Potentiality and Prospects for Rice Bran and Rice Bran oil in Tamil Nadu

The demand for domestic oil always outstrips the supply and consequently the problem remains to be tackled from different engles. At no time the Pian targets for oilseeds had been achieved; this is mainly because of growing of oll seeds at low levels of manage- ments and primarily in unirrigated areas. The present situation in domestic oil front, the requirements by 1983-84 and the ways and means of finding alternate sources of edible oll without much pressure on cultivated land for Tamil Nadu have been indicated. Of the non- traditional domestic oil resources, the oil present in rice bran can to a large extent be utilised for edible purposes. A potential of 6.4 lakh tonnes of rice bran and 1.1 lakh tonnes of rice bran all in Tamil Nadu by 1983-84 has been identified. The strategy for producing more rice bran oll in Tamil Nadu has also been indicated.

An Appraisal of the Pilot Project Blocks Scheme Implemented in Maharashtra during Rabi Season 1975-76

Wide fluctuations in the production of foodgrain crops in the State of Maharashtra have been causing concern and Government decided to take steps to stabilise the production of foodgrains in the State. Foodgrain production was 77.44 Iakh tonnes during 1960-61 and thereafter upto the year 1972-73 it never crossed the level of 70 lakh tonnes.

A Model for Forecasting Wheat Production in the Punjab

The purpose of the study is to explore the possibility of developing an econometric model which would help in explaining and predicting changes in wheat production in the Punjab. Wheat is a major crop in the province occupy¬ing nearly 40 per cent of the total cultivated area and about 2/3 of the area under Rabi crops. It is by far the most important food crop providing nearly 2/3 of the total calorie intake. Accurate forecasting of wheat production is critical for planning process. Wheat production in the province increased from 27.2 lakh tons in 1949-50 to 56 lakh tons in 1972-73 or 106 per cent. The increase in production was achieved largely by the increase in wheat area which rose from 59.1 lakh acres in 1949-50 to 107.9 lakh acres in 1972-73 or nearly 83 per cent. About 80 per cent of the wheat acreage is irrigated and only 20 per cent is grown in the Barani land. The yield per acre which was 12.38 maunds in 1949-50 declined to only 9.17 maunds in 1959-60 but increased sharply to 14.14 maund in 1972-73.

Trends in Groundnut Production in Tamil Nadu

Groundnut occupies a pre-eminent position in Tamil Nadu which ranks first in yield per acre and second in production and fourth in acreage among the sister States in India, which itself occupies the premier position in world acreage and production. Tamil Nadu accounts for an annual production of 10.56 lakh tons from an area of 22 lakh acres. A large number of projects is ushered in for boosting groundnut production and among them the one on Export Promotion assumes significance. In such schemes, a certain lacuna does prevail for want of sufficient data for a planned programme resulting in poor returns on investment. Fortunately however, as far as groundnut is concerned, authentic data have been preserved and they are helpful in proposing a proper approach towards success in the task. It is common knowledge that a two-pronged approach is by far safe and proper in maximising production and they are 'extensive' and 'intensive' cultivation. An attempt is made in this paper in proposing criteria for the two basic methods for boosting groundnut production in Tamil Nadu.

Sale of Groundnut in North Arcot District

Out of a normal production of one lakh tons of groundnut kernels in North Arcot district about 5,000 tons are utilised for edible purposes. Nearly 12,000 tons of kernels are required for seed material and this quantity is sold as pods in the villages. The rest 83,000 tons are assembled in the various centres, as pods or as kernels and sold either directly or through commission mundies or have them auctioned in the decorticating premises to the consumers like the exporters and the oil crushers or to the merchants.
