Editorial: In Celebration of Brian MacWhinney’s Five-Decade Contributions to Psychology, Computational Linguistics, and Modern Languages

It is with great pleasure that we announce this latest edition of this special issue of LTRQ to celebrate the landmark achievements of Professor Brian MacWhinney. Brian MacWhinney is Teresa Heinz Professor of Psychology, Computational Linguistics, and Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon University. Over a distinguished academic career spanning more than 50 years, Brian has made significant contributions not just to the three areas listed under his professor title, but far beyond.

“She kinda kookie but she is a sweet lady”: A glimpse into how student evaluations on a professor-rating website reveal the students’ concerns about English language education

This study used a corpus-informed approach to identify students’ key concerns regarding their English language education. To address the complexity of key elements in student evaluations, the data collection involved students’ comments from 2012 to 2022, regarding their English language professors across different English-related departments at several institutions on Ratemyprofessors.com. These comments were treated as a corpus which covered more than 1,200 comments with over 7,000 words. The data analyses involved two stages. First, using the KeyBNC software, keyword analysis was performed to identify keywords which suggests the students’ areas of concern regarding their English language education. Second, through the USAS tagging system, Wmatrix was implemented to indicate the areas of concern through semantic domains. The findings in both analyses clearly indicated that the students’ concerns involved a wide range of areas, with an emphasis placed on grading and course evaluation issues. Overall, this study argued that, despite some comments which appeared superficial, it is important for professors to critically and judiciously consider all aspects of the evaluations as they can be valuable for improving teaching practices.

Competencias del profesorado de inglés: una mirada desde la Universidad Nacional,Costa Rica

Mastering English is an essential requirement for the professionals of the 21st century. Therefore, Costa Rican public universities, and specifically, Universidad Nacional (UNA) must ensure an adequate and efficient pedagogical praxis from the English as a Foreign Language professors in terms of a) academic competences, b) language competences, c) competences to address diversity and inclusion, d) pedagogical mediation, e) competences in evaluation, and f) technological competences. This article problematizes, from a personal perspective, the principles previously mentioned in relation to university teaching; thus, it discusses the identified possible pedagogical paths to face the challenges of these contemporary times.

Objectives The purpose of this study is as follows. First, what perceptions do learners have about Korean language (modern novel) classes? Second, what are the responses of learners who have used team building visual thinking in all modern novel classes? Third, what is the effect of modern novel classes using team building visual thinking on learners' interest, confidence, attitude, and anxiety? The purpose of this study was to empirically verify the ef-fect on Korean language classes through the experience of modern novel classes using team building visual sink-ing for students in five classes in the second year of Y High School in Seoul. Methods The class was conducted for second-year students at Y High School in Seoul, data was collected through worksheets and questionnaires to analyze the results. The questionnaires were divided into a pre-test and a post-test after review by experts (one Korean language professor and two doctors of education), and a survey was conducted to examine the students' reactions to modern novel classes using team building visual thinking. The survey results were analyzed with descriptive statistics using SPSS 28.0, and open-ended questions and worksheets were analyzed. Results Team building visual thinking classes provided an opportunity for learners, who deeply understood the work, to express their thoughts and impressions visually and then communicate and share their opinions with oth-er learners. This enhanced learners' understanding of the novel while improving their creative thinking, expression skills, and teamwork skills. In addition, team building visual thinking was effective in increasing their learning mo-tivation, thereby making the classes more active. Conclusions Team building visual thinking classes helped build a collaborative learning environment through ac-tivities that team members do together, from idea visualization to idea sharing and feedback. This served as an opportunity to lay the foundation for teaching and learning that can actively respond to changes in education: digi-tal transformation. In particular, this study is significant in that it is a new attempt to utilize team building visual thinking in modern novel classes according to the 2022 Revised National Curriculum.

Lost in translation

Abstract In 1959, Toufic Fahd – a professor of Arabic language, literature, and civilization – made a fortuitous discovery. During a visit to the University of Istanbul, while perusing the University’s library, Fahd stumbled upon an Arabic translation of a Greek work, namely the famous dream interpretation book of Artemidorus, known as the Oneirocritica. The original Greek text is fascinating as it stands as the sole surviving classical work on dream interpretation. The discovery of its later Arabic translation, however, is captivating in its own right. The context of this translation alone is of particular interest to any Islamic historian, having been initially commissioned during the height of the ʿAbbāsid Translation Movement and undertaken by the renowned translator, Ḥunayn Ibn ʾIsḥāq. The intention of the present paper is to compare these texts, highlighting intentional changes made to the content of the Greek work, specifically in instances related to mythology, sexuality, and cultural practices. These changes are noteworthy as they have rendered the Arabic translation as more of a work of interpretation itself, modifying the 2nd century AD Greek text to reflect the realities of its new religious and geographic setting in 9th century Baghdad.

챗GPT를 활용한 시쓰기 방안 연구

Objectives The purpose of this study is as follows. First, this study examines how learners perceive Korean language (poetry writing) classes at school. Second, it examines the effects of poetry writing classes using ChatGPT on learners through a post-hoc test Third, it examines the responses to open-ended questionnaires to see the reactions of the learners who have used ChatGPT throughout poetry writing. Through the experience of the first year of middle school using ChatGPT in the actual poetry writing process, we seek awareness as a ChatGPT user and educational approaches.
 Methods To this end, a test was conducted on 165 middle school students in Incheon to measure the effect of poetry writing classes using ChatGPT on learners. It aimed to collect data through worksheets and questionnaires and analyze the results. The questionnaires were reviewed by experts (one Korean language professor and two doctors of education) through a post-hoc test, and a survey was conducted to investigate students' reactions to poetry writing classes using ChatGPT. With regard to survey analysis methods, the multiple-choice questions answered by students after using ChatGPT were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the open-ended questions were analyzed and organized by item.
 Results When the results of a survey of the students after poetry writing classes using ChatGPT were combined, the class using ChatGPT was found to have higher learner satisfaction than the existing poetry writing class. This study is significant in that it is a new attempt to use ChatGPT in poetry writing classes. In addition, it could find that students are the subjects who construct meaning in the poetry writing class using ChatGPT, and ChatGPT serves as a tool not a substitute for human creative production.
 Conclusions This study confirmed the positive effects of using ChatGPT in poetry writing classes as an alternative to remedy the problems of poetry writing classes.

Enhancing Teaching through ICT Integration: Insights from Moroccan University English Language Professors

This article explores the positive impact of integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching, leading to improved teacher performance and increased student engagement. The study focuses on suggestions provided by instructors to enhance the use of technology in education. Data is collected through a questionnaire administered to Moroccan university English language teachers from Moulay Ismail University Faculty of Arts and Humanities - Meknes, and Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah Dhar - El Mahraz - Fes, serving as a case study. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 19 is employed for data analysis. The findings emphasize the importance of quality training, accessible ICT resources, and effective school policies as key factors in successfully integrating technology into education.

The article presents a review of the monograph by Susan Fusso, an American researcher, and professor of Russian, East European, and Eurasian languages at Wesleyan University, published by Bibliorossika Publishing House and devoted to the role of an authoritative journalist, editor, and publisher of the largest organs of the Russian conservative press M. N. Katkov — in the formation of the concept of the Russian novel of the second half of the 19th century. The author’s attention focuses on Katkov’s relationship with the major Russian writers of the second half of the 19th century, I. S. Turgenev, F. M. Dostoevsky, and L. N. Tolstoy. Based on a broad historical and literary context, a scrupulous analysis of the journalistic speeches of the journalist and the literary texts of Turgenev, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy, the researcher rethinks the importance of Katkov in the literary process of the 1860s and 1880s. The review describes the structure of the monograph, and the range of issues raised in it, highlights the most successful and original author’s conclusions, and outlines the prospects for further research.

Reading Comprehension Problems among First and Second Year EFL Students at Shaikh Zayed University in Afghanistan

It is obviously clear that strong reading comprehension has a significant influence on students’ success at university. This study aims to investigate reading comprehension problems among first and second year EFL students at Shaikh Zayed University in Afghanistan. Fifty EFL first and second year students from the Department of English participated in the survey. The study used a random sampling design of a quantitative approach. The data were gathered through a five-point Likert scale style questionnaire adopted from Abu Abeeleh, Al-Ghazo, and Al-Sobh (2021). The data were analyzed through SPSS V.23 software to calculate the descriptive statistics, frequency, percentage and mean score. The results indicated that great majority of respondents agreed on the reading comprehension problems. Students had problems in understanding the meaning of new words, feeling anxious and upset were also their problems when they read something in English and cannot understand it. Identifying the aim, no confident, extraction of main and detailed ideas from the text also hindered reading comprehension. Understanding the text's overall meaning and translating every word individually, summarizing the main ideas, distinguishing between the main idea and supporting ideas and stressed were their major reading comprehension problems as well. The findings of the study are essential for English language professors in Afghan EFL classrooms in responding to the problem above. This study proposes that students should be taught reading comprehension strategies such as skimming, scanning, making inferences, looking for main idea, making predictions, improving vocabulary, etc.

Расширение диапазона использования условного наклонения в современном испанском языке на примере бизнес-ситуаций

<p>This paper aims to comprehensively analyze the range of use for the conditional tense in the modern Spanish language in the context of the business environment. In the last few decades, its use spectrum has widened significantly, which is visible in expanding into the Present, Past and Future areas. This process is also apparent in different language registers: in colloquial speech and journalism and in the business sector. Based on theory and practical experience, the author analyses the conditional tense as a simple tense with great potential as a form of communication in business and mass media. We found that in some cases, the conditional tense could be substituted by other present or subjunctive tenses. That change shows us the tendency to prioritize simple tenses shaped by globalization and migratory pressures. This perspective may be interesting and valuable for language professors, businesspeople, and Spanish students in the light of the negotiation planning as well as interview and exam preparation, as the research can inspire them to use these speech models in their daily lives and business environment, bringing them closer to spontaneous fluent speaking.</p>

Higher education English language professors' conceptualisation of peace: A call for integrating critical peace practices into teaching and teacher education programmes

This study explored English language professors' conceptualisation of peace in light of explicit theories of peace. The participants, 20 English language professors in the context of Iran, shared their ideas through interviews and personal documents. The data were hermeneutically analysed and two dominant themes were identified: the cultivation of critical being and transforming unequal power through de-centering dominant discourses, listening to muted voices, and expanding participatory processes. The participants called for critical pedagogy and a shift towards a multilingual-multicultural paradigm revolving around intercultural openness. The findings re-claimed criticality in peace practices in teaching and teacher education programmes.

Theoretical Framework: This study is anchored to Corder’s (1974) model of error analysis in order to identify errors of the learners in their composition writing. The errors were discussed in five stages: collection of data containing errors, classification of errors, identification of errors, disclosure and evaluation of errors. Design/Methodology/Approach: The descriptive approach was used using qualitative and quantitative data since the study analyzed the errors committed by the students in composition writing. Moreover, descriptive design was used since the profile of the respondents in terms of sex was described. Lastly, error analysis was used in identifying the errors committed by the students in the writing of their autobiography. Findings: The study found that the Second Language Learners have committed numerous errors under mechanical, grammatical and structural categories such as: misspelling, lack of punctuation marks, errors in capitalization, wrong tense of verb, wrong subject and verb agreement, missing prepositions, fragments, faulty parallelism and comma splice. Research, Practical & Social Implications: This study has implications to language teaching and learning. Language professors should always incorporate lessons in grammar in all language courses. Further, the language learners should be more exposed to multiple writing tasks to enhance their writing skills. Originality/ Value: Development of an evidence-based English remedial program to improve the English proficiency and academic writing skills of second language learners in higher institutions.

He holds a BA (First Class), MA, and PhD from the University of Oxford. His interests include Russian and world history and culture, military history, and the political science of the body. Tempest is the author of “Overwriting Chaos: Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s Fictive Worlds” (Boston: Academic Studies Press, 2019). Translation and Validation of Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire in Urdu Language for Developmental Coordination Disorder Population

Aim: To translate developmental coordination disorder questionnaire in Urdu language and validate its psychometric properties for cross cultural adaptation. Methods: This validation study was done at the Lahore College of Physical Therapy. The Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCDQ) was translated into Urdu utilizing Bombardier, Beaton, and Guillemin's cross-cultural adaption principles. The forward and backward translations were completed by two separate translators, one of whom is a medical professional professor and the other an Urdu language professor. The final certified version of DCDQ-Urdu was confirmed by bilingual professionals. The validated version's reliability was then evaluated on 28 children with developmental coordination disorder. Results: After population testing, the Cranach's alpha of the DCDQ-Urdu version was 0.873. The inter item correlation of the DCDQ-Urdu for three domains, control during movement, fine motor/handwriting, and general coordination, with total DCDQ score is 0.386, 0.312, and 0.3002, respectively, and after population testing is 0.273, 0.303, and 0.397. The original English and translated DCDQ-Urdu versions had a significant association (Spearman's rho 0.951 p 0.000).Test retest reliability ranged from 0.504 to 0.721. Conclusion: The Urdu version of the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire has good internal consistency and fair inter-item correlation, making it suitable for use as a screening tool for parents of children with and without impaired motor coordination. THE CURRENT STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION IN THE MALAYSIAN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

Effective communication is a fundamental factor for high productivity and successful delivery of construction projects. However, the disjointed nature of construction activities, the emergence of more advanced communication technology, and the involvement of workers from various disciplines and background makes effective communication a hassle in the construction industry. Despite the enormous studies on enhancing communication in the construction context, the issue of ineffective communication persists, thereby contributing to site accidents and project delays. cost overrun, disputes, and low labour productivity. Therefore, this study investigates the current strategies for effective communication in the construction industry, particularly in emerging countries like Malaysia. Twenty professionals including construction managers, site supervisors, construction labourers, and language professors were interviewed. The interviewees were selected via the convenient sampling technique and the In-depth interview data was analysed using thematic content analysis. The findings reveal that the root causes of ineffective communication in the construction industry are low literacy level of construction workers, poor management and supervision, lack of technical knowledge, the complexity of the construction industry, and the language barrier. Additionally, the strategies for effective communication in the Malaysian construction industry were established and categorized into 3: Technological Based Strategies, Integrated Process Strategies, and Human Engagement Strategies. The research output provides construction experts with a novel approach that can guide the construction workforce to effectively communicate using various communication mediums, thereby increasing productivity and profits.

Effects of Using Authentic Materials on Motivating EFL (English as a Foreign Language) Learners

This research demonstrates how the usage of authentic materials motivate EFL learners. Furthermore, it covers a literature review on the effect of authentic materials in motivating EFL learners, which will help out English as foreign language professors in designing and teaching their students. In short, the stated chunk of this paper emphasizes on how to use authentic materials in the teaching process to motivate learners.

Translation in Digital Times: Omid Tofighian on Translating the Manus Prison Narratives

On 12 February 2020, while on an international tour promoting Behrouz Boochani’s No Friend but the Mountains: Writing from Manus Prison, the translator of the book, Omid Tofighian, participated in a seminar at Utrecht University, organised by Australian academic, Anna Poletti (associate professor of English language and culture, Utrecht University). Poletti is also co-editor of the journal Biography: an interdisciplinary quarterly, which published a special issue on No Friend but the Mountains in 2020 (Vol. 43, No. 4). The seminar involved Poletti, Tofighian and translation scholar, Onno Kosters (assistant professor of English literature and translation studies, Utrecht University) in conversation. Iranian–Dutch filmmaker, Arash Kamali Sarvestani, co-director with Boochani of the film Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time (2017), was in attendance, as well as the Dutch publisher, Jurgen Maas (Uitgeverij Jurgen Maas, Dutch translation based on the English translation). The event was titled ‘No Friend but the Mountains: Translation in Digital Times’. The following dialogue, ‘Translation in Digital Times: Omid Tofighian on Translating the Manus Prison Narratives’, is derived from this seminar and focuses on Tofighian’s translation of the book from Persian/Farsi into English. The topics covered also include the Dutch translation from Tofighian’s English translation, genre and anti-genre, horrific surrealism, Kurdish elements and influences, the Kurdish translation (from Tofighian’s English translation), publication of the Persian/Farsi original, translation as activism, process and technology.
