The mysterious root length

reflecting the difficulty in extracting fine roots from the soil, and the enormous length these roots can attain. For example, Dittmer (1937) excavated the entire root system of a single rye plant, which consisted of 13,815,672 branches and had a total length of 622 km with a surface area of 237 m, and a total root hair length of 11,000 km. Since then, progress has been made in the methodology of assessing root length and in understanding the variation in it, but there still remains an air of mystery around root length as even the newest findings are often contradictory. Investigations have often focused on Specific Root Length (SRL), a trait which characterizes the economical aspects of a root system, stating the costs––mass––per potential return––root length. SRL has been shown to increase, decrease, or stay constant in response to nutrient limitation (Ryser 1998). Furthermore, root length does not always respond to specific ions, such as nitrate or phosphate, in manner like theories based on the mobility of these ions would predict (Robinson 1996; Leyser and Fitter 1998). In this issue, Hill et al. (2006) describe an elegant experiment to tackle this mystery. They investigate the variation in specific root length and root surface area in response to variation in N and P supply among 10 temperate pasture species with contrasting root morphologies and contrasting N and P requirements. They investigate the traits contributing to variation in root surface area: biomass allocation to roots, SRL, root fineness and tissue mass density. The results show that the root morphology of a species indeed corresponds well with its phosphorus requirements. The data also clearly illustrate the general importance of phenotypic plasticity for the maintenance of resource acquisition capacity at low levels of the resource, as all species were able to maintain a fairly constant root length across a wide range of P treatments, despite a large variation in total plant mass and root mass. However, the degree of the plastic response was not related to the P uptake capacity of the species, and the patterns cannot readily be generalized. In response to P limitation, some species changed their biomass allocation pattern, some changed root fineness, and others root tissue mass density. There was no consistent relationship in the nutrient level at which the species began to modify their root characteristics and their nutrient requirement. P. This paper attempts to provide insights into how community goals and street design processes become misaligned. Through a case study approach reviewing a current design, it also offers strategies showing how future street design processes must be more than an act of engineering. Good street design is an act of community planning, with engineering expertise helping to execute those plans. Once those involved in street design processes begin to recognize this, the approach will be different, the discussions will be different, and above all, the outcomes will be different.

Communication Strategy Analysis of a Community-Initiated Social Mobilisation Against a Road Dike Project in Taguig, Metro Manila, Philippines

This study analysed the communication strategies employed by a community in Metro Manila through the Taguig Coalition Against Dike (TACAD), a people’s organisation, in a social mobilisation (socmob) against the Laguna Lake Road Dike Project (LLRDP). The most commonly mentioned by the 131 resident-respondents, four key informants and focus group discussion participants were interpersonal strategies such as house-to-house visit, informal discussion and consultation as well as meetings. Those strategies were perceived to be effective in terms of increasing environmental awareness and confidence to negotiate, together with their ability to empower. The most notable accomplishment of the TACAD’s socmob was the three-month moratorium of the road dike’s construction. Nevertheless, the road dike project was not completely stopped due to some factors beyond the control of the community residents. Drawing from the lessons learnt from this research, there is a need to study the collective and participatory approaches used by those directly affected by a government-initiated infrastructure project from the planning until evaluation stage.

Long-term field research in anthropology

Chronicling Cultures provides readers with de tailed case histories of ethnographic projects that are long term in duration, lasting decades in some cases and often involving multiple collaborators and new generations of re searchers. The central theme of the text is that extended time spent in the field leads to both qualitative and quantita tive transformations in research. Contributors to the volume examine these transformations with respect to the data gath ering process, the theoretical outcomes of long-term re search, the impacts on host communities and the many problems and benefits of spending extended time in the field through multiple revisits and restudies. The volume will be of especial interest to those interested in the history of anthropology and to a lesser degree those interested in field methods. For three years, when I lived in Chicago, I commuted downtown by catching the Ravenswood El (also known as the Brown Line) at Addison. While it was for me—as for thousands of daily commuters—principally a way to get to work, it was also an inspiring, daily reminder of the vastness and variety of the city.And when visitors who wanted a relaxing way to get a feel for Chicago but who didn’t have time for lengthy tours (or the patience for city traffic), I always told them to hop the Ravenswood line.APA members staying at hotels in or near downtown will find stops at the Merchandise Mart or any of several stations in a circular path around “the Loop.” Traveling north, the Ravenswood intersects with other train lines for easy access to North Side landmarks, restaurants, and parks.As the editors of Sweet Home Chicago: The Real City Guide (Chicago Review Press, 1993) note, a ride on the Ravenswood El is not unlike taking a double-decker tour bus in London—but without the tour fee. For the price of a CTA fare card ($1.50) you can conduct your own tour, with a vista of the city both east and west, riding above the noise and traffic of the city.The Real City Guide, taking the reader on a ride from north to south, captures it well: “Starting out at almost any station on the North Side, you’ll pass blocks of typical Chicago residential streets. Loop-bound between Belmont and Armitage, the buildings get increasingly elegant; the view in both directions at the Armitage stop shows gracious two-flats with ornamentation just about at eye level. Looking forward, you get a good glimpse of the approaching Chicago skyline, with the John Hancock building off to the left and the Sears Tower straight ahead. Between the Armitage and Sedgwick stops, the track takes a few twists and turns, so you get a little roller-coaster action along with the sightseeing experience.”The track straightens and heads south after Sedgwick, with the River North gallery district immediately ahead, Old Town and the high-priced Gold Coast to the left, and the Cabrini-Green housing project to the right. After the Chicago stop, the train heads straight for the mammoth Merchandise Mart.“Above the broad brick expanse of the mart you’ll see a sliver of green glass, the 333 West Wacker Building, and on top of that hovers the Sears Tower. Three generations of Chicago architecture in a single slice.”And then, as the Real City Guide notes, comes the best part of the ride: crossing the Chicago River into the urban canyon that is the Loop. On a bright day, with the sun illuminating the bridges and buildings, the view of the river from the train can be truly impressive. To the left are the twin towers of Marina City (known locally as the corn-cob towers), one of the city’s distinctive landmarks. To the right, 333 Wacker reflects the river’s gentle curve.Once in the Loop, the train makes a turn east at Van Buren and passes the Harold Washington Library. To the left along Van Buren are two venerable old Chicago office buildings, the Fisher and the Monadnock. The train loops back north on Wabash Avenue, where it runs close enough to the buildings to allow visitors a peek inside the windows. Gabapentin and Venlafaxine for the Treatment of Painful Diabetic Neuropathy

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of gabapentin and venlafaxine in the treatment of painful diabetic neuropathy in patients whose pain did not improve with gabapentin monotherapy. (1) A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 8-week clinical trial comparing gabapentin versus placebo to define a patient population whose pain did not improve with monotherapy; (2) a second 8-week trial comparing gabapentin plus venlafaxine with gabapentin plus placebo; (3) a third uncontrolled 8-week trial of patients who did not improve on gabapentin monotherapy and then received venlafaxine in addition to gabapentin. (1) Gabapentin-treated patients showed statistically significant improvement in pain reduction as well as improvement in quality of life and mood disturbance when compared with placebo-treated patients; (2) patients who received gabapentin plus venlafaxine showed significant improvement in pain reduction, mood disturbance, and quality of life when compared with patients treated with gabapentin plus placebo; (3) patients who received gabapentin plus venlafaxine showed significant improvement in pain reduction, mood disturbance, and quality of life. (1) Gabapentin is efficacious in the treatment of painful diabetic neuropathy; (2) and (3) in patients who do not respond to gabapentin monotherapy, the addition of venlafaxine is also efficacious.

After eighteen years of experience with this design tool, some limitations have been identified. One shortcoming of the stability graph method is the fact that it does not contain a factor that accounts for the presence of faults near the stope surface. This criticism is a legitimate one, considering that most metalliferous orebodies are associated with faults by their genesis, and that invariably, dilution in many open stopes is often related to the presence of faults. Therefore, a procedure that leads to the incorporation of a factor to account for faults in the stability graph has been developed to significantly improve the stability graph in predicting stope performance. Fault factor curves for use in the Canadian Shield where the in situ stress ratio K is often close to 2 have been proposed. This paper validates the use of the fault factor with case histories from the Kidd #3 Mine in Timmins, Ontario, Canada, and presents a stability graph that accounts for faults. The fault factor reduces the stability number N and improves the prediction of stope performance and improves dilution control. Two statistical indices are also presented for assessing the reliability of the stability graph in predicting open stope performance. For Blacks in Chicago the economic depression of 1929 began to show its signs as early as 1928. Concentrated in low wage employments they quickly found themselves replaced by their white counterparts or fired altogether. For those who lived in Lake Street, located on the West Side of the City, the depression gave the opportunity to renew their ties as a community, and redefined the meaning of self- help and responsibility to the community. In the same manner, it is in the depression era that a key structural change, one of the most important after emancipation, was to take place. For it is at that time that the gradual but slow conversion of African Americans from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party was to take place.

Original forms and initial modifications of the Galway Lake Road scarp formed along the Emerson fault during the 28 June 1992 Landers, California, earthquake

A remarkable scarp formed southeast of the Galway Lake Road during the Mw 7.3 Landers, California earthquake. Over the first 11 months following the earthquake, we repeated topographic surveys and ground stereoscopic photography, and interpreted the observations of original forms and initial modifications of the faulted landforms. The complexity of the surface rupture influenced the geomorphic responses. The principal shear zone consisted of en-echelon right- and left-lateral, generally left-stepping, fault segments with cumulative offsets of 5 m right-lateral and 2.5 m vertical. Typical fault scarp profiles have different slope angles above and below the surface rupture and a small free face. The surface rupture formed steep, irregular knickpoints in channels crossing the scarp. The original channel surfaces were warped as they stepped down over tilted and rotated fracture-bounded blocks. The landforms were modified measurably by the above-average winter 1992-1993 rainfall. Over surfaces controlled by hillslope processes only, fault scarp erosion was controlled by rainsplash and slumping. Originally sharp corners were rounded and loose sediment collected in colluvial wedges. Surface flows over simple ramp steps in channel profiles caused incision that drove knick-points back by as much as 50 cm. Over more complex portions of the principal shear zone, flow was diverted into open fractures and little modification of the scarp occurred. The pre-earthquake topography at the site provided no clear evidence of the last similar slip event. Simple diffusion erosion models of the time required to bring the new scarp to its pre-Landers event configuration indicate that the last major rupture may have been several thousand years ago.
