Mode Transition Of A Flexible Film Motion In The Circular Cylinder Wake

The fluid-structure interaction between a flexible film and the wake of a circular cylinder is an abstract of a series of natural phenomena like flag flapping and fish swimming. Diverse patterns of both solid deformation and fluid dynamics arise in this coupling system as the nondimensional parameters are varied. In our recent experiments, we find that beyond the extensively studied periodic coupling process, irregular processes also emerge in this system under specific conditions. However, due to the complexity inherent in the irregular coupling processes, no in-depth investigation into this topic is available yet. In this work, we delve into the irregular aperiodic flutter of a flexible film behind a circular cylinder in the uniform flow as well as the related irregular evolution of flow structures. Two representative cases of film streamwise length (L/D) pertinent to the irregular process, specifically L/D=3 and L/D=4, have been investigated experimentally in the wind tunnel with time-resolved synchronized measurements of both film deformation and flow field. Continuous wavelet transform and virtual dye visualization are employed to extract the time-frequency characteristics of film motion and Lagrangian coherent structures in the flow fields during the film’s irregular flutter, respectively. It is determined that the irregular flutter is aperiodic in terms of the overall view, but it also encompasses transient quasi-periodic stages as its motion modes alter. Hence, we term this irregular flutter as the “hybrid flutter” state. In the quasi-periodic stages of the hybrid flutter, the large-scale vortex structures are periodically formed on the surfaces of the film and evolve in the wake as a Kármán vortex street. The periodic formation of large-scale vortices exerts periodic alternating force on the film, which, therefore, leads to the quasi-periodic flutter of the film with the second-order mode. By comparison, the aperiodic stage entails the significant extension of the separated shear layers in such a way that the whole film is enveloped by the shear layers; then, large-scale vortices are formed downstream of the film’s trailing edge. In this scenario, no periodic force is acted on the film; as a result, the film flutters aperiodically with the first-order mode.

Integrated Optical Diagnostics Of Cyclopentane Sprays To Characterize Transcritical Phase Transitions

This research investigates spray phase transitions under subcritical and transcritical conditions relevant to high-pressure combustion systems. Using advanced optical diagnostic techniques, including shadowgraphy (SH), Mie scattering (MS), and infrared radiation (IR) measurements, the study focuses on cyclopentane sprays in a high-pressure, high-temperature chamber filled with gaseous nitrogen. Three cases are studied to understand spray behavior under varying injection conditions. SH and MS analyses reveal significant differences across the cases. As the chamber temperature increases, the liquid core length shortens, indicating enhanced vaporization. This is particularly evident in the MS images, where step-like transitions in the axial distribution highlight abrupt phase changes from liquid to gas in subcritical conditions. Such transitions are absent under supercritical conditions, suggesting a smoother phase transition process. IR measurements provide additional insights into the spray dynamics, especially under transcritical conditions. The IR images display complex downstream (at x/D > 125) signal patterns with bimodal distributions. The application of inverse Abel deconvolution highlights negative intensities near the spray axis downstream, indicative of regions near the pseudo-critical temperature. This phenomenon, characterized by blocked background radiation due to critical opalescence, offers indirect evidence of the pseudo-critical temperature and the associated phase transition dynamics. Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) analysis identifies dominant frequencies around 4.5 kHz, corresponding to injection pressure fluctuations. This correlation suggests that injection pressure variations significantly influence spray fluctuations. Differences in mode shapes among the cases are also observed; lateral fluctuations near the injector nozzle exit are present in Cases 1 and 2 but not in Case 3. Axial fluctuations beyond a certain length are consistent in all cases. The lateral fluctuations are related to the chamber pressure and the potential large-scale vortex formation or cavitation in the nozzle. The combined use of SH, MS, and IR methodologies provides a comprehensive understanding of transcritical spray dynamics, emphasizing the effectiveness of combining multiple optical diagnostic techniques. These findings will improve numerical simulations and contribute to the development of more efficient high-pressure combustion systems. The research underscores the complexity of phase transitions in sprays and the critical role of precise diagnostics in the advancement of combustion technology.

Large-scale vortex formation in three-dimensional rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection

Numerical experiments are performed on three-dimensional thermal convection between parallel plates in a rotating system with a larger horizontal region than in previous studies. It is confirmed that a large-scale vortex (LSV) with positive vorticity (cyclonic) is formed over a significant part of the region and its horizontal size increases if the horizontal region is extended. The correlation analysis in the vertical direction shows that the small-scale motion has a typical structure of the baroclinic vortex of thermal convection in the rotating system, whereas the large-scale motion is a barotropic vortex that is not associated with thermal convection. A horizontal spectral analysis of the individual terms in the kinetic energy equation reveals that the nonlinear effect of the small-scale vortex motion caused by the buoyancy force induces a large-scale toroidal component, and that the LSV is maintained by the balance between the nonlinear effect and the viscous dissipation of the large-scale motion. The results of this analysis indicate the importance of kinetic energy damping mechanism for the appearance of LSVs. When weak damping operates at larger scales, it is expected that the maximum extent of the vortex appears even if the horizontal region is extended further. On the other hand, the emergence of LSVs will be prevented when strong enough damping is effective at larger scales.

Cavitation suppression and transformation of turbulence structure in the cross flow around a circular cylinder: Surface morphology and wettability effects

Passive methods of flow and cavitation control appear to offer some of the best prospects in the field of hydraulic engineering and marine applications. In this article, we aimed at an experimental examination of the effect of wall roughness/wettability on the occurrence of cavitation and turbulence structure in the cross flow around and in the wake of a circular cylinder in two characteristic regimes. For this, we used three test bodies with different surface morphologies: smooth (reference), micro-scale irregularities (rough) and regular large-scale (of the order of a millimeter) texture (finned). Using high-speed imaging to observe vapor cavities, we revealed that cavitation is noticeably suppressed by both types of roughness. Applying the method of vapor phase detection (Pervunin et al., 2021), this finding was then quantitatively confirmed through an in-depth analysis of an ensemble of instantaneous velocity fields measured by PIV, indicating that modification of wall morphology is an effective method of cavitation control. The procedure of statistical vector filtration (Heinz et al., 2004) allowed us to remove outliers from the velocity fields and, thus, calculate various turbulence characteristics, including higher-order moments (i.e., the coefficients of skewness and excess). Wall irregularities were found to significantly affect the turbulence structure of the wake flow, but the higher-order moments downstream of the modified-surface cylinders turned out to be unexpectedly insensitive to a change in the flow regime, as opposed to the smooth one. Regardless of the type of surface morphology, the influence of roughness on the mechanism of formation of large-scale vortices and their characteristics was weakened. However, it caused overall disorganization of liquid motion in the cylinder wake, thus making local flow conditions highly unsteady. In addition, this process became more chaotic with an increase in the scale of irregularities.

Numerical study on the cavitation instability from the perspectives of pressure change and hydrodynamics evolution in the cavitating flow over a hydrofoil

The objective of this study is to investigate cavitation instability by analyzing the pressure change and hydrodynamics evolution in the cavitating flow over a hydrofoil. Two-dimensional (2D) simulation results indicate that the multi-peak pressure features are influenced by the position on the hydrofoil surface. The increased cavitation number in a certain range aggravates the oscillation of partial cavitation and promotes the cavity change, then leads to the occurrence of higher peak pressure and more complicated fluctuation frequency. The lift coefficient presents a near-linear increasing trend due to the extended low-pressure area on the suction surface and the suppression on the vortex generation in the stable development stage of sheet cavity. The interaction between the vortex with different directions on the trailing edge dominates the fluctuation of lift coefficient. The differences in three-dimensional (3D) cavitating flows with constant velocity inlet and sinusoidal velocity inlet are the flow separation point distribution and vortex changes. More separation points form in the downstream of the hydrofoil due to more cloud cavity reattachment behaviours for sinusoidal velocity inlet. Furthermore, the sinusoidal velocity inlet promotes a more violent cavity detachment and the large-scale vortex formation, which enhances the fluctuations of pressure change, lift and drag coefficient.

Effects of kinematic and magnetic boundary conditions on the dynamics of convection-driven plane layer dynamos

Rapidly rotating convection-driven dynamos are investigated under different kinematic and magnetic boundary conditions using direct numerical simulations. At a fixed rotation rate, represented by the Ekman number$Ek=5\times 10^{-7}$, the thermal forcing is varied from$2$to$20$times its value at the onset of convection ($\mathcal {R}=Ra/Ra_c=2\unicode{x2013}20$, where$Ra$is the Rayleigh number), keeping the fluid properties constant ($Pr=Pr_m=1$, where$Pr$and$Pr_m$are the thermal and magnetic Prandtl numbers). The statistical behaviour of the dynamos, including the force balance, energetics, and heat transport, depends on the boundary conditions that dictate both the boundary layer and the interior dynamics. At a fixed thermal forcing ($\mathcal {R}=3$), the structure and strength of the magnetic field produced by the dynamos, especially near the walls, depend on both velocity and magnetic boundary conditions. Though the leading-order force balance in the bulk remains geostrophic, the Lorentz force becomes comparable to the Coriolis force inside the thermal boundary layer with no-slip, perfectly conducting conditions. In this case, a term signifying the work done by the Lorentz force in the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) equation is found to have some components that extract energy from the velocity field to produce the magnetic field, while some other components extract energy from the magnetic field to produce TKE. However, with no-slip, pseudo-vacuum conditions, all the components of the work done by the Lorentz force perform unidirectional energy transfer to produce magnetic energy from the kinetic energy of the fluid to sustain dynamo action. We find heat transfer enhancement in the rotating dynamo convection, as compared with non-magnetic rotating convection, with the peak enhancement lying in the range$\mathcal {R}=3\unicode{x2013}4$. For free-slip conditions, in the absence of an Ekman layer, the dynamo action may alter the heat transport significantly by suppressing the formation of large-scale vortices. However, the highest heat transfer enhancement is found at$\mathcal {R}=3$with no-slip, perfectly conducting walls, which can be attributed to a local magnetorelaxation of the rotational constraint due to enhanced Lorentz force inside the thermal boundary layer.

Vortex Structurization of Swirl Flows in Energy Systems

The physical factors and conditions leading to the formation of stable vortex structures in internal turbulent swirling currents occurring in complex channels of various energy and heat exchangers are considered. The possibility of applying the theory of screw flows and the equation for the rate of helicity change to determine the critical conditions for the occurrence of a deterministic vortex structure of turbulent flows and to predict the effects of the occurrence of large-scale vortex formations in various elements of energy systems is substantiated. The phenomenon of the swirl flow crisis is described. It is shown that the use of thermodynamic stability analysis to describe complex vortex flows makes it possible to expand the applicability of mathematical modeling methods to describe the processes of formation of vortex structures. The results of computational and theoretical modeling of vortex formation processes during the flow of a swirl flow in pipelines of variable cross-section, which are elements of pipeline systems of a nuclear power installation, are presented.

Interactions between a propagating detonation wave and circular water cloud in hydrogen/air mixture

Interactions between a propagating hydrogen/air detonation wave and circular water cloud are studied. Eulerian-Lagrangian method involving two-way gas-droplet coupling is applied. Different droplet (diameter, concentration) and cloud (diameter) properties are considered. Results show that droplet size, concentration and cloud radius have significant effects on peak pressure trajectory of the detonation wave. Three propagation modes are identified: perturbed propagation, leeward re-detonation, and detonation extinction. Leeward re-detonation is analyzed from unsteady evolutions of gas and liquid droplet quantities. The detonation is re-initiated by a local hot spot from shock focusing of upper and lower diffracted detonations. Disintegration of water droplets proceeds when the detonation wave crosses the cloud. In addition, detonation extinction is featured by quickly fading peak pressure trajectories when the detonation wave passes the larger cloud, and no local autoignition occurs in the shock focusing area. Evolutions of thermochemical structures from the shocked area in an extinction process are also studied. The transfer rates of mass, energy and momentum of detonation success and failure are analyzed. Moreover, parametric studies demonstrate that the critical cloud size to quench a detonation decreases when the droplet concentration is increased. However, when the droplet concentration is beyond 0.84 kg/m3, the critical cloud size is negligibly influenced due to small droplets. Two-phase fluid interfacial instability is observed, and the mechanism of cloud evolution is studied with the distributions of droplet, vorticity, density / pressure gradient magnitudes, and gas velocity. Analysis confirms that velocity difference (due to two-phase momentum exchange) dominates the formation of large-scale vortices from the southern and northern poles, corresponding to Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. Moreover, the influences of effective Atwood number on the evolutions of cloud morphology, vorticity, and gas velocity are evaluated. Results show that higher droplet concentration results in wider droplet dispersion range due to larger vortices.

On the evolution of vortex in locally isothermal self-gravitating discs: a parameter study

ABSTRACT Gas-rich dusty circumstellar discs observed around young stellar objects are believed to be the birthplace of planets and planetary systems. Recent observations revealed that large-scale horseshoe-like brightness asymmetries are present in dozens of transitional protoplanetary discs. Theoretical studies suggest that these brightness asymmetries bf could be caused by large-scale anticyclonic vortices triggered by the Rossby wave Instability (RWI), which can be excited at the edges of the accretionally inactive region, the dead zone edge. Since vortices may play a key role in planet formation, investigating the conditions of the onset of RWI and the long-term evolution of vortices is inevitable. The aim of our work was to explore the effect of disc geometry (the vertical thickness of the disc), viscosity, the width of the transition region at the dead zone edge, and the disc mass on the onset, lifetime, strength and evolution of vortices formed in the disc. We performed a parametric study assuming different properties for the disc and the viscosity transition by running 1980 2D hydrodynamic simulations in the locally isothermal assumption with disc self-gravity included. Our results revealed that long-lived, large-scale vortex formation favours a shallow surface density slope and low- or moderate-disc masses with Toomre Q ≲ 1 h-1, where h is the geometric aspect ratio of the disc. In general, in low viscosity models, stronger vortices form. However, rapid vortex decay and re-formation is more widespread in these discs.

Vortex Flow on the Surface Generated by the Onset of a Buoyancy-Induced Non-Boussinesq Convection in the Bulk of a Normal Liquid Helium.

The onset of the Rayleigh–Benard convection (RBC) in a heated from above normal He-I layer in a cylindrical vessel in the temperature range Tλ < T ≤ Tm (RBC in non-Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation) is attended by the emergence of a number of vortices on the free liquid surface. Here, Tλ = 2.1768 K is the temperature of the superfluid He-II–normal He-I phase transition, and the liquid density passes through a well-pronounced maximum at Tm ≈ Tλ + 6 mK. The inner vessel diameter was D = 12.4 cm, and the helium layer thickness was h ≈ 2.5 cm. The mutual interaction of the vortices between each other and their interaction with turbulent structures appeared in the layer volume during the RBC development gave rise to the formation of a vortex dipole (two large-scale vortices) on the surface. Characteristic sizes of the vortices were limited by the vessel diameter. The formation of large-scale vortices with characteristic sizes twice larger than the layer thickness can be attributed to the arising an inverse vortex cascade on the two-dimensional layer surface. Moreover, when the layer temperature exceeds Tm, convective flows in the volume decay. In the absence of the energy pumping from the bulk, the total energy of the vortex system on the surface decreases with time according to a power law.

Wake behind circular cylinder excited by spanwise non-uniform disturbances

We studied a modification of wake behind a circular cylinder using a plasma actuator. The plasma actuators were arranged in the spanwise direction of the cylinder to give temporal periodic disturbances having Strouhal number St = 0.18-2.3 with a burst ratio BR = 20 and 40%. The Reynolds number was set in a rage of Re = 4200 to 8400. Two types of plasma actuator were prepared; one is a single strip of the actuator placed at each side of the cylinder to give a spanwise uniform disturbance, and another is an array of small piece of actuators placed at the same location to create a spanwise non-uniform disturbance with temporal phase difference, φ = 0 or π, between adjacent electrodes. A conventional two-component PIV and stereo PIV was used to measure the flow field. Figure 1 shows the instantaneous spanwise component of vorticity at Re = 4200 evaluated by two-component PIV. Under no disturbance condition, the laminar shear layer extends straight to around x / d = 1.5 and then forms a wake vortex, as shown in Fig.1(a). In the case of spanwise non-uniform forcing with St = 1.09 and φ =π, rapid roll up of the initial shear layer leads to arrangement of wake vortices closer to the cylinder., as shown in Fig.1(b). With higher Strouhal number case with St = 1.09 and φ = 0, shown in Fig.1(c), a series of fine scale vortices are generated behind both side of the cylinder without forming regular Karman vortices. The spanwise non-uniform forcing was effective to suppress the formation of large scale vortices just behind the cylinder. Figure 2 shows surface of constant vorticity magnitude and vortex lines under St =1.09 and φ = π case. These were computed from a phase-averaged threecomponents velocity field evaluated by stereo PIV. The value of the surface was selected to display the boundary layer formed on the cylinder, and the vortex lines are selected to visualize the vortex structure formed in the following shear layer. A bundle of vortex lines are shaped in a wavy pattern along spanwise direction with 180 degrees out of phase to the adjacent bundle upstream of downstream. This structure, so called ‘chain-line fence structure’ was already found in planar free shear layer [Nygaard, K.J. and Glezer, A., 1990, Phys. Fluids A, 2, 461] and planar jet [Sakakibara, J., Anzai, T., 2001, Phys. Fluids, 13, 1541], but it became evident to create it in the wake of circular cylinder in this study.

Large-scale vortices and zonal flows in spherical rotating convection – CORRIGENDUM

Motivated by understanding the dynamics of stellar and planetary interiors, we have performed a set of direct numerical simulations of Boussinesq convection in a rotating full sphere. The domain is internally heated with fixed temperature and stress-free boundary conditions, but fixed heat flux and no-slip boundary conditions are also briefly considered. We particularly focus on the large-scale coherent structures and the mean zonal flows that can develop in the system. At Prandtl number of unity, as the thermal forcing (measured by the Rayleigh number) is increased above the value for the onset of convection, we find a relaxation oscillation regime, followed by a geostrophic turbulence regime. Beyond this we see for the first time the existence of large-scale coherent vortices that form on the rotation axis. All regime boundaries are well described by critical values of the convective Rossby number $Ro_c$, with transitions from oscillatory to geostrophic turbulence, and then to the large-scale vortex regime at values $Ro_c\approx 0.2$ and $Ro_c\approx 1.5$, respectively. The zonal flow is controlled by the convective Rossby number and changes its direction when the flow transitions from the geostrophic turbulence regime to the large-scale vortex regime. While the non-zonal flow speed and heat transfer can be described by the so-called inertial scaling in the geostrophic turbulence regime, the formation of large-scale vortices appears to reduce both the non-zonal flow speed and the efficiency of convective heat transfer.

Lagrangian analysis of the fluid transport induced by the interaction of two co-axial co-rotating vortex rings

In this paper, the fluid transport in the interaction of two co-axial co-rotating vortex rings are investigated. Vortex rings are generated using the piston-cylinder apparatus, and the resulting velocity fields are measured using digital particle image velocimetry. The interaction process is analysed by means of vorticity contour, as well by investigation of the Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs) defined by the ridges of the finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE). Experimental results demonstrate that two types of vortex interaction are identified, namely strong and weak interactions, respectively. For the strong interaction, the Lagrangian boundaries of the two vortex rings are merged together and form a flux window for fluid transport. For weak interaction, only the Lagrangian drift induced by the motion of the front vortex ring is observed and affects the Lagrangian boundary of the rear vortex ring. Moreover, the fluids transported in the strong interaction carry considerable momentum but no circulation. By contrast, there are nearly no fluxes occurring in the weak interaction. By tracking the variations of circulation and impulse occupied by the separated regions distinguished by the LCSs, it is found that the circulation nearly has no change, but the impulse occupied by vortex core region has significant change. In the strong interaction, the impulse of rear vortex ring decreases but the impulse of the front vortex ring increases. Based on the impulse law, it is speculated that the fluid force generated by the formation of the rear vortex rings can be enhanced. Therefore, the strong interaction between wake vortices can actually improve the propulsive efficiency of the biological systems by operating the formation of large-scale vortices.

Swirl Flow Crisis and Its Manifestation in Various Energy Systems

Conducted analytical studies have shown that in complex geometry channels with three-dimensional curvature, and a variable cross-section area, the conditions leading to large-scale vortex formation and swirl flow. In this case, not only the mode of swirl flow can be implemented, but also the effect of locking the flow due to the crisis of the swirl flow. It is shown that the crisis of swirl flow can take place in various power, motor, chemical-technological devices and other technical devices associated with the use of high-speed swirl flows of liquids or gases. A characteristic feature of such devices is the presence of large pressure losses required for the organization of flow swirling in channels of complex geometry. In the present paper, the manifestation of the swirl flow crisis is considered on the example of modeling the processes of hydrodynamics and heat exchange in the channels of an icebreaker steam generating installation.

Exploring subgrid-scale variance models in LES of lab-scale methane fire plumes

Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of the lab-scale methane fire plumes investigated experimentally by McCaffrey is performed using the steady laminar flamelet/presumed beta filtered density function model on grids of different resolution ranging from the Taylor length scale to about six times the Kolmogorov length scale. This work focuses on investigating existing subgrid (SGS) mixing models for mixture fraction variance prediction. Three different models based on the local equilibrium assumption, the variance transport equation (VTE) and the second moment transport equation (STE) are assessed. In the non-equilibrium modelling (VTE and STE), the scalar dissipation rate is modelled with an algebraic expression involving an SGS mixing time-scale. The comparison of the solutions is based on the convergence properties of LES statistics for mixture fraction, temperature and axial velocity with respect to the filter width. The simulations show that the equilibrium algebraic model is not suitable for purely buoyant flows. On the other hand, simulations performed with the transport models show that grids coarser than 1 cm cannot resolve adequately the natural laminar instability near the edge of the plume that governs the formation of large-scale vortex and, therefore, underestimate the mixing process, especially in the lower part of the continuous flame. For grid resolutions finer than 1 cm, the STE model is less sensitive to grid refinement than the VTE formulation and differences between the two models are reduced with grid refinement. The STE model predicts also a stronger mixing, resulting in a slightly larger lateral expansion of the fire plume. Predicted solutions by the two models are in quantitative agreement with the experimental data in terms of axial temperature, velocity and temperature fluctuations.

High resolution parameter study of the vertical shear instability

ABSTRACT Theoretical models of protoplanetary discs have shown the vertical shear instability (VSI) to be a prime candidate to explain turbulence in the dead zone of the disc. However, simulations of the VSI have yet to show consistent levels of key disc turbulence parameters like the stress-to-pressure ratio α. We aim to reconcile these different values by performing a parameter study on the VSI with focus on the disc density gradient p and aspect ratio h = H/R. We use full 2π 3D simulations of the disc for chosen set of both parameters. All simulations are evolved for 1000 reference orbits, at a resolution of 18 cells per h. We find that the saturated stress-to-pressure ratio in our simulations is dependent on the disc aspect ratio with a strong scaling of α∝h2.6, in contrast to the traditional α model, where viscosity scales as ν∝αh2 with a constant α. We also observe consistent formation of large scale vortices across all investigated parameters. The vortices show uniformly aspect ratios of χ ≈ 10 and radial widths of approximately 1.5H. With our findings we can reconcile the different values reported for the stress-to-pressure ratio from both isothermal and full radiation hydrodynamics models, and show long-term evolution effects of the VSI that could aide in the formation of planetesimals.

Detailed Simulation of the Nominal Flow and Temperature Conditions in a Pre-Konvoi PWR Using Coupled CFD and Neutron Kinetics

The aim of the numerical study was the detection of possible vortices in the upper part of the core of a Pre-Konvoi Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) which could lead to temperature cycling. In addition, the practical application of this Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulation exists in the full 3D analysis of the coolant flow behavior in the reactor pressure vessel of a nuclear PWR. It also helps to improve the design of future reactor types. Therefore, a CFD simulation of the flow conditions was carried out based on a complex 3D model. The geometry of the model includes the entire Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) plus all relevant internals. The core is modelled using the porous body approach, the different pressure losses along and transverse to the main flow direction were considered. The spacer-grid levels were taken into account to the extent that in these areas no cross-flow is possible. The calculation was carried out for nominal operating conditions, i.e., for full load operation. Furthermore, a prototypical End of Cycle (EOC) power distribution was assumed. For this, a power distribution was applied as obtained from a stationary full-core calculation with the 3D neutron kinetics code DYN3D. In order to be able to adequately reproduce flow vortexes, the calculation was performed transiently with suitable Detached Eddy Simulations (DES) turbulence models. The calculation showed fluctuating transverse flow in the upper part of the core, starting at the 8th spacer grid but also revealed that no large dominant vortices exists in this region. It seems that the core acts as a rectifier attenuating large-scale vortices. The analyses included several spacer grid levels in the core and showed that in some areas of the core cross-section an upward increasingly directed transversal flow to the outlet nozzle occurs. In other areas of the core cross-section, on the other hand, there is nearly any cross-flow. However, the following limitations of the model apply: In the model all fuel elements are treated identical and cross flows due to different axial pressure losses for different FA types cannot be displayed. The complex structure of the FAs (eg. flow vanes in spacer grids) could also influence the formation of large-scale vortices. Also, the possible influence of two-phase flows was not considered.

Experimental study on wake flow structures of screen cylinders using PIV

Experiments were conducted in a water flume using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to study the evolution of the vortical structures in the wakes of four types of screen cylinders at a Reynolds number of about 3200. The results were compared with that of a bare cylinder. The screen cylinders were made of stainless steel screen meshes of various porosities (37%, 48%, 61% and 67%) rolled into cylindrical shapes. Smoke wire flow visualisations in a wind tunnel were also conducted in support of the PIV tests. Depending on the porosity of the screen mesh, two vortex formation mechanisms for the screen cylinder wakes were identified. One was associated with wake instability and the other was associated with shear-layer (Kelvin-Helmholtz) convective instability which involved merging through pairing and tripling of small-scale vortices within the shear layers. The former was responsible for the formation of large-scale vortices in the bare cylinder and the screen cylinder wakes with 37% and 48% porosities, while the latter was responsible for the screen cylinder wakes with 61% and 67% porosities. The results also showed that with increasing porosity, the vortex formation region was extended farther downstream and the Reynolds shear stress, the Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE) and vortex intensity were decreased constantly.

Influence of Diesel Fuel Viscosity on Cavitating Throttle Flow Simulations under Erosive Operation Conditions.

This work investigates the effect of liquid fuel viscosity, as specific by the European Committee for Standardization 2009 (European Norm) for all automotive fuels, on the predicted cavitating flow in micro-orifice flows. The wide range of viscosities allowed leads to a significant variation in orifice nominal Reynolds numbers for the same pressure drop across the orifice. This in turn, is found to affect flow detachment and the formation of large-scale vortices and microscale turbulence. A pressure-based compressible solver is used on the filtered Navier–Stokes equations using the multifluid approach; separate velocity fields are solved for each phase, which share a common pressure. The rates of evaporation and condensation are evaluated with a simplified model based on the Rayleigh–Plesset equation; the coherent structure model is adopted for the subgrid scale modeling in the momentum conservation equation. The test case simulated is a well-reported benchmark throttled flow channel geometry, referred to as “I-channel”; this has allowed for easy optical access for which flow visualization and laser-induced fluorescence measurements allowed for validation of the developed methodology. Despite its simplicity, the I-channel geometry is found to reproduce the most characteristic flow features prevailing in high-speed flows realized in cavitating fuel injectors. Subsequently, the effect of liquid viscosity on integral mass flow, velocity profiles, vapor cavity distribution, and pressure peaks indicating locations prone to cavitation erosion is reported.
