Microbial community dynamics in different floc size aggregates during nitrogen removal process upgrading in a full-scale landfill leachate treatment plant

Upgrading processes to reduce biodegradable organic substance addition is crucial for treating landfill leachate with high pollutant concentrations, aiding carbon emission reduction. Aggregate size in activated sludge processes impacts pollutant removal and sludge/water separation. This study investigated microbial community succession and driving mechanisms in different floc-size aggregates during a nitrogen removal upgrade from conventional to partial nitrification–denitrification in a full-scale landfill leachate treatment plant (LLTP) using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The upgrade and floc sizes significantly influenced microbial diversity and composition. After upgrading, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria were enriched while nitrite-oxidizing bacteria suppressed in small flocs with homogeneity and high mass transfer efficiency. Larger flocs enriched Defluviicoccus, Thauera, and Truepera, while smaller flocs enriched Nitrosomonas, suggesting their potential as biomarkers. Multi-network analyses revealed microbial interactions. A deep learning model with convolutional neural networks predicted nitrogen removal efficiency. These findings guide optimizing LLTP processes and understanding microbial community dynamics based on floc size.

Multi-omics illuminates the functional significance of previously unknown species in a full-scale landfill leachate treatment plant

Landfill leachate treatment plants (LLTPs) harbor a vast reservoir of uncultured microbes, yet limited studies have systematically unraveled their functional potentials within LLTPs. Combining 36 metagenomic and 18 metatranscriptomic datasets from a full-scale LLTP, we unveiled a double-edged sword role of unknown species in leachate biotreatment and environmental implication. We identified 655 species-level genome bins (SGBs) spanning 47 bacterial and 3 archaeal phyla, with 75.9 % unassigned to any known species. Over 90 % of up-regulated functional genes in biotreatment units, compared to the leachate influent, were carried by unknown species and actively participated in carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles. Approximately 79 % of the 37,366 carbohydrate active enzymes (CAZymes), with ∼90 % novelty and high expression, were encoded by unknown species, exhibiting great potential in biodegrading carbohydrate compounds linked to human meat-rich diets. Unknown species offered a valuable genetic resource of thousands of versatile, abundant, and actively expressed metabolic gene clusters (MGCs) and biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) for enhancing leachate treatment. However, unknown species may contribute to the emission of hazardous N2O/H2S and represented significant reservoirs for antibiotic-resistant pathogens that posed environmental safety risks. This study highlighted the significance of considering both positive and adverse effects of LLTP microbes to optimize LLTP performance.

A mixed blessing of influent leachate microbes in downstream biotreatment systems of a full-scale landfill leachate treatment plant

In landfill leachate treatment plants (LLTPs), the microbiome plays a pivotal role in the decomposition of organic compounds, reduction in nutrient levels, and elimination of toxins. However, the effects of microbes in landfill leachate influents on downstream treatment systems remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we collected 23 metagenomic and 12 metatranscriptomic samples from landfill leachate and activated sludge from various treatment units in a full-scale LLTP. We successfully recovered 1,152 non-redundant metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), encompassing a wide taxonomic range, including 48 phyla, 95 classes, 166 orders, 247 families, 238 genera, and 1,152 species. More diverse microbes were observed in the influent leachate than in the downstream biotreatment systems, among which, an unprecedented ∼30 % of microbes with transcriptional expression migrated from the influent to the biological treatment units. Network analysis revealed that 399 shared MAGs across the four units exhibited high node centrality and degree, thus supporting enhanced interactions and increased stability of microbial communities. Functional reconstruction and genome characterization of MAGs indicated that these shared MAGs possessed greater capabilities for carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and arsenic metabolism compared to non-shared MAGs. We further identified a novel species of Zixibacteria in the leachate influent with discrete lineages from those in other environments that accounted for up to 17 % of the abundance of the shared microbial community and exhibited notable metabolic versatility. Meanwhile, we presented groundbreaking evidence of the involvement of Zixibacteria-encoded genes in the production of harmful gas emissions, such as N2O and H2S, at the transcriptional level, thus suggesting that influent microbes may pose safety risks to downstream treatment systems. In summary, this study revealed the complex impact of the influent microbiome on LLTP and emphasizes the need to consider these microbial characteristics when designing treatment technologies and strategies for landfill leachate management.

Assessment of Denitrification and Nitrification Processes during Landfill Leachate Treatment

Landfill leachate is generated from waste degradation in landfill sites, and its treatment includes biological or combined treatment with physico-chemical methods. A frequently applied technology in the biological stage of landfill leachate treatment plants is based on denitrification and nitrification. Nevertheless, with the availability of a huge number of scientific reports, the management of denitrification and nitrification (D/N) processes in the frame of real wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is rather difficult and always remains a critical technological problem. This study aims to perform a comparative assessment between denitrification and nitrification processes during landfill leachate treatment in three different situations in the WWTP of the Municipal Enterprise for Waste Treatment in Sofia City, Bulgaria. The comparative assessment is based on the biotransformation effectiveness of ammonium ions in the course of nitrification and of nitrates in the course of denitrification. Mixed samples (wastewater and activated sludge) were taken from the sequencing batch reactors operating in the mode of denitrification and nitrification. All physico-chemical (pH, dissolved oxygen, organics concentration, BOD5:COD, nitrogen and phosphorous) and biological (sludge volume index, sludge biotic index, quantity of aerobic heterotrophs, denitrifiers and nitrifiers, total dehydrogenase activity) indicators were investigated in the samples from the biobasins in the mode of denitrification and nitrification. The conditions for the implementation of the two processes were compared, along with the state of the activated sludge in the different reactors. The obtained results showed that denitrification was the critical process in the technology on the base of D/N. A major factor that managed the denitrification was the lower concentration of biodegradable organic matter which led to a deformation of the activated sludge structure, a decrease in the count of heterotrophic microorganisms, a decrease in the total activity of the activated sludge and an inhibition of the nitrate reductase activity. The nitrification processes were accomplished with high intensity. The results confirmed that D/N could be optimized and controlled using specific wastewater treatment technology parameters and purposely applied indicators.

Metagenomic analysis unveils the underexplored roles of prokaryotic viruses in a full-scale landfill leachate treatment plant

Enormous viral populations have been identified in activated sludge systems, but their ecological and biochemical roles in landfill leachate treatment plants remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted an in-depth analysis using 36 metagenomic datasets that we collected and sequenced during a half-year time-series sampling campaign at six sites in a full-scale landfill leachate treatment plant (LLTP), elucidating viral distribution, virus‒host dynamics, virus-encoded auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs), and viral contributions to the spread of virulence and antibiotic resistance genes. Our findings demonstrated that viral and prokaryotic communities differed widely among different treatment units, with stability over time. LLTP viruses were linked to various prokaryotic hosts, spanning 35 bacterial phyla and one archaeal phylum, which included the core microbes involved in biological treatments, as well as some of the less well-characterized microbial dark matter phyla. By encoding 2364 auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs), viruses harbored the potential to regulate microbial nucleotide metabolism, facilitate the biodegradation of complex organic matter, and enhance flocculation and settling in biological treatment plants. The abundance distribution of AMGs varied considerably across treatment units and showed a lifestyle-dependent pattern with temperate virus-associated AMGs exhibiting a higher average abundance in downstream biological treatment units and effluent water. Meanwhile, temperate viruses tended to carry a higher load of virulence factor genes (VFGs), antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and biotic and metal resistance genes (BMRGs), and engaged in more frequent gene exchanges with prokaryotes than lytic viruses, thus acting as a pivotal contributor to the dissemination of pathogenicity and resistance genes in downstream LLTP units. This study provided a comprehensive profile of viral and prokaryotic communities in the LLTP and unveiled the varying roles of different-lifestyle viruses in biochemical processes and water quality safety.

Effect of the association of coagulation/flocculation, hydrodynamic cavitation, ozonation and activated carbon in landfill leachate treatment system

Mature landfill wastewater is a complex effluent due to its low biodegradability and high organic matter content. Currently, mature leachate is treated on-site or transported to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Many WWTPs do not have the capacity to receive mature leachate due to its high organic load leading to an increase in the cost of transportation to treatment plants more adapted to this type of wastewater and the possibility of environmental impacts. Many techniques are used in the treatment of mature leachates, such as coagulation/flocculation, biological reactors, membranes, and advanced oxidative processes. However, the isolated application of these techniques does not achieve efficiency to meet environmental standards. In this regard, this work developed a compact system that combines coagulation and flocculation (1st Stage), hydrodynamic cavitation and ozonation (2nd Stage), and activated carbon polishing (3rd Stage) for the treatment of mature landfill leachate. The synergetic combination of physicochemical and advanced oxidative processes showed a chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency of over 90% in less than three hours of treatment using the bioflocculant PGα21Ca. Also, the almost absolute removal of apparent color and turbidity was achieved. The remaining CODs of the treated mature leachate were lower when compared to typical domestic sewage of large capitals (COD ~ 600 mg L−1), which allows the interconnection of the sanitary landfill to the urban sewage collection network after treatment in this proposed system. The results obtained with the compact system can help in the design of landfill leachate treatment plants, as well as in the treatment of urban and industrial effluents which contains different compounds of emerging concern and persistence in the environment.

Mitigation of N2O emissions via enhanced denitrification in a biological landfill leachate treatment using external carbon from fermented sludge

The effects of an external carbon source (C-source) on the mitigation of N2O gas (N2O(g)) emissions from landfill leachate were investigated via enhanced denitrification using anaerobically fermented sewage sludge. Anaerobic fermentation of sewage sludge was conducted under thermophilic conditions with progressively increasing organic loading rates (OLR). Optimal conditions for fermentation were determined based on the efficiency of hydrolysis and the concentrations of sCOD and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) as follows: at an OLR of 40.48 ± 0.77 g COD/L·d with 1.5 days of solid retention time (SRT), 14.68 ± 0.59% of efficiency of hydrolysis, 14.42 ± 0.30 g sCOD/L and 7.85 ± 0.18 g COD/L of VFAs. Analysis of the microbial community in the anaerobic fermentation reactor revealed that degradation of sewage sludge might be potentially affected by proteolytic microorganisms producing VFAs from proteinaceous materials. Sludge-fermentate (SF) retrieved from the anaerobic fermentation reactor was used as the external C-source for denitrification testing. The specific nitrate removal rate (KNR) of the SF-added condition was 7.54 mg NO3−N/g VSS·hr, which was 5.42 and 2.43 times higher than that of raw landfill leachate (LL) and a methanol-added condition, respectively. In the N2O(g) emission test, the liquid phase N2O (N2O–N(l)) of 20.15 mg N/L was emitted as N2O(g) of 19.64 ppmv under only LL-added condition. On the other hand, SF led to the specific N2O(l) reduction rate (KN2O) of 6.70 mg N/g VSS hr, resulting in mitigation of 1.72 times the N2O(g) emission compared to under the only-LL-added condition. The present study revealed that N2O(g) emissions from biological landfill leachate treatment plants can be attenuated by simultaneous reduction of NO3−N and N2O(l) during enhanced denitrification via a stable supply of an external C-source retrieved from anaerobically fermented organic waste.

Retrofitting a full-scale multistage landfill leachate treatment plant by introducing coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation and ultrafiltration process steps.

Considering that landfilling still remains among the most commonly used methods for the confrontation of solid wastes, effective methods should be applied to treat the leachate generated, due to its recalcitrant nature. In this work, a full-scale system consisting of two SBRs operating in parallel (350 m3 each) and two activated carbon (AC) columns operating in series (3 m3 each) was retrofitted by introducing a coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation (C/F/S) unit of 7.8 m3 and an ultrafiltration (UF) membrane of 100 m2 to effectively treat landfill leachate. The raw leachate was characterized by high COD and NH4+-N concentration, i.e., 3095 ± 706mg/L and 1054 ± 141mg/L respectively, a BOD/COD ratio of 0.22, and high concentrations of certain heavy metals. Leachate processing in this retrofitted multistage treatment system resulted in total COD removal efficiency of 89.84%, with biological treatment, C/F, UF, and AC contributing 46.31%, 4.68%, 15.98%, and 22.87% to the overall organic content removal. The retrofitted scheme achieved an overall NH4+-N and TKN removal of 92.03% and 91.75% respectively, attributed mostly to the activity of an effective nitrifying community. Color number (CN) was reduced by 26.96%, 10.29%, 15.94%, and 5.39% after the activated sludge, the C/F, the UF, and the AC adsorption process respectively, corresponding to a 58.91% overall decrease. Regarding heavy metal removal, all elements examined, apart from Ni, i.e., effluent As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mg, Mn, and Pb, were below the legislative limits set by the national authorities for restricted or unrestricted irrigation. Lastly, total operating expenses (OPEX) were estimated as equal to 72,687 €/year or 6.64 €/m3.

Discovering dominant ammonia assimilation: Implication for high-strength nitrogen removal in full scale biological treatment of landfill leachate

Landfill leachate containing high-strength nitrogen is generated in domestic waste landfilling. The integration of anoxic and aerobic process (AO) based on nitrification and denitrification, has been a mainstream process of biological nitrogen removal (BNR). But the high-strength organics as well as aerobic effluent reflux might change the biochemical environment designed and operated as AO. In view of the nitrogen balance in a full scale landfill leachate treatment plant with two-stage AO, we found that approximately 90% removal of total nitrogen (TN) and ammonia (NH4+-N) focused on primary anoxic and aerobic stage. Meanwhile, the less nitrate and nitrite in the aerobic effluent were incapable of sustaining denitrification or anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox). The high reflux flow from aerobic to anoxic process enabled the similar microbial community and functional genes in anoxic and aerobic process units. However, the functional genes involving ammonia assimilation in all process units showcased the highest abundance compared to those correlated with other BNR pathways, including nitrification and denitrification, assimilatory and dissimilatory nitrate reduction, nitrogen fixation and anammox. The ammonia assimilation dominated the removals of TN and NH4+-N, rather than other BNR mechanism. The insight of dominant ammonia assimilation is favorable for illustrating the authentic BNR mechanism of landfill leachate in AO, thereby guiding the optimization of engineering design and operation.

Assessing the Fate of Dissolved Organic Compounds in Landfill Leachate and Wastewater Treatment Systems.

Landfill leachate and municipal wastewater are major sources of chemical pollutants that contaminate our drinking water sources. Evaluating the dissolved organic chemical composition in wastewater treatment plants is therefore essential to understand how the discharge impacts the environment, wildlife, and human health. In this study, we utilized a nontargeted analysis method coupling liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to analyze chemical features at different points along two landfill leachate treatment plants (LLTPs) and two municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the Southeastern United States. Significant feature differences were observed for the WWTPs where activated sludge clarification was employed versus the LLTPs utilizing reverse osmosis. Specifically, even though both LLTPs had the largest number of features in their influent water, their effluent following reverse osmosis yielded a lower number of features than the WWTPs. Additionally, the clarification processes of each WWTP exhibited different efficiencies as chemical disinfection removed more features than UV disinfection. Feature identification was then made using the LC, MS, and MS/MS information. Analysis of the identified molecules showed that lipids were the most effectively removed from all plants, while alkaloid and organic nitrogen compounds were the most recalcitrant.

Characterization and Removal of Microplastics in Landfill Leachate Treatment Plants in Istanbul, Turkey

This study was carried out to determine the abundance, size, and type of microplastics (MPs) in landfill leachate of Kömürcüoda and Odayeri sanitary landfills in Istanbul. Within this framework, membrane bioreactor (MBR)-ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) samples were collected to determine the concentration of microplastics in both landfill leachate treatment plants (LLTPs). The highest suspected microplastic concentrations were determined to be 196, 147, and 183 particles/L in the mixed liquor sludge from a membrane bioreactor (MBR) in Kömürcüoda LLTP and aerobic and anoxic basins in Odayeri LLTPs. The main particle color detected in Kömürcüoda LLTP was transparent, followed by black, whereas transparent and blue were dominant in the Odayeri LLTP. In the effluents of UF and NF units of Kömürcüoda LLTP, the microplastic concentrations were 7.24 particle/L and 2 particle/L. The results show that UF and NF efficiently removed microplastics at 99%. In the effluent of the UF unit in Odayeri LLTP, approximately 96% microplastic removal was achieved. According to these results, the most common microplastic type in all units was fiber and the principal sizes were between 500 and 999 and 1000 and 1999 µm at all sampling points.

(Anti)estrogenic activity impacted by complex environmental matrices: A DOM and multiphase distribution approach

The presence of estrogenic endocrine disruptors in aquatic environments has been a concern and bioassays are recommended tools for their monitoring. However, the physicochemical properties of contaminants and the environmental matrix features may influence the resultant response. This study aimed to assess this influence on the Yeast Estrogen Screen (YES) assay. Mixtures of 17β-estradiol (E2) and humic acid (HA) were evaluated through the Schild approach aiming to investigate the interactions between estrogens and dissolved organic matter (DOM). Moreover, environmental samples from municipal landfill leachate and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) influents and effluents were screened for (anti)estrogenic activity at both dissolved and particulate phases. Finally, results were statistically confronted with physicochemical parameters through principal component analysis (PCA). The HA test concentrations strongly reduced the E2 response, even at low levels. Humic substances may not only reduce estrogen bioavailability, but also interfere with the assay mechanism through enzymatic inhibition thus masking the sample estrogenic potential. Landfill leachate had total E2-Eq in the range 1282–2591 ng L−1, while WWTP influent and effluent were in the range 12.1–41.4 and <DL–2.3 ng L−1, so estrogenicity was reduced 92% in average. Particulate phase was responsible for 33–100% of measured E2-Eq between matrices, though cytotoxicity occurred in some extracts. Antiestrogenic activity was observed in both phases and might also have masked the estrogenicity of samples. PCA did not resulted in positive correlations supporting a multiphase distribution pattern of estrogenic compounds. Nevertheless, the solids and organic matter characteristics supported the data interpretation. In conclusion, the in vitro YES assay is subjected to factors intrinsic to the environmental sample that can influence on the measured estrogenic response. Therefore, results interpretation should be performed together with organic matter characterization parameters, cytotoxicity and antiestrogenic activity evaluation.

A review on membrane concentrate management from landfill leachate treatment plants: The relevance of resource recovery to close the leachate treatment loop.

Membrane filtration processes have been used to treat landfill leachate. On the other hand, closing the leachate treatment loop and finding a final destination for landfill leachate membrane concentrate (LLMC) - residual stream of membrane systems - is challenging for landfill operators. The re-introduction of LLMC into the landfill is typical; however, this approach is critical as concentrate pollutants may accumulate in the leachate treatment facility. From that, leachate concentrate management based on resource recovery rather than conventional treatment and disposal is recommended. This work comprehensively reviews the state-of-the-art of current research on LLMC management from leachate treatment plants towards a resource recovery approach. A general recovery train based on the main LLMC characteristics for implementing the best recovery scheme is presented in this context. LLMCs could be handled by producing clean water and add-value materials. This paper offers critical insights into LLMC management and highlights future research trends.

Co-Treatment of Landfill Leachate and Liquid Fractions of Anaerobic Digestate in an Industrial-Scale Membrane Bioreactor System

The management of the liquid fraction of digestate produced from the anaerobic digestion of biodegradable municipal solid waste is a difficult affair, as its land application is limited due to high ammonium concentrations and the municipal waste that water treatment plants struggle to treat due to high pollutant loads. The amount of leachate and the pollutant load in the leachate produced by landfills usually decreases with the time, which increases the capacity of landfill leachate treatment plants (LLTPs) to treat additional wastewater. In order to solve the above two challenges, the co-treatment of landfill leachate and the liquid fraction of anaerobic digestate in an industrial-scale LLTP was investigated along with the long-term impacts of the liquid fraction of anaerobic digestate on biocoenosis and its impact on LLTP operational expenses. The co-treatment of landfill leachate and liquid fraction of anaerobic digestate was compared to conventional leachate treatment in an industrial-scale LLTP, which included the use of two parallel lanes (Lane-1 and Lane-2). The average nitrogen removal efficiencies in Lane-1 (co-treatment) were 93.4%, 95%, and 92%, respectively, for C/N ratios of 8.7, 8.9, and 9.4. The average nitrogen removal efficiency in Lane-2 (conventional landfill leachate treatment), meanwhile, was 88%, with a C/N ratio of 6.5. The LLTP’s average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies were 63.5%, 81%, and 78% during phases one, two, and three, respectively. As the volume ratios of the liquid fraction of anaerobic digestate increased, selective oxygen uptake rate experiments demonstrated the dominance of heterotrophic bacteria over ammonium and nitrite-oxidising organisms. The inclusion of the liquid fraction of anaerobic digestate during co-treatment did not cause a significant increase in operational resources, i.e., oxygen, the external carbon source, activated carbon, and energy.

Kinetic of nitrogen consumption by Anammox process in membrane biofilm reactors operated in sequential batch

Biological nitrogen removal via Anammox is an advantageous technology in the nitrogen treatment effluents with a low Carbon/Nitrogen ratio, a process that makes this route interesting for the most different types of industries, agribusinesses, and urban effluent treatment plants. Achieving robust Anammox biomass for use in full-scale plants is still a challenge that motivates studies of biomass enrichment and the search for kinetic parameters of substrate consumption rate that help optimize the conduction of reactors. According to the previously mentioned, this work aimed to carry out the kinetic study of nitrogen consumption by the Anammox process in a membrane aerated biofilm reactors operated in sequential batches (MABR-BS). 6 MABR-BS reactors were used, each one of them inoculated with a specific Anammox sludge, obtained from the enrichment of anaerobic and aerobic sludges coming from 3 different sludge sources, namely, a municipal wastewater treatment plant, a landfill leachate treatment plant, and a swine slaughterhouse effluent treatment plant. For the kinetic study, 6 reactors were used, made in glass flasks with a total volume of 1L, with a useful volume of 500 mL, with the 300:200mL ratio between synthetic effluent (with 100mgN-NH4+.L-1) and sludge from the sources: R1 - anaerobic sludge from a UASB reactor for urban sewage treatment; R2 - mixed sludge from a UASB reactor, consisting of waste sludge and supernatant scum; R3 - anaerobic sludge from landfill leachate treatment; R4 - mixed sludge consisting of aerobic and anaerobic sludge from landfill leachate treatment plant; R5 - anaerobic sludge from the swine slaughter effluent treatment plant and R6 - aerobic and anaerobic sludge from the swine slaughter effluent treatment plant. The experimental apparatus had 3 aerators coupled to 3 flowmeters with an air flow regulated at 1.0 L.min-1; 30 cm of silicone membrane in a curved shape with one of the inlets connected to the aerator and flowmeter, the other outlet was immersed in a 75 cm water column, exerting negative pressure on the air inside the tubular silicone membrane, forcing the air to exit through the microporosity of the membrane. Aeration was intermittent, with an interval of 0.16 h between each minute of aeration, the reactors were shaken in a water bath at 30 rpm and temperature of 32°C. The kinetic test had a duration of 24 hours with sampling every 2.5 hours. The nitrogen removal efficiencies (%) determined in the kinetic test were 61.36 (R1); 61.01(R2); 59.03 (R3); 56.70 (R4); 62.77 (R5) and 64.40 (R6). Regarding pH, all reactors had an initial pH above 8.0 and a final pH close to neutral. The specific nitrogen removal rates (in mgN.gVSS-1h-1), were on average 29.43 (R1); 33.50 (R2); 33.62 (R3); 33.42 (R4); 28.90 (R5) and 30.34 (R6). The best performance in the kinetic assay was obtained in the R1 reactor, obtaining a specific activity of maximum nitrogen removal of 57.61 mgN.gVSS-1h-1 and molar generation of residual nitrate with a stoichiometric coefficient of 0.018 mol.

A Review on the Effects of Flame Retardant Additives Towards the Environment and Human Health

Flame retardant additives (FRAs) are normally the addition of chemicals that function to prevent or slow the spread of fires. These chemicals are used in consumer products and industries and could retain in the environment even after several decades. The toxicity mechanism and risk assessment methods of FRAs are also discussed in this paper. Papers from Scopus, Elsevier, Environmental health perspectives (EHP), Research gate, Semantic scholar, Hindawi, and Pubmed from 2003 to recent years were reviewed to provide some views on the possible risks of FRAs and their pathways into our environment as well as into human body. While FRAs could enter the environment during the manufacturing process and the usage period, consumer items are treated with FRAs, through waste streams, during illegal open burning of solid wastes, from incineration plants from landfill leachate and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) sludge. FRAs are hazardous to humans and the environment; therefore, toxicology assessment should also be consistently conducted on the latest FRAs to ensure that they would not have adverse effects on humans and the environment.

Metagenomic Insights Into Functional and Taxonomic Compositions of an Activated Sludge Microbial Community Treating Leachate of a Completed Landfill: A Pathway-Based Analysis.

Upcycling wastes into valuable products by mixed microbial communities has recently received considerable attention. Sustainable production of high-value substances from one-carbon (C1) compounds, e.g., methanol supplemented as an external electron donor in bioreactors for wastewater treatment, is a promising application of upcycling. This study undertook a gene-centric approach to screen valuable production potentials from mixed culture biomass, removing organic carbon and nitrogen from landfill leachate. To this end, the microbial community of the activated sludge from a landfill leachate treatment plant and its metabolic potential for the production of seven valuable products were investigated. The DNA extracted from the activated sludge was subjected to shotgun metagenome sequencing to analyze the microbial taxonomy and functions associated with producing the seven products. The functional analysis confirmed that the activated sludge could produce six of the valuable products, ectoine, polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, acetoin, and 2,3-butanediol. Quantification of the detected functional gene hit numbers for these valuable products as a primary trial identified a potential rate-limiting metabolic pathway, e.g., conversion of L-2,4-diaminobutyrate into N-γ-acetyl-L2,4,-diaminobutyrate during the ectoine biosynthesis. Overall, this study demonstrated that primary screening by the proposed gene-centric approach can be used to evaluate the potential for the production of valuable products using mixed culture or single microbe in engineered systems. The proposed approach can be expanded to sites where water purification is highly required, but resource recovery, or upcycling has not been implemented.

TEMDnet: A Novel Deep Denoising Network for Transient Electromagnetic Signal With Signal-to-Image Transformation

The considerable prospecting depth and accurate subsurface characteristics can be obtained by the transient electromagnetic method (TEM) in geophysics. Nevertheless, the time-domain TEM signal received by the coil is easily disturbed by environmental background noise, artificial noise, and electronic noise of the equipment. Recently, deep neural networks (DNNs) have been used to solve the TEM denoising problem and have achieved better performance than traditional methods. However, the existing denoising method with DNN adopts fully connected neural networks and is therefore not flexible enough to deal with various signal scales. To address these issues, a novel denoising framework with deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) of transforming the TEM signal denoising task into an image denoising task (namely, TEMDnet) is proposed in this article. Specifically, a novel signal-to-image transformation method is developed first to preserve the structural features of TEM signals. Then, a novel deep CNN-based denoiser is proposed to further perform feature learning, in which the residual learning mechanism is adopted to model the noise estimation image for different signal features. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework can achieve much better performance compared with other state-of-the-art approaches on both simulated signals and real-world signals from a landfill leachate treatment plant in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. Simultaneous occurrence and analysis of both anammox and n-damo bacteria in five full-scale wastewater treatment plants

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) and nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-damo) processes are two newly discovered biochemical pathways for removal of reactive nitrogen species and methane. An investigation was initiated to investigate the simultaneous removal of ammonium and methane and the corresponding microorganisms in a full-scale sewage treatment plant and four landfill leachate treatment plants. In this study, hzsB and pmoA genes were used to amplify the genomic DNA of these samples to reveal the diversity of anammox bacteria and n-damo bacteria in these WWTPs. Both anammox bacteria and n-damo bacteria were detected successfully in all samples. The hzsB gene-based PCR amplified sequences featured three genera of Candidatus (Ca.) Brocadia, Ca. Kuenenia and Ca. Jettenia in these WWTPs, while the pmoA gene amplification showed two species of Ca. Methylomirabilis oxyfera and Ca. Methylomirabilis sinica. It was observed that after inoculation of anammox sludge, Brocadia becomes more dominant from the initial co-existing consortium of Kuenenia and Brocadia, and the community diversity decreased accordingly. Based on quantitative 16S rRNA gene PCR, the abundance of anammox bacteria ranged from 2.64 × 106 to 1.73 × 1013 copies per gram dry sludge in the five plants, particularly high on the carriers of landfill leachate wastewaters and the abundance of n-damo bacteria ranged from 2.52 × 107 to 2.19 × 108 copies per gram dry sludge in the five plants. Results shows that abundances of anammox bacteria and AOB (ammonium oxidizing bacteria) were limited by the lower ammonium in the sewage treatment plant, but were higher corresponding to ammonium concentration. Successful inoculation of anammox bacteria was achieved in practical engineering systems and the co-occurrence of anammox bacteria and n-damo bacteria plays an important role in N and C removal in WWTPs.

Investigation of micropollutants removal from landfill leachate in a full-scale advanced treatment plant in Istanbul city, Turkey

Although the levels of micropollutants in landfill leachate and municipal wastewater are well-established, the individual removal mechanisms and the fate of micropollutants throughout a landfill leachate treatment plant (LTP) were seldom investigated. Therefore, the determination of the removal efficiencies and the fates of micropollutants in a full-scale leachate treatment plant located in the largest city of Turkey were aimed in this study. Some important processes, such as equalization pond, bioreactor, ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF), are being operated in the treatment plant. Landfill leachate was characterized as an intense pollution source of macro and micropollutants compared to other water types. Chemical oxygen demand (COD), NH3, suspended solids (SS) and electrical conductivity (EC) values of the landfill leachate (and their removal efficiencies in the treatment plant) were determined as 18,656 ± 12,098 mg/L (98%), 3090 ± 845 mg/L (99%), 4175 ± 1832 mg/L (95%) and 31 ± 2 mS/cm (51%), respectively. Within the scope of the study, the most frequently and abundantly detected micropollutants in the treatment plant were found as heavy metals (8 ± 1.7 mg/L), VOCs (38 ± 2 μg/L), alkylphenols (9 ± 3 μg/L) and phthalates (8 ± 3 μg/L) and the overall removal efficiencies of these micropollutants ranged from −11% to 100% in the treatment processes. The main removal mechanism of VOCs in the aerobic treatment process has been found as the volatilization due to Henry constants greater than 100 Pa·m3/mol. However, the molecular weight cut off restriction of UF membrane has caused to less or negative removal efficiencies for some VOCs. The biological treatment unit which consists of sequential anoxic and oxic units (A/O) was found effective on the removal of PAHs (62%) and alkylphenols (87%). It was inferred that both NO3 accumulation in anoxic reactor, high hydraulic retention time (HRT) and sludge retention time (SRT) in aerobic reactor provide higher biodegradation and volatilization efficiencies as compared to the literature. Membrane processes were more effective on the removal of alkylphenols (60–80%) and pesticides (59–74%) in terms of influent and effluent loads of each unit. Removal efficiencies for Cu, Ni and Cr, which were the dominant heavy metals, were determined as 92, 91 and 51%, respectively and the main removal mechanism for heavy metals has thought to be coprecipitation of suspended solids by microbial biopolymers in the bioreactor and the separation of colloids during membrane filtration. Total effluent loads of the LTP for VOCs, semi volatiles and heavy metals were 1.0 g/day, 5.2 g/day and 1.5 kg/day, respectively. It has been concluded that the LTP was effectively removing both conventional pollutants and micropollutants with the specific operation costs of 0.27 $/(kg of removed COD), 0.13 $/(g of removed VOCs), 0.35 $/(g of removed SVOCs) and 2.6 $/(kg of removed metals).
