Persistence of 2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-trinitrobenzene in the environment

2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TATB) is an Insensitive High Explosive (IHE) that is increasingly being used as a safer alternative to traditional energetic materials. However, the high thermal stability of TATB poses challenges for its disposal, particularly through existing open burning methods and its ability to remain in the environment for long period of time. Therefore, this study investigated the persistence of TATB in the environment by conducting small-scale experiments which were designed to examine the resistance of TATB to open burning and to assess unburnt residues. To evaluate the fate and transport of the unburnt materials in soil, laboratory-scale soil column transport studies were conducted to gauge the movement of TATB through soil. The results indicate that TATB exhibits a high resistance to burning, leaving unburnt materials that can persist in soil. The study emphasizes the importance of efficient disposal methods for explosives and highlights the need for further research to understand the environmental impact and toxicity of TATB.

The Technical Challenges for Applying Unsaturated Soil Sensors to Conduct Laboratory-Scale Seepage Experiments.

Although many unsaturated soil experiments have successfully delivered positive outcomes, most studies just concisely illustrated sensor techniques, because their main objectives focused on bridging research gaps. Inexperienced research fellows might rarely follow up those techniques, so they could encounter very trivial and skill-demanding difficulties, undermining the quality of experimental outcomes. With a motivation to avoid those, this work introduces technical challenges in applying three sensor techniques: high precision tensiometer, spatial time-domain reflectometry (spatial TDR) and digital bench scales, which were utilized to measure three fundamental variables: soil suction, moisture content and accumulative outflow. The technical challenges are comprehensively elaborated from five aspects: the functional mechanism, assembling/manufacturing approaches, installation procedure, simultaneous data-logging configurations and post data/signal processing. The conclusions drawn in this work provide sufficient technical details of three sensors in terms of the aforementioned five aspects. This work aims to facilitate any new research fellows who carry out laboratory-scale soil column tests using the three sensors mentioned above. It is also expected that this work will salvage any experimenters having troubleshooting issues with those sensors and help researchers bypass those issues to focus more on their primary research interests.

NDMA and NDMA precursor attenuation in environmental buffers prior to groundwater recharge for potable reuse

Natural attenuation of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and NDMA precursors was evaluated in infiltration basins, a riverbed filtration system, and constructed wetlands operated as part of a managed aquifer recharge system. Initial NDMA concentrations up to 9.0 ng/L in infiltration basins (advanced purified, recycled water) before sunrise declined to non-detect (<1.5 ng/L) by 10:00 A.M due to natural photolysis (half-life of 33 to 86 min dependent on solar irradiance). NDMA fortified controls adjacent to the infiltration basin showed similar results, while concentrations in dark controls did not change over the basin's hydraulic retention time. NDMA precursor concentrations did not change significantly in the basin containing advanced-treated water from a potable reuse treatment plant, indicating that photolysis did not remove NDMA precursors nor did photolysis produce a significant amount of precursors. For the other environmental buffers evaluated, NDMA removal was variable through laboratory scale soil columns (22 cm height), in full-scale riverbed filtration system that pre-filters water prior to infiltration basin recharge, and in the constructed wetland. Variability in NDMA removal through the wetlands is attributed to high turbidity. In the case of the riverbed filtration system, variability is likely due to short exposure times to sunlight. For the soil columns, limited NDMA removal is attributed to inefficacy of soil aquifer treatment in removing NDMA over short travel times/distances. NDMA precursors were also ineffectively removed in these systems, with effluent concentrations occasionally exceeding influent concentrations. Overall, the removal of NDMA in environmental buffers utilized for planned or de facto indirect potable reuse is dependent on the system's capacity for photolysis, while NDMA precursors are more recalcitrant and unlikely to be removed in such systems without enhancement or sufficient hydraulic residence times.

Improved sequential injection method for phosphate quantification within a wide dynamic range with in-line pre-concentration to monitor soil leachates

Phosphate is a well-known contaminant and its content is an indicator of water quality, so it is important to have an efficient monitoring of the soil leaching process.In this work, an automatic, low cost flow analysis method, capable of real-time monitoring of the soil leaching processes using spectrophotometric detection, based on the molybdenum blue reaction, was developed. The developed methodology for phosphate determination was based on the molybdenum blue reaction and includes an on-line solid phase extraction (SPE) step, involving an AG1-X8 anionic exchange sorbent.The described SI method enabled phosphate determination within a wide range, 1–80 µM, with a detection limit of 0.52 µM. It was successfully applied to leachates from laboratory scale soil columns (LSSC) and one sample analysis was carried out in triplicate, in less than 10 minutes.

Integrated Flow-based System Displaying an In-line Mini Soil Column to Monitor Iron Species in Soils Leachates

ABSTRACT Contamination of ground water as a consequence of soil leaching processes is an issue of major concern. In this context, a simulation of the soil leaching process was designed. A sequential injection (SI) method to monitor the soil leaching of iron complexes with in-line rain simulation for leachate production is described. The developed methodology comprises the SI determination of both iron(III) and 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinones iron(III) complexes, coupled to a mini soil column (mSC) for displaying in-line rain simulations. The described SI method enabled iron(III) determination within the range 2.0–35 µmol L−1, with a detection limit of 0.42 µmol L−1, and determination of iron(III) complexes in the range 1.0–45 µmol L−1. It was successfully applied to leachates from laboratory scale soil columns (LSSC), with good precision for both iron(III) and iron complexes determinations: calculated relative standard deviation (RSD) of 5% and 6%, respectively. A step further in automation and miniaturization was attained with the incorporation of a mini soil column for the in-line leachate production. The system enabled the soil leachate production and assessment in less than 5 min, including determinations in triplicate.

Exploiting flow analysis as a tool for monitoring the leaching process of micronutrients using laboratory scale soil columns (LSSCs)

Laboratory scale soil columns (LSSCs) proved to be an effective method to study the leaching process and the developed SI method enabled efficient monitoring of both leachates and simulated rain.

Influence of algal organic matter on the attenuation of selected trace organic contaminants and dissolved organic matter in managed aquifer recharge: column studies

In this study, the effects of algal organic matter (AOM) from Microcystis aeruginosa on the attenuation of selected trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) were observed in managed aquifer recharge using laboratory scale soil columns.

Returning Degraded Soils to Productivity: an Examination of the Potential of Coarse Woody Amendments for Improved Water Retention and Nutrient Holding Capacity

Soil degradation and desertification from agricultural land use is a serious and growing problem worldwide. Bringing degraded soils back into production is crucial to stop the cycle of land degradation, followed by abandonment and a subsequent shift of agricultural pressure to previously uncultivated soils. To return degraded and desertified landscapes to productivity, sandy soils must first be improved to enhance water and nutrient holding capacity. In this study we examine the ability of incorporated coarse woodchips to alter water holding capacity in very sandy, degraded soils in the field, complemented by soil column experiments in the laboratory examining the mechanisms behind changes in water retention. In the second phase of our lab studies, we examined nutrient losses, both soluble and gaseous, from laboratory-scale soil columns under different fertilization application regimes. Coarse woodchips incorporated into the soil increased water holding capacity by 16% in the field and 18% in the laboratory which was attributed to absorption of water by the woodchips, with limited evidence of the occurrence of flow path disruption. Soluble nutrient losses of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were smallest when fertilizer was applied in liquid form, as opposed to incorporated or surface-applied dry granules. Carbon dioxide emissions increased by 200% in the presence of woodchips, likely due to increased respiration by the microbial biomass. This study suggests that incorporating coarse wood chips into the soil is a viable strategy for increasing water and nutrient retention in very sandy and degraded soils and can provide a basis for enhancing ecological processes. More work is needed to examine whether increased water retention by woodchips also increases the availability of water and nutrients to plants.

The impact of biodegradable carbon sources on microbial clogging of vertical up-flow sand filters treating inorganic nitrogen wastewater.

The addition of biodegradable carbon sources to sand filters can enhance microbial activity but may lead to substrate clogging, a major operational problem. In laboratory-scale soil columns emulating vertical up-flow filters, the clogging effect of two readily biodegradable organic substrates-sucrose as a sugar source and ethanol as an alcohol source-were examined with coarse sand as the substrate medium. Wastewater without the addition of supplemental organics and a 'control' treated with tap water were monitored as references. Changes in saturated hydraulic conductivity were measured for all treatments over time. Other parameters that can influence the clogging rate, including temperature, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, protein, and polysaccharides, were measured in the influent and effluent wastewater on a weekly basis. At the end of the clogging experiment, the main layer of each filter bed was separated into three sections and saturated hydraulic conductivity, organic matter content, and protein and polysaccharide concentrations were measured in each section. The rate of clogging development in the columns depended on treatment, with ethanol-treated cores clogging more quickly than sucrose-treated cores. Wastewater-treated cores took far longer to clog and the tap water control did not clog, but the saturated hydraulic conductivity declined by 60% over a year. Saturated hydraulic conductivity within the treated cores declined far less than the calculated decline in saturated hydraulic conductivities for the entire cores at the end of the experiment, indicating that clogging in the vicinity of the inlet plate by microbial mats was a major factor influencing the reduction in flow through the columns. To reduce bio-clogging in inlet filters, it may be advantageous to inject organic amendments directly into the bed, rather than pass them through the filters, as is usually the case.

Soil sealing by algae: An alternative to plastic pond liners for outdoor algal cultivation

Commercial production of algal biofuels is currently limited by high capital costs, particularly costs of synthetic pond liners that minimize seepage of cultivation fluids, salts, and nutrients into the subsurface beneath outdoor algae cultivation facilities. Even some profitable nutraceutical companies bear the high costs of pond liners. However, studies of animal waste holding ponds and aquaculture facilities have shown that underlying soils can effectively “self-seal”, potentially eliminating the need for plastic liners. Here, we explored the potential for self-sealing with algae to provide an alternative to synthetic pond liners in unlined algae cultivation ponds. Laboratory-scale soil column experiments were used to investigate soil clogging by algae, a topic rarely discussed in the literature. Columns composed of fine sand, loamy sand, and loam soil displayed reductions in saturated hydraulic conductivity of the entire soil column of up to two orders of magnitude in response to infiltration by the alga Scenedesmus dimorphus suspended in algal culture nutrient solution at a density of 5 × 108 cells L−1. Scanning electron microscope imaging showed a dense algal layer on the surface of each soil column, thickly coating mineral grains with algal material and filling pore spaces. The algal coating was absent in samples at >3 cm depth in the soil columns, and measurements of chlorophyll content also confirmed that algal cells were mostly confined to the soil surface. In this study, the application of an algal suspension contributed significantly to soil sealing. This new application of biological sealing technology should be studied further to determine its utility and durability as an alternative to plastic liners, perhaps in conjunction with soil compaction to achieve hydraulic conductivities beneath algal production ponds that are protective of groundwater quality.

Biotransformation of trace organic chemicals in the presence of highly refractory dissolved organic carbon

Previous studies demonstrated that the transformation of trace organic chemicals (TOrCs) in managed aquifer recharge (MAR) systems is favored under carbon-limited and oxic redox conditions especially, if the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) serving as primary substrate has a refractory character. Since co-metabolism is suggested to be the dominant removal mechanism, it is hypothesized that TOrCs transformation is controlled by the concentration of the refractory carbon under oxic redox conditions. A laboratory-scale soil column experiment mimicking MAR was established to investigate the influence of two different concentrations of highly refractory carbon sources on TOrCs transformation, namely drinking water (DW) and drinking water augmented with humic acid (DW + HA). Oxic redox conditions and carbon-limitation were present in both systems (ΔDOCDW+HA ≈ 0.6–0.7 mg/L; ΔDOCDW ≈ 0.1 mg/L). Of the 12 TOrCs investigated seven exhibited moderate to efficient transformation in both systems with only one compound (diclofenac) showing significantly enhanced (co-metabolic) biotransformation by adding humic acids as primary growth substrate. It is postulated that transformation of some TOrCs is characterized by metabolic degradation under starving conditions (ΔDOC ≤ 0.1 mg/L). By comparing the transformation efficiency of selected TOrCs with previous studies operated under carbon-limited and oxic conditions, an inconsistent behavior of some compounds was observed. These results demonstrate that key factors triggering the transformation of TOrCs are still poorly understood and thus, further investigations regarding the biodegradation pathways of TOrCs, upregulation of key enzymes by the microbial community but also more detailed analysis of the composition of the biodegradable DOC are needed.

Removal of selected pharmaceuticals and personal care products in reclaimed water during simulated managed aquifer recharge

This study investigated the removal of selected pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in a simulated managed aquifer recharge (MAR) system. The PPCPs included antibiotic, antiepileptic, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, and antilipidemic drugs, contrast media, herbicides, and stimulants. We first monitored the occurrence and fate of 22 PPCPs at a water reclamation facility (WRF) in Korea, and found carbamazepine and primidone were not readily removed (below 25% removal in average) by the WRF. This reclaimed water passed through a laboratory-scale soil column set-up at 0.5 m/d over one year, simulating MAR system. Atenolol, propranolol, and trimethoprim exhibited higher removal rates (>80%) than other PPCPs through the simulated MAR, while atrazine, carbamazepine, lincomycin, primidone, and sulfamethazine were not readily removed, exhibiting removal rates below 20%. It can be efficient to monitor and manage these recalcitrant compounds at MAR systems to improve water quality.

Advancing Sequential Managed Aquifer Recharge Technology (SMART) Using Different Intermediate Oxidation Processes

Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) systems are an efficient barrier for many contaminants. The biotransformation of trace organic chemicals (TOrCs) strongly depends on the redox conditions as well as on the dissolved organic carbon availability. Oxic and oligotrophic conditions are favored for enhanced TOrCs removal which is obtained by combining two filtration systems with an intermediate aeration step. In this study, four parallel laboratory-scale soil column experiments using different intermittent aeration techniques were selected to further optimize TOrCs transformation during MAR: no aeration, aeration with air, pure oxygen and ozone. Rapid oxygen consumption, nitrate reduction and dissolution of manganese confirmed anoxic conditions within the first filtration step, mimicking traditional bank filtration. Aeration with air led to suboxic conditions, whereas oxidation by pure oxygen and ozone led to fully oxic conditions throughout the second system. The sequential system resulted in an equal or better transformation of most TOrCs compared to the single step bank filtration system. Despite the fast oxygen consumption, acesulfame, iopromide, iomeprol and valsartan were degraded within the first infiltration step. The compounds benzotriazole, diclofenac, 4-Formylaminoantipyrine, gabapentin, metoprolol, valsartan acid and venlafaxine revealed a significantly enhanced removal in the systems with intermittent oxidation compared to the conventional treatment without aeration. Further improvement of benzotriazole and gabapentin removal by using pure oxygen confirmed potential oxygen limitation in the second column after aeration with air. Ozonation resulted in an enhanced removal of persistent compounds (i.e., carbamazepine, candesartan, olmesartan) and further increased the attenuation of gabapentin, methylbenzotriazole, benzotriazole, and venlafaxine. Diatrizoic acid revealed little degradation in an ozone–MAR hybrid system.

Numerical simulation of below ground nitrate dynamics in soil columns subjected to reclaimed water

A mathematical model was developed to simulate nitrate mass transport and transformations in soil during continuous application of reclaimed water in a laboratory scale soil column. The coupled material balance equations for both ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO3- -N) within the total soil volume were solved to simulate the NO3—N concentrations with time along the soil depth. The model is one-dimensional and based on the Galerkin technique of the Finite Element Method. It incorporates convection-dispersion processes of NH3-N and NO3--N, nitrification, denitrification and adsorption of ammonium on to soil grains. The adsorption of ammonium was assumed to be represented by the linear form of the Freundlich isotherm. The accuracy and validity of the developed model was examined by comparing simulated data with the experimental data. Optimization of the first order rate constants for nitrification (k1) and denitrification (k2) was conducted by varying both k1 and k2 within a wide range until the simulated NO3--N concentrations fitted properly with the corresponding measured values. Optimum k1 and k2 were found to be 0.188 d-1 and 0.0248 d-1, respectively. A sensitivity analysis of the kinetics of nitrate dynamics showed that the concentration of belowground nitrate is largely affected by the flow velocity (v), D, k1 and k2.

The effect of redox conditions and adaptation time on organic micropollutant removal during river bank filtration: A laboratory-scale column study

This study investigated the redox dependent removal and adaptive behaviour of a mixture of 15 organic micropollutants (OMPs) in laboratory-scale soil columns fed with river water. Three separate pilot systems were used consisting of: (1) two columns, (2) ten columns and (3) twenty two columns to create oxic, suboxic (partial nitrate removal) and anoxic (complete nitrate removal). The pilot set-up has some unique features - it can simulate fairly long residence times (e.g., 45days using the 22 column system) and reduced conditions developed naturally within the system. Dimethoate, diuron, and metoprolol showed redox dependent removal behaviour with higher biodegradation rates in the oxic zone compared to the suboxic/anoxic zone. The redox dependent behaviour of these three OMPs could not be explained based on their physico-chemical properties (hydrophobicity, charge and molecular weight) or functional groups present in the molecular structure. OMPs that showed persistent behaviour in the oxic zone (atrazine, carbamazepine, hydrochlorothiazide and simazine) were also not removed under more reduced conditions. Adaptive behaviour was observed for five OMPs: dimethoate, chloridazon, lincomycin, sulfamethoxazole and phenazone. However, the adaptive behaviour could not be explained by the physico-chemical properties (hydrophobicity, charge and molecular weight) investigated in this study and only rough trends were observed with specific functional groups (e.g. ethers, sulphur, primary and secondary amines). Finally, the adaptive behaviour of OMPs was found to be an important factor that should be incorporated in predictive models for OMP removal during river bank filtration.

The effect of feed water dissolved organic carbon concentration and composition on organic micropollutant removal and microbial diversity in soil columns simulating river bank filtration.

This study investigated organic micropollutant (OMP) biodegradation rates in laboratory-scale soil columns simulating river bank filtration (RBF) processes. The dosed OMP mixture consisted of 11 pharmaceuticals, 6 herbicides, 2 insecticides and 1 solvent. Columns were filled with soil from a RBF site and were fed with four different organic carbon fractions (hydrophilic, hydrophobic, transphilic and river water organic matter (RWOM)). Additionally, the effect of a short-term OMP/dissolved organic carbon (DOC) shock-load (e.g. quadrupling the OMP concentrations and doubling the DOC concentration) on OMP biodegradation rates was investigated to assess the resilience of RBF systems. The results obtained in this study imply that - in contrast to what is observed for managed aquifer recharge systems operating on wastewater effluent - OMP biodegradation rates are not affected by the type of organic carbon fraction fed to the soil column, in case of stable operation. No effect of a short-term DOC shock-load on OMP biodegradation rates between the different organic carbon fractions was observed. This means that the RBF site simulated in this study is resilient towards transient higher DOC concentrations in the river water. However, a temporary OMP shock-load affected OMP biodegradation rates observed for the columns fed with the river water organic matter (RWOM) and the hydrophilic fraction of the river water organic matter. These different biodegradation rates did not correlate with any of the parameters investigated in this study (cellular adenosine triphosphate (cATP), DOC removal, specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA), richness/evenness of the soil microbial population or OMP category (hydrophobicity/charge).

Biotransformation of trace organic chemicals during groundwater recharge: How useful are first-order rate constants?

This study developed relationships between the attenuation of emerging trace organic chemicals (TOrC) during managed aquifer recharge (MAR) as a function of retention time, system characteristics, and operating conditions using controlled laboratory-scale soil column experiments simulating MAR. The results revealed that MAR performance in terms of TOrC attenuation is primarily determined by key environmental parameters (i.e., redox, primary substrate). Soil columns with suboxic and anoxic conditions performed poorly (i.e., less than 30% attenuation of moderately degradable TOrC) in comparison to oxic conditions (on average between 70–100% attenuation for the same compounds) within a residence time of three days. Given this dependency on redox conditions, it was investigated if key parameter-dependent rate constants are more suitable for contaminant transport modeling to properly capture the dynamic TOrC attenuation under field-scale conditions. Laboratory-derived first-order removal kinetics were determined for 19 TOrC under three different redox conditions and rate constants were applied to MAR field data. Our findings suggest that simplified first-order rate constants will most likely not provide any meaningful results if the target compounds exhibit redox dependent biotransformation behavior or if the intention is to exactly capture the decline in concentration over time and distance at field-scale MAR. However, if the intention is to calculate the percent removal after an extended time period and subsurface travel distance, simplified first-order rate constants seem to be sufficient to provide a first estimate on TOrC attenuation during MAR.

Effect of temperature on removal of trace organic chemicals in managed aquifer recharge systems

This study was undertaken to investigate whether changes in temperature experienced in MAR systems affect attenuation of trace organic chemicals (TOrCs). A set of laboratory-scale soil columns were placed in a temperature-controlled environmental chamber and operated at five different temperature set-points (30, 20, 10, 8 and 4°C) covering the range of typical groundwater temperatures in cold, moderate and arid climate regions. Removal of bulk organic carbon both in the infiltration zone as well as during deeper infiltration was independent of temperature. Of the 22 TOrCs investigated, only six chemicals exhibited changes in attenuation as a function of temperature. Attenuation of four of the compounds (diclofenac, gemfibrozil, ketoprofen and naproxen) decreased as the temperature was reduced from 30°C to 4°C, likely due to decreased microbial activity at lower temperatures. As the temperature was decreased, however, attenuation of oxybenzone and trimethoprim were noted to increase. This increased attenuation was likely due to more efficient sorption at lower temperatures, though possible changes in the microbial composition as the temperature decreased may also have contributed to this change. Changes in rate constants of attenuation (ka) for the biotransformed TOrCs with temperature suggested the existence of a critical temperature at 10°C for three of the four TOrCs, where significant changes to rates of attenuation occurred. Results from this study indicated that for most TOrCs, changes in temperature do not impact their attenuation. Thus, seasonal changes in temperature are not considered to be a major concern for attenuation of most TOrCs in MAR systems.

Investigating the role for adaptation of the microbial community to transform trace organic chemicals during managed aquifer recharge

This study was undertaken to investigate whether adaptation by pre-exposure to trace organic chemicals (TOrCs) was necessary for microbial transformation during managed aquifer recharge (MAR). Two pairs of laboratory-scale soil columns, each receiving a different primary substrate, were utilized to simulate the dominant bulk organic carbon present in MAR systems receiving wastewater effluent of varying quality and having undergone different degrees of pre-treatment, as well as organic carbon prevalent at different stages of subsurface travel. Each pair of columns consisted of duplicate set-ups receiving the same feed solution with only one pre-exposed to a suite of eight TOrCs for approximately ten months. Following the pre-exposure period, a spiking experiment was conducted in which the non-exposed columns also received the same suite of TOrCs. TOrC attenuation was quantified for the pre- and non-exposed columns of each pair during the spiking experiment. The microbial community structure and function of these systems were characterized by pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA gene and metagenomics, respectively. Biotransformation rather than sorption was identified as the dominant removal mechanism for almost all the TOrCs (except triclocarban). Similar removal efficiencies were observed between pre-exposed and non-exposed columns for most TOrCs. No obvious differences in microbial community structure were revealed between pre- and non-exposed columns. Using metagenomics, biotransformation capacity potentials of the microbial community present were also similar between pre- and non-exposed columns of each pair. Overall, the pre-exposure of MAR systems to TOrCs at ng/L levels did not affect their attenuation and had no obvious influence on the resulting microbial community structure and function. Thus, other factors such as bioavailability of the primary substrate play a greater role regarding biotransformation of TOrCs. These results indicate that MAR systems adapted to a primary substrate are capable of degrading TOrC without necessarily being pre-exposed to them, making MAR a robust treatment barrier for biodegradable TOrCs.

Influence of intermittent infiltration of primary effluent on removal of suspended solids, bulk organic matter, nitrogen and pathogens indicators in a simulated managed aquifer recharge system

The impact of intermittent application of primary effluent on the removal of suspended solids, bulk organic matter, nitrogen and pathogens indicators during soil aquifer treatment was investigated using 4.2m high laboratory-scale soil columns fitted with sampling ports along the depth. Continuous and intermittent modes of application were adopted using peristaltic pumps to deliver the primary effluent to the columns operated at hydraulic loading rates of 0.625 and 1.25md−1 with varying wetting and drying periods. Experimental results exhibited insignificant change in suspended solids and dissolved organic carbon removals under continuous and intermittent mode of primary effluent application. While the overall removal of suspended solids ranged from 86 to 95%, the overall removal of dissolved organic carbon ranged from 50 to 60% irrespective of the length of wetting and drying period or the hydraulic regime. Nevertheless, reduction of ammonium-nitrogen varied significantly with the length of drying period and the highest reductions of 88.4±0.8 and 98.0±0.1% were achieved at 3.2 days wetting/6.4 days drying and 6.4 days wetting/6.4 days drying, respectively. Likewise, the removal of E. coli and total coliforms increased significantly with the increase in the drying period resulting in more than 4log10 units under similar operating conditions. These results suggest that while removals of suspended solids and dissolved organic carbon were independent of mode of effluent application, removals of nitrogen and pathogens indicators were dependent on the length of the drying cycle.
