comprehensive view on how musical prediction affects musical tension.

Interpersonal distance modulates the influence of social observation on prosocial behaviour: An event-related potential (ERP) study

This study aimed to explore the influence of interpersonal distance and social observation on prosocial behaviour. Participants were instructed to make costly prosocial decisions towards different interpersonal distance targets (friends, acquaintances or strangers) under the (non) observable condition, with simultaneous electroencephalogram recording. The behavioural results demonstrated that participants made more prosocial choices—unaffected by social observation—towards friends than towards acquaintances and strangers; nonetheless, participants made more prosocial choices towards acquaintances and strangers under the observable than under the non-observable condition. Event-related potential results showed that when participants made prosocial decisions towards friends, the P3 and N2 amplitudes remained unchanged between the observable and non-observable conditions; however, when participants made prosocial decisions towards acquaintances and strangers, a smaller N2 and a larger P3 were observed under the observable than those under the non-observable condition. These findings suggest that prosocial behaviour towards friends is driven by social preferences regarding the welfare of others, regardless of the possibility of reputation management. However, prosocial behaviour towards acquaintances and strangers might be motivated by a positive reputation, because individuals may bear in mind the potential future benefits.

How Are Consumers Affected by Taste and Hygiene Ratings When Ordering Food Online? A Behavioral and Event-Related Potential Study.

With the rapid development of the take-out industry, taste and hygiene ratings as social-based information have been frequently used by online food-ordering platforms to facilitate consumer purchases. The present study aims to uncover the effects of taste and hygiene ratings on online food-ordering decision by incorporating behavioral and neural approaches. The behavioral results showed that a high taste rating induced a higher ordering intention than a low taste rating, and that a high hygiene rating induced a higher ordering intention than a low hygiene rating. The effect of hygiene rating on ordering intention was moderated by taste rating. Hygiene rating had a greater impact on ordering intention when the taste rating was high (vs. low). In addition, inconsistency between taste and hygiene ratings increased the cognitive load and took more time for decision-making. The event-related potential (ERP) data revealed that consumers paid more attention to a high (vs. low) taste rating in the early cognitive process, which was reflected by a larger P2. Subsequently, a more negative N2 was elicited by conflicting ratings than consistent ratings when the taste rating was low. In the relatively late decision-making process, a larger P3 was evoked by consistent than conflicting ratings, suggesting that consumers had more confidence in their decisions for consistent ratings. These findings could help restaurants understand the roles of taste and hygiene rating cues in affecting consumer behavior and prompt those restaurants to adopt effective measures to increase online sales.

P2 Manifests Subjective Evaluation of Reward Processing Under Social Comparison.

Several recent studies have found that when the other’s gain is greater, even subjects’ reward may seem like a loss and lead to a negative experience. These studies indicate the complexity of reward evaluation in the context of social comparison. The satisfaction rating of reward outcome not only depends on objective social comparison but also on subjective evaluation. However, less is known about the neural time course of subjective evaluation. Therefore, we employed a 2 (subjective evaluation: advantageous vs. disadvantageous) × 2 (comparison direction: upward vs. downward) within-subjects factorial design, in which we manipulated the reward distribution for the subjects. Electroencephalography (EEG) responses were recorded, while two subjects concurrently but independently performed a simple dot-estimation task that entailed monetary rewards. Behavioral results showed that the subjects were more satisfied with the advantageous distribution, regardless of upward or downward comparison. The analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs) revealed that disadvantageous distribution elicited a larger P2 than advantageous distribution, and this effect was not modulated by comparison direction. In contrast, the late positive potential (LPP) showed an effect of comparison direction independent of subjective evaluation. The data suggest that subjective evaluation acts upon the early stage of reward processing and manifests in the P2 component, whereas social comparison plays a role in the later appraisal process.

Mechanisms of False Alarm in Response to Fear Stimulus: An Event-Related Potential Study.

Background and ObjectiveThere is a paucity of research that has explored “False Alarm” mechanisms. In order to remedy this deficiency in knowledge, the present study used event-related potential (ERP) technology to reveal the mechanisms underlying False Alarm in response to fear stimuli.MethodsThis study selected snakes as experimental materials and the “oddball paradigm” was used to simulate the conditions of False Alarm. The mechanism underlying False Alarm was revealed by comparing cognitive processing similarities and differences between real snakes and toy snakes.ResultsEvent-related potential findings demonstrated that there was no significant difference between N1 and P2 components induced by real and toy snakes in the early processing stage. Compared with toy snakes, real snakes induced smaller N2 amplitude, larger P3 amplitude, and a shorter P3 latency at the late processing stage. The results of brain topographic mapping analysis showed that the brain regions activated by a real or toy snake were basically the same within the time windows of 110–150 and 220–270 ms, respectively. In the time window of 300–360 and 400–500 ms, the degree of brain regions activation with a real snake was significantly greater than that induced by a toy snake.ConclusionFalse Alarm is caused by the brain’s inability to distinguish, in the early stage of cognitive processing, stimulus objects with similar appearances. When the brain is able to distinguish the differences between different stimulus objects in the late stage of cognitive processing, False Alarm disappears.

Measuring Mental Workload Using ERPs Based on FIR, ICA, and MARA

Mental workload is considered to be strongly linked to human performance, and the ability to measure it accurately is key for balancing human health and work. In this study, brain signals were elicited by mental arithmetic tasks of varying difficulty to stimulate different levels of mental workload. In addition, a finite impulse response (FIR) filter, independent component analysis (ICA), and multiple artifact rejection algorithms (MARAs) were used to filter event-related potentials (ERPs). Then, the data consisting of ERPs, subjective ratings of mental workload, and task performance, were analyzed through the use of variance and Spearman’s correlation during a simulated computer task. We found that participants responded faster and performed better in the easy task condition, followed by the medium and high-difficulty conditions, which verifies the validity of the ERP filtering. Moreover, larger P2 and P3 waveforms were evoked as the task difficulty increased, and a higher task difficulty elicited a more enhanced N300. Correlation analysis revealed a negative relationship between the amplitude of P3 and the subjective ratings, and a positive relationship between the P3 amplitude and accuracy. The results presented in this paper demonstrate that a combination of FIR, ICA, and MARA methods can filter ERPs in the non-invasive real-time measurement of workload. Additionally, frontocentral P2, N3, and parietal P3 components showed differences between genders. The proposed measurement of mental workload can be useful for real-time identification of mental states and can be applied to human–computer interaction in the future.

Cognitive process in high neuroticism: incompatible flexibility in frontal brain region

Objective: This study examines the difference of interference effect in high and low neuroticism. Material and Methods: Low and high groups of neuroticism performed the congruent and incongruent Stroop Colour Word task in the Event Related Potential session. The ERP P300 was extracted and analysed. Results: High neuroticism exhibited larger P300 amplitude than low neuroticism in both congruent and incongruent condition. Conclusion: High neuroticism appraises conflict and non-conflict condition under incompatibility manner driven by prefrontal cortical top–down control. Neural Responses to Mandatory and Voluntary Donation Impact Charitable Giving Decisions: An Event-Related Potentials Study.

The present study aimed to explore the influence of donation amounts on donation decisions in different donation contexts and to reveal the psychological mechanisms. Furthermore, we focused on how to enhance individuals’ intention to donate voluntarily. We designed an experiment on donation decisions, employing event-related potentials (ERPs) to probe the effect of psychological mechanisms on donation decisions by detecting the neural basis of donation decision-making. Based on S-O-R (stimulus-organism-response) theory, we used donation contexts and donation amounts (stimuli) to induce psychological activity in the participants (organism) and then influence individual donation decision behaviors (response). Moreover, we applied psychological reactance (PR) theory to discuss the effect of donation context on decisions and the corresponding psychological process. The behavioral results showed that donation contexts (mandatory vs. voluntary) were significantly related to the donation amounts (i.e., less vs. more money that the charity received than money that the participants donated). At the ERP level, compared with mandatory donation, voluntary donation evoked a larger P2 amplitude when the charity received less money. In addition, a larger mean amplitude of LPP was elicited by voluntary donation compared to mandatory donation. This study provides practical implications for charity organizers to guide people to donate voluntarily.

The neural basis of authenticity recognition in laughter and crying

Deciding whether others’ emotions are genuine is essential for successful communication and social relationships. While previous fMRI studies suggested that differentiation between authentic and acted emotional expressions involves higher-order brain areas, the time course of authenticity discrimination is still unknown. To address this gap, we tested the impact of authenticity discrimination on event-related potentials (ERPs) related to emotion, motivational salience, and higher-order cognitive processing (N100, P200 and late positive complex, the LPC), using vocalised non-verbal expressions of sadness (crying) and happiness (laughter) in a 32-participant, within-subject study. Using a repeated measures 2-factor (authenticity, emotion) ANOVA, we show that N100’s amplitude was larger in response to authentic than acted vocalisations, particularly in cries, while P200’s was larger in response to acted vocalisations, particularly in laughs. We suggest these results point to two different mechanisms: (1) a larger N100 in response to authentic vocalisations is consistent with its link to emotional content and arousal (putatively larger amplitude for genuine emotional expressions); (2) a larger P200 in response to acted ones is in line with evidence relating it to motivational salience (putatively larger for ambiguous emotional expressions). Complementarily, a significant main effect of emotion was found on P200 and LPC amplitudes, in that the two were larger for laughs than cries, regardless of authenticity. Overall, we provide the first electroencephalographic examination of authenticity discrimination and propose that authenticity processing of others’ vocalisations is initiated early, along that of their emotional content or category, attesting for its evolutionary relevance for trust and bond formation.

The Role of Leadership Level in College Students’ Decision-Making: Evidence From Event-Related Potential Analysis

Although risk decision-making plays an important role in leadership practice, the distinction in behavior between humans with differing levels of leadership, as well as the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms involved, remain unclear. In this study, the Ultimatum Game (UG) was utilized in concert with electroencephalograms (EEG) to investigate the temporal course of cognitive and emotional processes involved in economic decision-making between high and low leadership level college students. Behavioral results from this study found that the acceptance rates in an economic transaction, when the partner was a computer under unfair/sub unfair condition, were significantly higher than in transactions with real human partners for the low leadership group, while there was no significant difference in acceptance rates for the high leadership group. Results from Event-Related Potentials (ERP) analysis further indicated that there was a larger P3 amplitude in the low leadership group than in the high leadership group. We concluded that the difference between high and low leadership groups was at least partly due to their different emotional management abilities.

A comparison of stages of attention for social and nonsocial stimuli in schizophrenia: An ERP study

Social motivation disturbances have been long observed in people with schizophrenia, yet the underlying components that drive these impairments remain unclear. Social attention is one component of social motivation and involves stages of attentional orienting, alerting/sustained attention, and executive control. It is not known at which stage the breakdown in social attention occurs in schizophrenia. The present study examined the allocation of social versus nonsocial attention at multiple stages of processing using event related potential (ERP) components. Electroencephalography from 36 outpatients with schizophrenia and 20 healthy participants was recorded during a dot probe task while viewing social/nonsocial stimuli that assessed: (1) orienting (indexed by the N1pc), (2) sustained attention (Contingent Negative Variation, [CNV]), and (3) executive control of attention during target evaluation (P300). Additionally, we analyzed correlations between the ERPs and participants' reaction times (RT) to the targets. Schizophrenia participants oriented their attention equally to social and nonsocial stimuli (N1pc), showed greater sustained attention to social than nonsocial stimuli (i.e., larger CNV), and exerted greater executive control on social trials (i.e., larger P300) than nonsocial trials, similarly to healthy participants. However, schizophrenia participants showed diminished overall sustained attention (blunted CNV) during the task, compared with healthy participants. Furthermore, greater sustained attention (larger CNV) and greater executive control (larger P300) were associated with improved behavioral performance (faster RTs) for healthy participants, but not schizophrenia participants. Together, these findings suggest there is impaired sustained attention for both social and nonsocial stimuli in schizophrenia, and their attention may not correspond with their behavior.

The time course of normalizing speech variability in vowels

To achieve perceptual constancy, listeners utilize contextual cues to normalize speech variabilities in speakers. The present study tested the time course of this cognitive process with an event-related potential (ERP) experiment. The first neurophysiological evidence of speech normalization is observed in P2 (130–250 ms), which is functionally related to phonetic and phonological processes. Furthermore, the normalization process was found to ease lexical retrieval, as indexed by smaller N400 (350–470 ms) after larger P2. A cross-language vowel perception task was carried out to further specify whether normalization was processed in the phonetic and/or phonological stage(s). It was found that both phonetic and phonological cues in the speech context contributed to vowel normalization. The results suggest that vowel normalization in the speech context can be observed in the P2 time window and largely overlaps with phonetic and phonological processes.

Facial Expression Processing of Children Orphaned by Parental HIV/AIDS: A Cross-Sectional ERP Study with Rapid Serial Visual Presentation.

Existing behavioral studies have suggested that individuals with early life stress usually show abnormal emotional processing. However, limited event-related brain potentials (ERPs) evidence was available to explore the emotional processes in children orphaned by parental HIV/AIDS (“AIDS orphans”). The current study aims to investigate whether there are behavioral and neurological obstacles in the recognition of emotional faces in AIDS orphans and also to further explore the processing stage at which the difference in facial emotion recognition exists. A total of 81 AIDS orphans and 60 non-orphan children were recruited through the local communities and school systems in Henan, China. Participants completed a computer version of the rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task while recording ERPs. Behavioral results showed that orphans displayed higher response accuracy and shorter reaction time than the control (ps < 0.05). As for the ERPs analysis, the attenuated amplitude of N170 (i.e., an early component sensitive to facial configuration) was observed in AIDS orphans compared to the non-orphan control with happy and neutral faces; P300 (i.e., an endogenous component for affective valence evaluation in emotional processing) also showed significant differences in parietal lobe between groups, the non-orphan control group produced larger P300 amplitudes than orphans (p < 0.05). The results suggested that compared to the control group, AIDS orphans showed impaired facial emotion recognition ability with reduced brain activation.

Neural Bases of Brand Reputation Effect on Extension Evaluation: An ERPs Study.

Brand extension, as a marketing strategy, is frequently utilized by enterprises to produce new products. There exist several critical factors determining its success, such as brand reputation and perceived fit. The present study adopts the event-related potentials (ERPs) method to explore the underlying neural mechanism of the joint influence of the two factors on consumers’ evaluation of brand extension. Specifically, consumers were presented with a brand with corporate social responsibility (CSR) or corporate ability (CA) reputation, following attached to an extension product (high fit vs. low fit). And then, they were given a 5-point scale to report their acceptance intention (AI) toward the brand extension. Behavioral data showed a higher AI and a shorter reaction time for high fit in contrast to low fit conditions. For low fit conditions, consumers were more inclined to accept the extension product with a brand with CSR than CA reputation. Neurophysiologically, CSR reputation evoked a larger P2 amplitude and LPP amplitude than CA reputation. Moreover, the low fit conditions elicited a more positive LPP amplitude than the high fit conditions in the context of a brand with a CSR reputation. Yet, for a brand with a CA reputation, the effect of perceived fit was not found. These results may reflect early attention resources engagement and altruistic motivation at the late stage during brand extension evaluation. The findings provided neurological evidence for which of the two types of brand reputation (CSR vs. CA) have a more positive effect on brand extension.

Age- and gender-related differences in verbal semantic processing: the development of normative electrophysiological data in the Flemish population

ABSTRACT Categorical and associative relationships among words are two key forms of semantic knowledge. In this study, we examined ageing and gender effects on the processing of both types of semantic relationships by using the event-related potential technique. Moreover, we aimed to develop normative electrophysiological data for clinical purposes. One hundred and ten healthy subjects were divided among three age groups and subjected to two auditory word priming paradigms. Early auditory processing was influenced by increasing age as shown by larger P1 amplitudes and by delayed onsets of the N1 and P2. Conversely, ageing effects on the main N400 effect were limited to an increased right hemispheric lateralisation pattern for associative relationships. Gender effects could be demonstrated, with women showing larger P2 amplitudes and larger semantic priming effects in comparison to men. The interpretation of these findings is discussed and the practical utility of the obtained normative data is emphasised.

The Differential Effects of Anger and Sadness on Intertemporal Choice: An ERP Study.

Previous research has taken a valence-based approach to examine the carryover effects of incidental emotions on intertemporal choices. However, recent studies have begun to explore the effects of specific emotions on intertemporal choices. In this study, we investigated how anger and sadness influenced intertemporal choices using event-related potentials (ERPs). Behavioral results showed that, compared with neutral prime, anger prime was associated with more preference for delayed rewards, whereas sad prime did not change individuals’ choice preference. Specifically, anger prime yielded a shorter response time than sad prime for the difficult-to-select choices. ERP results found that, compared with neutral and sad primes, anger prime elicited larger P1 in the fronto-central and parietal areas, larger P2 in the fronto-central area, and larger P3 in the parietal area during the evaluation stage. These findings suggest that there are differential carryover effects of anger and sadness on intertemporal choice. This study provides enlightenment on the significance of understanding how incidental emotions affect individuals’ intertemporal choices.

Temporal course of the sign effect in intertemporal choice

ABSTRACT The sign effect in intertemporal choice means that people typically discount delayed gains more than losses. The lack of a sign effect is associated with problematic behaviours, such as debt, obesity, and smoking. This study investigates the temporal course of the sign effect in intertemporal choice using event-related potentials (ERPs). ERP components were recorded and analysed in the evaluation and choice stages of the intertemporal choice task. Behavioural results found that the sign effect in the loss situation yielded a higher rate of immediate choices than in the gain situation. ERP results found that the gain situation elicited a larger P3. However, the loss situation elicited a larger N400 in the choice stage, indicating that loss situations involve more conflict processing. Gain and loss situations were differentiated in their effects on temporal dynamics of neural activity in intertemporal decision-making, extending the knowledge about sign effect temporal processing in intertemporal choice.

How working memory capacity modulates the time course of indirect replies comprehension: an event-related potential study

ABSTRACT To achieve successful communication, people should decode not only the literal meaning of an utterance, but also the intended meanings conveyed by the speaker. In the present study, event-related potential (ERP) technique was used to explore how working memory capacity modulates the processes of indirect replies comprehension. Conversations of Speaker A and Speaker B were constructed. Speaker A’s question renders Speaker B’s reply to be either direct or indirect replies. Participants of high and low working memory span were instructed to read for comprehension. Our results showed that for the high span group, indirect replies elicited a larger P200, a larger P300 and a larger delayed Late Positive Component (LPC) compared with direct replies. While for the low span group, only a delayed LPC effect was elicited by indirect replies. These findings provide evidence that readers’ working memory capacity modulates the early detection and immediate processing of indirect replies.

When one pseudoword elicits larger P600 than another: a study on the role of reprocessing in anomalous sentence comprehension

ABSTRACT Reprocessing has been speculated to be a late higher-level cognitive process in the P600 time window in event-related potential (ERP) studies. However, uncertainties regarding the P600 as an index of reprocessing have obscured the role of reprocessing in sentence comprehension. In this study, we compared meaningless pseudowords with or without a homophonic repairing clue (homophonic pseudoword vs. ordinary pseudoword) and semantically-plus-syntactically violated real words (doubly violated) to investigate the role of reprocessing in language comprehension. All anomalous conditions elicited significant typical central-parietal P600 effects. The homophonic pseudoword condition elicited a significantly larger P600 effect than the other two anomalous conditions. No significant difference was found between the P600 effects in the ordinary pseudoword and the doubly violated real-word conditions. These results demonstrate an association between reprocessing and the observed P600 effects, supporting an active role of reprocessing in sentence comprehension. Possible implications for language processing models are also discussed.

Influence of negative mood on restrained eaters’ memory suppression of food cues: An event-related potentials study

Negative mood has been found to be a critical trigger for overeating in restrained eaters. The ability to suppress thinking of palatable food cues is crucial to control hedonic eating; nevertheless, little research has been conducted to explore inhibitory control in cognitive processes among restrained eaters. To address this gap, this study primed restrained eaters with negative (n = 23) or neutral emotions (n = 24) and applied a Think/No-think paradigm to explore their retrieval facilitation/suppression ability for food cues, while recording Electroencephalogram (EEG) data. Results indicated that the recall rate of the No-think condition (retrieval suppressing task) was higher than the Think condition (retrieval task). Negative affect did not influence the recall rate, but it did evoke smaller N2 amplitudes, larger P2 and P3 amplitudes, as well as late positive component (LPC) amplitudes. Among these components, P2 evoked by the No-think and Think conditions was larger than the perceptual control condition. Our findings suggested that in negative moods, restrained eaters need to allocate more attentional resources to suppress food cues. The findings further demonstrated that the influence of negative moods appeared at an early stage of cognitive processing and caused a resource depletion in memory suppression. This research provides a neurophysiological basis for understanding emotional influences on the process of restrained eaters’ inhibition control for external food cues.
