The article is devoted to the 100th anniversary of the birthday of the doctor of philological sciences, professor Dmytro Kharytonovych Barannyk (December 15, 1923 — January 30, 2009). The works of D. H. Barannyk are a significant contribution to the Ukrainian language studies. And such issues as the systematization of functional-stylistic varieties of monologue, the determination of typological features of the language structure and intonation of a number of functional varieties of oral monologue, were first covered in D. Kh. Barannyk’s work «Oral monologue». The high authority of D. H. Barannyk in Ukrainian linguistic science is proven by the fact that he was a member of the bureau of the Ukrainian Committee of Slavists, a member of the republican Scientific Problem Council, of several scientific publications editorial boards, in particular the journal «Movoznavstvo», the interdepartmental collection «Ukrainian Linguistics» (Kyiv) and others. D. Kh. Barannyk was a member of the Ukrainian National Commission on Spelling under the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. Participant of the X International Congress of Linguists (Bucharest, 1967), IX and XI International Congresses of Slavists (Kyiv, 1983; Bratislava, 1993). Dmytro Kharytonovych educated a whole constellation of Ukrainian linguists — more than thirty. The scientific legacy of Professor D. Kh. Barannyk served as a foundation and model for young language researchers. The interest in his works is not accidental, because they are characterized by high quality, concentration on key problems, major directions of linguistic science, the clarification of which is especially important for understanding the specifics of the development of the Ukrainian language at the current stage.

Language and health studies in the era of holistic health: Achievements and prospects

Language and health studies is scientific, pioneering and promising in nature given the close yet intricate relationship between human’s language and health. A diverse range of research topics encompasses the panorama of language and health studies, with the overarching objective of promoting the holistic well-being of individuals across the entire spectrum of age demographics, spanning from children, through adults, to the elderly. The present systematic review corroborates a flourishing trajectory of language and health research over the past three decades. Language disorders and speech-language pathology are among the most critical research topics in the field, with a primary focus on diagnosis and intervention. There are also rich investigations of language and mental health disorders in atypical populations. Clinical analysis, applied conversation analysis and narrative medicine are the three important approaches to the examination of communication in medical and healthcare interactions, which is crucial to public health promotion. The application of cutting-edge technologies and interdisciplinary cooperation can provide innovative solutions to the difficulties and challenges that arise in this field.

The effectiveness of note taking through exposure to L2 input: A meta-analysis

AbstractThere has been increasing interest in the effects of note taking in second language (L2) research. However, no meta-analysis has been conducted to examine the relationship between note taking and learning through exposure to L2 input. We retrieved 28 effect sizes from 21 studies (N = 1992) to explore the overall effects of note taking as well as to examine the extent to which the effectiveness of note taking is likely to vary as a function of a set of potential moderators (i.e., learner variables, treatment variables, note-taking features, learning target, and measurement type). Results revealed that note taking had a small to medium positive overall effect on learning through exposure to L2 input (g = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.24–0.88). Subsequent moderator analyses revealed that variability in the size of note-taking effects across studies was explained by learner variables (context, region, orthographic scripts, institutional level), treatment variables (mode of input, material type), note-taking features (note-taking behavior, number of note-taking sessions, provision and type of note-taking strategy instruction, total length of instruction, opportunity to review notes), learning target, and measurement type. Based on the obtained findings, teachers are recommended to incorporate note taking in L2 classrooms. Pedagogical suggestions and directions for future research are also provided.

Working Memory and Second Language Oral Production: A Five-Year Systematic Review

This article presents a comprehensive synthesis of the literature exploring the role of working memory in second language (L2) oral production. It systematically reviewed nine studies investigating the associations between working memory and L2 speaking, focusing on research foci, working memory measurement, speaking tasks, and performance. The synthesized results revealed a positive correlation between working memory and language production aspects, including accuracy, lexical complexity, and fluency. Learners with stronger working memory demonstrated superior performance, particularly in complex tasks. However, some studies did not find a significant predictive relationship, possibly due to sample homogeneity, sampling heterogeneity, or task complexity. This systematic review sheds light on the crucial role of working memory in L2 oral production and provides valuable insights for language educators and researchers.

Natural languages and RNA virus evolution.

Information concepts from physics, mathematics and computer science support many areas of research in biology. Their focus is on objective information, which provides correlations and patterns related to objects, processes, marks and signals. In these approaches only the quantitative aspects of the meaning of the information is relevant. In other areas of biology, 'meaningful information', which is subjective in nature, relies on the physiology of the organism's sensory organs and on the interpretation of the perceived signals, which is then translated into action, even if this is only mental (in brained animals). Information is involved, in terms of both amount and quality. Here we contextualize and review the main theories that deal with 'meaningful-information' at a molecular level from different areas of natural language research, namely biosemiotics, code-biology, biocommunication and biohermeneutics. As this information mediates between the organism and its environment, we emphasize how such theories compare with the neo-Darwinian treatment of genetic information, and how they project onto the rapid evolution of RNA viruses.

Women's experiences of online antenatal education: An integrative literature review.

To identify what is currently known about how women experience online antenatal education. Integrative literature review. This integrative review applied the five-stage methodological framework outlined by Whittemore and Knafl (2005), supporting rigour in problem identification, selection and critical appraisal of quality literature, data analysis and synthesis of findings. A literature search was conducted in May/June 2022, utilizing databases including OVID Embase, CINAHL, Joanna Briggs Institute EBP database, Nursing and Allied Health database, Wiley Online Library, Google scholar search engine and related reference lists. The search was limited to English language and primary research articles published in the last 10-year period (2012-2022). 12 articles met inclusion criteria. Three primary themes were identified: Comprehensibility: Looking back - understanding women's needs and preferences; Manageability: In the moment - flexibility versus social connection; and Meaningfulness & sustainability: Looking forward - the future of digital maternity education. Findings identified a marked digital divide for women accessing online antenatal education, placing vulnerable women at risk of continuing inequity. E-health literacy frameworks need to be implemented to create genuine accessibility, comprehensibility and cultural responsiveness to best meet the needs of users. As digital health is an emerging field, there is strong evidence that online antenatal education requires further evaluation to better meet the needs of pregnant women and their support people. Enhancing digital health literacy for health professionals will also promote a greater understanding for how to uphold and support the socio-technical dimensions of online service delivery. There were no patient or public contributions as part of this integrative review of the literature.

Analysis of Sisingaan Performance in Subang From Language Perspective

Sisingaan performances are one manifestation of the results of cultural societies in which there is an auditive, visual, and text message. The research carried out semantic-semiotic and etnopedagogy studies on sisingaan performances in Subang Regency from a language perspective. The method used is descriptive qualitative and in dissecting this research the approaches were semantics, semiotics and ethnopedaogy. In language research, the sisingaan is known to experience a shift in meaning based on its function and existence. Sisingaan characterization is interpreted as a form of resistance to colonialism. The result showed that the denotation of Sisingaan itself was made from wood, yarn and so on. Then, the connotation stage sisingaan art evolves its meaning into something that is historically principle and very rich in philosophy. Sisingaan is interpreted as one of the ways to convey criticism and resistance to the invaders, this is indicated by the many writings in the media which regularly write that sisingaan is a symbol of resistance to invaders (Dutch and British). Society symbolizes sisingaan structure as symbols that have meaning, four people who guide sisingaan are symbolized as oppressed people, who are forced to submit to invaders, then sisingaan is symbolized as occupying power over the occupied territories, in this matter is the Subang district. Furthermore, the child who occupies the lion is symbolized as the young generation of the nation who will continue the resistance against the invaders and is predicted to become the leader of the nation.

CEO overconfidence and financial reporting complexity: evidence from textual analysis

PurposeThis study investigates the relationship between the Chief Executive Officer's (CEO) overconfidence and financial reporting complexity in Iran, a context characterized by weak corporate governance and heightened managerial discretion.Design/methodology/approachThe sample consists of 1,445 firm-year observations from 2010 to 2021. CEO overconfidence (CEOOC) is evaluated using an investment-based index, specifically capital expenditures. Financial reporting complexity (Complexity) is measured through textual features, particularly three readability measures (Fog, SMOG and ARI) extracted from annual financial statements. The ordinary least squares (OLS) regression is employed to test the research hypothesis.FindingsResults suggest that CEOOC is positively related to Complexity, leading to reduced readability. Additionally, robustness analyses demonstrate that the relationship between CEOOC and Complexity is more distinct and significant for firms with lower profitability than those with higher profitability. This implies that overconfident CEOs in underperforming firms tend to increase complexity. Also, firms with better financial performance present a more positive tone in their annual financial statements, reflecting their superior performance. The findings remain robust to alternative measures of CEOOC and Complexity and are consistent after accounting for endogeneity issues using firm fixed-effects, propensity score matching (PSM), entropy balancing approach and instrumental variables method.Research limitations/implicationsThis study adds to the literature by delving into the effect of CEOs' overconfidence on financial reporting complexity, a facet not thoroughly investigated in prior studies. The paper pioneers the use of textual analysis techniques on Persian texts, marking a unique approach in financial reporting and a first for the Persian language. However, due to the inherent challenges of text mining and feature extraction, the results should be approached with caution.Practical implicationsThe insights from this study can guide investors in understanding the potential repercussions of CEOOC on financial reporting complexity. This will assist them in making informed investment decisions and monitoring the financial reporting practices of their invested companies. Policymakers and regulators can also reference this research when formulating policies to enhance financial reporting quality and ensure capital market transparency. The innovative application of textual analysis in this study might spur further research in other languages and contexts.Originality/valueThis research stands as the inaugural study to explore the relationship between CEOs' overconfidence and financial reporting complexity in both developed and developing capital markets. It thereby broadens the extant literature to include diverse capital market environments.

Pseudo-Directive Speech Act in the Javanese Language: Culture-Specific Pragmatic Perspective.

This study aims to illustrate the diverse modes and implications of pseudo-directive speech acts in Javanese, specifically emphasizing the Jogjakarta area. This field of pragmatics has garnered heightened attention in recent decades. However, it is worth noting that language researchers have not thoroughly examined these pragmatic studies and have not been extensively explored in linguistics. The primary data source of the study consists of excerpts of verbal expressions within the familial context. The provenance of the locational data can be traced to a familial unit with a cultural legacy deeply embedded in Javanese customs. The data were collected using observation and participation methodologies, employing advanced techniques of recording and note taking. The data were categorized and characterized to identify the various data types and formats. The tabulated results of classification and typification are presented to triangulate theory through expert validation and justification of theories. The method of contextual analysis was utilized to conduct the data analysis that relies on the pragmatic context. The study's findings indicate the following: The Javanese language encompasses various modes of pseudo-directive utterances, such as commanding, ordering, suggesting, insinuating, and recommending. In addition, the Javanese language encompasses pseudo-directive pragmatics such as warning, prohibiting, reminding, suggesting, and commanding. This research will significantly assist in formulating a pragmatic framework that considers cultural factors, as other linguistic phenomena in various regional languages remain unresolved.

Challenges in psycholinguistic research of the Uzbek language: a comprehensive review

This study delves into the intricate landscape of psycholinguistic research on the Uzbek language, aiming to uncover and address the challenges inherent in this fascinating field of study. As the intersection of psychology and linguistics, psycholinguistics explores the cognitive processes involved in language comprehension, production, and acquisition. In the context of the Uzbek language, which holds a rich linguistic and cultural tapestry, understanding the nuances of psycholinguistic phenomena becomes a complex endeavour. The abstract explores key challenges faced by researchers in the psycholinguistic examination of the Uzbek language, considering factors such as linguistic diversity, cultural influences, and the evolving nature of language use. The study also investigates methodological hurdles, technological limitations, and the need for context-specific approaches in psycholinguistic experimentation. Through a thorough examination of these challenges, this research aims to contribute valuable insights to the field, providing a foundation for future studies and fostering a deeper understanding of the psycholinguistic intricacies inherent in the Uzbek language.

The history and current situation of the Hmong writing system

The Hmong, or Miao, is a worldwide ethnic group. The Hmong writing system has developed over the centuries, with different writings produced successively in different historical periods. This study analyses several typical Hmong writing systems from a philological perspective and discusses the impact of history and human planning activities on creating and developing writing systems. The findings show the following. (1) The font of Hmong writing includes graphic style and stroke style, and the glyph of Xiangxi Square Writing has been squared. Some Hmong writing systems use the letter as a symbolic form, the syllable as a language unit and the phonetic expression as an expression method. (2) Social background and language planning activities were significant factors that influenced the creation and development of Hmong writing forms and structures. Analysing the Hmong writing system from a philological perspective is a significant reference for future Hmong language research and world language study. Exploring the factors affecting the development of the Hmong writing system is of great significance for protecting Hmong culture and the diversity of world civilizations.

Contrastive Analysis Between Lio Language And English (A Phonological View)

This ressearch discusses the comparison of two languages, namely Lio and English, with Lio as the regional language or language of origin and English as the target language. In this study limited the study to comparing how many vowels and consonants there are from each language, after researchers know the number of vowels and consonants present in Lio language researchers compare with vowels and consonants in English to find out where the similarities and differences between vowel phonemes and consonant phonemes from the two languages are located. In this study the author used a qualitative descriptive method with the aim of knowing the phonemes of vowels and consonants in Lio and English, then from the phonemes of vowels and consonants the author compared to find out the location of similarities and differences between the two languages, with the data collection technique used was to conduct interviews with local communities and the results of the interviews were recorded and analyzed by the author. From this study it can be seen that:: (1). There are 5 types of vowels, namely; a, I, u, e, o in Lio and English, (2) there are 20 types of consonants in Lio b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, r, s,t,w and 24 consonants in English, namely; B,C,D,F,G,H,J,K,L,M,N,P,Q,R,S,T,V,W,X,Y,Z. (3) The difference between the two languages lies in the sound of speech and consonants. Different consonants are: consonants q, y, z, x, which exist in Lio besides that there are changes in pronunciation sounds in English vowels and consonants while in Lio language there can be no sound changes in both vowels and consonants. (4) The similarities between the two languages are vowels of both languages and some consonants4.

Commonalities and Differences of the Language Policy in Russian-speaking Countries along “The Belt and Road”

"Bel and Road Initiative"， which is also known as the “Silk Road Economic Belt” or the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road", is a new model of national cooperation advocated by China and is considered to be the economic cooperation zone with the widest coverage in the world today. The Russian-speaking countries along "Belt and Road Initiative" refer to the countries where "Russian" is recognized by the constitution as the national language, official language, interracial common language, or exists in the form of mother tongue, minority language, etc., thus forming a "language – state – group" with Russian as its link. Due to limited length, this paper mainly studies the "three East Slavic Countries", namely Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and the "Five Central Asian Countries", namely Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Russian-speaking countries along the "Belt and Road" have complicated historical, ethnic, political, religious, linguistic and other links. This also leads to the complexity of language governance in various countries under the background of global governance and shows commonalities and differences in the basic direction of language policy in various countries. The commonalities are mainly manifested in the hierarchy of forms of language policy, the stages in history, the politics of function and the multiplicity of objectives. The differences are mainly manifested in the language abilities of countries, the degree of national language policy and the guidance of dealing with the relationship with Russian on the premise of language policy. The commonalities and differences can help us fully understand the function of language in boosting economic exchanges, the positive and negative energy contained in language, the relationship between language and national security, and the relationship between language and cultural discourse power in the context of the "Belt and Road Initiative".The extraction of the commonalities and differences of language policy in Russian-speaking countries along the "Belt and Road "is conducive to promoting the transformation of language research from a Chinese perspective to a global perspective. The cooperation in the era of globalization is always multiple and non-unitary. In the context of the "Belt and Road Initiative", under the cooperation framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and in the process of the "Belt and Road Alliance", that is, the alliance of "Belt and Road" and the "Eurasian Economic Union", these Russian-speaking countries are not only important nodes along the "Belt and Road", but also important partners of China’s cooperation and exchanges in different frameworks of exchanges.The current prominent problems of Russian-speaking countries along the "Belt and Road" include the status of the national language and interracial common languages within the country, as well as the issues of language independence, cultural independence, and language sovereignty between countries. All these issues have essentially surpassed the basic function of language itself. In the vision of a community of shared future for mankind, the highest level of communication between sovereign countries is mutual communication and mutual learning based on mutual respect for culture. Only when we have a clear understanding of the rule of law in the countries along “the Belt and Road”, including their language policies, language plannings and language strategies, can the implementation of the "Belt and Road Initiative" be better and comprehensively supported.

Shiken Across 23 Years: James Dean Brown’s Statistical Advice

J.D. Brown (JD) served as the author of an instructional column titled "Statistics Corner" in the Shiken: JALTTesting & Evaluation SIG Newsletter for an extensive period spanning over two decades, from 1997 to 2019.This publication was under the auspices of the Testing and Evaluation Special Interest Group, a subdivision ofthe Japanese Association of Language Teaching. The audience for the columns was diverse, and includedlanguage teachers, graduate students, and language practitioners encountering real-world issues with languageassessment. Throughout his tenure, JD addressed over 40 reader-submitted inquiries related to testing andquantitative research. The subjects explored in these columns can be broadly classified into two thematic areas:Second Language Testing and Second Language Research. This present article aims to provide an exhaustiveexamination of the diverse range of topics covered within each of these thematic categories and to trace theevolution of these subjects over the course of JD’s twenty-year involvement with the newsletter. Its goal is tohelp situate JD’s abiding concern with connecting theory and practice.

James Dean Brown’s 50 Years of Work in Second Language Studies: A Systematic Review

Panahi and Mohebbi review James Dean Brown’s 50-years of research in language testing, curriculum development and research statistics with reference to an impressionistic framework for analysis containing two components with their subcomponents: Annotations (i.e., briefing and implications) and main concepts and themes (i.e., testing and teaching terminology, research design, research instruments, data analysis, and domains). The review was carried out in two phases: In Phase I, we (Ali Panahi and Hassan Mohebbi) reviewed Brown’s all works and extracted approximately 1100 main concepts and themes leading to 28 main entries for testing and teaching terminology. The issues he has examined are much more extensive; the first 10 topics and themes most widely investigated, in the order of frequency, are language testing and assessment, research and statistics, curriculum development and language programs, cloze tests, CRTs and NRTs, TESOL, ESL, applied linguistics and language testing, placement, standardized and proficiency tests, connected speech and reduced forms, pragmatics tests and issues, and reliability and validity. In Phase II, JD Brown provides a discussion and his personal reflections on the systematic review.

Is stylistics a hard science? Intersubjective positioning in Language and Literature research article abstracts between 2013 and 2022

The extent of authorial intervention in research writing is partly a personal expression of individuality but largely an attempt to demonstrate disciplinary affiliation and attain disciplinary recognition in the form of publication and citation. To reach this goal, writers draw upon discourse practices and rhetorical patterns that circulate within the discourse community. Using Hyland's model of interaction in academic discourse, the present study explores patterns of personal and interpersonal intrusion (aka stance and engagement) in abstracts of research article by stylisticians. The objective is to examine whether stylisticians' textual and rhetorical choices intersect more with the disciplinary practices of the soft or hard disciplines. To this end, I use the LancsBox corpus analysis tool to compile a corpus of 181 research article abstracts drawn from the Language and Literature journal, which publishes theoretical and empirical research in stylistics, and search for frequencies of stance markers and engagement features in the corpus. Findings from the corpus-assisted analysis are set against frequent patterns of academic interaction in the soft and hard disciplines in order to determine if stylistics can be claimed to be a hard science.

Summer English Camp in China: Importance of Relationships in English Language Learning

With business relations and international travel on the rise between China and English-speaking countries, the need for English teachers in China has also increased. One method of teaching English in China occurs through summer English camps. The research presented here examines the teacher, camp coordinator, student, and parent experience with a three-week summer English camp for kindergarten through grade eight students hosted by an international school in China. The objective of the study is to describe the lived experiences from the perspective of the various partners to examine whether the curriculum adequately meets their needs, whether children are improving their English skills, and whether the teachers are sufficiently prepared for their experiences. Findings suggest that all participants indicate a high level of satisfaction with the summer camp, especially the importance of relationships in English language learning. Some of the expressed concerns lead to recommendations for improvements. In this study, the practice of the summer English camp is linked to the current English as an additional language research, making this research relevant to a broad international audience. Not only are summer English camps in high demand in China, but in other countries around the world as well.

Research Report: Termini Online Hungarian Dictionary and Database (TOHDD): A Dictionary for Hungarian Varieties Spoken in the Carpathian Basin

Abstract The Termini Online Hungarian–Hungarian Dictionary and Database describes the lexicon of the Hungarian language as spoken in the countries neighbouring Hungary. It is considered to be a general dictionary of present-day Hungarian. Each entry contains authentic example sentences to illustrate the use of the headword, making it possible to examine the special use of a word or construction in a grammatical and pragmatic context. The lexicographical database is edited online in eight countries. The editors of the dictionary are members of the Termini Hungarian Language Research Network. Online editing makes it possible for the dictionary to expand – even simultaneously – as a result of activity in eight countries. In the present study, the authors review the novelties and peculiarities of the dictionary in some detail, touching on the following topics: dictionary structure, IT support, database character, multimedia elements, and labelling system.

ANALYZING TRANSLATION STRATEGY OF ONLINE MEDIA’S NEWS CONTENT USING SKOPOS PERSPECTIVE

This research will answer the question and correlate it with the term of translation, especially through Indonesian to English. Using Skopos theory perspective, the researcher is able to analyze several functions and translation strategies that are used in translating the content of the news articles. Vermeer's Skopos theory has three important rules, namely the Skopos rule, the Coherence rule, and the Fidelity rule. Skopos theory will also bridge the choice of Bielsa's and Bassnett's translation strategies that are suitable for use in the English version of the Antaranews article. This research method is of the library research type, starting with the collection of 11 news articles from Antara in Indonesian and English, respectively. The Indonesian articles became the subject of source language research, while the English ones became the subject of target language research. Then each article was examined carefully, sentence by sentence in order to discover which translation strategy Bielsa and Bassnet models were used. To determine the translation strategy, the researcher integrates the Skopos theory which serves as an indicator of determination in the target language. Based on the research, it was found that Antara's news articles have implemented five kinds of translation strategies, namely: Changing Title and Lead, Removing Unnecessary Information, Adding Important Background Information, Changing the Order of Paragraphs, and Summarizing Information. The findings in the form of translation strategies that can be determined using Skopos theory in this study are expected to help research related to the world of translation at large.
