Challenges in Building Interpersonal Communication Skills between Students with Academic Supervisor

The study aims to examine the communication patterns of students with academic supervisors in building good interpersonal communication. The impact of establishing good interpersonal communication between students and academic supervisors can increase the enthusiasm for learning and student motivation in lectures. The research subjects were students majoring in Islamic Communication and Broadcasting (KPI) Faculty of Da'wah IAIN Syekh Nurjati Cirebon. The research used is a case study-based qualitative approach. The study results indicate that the factors that encourage the establishment of good interpersonal communication between students and their supervisors include polite attitudes both through the media and when visiting the lecturer's house. Face-to-face communication and personal communication. The challenges and barriers to interpersonal communication that occurs between students and supervisors are explained by several things, namely the lack of openness in students, the way of interpersonal communication between students and lecturers, setting the guidance schedule with academic lecturers, inactivity of students in interpersonal communication with lecturers and communication patterns that are not effective.

Communication as a retarding business-university cooperation factor

The goal of the article is to show the possibilities of development (improvements) of the business-university cooperation on from the point of view of enterprises. Authors are looking for a balance enabling agile cooperation between the entities (business needs vs university capabilities). In this article the conditions of the cooperation from the point of view of an enterprise were analyzed. Entrepreneurs point to the passive attitude of the universities regarding cooperation, the lack of openness to the business needs or inquiries and low communication. On the other hand, scientists point out the problem of not getting any offers from entrepreneurs [Trzmielak, Grzegorczyk 2014]. The pandemic caused by the virus SARS-CoV2 has shown the weaknesses of enterprises in many sectors. The most common difficulties are communication problems with stakeholders. Businesses are working very quickly on finding new solutions which will facilitate communication and improve the flow of documentation3 . Works using new technologies have significantly accelerated. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has definitely inspired the new generation of crisis communication [Sellnow, Seeger, 2021]. The crisis has forced the creation of new schemes which will be facilitate effective action. The chances of universities cooperating with businesses decreases with the available number of new solutions in the time of the communication crisis. Polish universities definitely miss the marketing orientation. According to businessmen the main barrier is the lack of offers and insufficient information flow. From the business point of view what is interesting is the experience of university employees in assessing the digitalisation of enterprises (Industry 4.0)4 . There is a chance for a development of such cooperation. Time and economic results become important business factors.

The research approach used in this study is qualitative research approach. Data collection techniques in this study were carried out by in-depth interviews and observations. The types of data in this study are: primary data and secondary data. Data analysis techniques in this study use data analysis techniques miles and hubermen, including data reduction (data reduction), data presentation (data display) and drawing conclusions and verification (conclusion drawing / verification). The results of this study indicate that there are 7 patterns of interaction between consignment traders and shop owners, namely: making mutually beneficial business agreements, cooperation on the basis of mutual trust, mutual understanding of each other's character, respecting different cultures, disputes for breaking the agreement, lack of openness, and conflict of interest.

Stability and development of Transdanubian agricultural enterprises

Personal fulfilment, financial security, flexibility, relationships, information, rules - these are all hallmarks of entrepreneurship. Furthermore, one more important factor should be added to the list, which enables satisfaction resulting from reliable income and self-fulfillment: this is openness. An open mind to changes, to novelties, and to the workforce is necessary. The central question of the present research is how to effectively develop Hungarian small and medium-sized agricultural enterprises, especially in the Transdanubian region, by utilizing these factors. In addition to production, institutional and price risks, agricultural enterprises, like other sectors, are also affected by massive labour shortages and resource-intensive development objectives. In the research, primary agricultural producers, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises were surveyed through questionnaire in the second and third quarters of 2019. Using the snowball method, both the development opportunities and the risks were mapped in this sector, mostly among growers. The research results show that there is a correlation between satisfaction and development and favorable workplace relationships. These correlations were presented by demonstrating the relationship between technological development, income satisfaction, stable job creation, and the need to try new developments. However, there seems to be an invisible boundary to development in the examined field, which may stem from uncertainty, and yet, it is important to maintain development and learning activity so that the right knowledge and know-how is available to the business when needed. Since the results show that there is a lack of openness to new technologies among the farmers in the studied region, and this may pose a problem in the future in terms of meeting the expectations of precision farming, it is recommended to focus on innovation in the agricultural sector in Hungary.

Pricing in online fashion retailing: implications for research and practice

ABSTRACT Drawing on 55 interviews with executives across five online fashion retailers, this paper explores the challenges of price setting and management. We develop a descriptive model of ‘locked-in’ pricing practice to explain organisational routines focused on cost-plus pricing, alignment with competitor prices and historical pricing. Drivers include the complex and uncertain outcomes of pricing, and lack of investment in leading-edge pricing methodologies, together with inadequate training and pricing ownership. Outcomes comprise an aversion to price risk-taking, sees decisions guided by heuristics and a lack of openness to alternative pricing methods. We offer implications for pricing practice to overcome these locked-in behaviours and suggest that research addresses challenges encountered in the implementation of new pricing techniques in organisational settings to narrow the gap between theory and practice.

Study on natural ventilation performance in flats design at Banda Aceh

Flats are one of the solutions to housing problems faced by all countries in the world, especially developing countries like Indonesia. Flats are intended for low-income society. But ventilation problems often occur in some vertical housing due to non-optimal layout and lack of openings in each unit. The cheapest solution is to optimize the natural ventilation to expediting air circulation from inside to outside. The purpose of this study is to review natural ventilation performance in flats design at Banda Aceh. Natural ventilation offers healthy and comfortable air circulation without additional energy. The performance of natural ventilation is affected by the building’s layout and orientation, the opening’s orientations, locations, dimensions, types and the air-flow controller. The methodology used is the observation method with a descriptive survey that aims to look for symptoms with an observation method. The study begins with a field study and then conducts an analysis to compare existing conditions with theoretical studies. The results obtained are the design of these flats has been designed to be able to maximize the natural ventilation system, but the air movement cannot be felt by the occupants due to the opening’s dimensions which is not following the existing standards.

Current Changes in Primary Education: The issue of “different” in a primary school mathematics classroom

In the setting of the transformation of our societies to become multicultural ones, we intend in this paper to examine situations in a mathematics classroom where respect for, and exclusion of, the ‘different’ co-exist. Conducting an instrumental case study, we follow two Grade 4 groups while they are solving a mathematics generalization task. We examine how the interaction that took place between the members of the teams mirrors the two faces of the same coin (i.e. the culture of the classroom) and at the same time reflects the change in the primary classroom that necessitates openness and genuine respect for the ‘different’. On the one hand, we will demonstrate the dynamic of the harmony that was apparent between the members of one of the groups since the ‘different’ was not a barrier but a source of mathematical ideas that contributed to the solution. On the other hand, the lack of openness in the other group resulted in good opportunities for ‘doing mathematics’ being missed and put the self-confidence of one of its members at risk. Institutional and Cultural Barriers to ACP: Staff Perspectives

This study explored staff knowledge and engagement in assisting residents/families with ACP. Focus groups were conducted at two long-term care homes, one Exclusively Chinese (EC; n = 25); one Multi-Ethnic (ME; n = 41). In each, separate focus groups were held with registered staff, care aides, and support staff who also completed brief surveys providing socio-demographic data and information about their training and experience with ACP. Perceived barriers to engagement in ACP included limited knowledge and inadequate training in facilitating ACP, cognitive impairment of residents, language barriers, lack of openness to discussing ACP, family expectations and misinformation. EC staff also considered cultural and religious beliefs as one of the main barriers to engaging in ACP both for residents and families; staff at ME focused more on timing and the role of family. Support staff and care aides did not perceive ACP as within their scope of practice, deferring to nurses.

Narrowing the gap in careers in clinical research and academia for healthcare professionals

Differential attainment (DA) exists in research and academia, where individuals with protected characteristics face barriers to progression at different stages from selection in training or career pathways through to obtaining funding and getting research published. The causes of DA are multifactorial, however, more barriers are associated with an individual’s gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability or other social and economic factors rather than academic factors related to research. DA is seen across medicine and healthcare therefore it is likely a manifestation of wider inequalities experienced by these individuals within a society. This scoping review takes a first step at exploring DA through the lens of equality, diversity and inclusion in research and academia, specific to healthcare professionals in medicine, in the UK. Given the paucity of published data, benchmarking and investigation of the causes of DA and access in this area, this review seeks to identify what published reports exploring this issue reveal. There has been mixed success in the area of gender equality with the Athena Swan benchmarking exercise; however differences in outcomes exist within gender when other protected characteristics, such as ethnicity, are also explored. The DA observed among women despite the Athena Swan programme demonstrates other factors such as allyship, apprenticeship, sponsorship and mentoring which may be accessible to some individuals, but not others. Furthermore, ethnicity appears to be a barrier to accessing this form of support, and non-Black and minority ethnic women appear to be more privileged to receiving this type of support. Without more research into the lived experiences of individuals from non-traditional backgrounds at the micro-level, as well as data across the career progression pathway overtime at the macro-level, the problem of DA is unlikely to improve. If anything, lack of openness and transparency around such data at an organisational level, may exacerbate the sense of injustice within research and academia among individuals with protected characteristics, especially given that the perceived sense of DA is very real for them. The purpose of this paper is to start the conversation with stakeholders within research and academia, about DA and commence the process of reducing the gap using equality, diversity and inclusion as fundamental concepts for achieving a level playing field for all. This type of accountability is essential for developing trust and in the system. Such open conversations need to happen across every organisation, that is a stakeholder of research and academia in the UK.

In search of open and inclusive arenas: Transnational practice of communicative planning in Yongtai, China

This study reflects a transnational application of communicative planning in Yongtai County's Rural Vitalization Program. Facing severe conflicts in contemporary regeneration practice, Chinese scholars have sought solutions from communicative planning theory to relieve the tension. However, few studies have applied the principles of communicative planning to real projects in China to evaluate its feasibility in practice. This study provides an overview of challenges faced in the implementation of Yongtai's Yefeng Beautiful Countryside project through post-project interviews and archival analysis. The results indicate that the lack of openness and inclusion prevents the effectiveness of communicative actions in this transnational practice, and its full application may need an institutional shift beyond planning.

빅데이터 기반 다중언어 문화이미지프레임망 구축 구상

This research is to construct the multi-lungual Cultural Image Network Element(CIFN) based on big-data framework. Our research team has already made a desktop application version Korean-Japanese CEMS at LEE & Han(2016) with a purpose of enhancing language education efficiency. Since then, we could produce several achievements which extract cultural elements from the corpus of each language. But we could find that the CEMS has several limitations i.e. 1. basically, CEMS is a desktop version application with lack of openness, 2. CEMS handles limited languages, Korean and Japanese, 3. The corpuses which CEMS depends on have only the fixed data. In this paper, we try to find out the way out to overcome the limitations which CEMS has by constructing the Cultural-Image-Frame-Network.

The Trust‐Based Communicative Obligations of Expert Authorities

AbstractThis article analyses the extent to which expert authorities have basic communicative obligations to be open, honest, and transparent, with a view to shaping strategies of public engagement with such authorities. This article is in part a response to epistemic paternalists such as Stephen John, who argue that the communicative obligations of expert authorities, such as scientists, permit the use of lying, or lack of openness and transparency, as a means of sustaining public trust in scientific authority. In this article, I elucidate John’s position and reject it. I argue that expert authorities have strong communicative obligations to be open, honest, and transparent, which are grounded in the insight that such authorities hold positions of public trust. After demonstrating how this insight undermines John’s position, I conclude the article by considering the implications regarding public engagement with expert authorities.

Displacement ventilation: a viable ventilation strategy for makeshift hospitals and public buildings to contain COVID-19 and other airborne diseases.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus has so far infected more than 31 million people around the world, and its impact is being felt by all. Patients with diseases such as COVID-19 should ideally be treated in negative pressure isolation rooms. However, due to the overwhelming demand for hospital beds, patients have been treated in general wards, hospital corridors and makeshift hospitals. Adequate building ventilation in hospitals and public spaces is a crucial factor to contain the disease (Escombe et al. 2007 PLoS Med. 4; Escombe et al. 2019 BMC Infect. Dis. 19, 88 (doi:10.1186/s12879-019-3717-9); Morawska & Milton 2020 Clin. Infect. Dis. ciaa939. (doi:10.1093/cid/ciaa939)), to exit lockdown safely, and reduce the chance of subsequent waves of outbreaks. A recently reported air-conditioner-induced COVID-19 outbreak caused by an asymptomatic patient, in a restaurant in Guangzhou, China (Lu et al. 2020 Emerg. Infect. Dis. 26) exposes our vulnerability to future outbreaks linked to ventilation in public spaces. We argue that displacement ventilation (either mechanical or natural ventilation), where air intakes are at low level and extracts are at high level, is a viable alternative to negative pressure isolation rooms, which are often not available on site in hospital wards and makeshift hospitals. Displacement ventilation produces negative pressure at the occupant level, which draws fresh air from outdoors, and positive pressure near the ceiling, which expels the hot and contaminated air out. We acknowledge that, in both developed and developing countries, many modern large structures lack the openings required for natural ventilation. This lack of openings can be supplemented by installing extract fans. We have also discussed and addressed the issue of the ‘lock-up effect’. We provide guidelines for such mechanically assisted, naturally ventilated makeshift hospitals.

Accessing Public Contracts in Ghana: The Case of Small and Medium Enterprises

Public procurement is seen as an avenue to increase business opportunities by Small and Medium Enterprises but this goal has been hindered due to the challenges in accessing public contracts in Ghana. The study sought to ascertain the depth of knowledge in procurement practices by the owner/managers of SMEs in Ghana and also identify and or examine the challenges faced by SMEs i n the public procurement process, so as to know where government interventions would be needed. The study was conducted in the Greater Accra Region. A Focus Group Discussion was organised for the owner/managers of SMEs. This sub-sample were members of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) in Accra. A total of 112 owner/managers were available for the last quarter meeting, 9 groups of 14 members each were organised for the focus group discussions. It was discovered that the content of the tender documents were totally or to a large extent left at the discretion of the one procuring it. This could lead to subjective buying and the buying of inferior items. It could also be concluded in this study that the Act had fallen short in bringing the needed transparency with respect to the use of public funds by entity officials. There exist numerous allegations of dishonest deals and lack of openness in procurement practices in Ghana. Furthermore, this research revealed that the actions of procurement entities fall short of the provisions of the Act and that the suppliers and contractors (SMEs) were not privy to these decisions.

Rediscovering Tomkins' polarity theory: Humanism, normativism, and the psychological basis of left-right ideological conflict in the U.S. and Sweden.

According to Silvan Tomkins’ polarity theory, ideological thought is universally structured by a clash between two opposing worldviews. On the left, a humanistic worldview seeks to uphold the intrinsic value of the person; on the right, a normative worldview holds that human worth is contingent upon conformity to rules. In this article, we situate humanism and normativism within the context of contemporary models of political ideology as a function of motivated social cognition, beliefs about the social world, and personality traits. In four studies conducted in the U.S. and Sweden, normativism was robustly associated with rightist (or conservative) self-placement; conservative issue preferences; resistance to change and acceptance of inequality; right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation; system justification and its underlying epistemic and existential motives to reduce uncertainty and threat; and a lack of openness, emotionality, and honesty-humility. Humanism exhibited the opposite relations to most of these constructs, but it was largely unrelated to epistemic and existential needs. Humanism was strongly associated with preferences for equality, openness to change, and low levels of authoritarianism, social dominance, and general and economic system justification. We conclude that polarity theory possesses considerable potential to explain how conflicts between worldviews shape contemporary politics.

Substance Use Disorder Treatment, Perceived Need for Treatment, and Barriers to Treatment Among Parenting Women With Substance Use Disorder in US Rural Counties.

Higher rates of substance use in rural counties compared to urban counties have been well documented. Low perceived need for treatment among those with substance use disorder (SUD) has also been documented in the literature. However, not much is known about SUD treatment among parenting women in rural counties and the impact of perceived need for treatment in seeking care. Little research has also examined barriers to SUD treatment among parenting women in rural communities. Using a large nationally representative dataset, the study utilizes multivariable logistic regression models to estimate the differences in utilizing SUD treatment among parenting women with SUD in rural and urban counties in the United States. Role of perceived need for SUD treatment and barriers related to finance, access, and stigma are also examined. Parenting women in rural counties with SUD who perceive a need for treatment have more than 90% lower odds of receiving treatment compared to those in urban counties. In addition, parenting women with SUD in rural counties have more than 50% higher odds of identifying access-related issues such as lack of openings in programs, unavailability of treatment facilities, and lack of transportation as barriers to care compared to parenting women in urban counties. Diagnosis of SUD among parenting women is steadily increasing in rural communities. While many resources in combatting maternal SUD are being utilized, policy and programmatic responses tailored for mothers with SUD in rural communities might help increase utilization of treatment and reduce barriers to treatment.

Fracking, Federalism, and Private Governance

The United States is in the midst of a natural gas boom, made possible by advances in drilling and extraction technologies. There is considerable disagreement about the relative benefits and costs of the boom, but one thing is certain: it has caught governments flat-footed. The federal government has done little more than commission a study of some associated public health and environmental risks. States have moved faster to address natural gas risks, but with little consistency or transparency. Numerous private organizations are beginning to fill the resulting governance gaps with information-gathering and standards-setting efforts. This Paper documents these efforts and then uses a concrete policy proposal — the development of sustainable shale gas credits — to argue that these private entities are well positioned to facilitate the development and horizontal and vertical diffusion of innovative public governance strategies. In other words, these entities are fulfilling the experimentation function once assigned to states in so-called “laboratory federalism.” The Paper ends on a cautionary note, however. Private governance efforts often suffer from a lack of openness, balance, and accountability. Worse, there is reason to fear that familiar procedural reforms aimed at fixing those problems for public agencies may work far less well in the private context.

Effective Staff Relationships as An Impetus for Growth in 21st Century Church

Effective staff relationships is a stimulus to church developmental growth in all facets of church life. It is expedient that each church and religious organizations should imbibe because of its benefits that cannot be overemphasized. This paper considers the necessity of staff relationships for growth in the 21 st Century church by exploring into the biblical perspective of staff relationships. The necessity of staff relationships was also consider, such as it enhances mutual encouragement both personal and spiritual; it facilitates and improve the workforce; it promotes growth in all facets; teamwork, delegation and supervision are enhanced; it is problem-solving; it is enjoyable and broaden staff understanding, and building a Christlike attitude and relationships are not exempted. The possible challenges in staff relationships were also considered, such as staining, denting and destroying each other reputation and integrity. Mistrust and lack of sincere commitment among staff members. Inattentive to staff voices, preferential treatment and rivalry. Lack of recognition, motivation and appreciation of staff. The unconducive atmosphere and lack of openness and the spirit of cooperation. Excessive use of power and social stratification; and unforgiving spirit. The paper concludes that staff relationships are inevitable in contemporary churches and religious organizations. Healthy staff relationships should be built and encouraged for efficiency, growth, productivity and fulfilment of the primary purpose of multi-staff both between the volunteer staff members, non-ministerial staff and ministerial staff.
