Measuring the academic library

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide an Australian perspective of impact and value by examining how the broader international and national perspectives play out in practice in the Australian context and where adaption for local requirements is necessary.Design/methodology/approachThis paper will explore the assessment of impact and value in academic libraries and the tools available to translate today’s inputs into future impact and value. It will focus on a range of methods and procedures, including international and national standards, frameworks and benchmarks.FindingsThe La Trobe University Library is presented as a case study to examine the challenges of leveraging tools to assess impact and communicate the value of the library across the university community.Originality/valueAssessing the impact and demonstrating the value of the academic library in a digital environment is a constant challenge. While usage and service data are plentiful, traditional metrics no longer sufficiently demonstrate the academic library’s contribution to university learning, teaching and research outcomes.

Embracing life-the Bethlehem Schools' Project, an "icebreaker" and "a foot in the door".

This workshop details a Partnership involving a High school, a Hospital (Calvary Health Care Bethlehem), La Trobe University and Palliative Care Victoria which seeks to support Community Capacity and resilience in dealing with Life-Limiting illness, death, dying and Loss. This alliance has produced an educational resource which may be used, not only as a tool to normalize death, but also as a means of exploring 'keys to well-being' at any stage of life, through any loss or challenge. This workshop features a template which has been trialled, adapted and evaluated in High School, workshop and Hospital induction settings within Australia. Responses thus far have been "overwhelmingly positive". Translating evidence of positive outcomes into Education & Health Care Systems, is a challenge-this workshop offers a means of approaching both. The conclusion of the workshop provides a number of insights: (I) engaging communities in discussions about well-being and harnessing the insights of youth is a palatable means of discussing well-being at end-of-life; (II) what we know, as a community about supporting people with life-limiting illness is applicable across the span of life-not just at the end; (III) just as it takes a village to raise a child-it takes a village to ensure a quality end-of life experience. What began as a one-off hospital immersion for Secondary School students has grown to become a sustainable educational resource, applicable across a number of domains-with the capacity to become an evidence-based means of increasing community EOL capacity. This workshop details the evolution of a community partnership, which produced an evaluated, sustainable, educational resource encouraging conversations about death and loss whilst emphasizing the essentials of well-being. It is a potential "foot in the door" of the education system and an "ice-breaker" for new staff/students to Palliative care.

Nature's Above Art (An Illustrated Guide)

This essay describes and analyses a practice-as-research project—an outdoor, winter, promenade, ecodramaturgical, student production of King Lear—conducted at La Trobe University in the first half of 2017. The essay tours the journey of the production, act by act, and meditates upon the discoveries prompted by the practice. These discoveries are themed by: audience engagement; offers and acceptance; the reciprocal impacts of the production / environment; the majesty of trees; and the ecology of theatrical production.

James Douglas Morrison 1924–2013

Jim Morrison was born in Scotland in 1924 and completed his PhD studies in X-ray crystallography at the University of Glasgow before taking up a position with CSIRO in Melbourne in 1949. There he became expert in the construction and operation of mass spectrometers, mainly for the study of ion physics. In 1967, he became the Foundation Professor Physical Chemistry at the new La Trobe University in Melbourne where he continued his work in mass spectrometry but was also involved in university leadership that included a period as head of a residential college.Together with his students, he developed the use of compact, rapid-scanning quadrupole mass spectrometers, linking them in series to allow secondary studies (including photochemistry) of particular ions, but also taking advantage of the speed of the quadrupoles to link them to gas chromatographs for the study of mixtures of organic compounds. In all of this he was a pioneer in the use of computers with spectroscopic instruments. Internationally he was a recognized expert, speaking at conferences, establishing collaborations, and spending periods of leave at the University of Utah. After his retirement in 1990 he spent a long period as Emeritus Professor before his death in 2013.

Hip-related pain and femoroacetabular impingement syndrome: How common is it? How does it impact on biomechanics? How does it affect muscle function?

Joshua Heerey (La Trobe University, Melbourne) presented at the #SportSuisse2018 his work “What is the prevalence and relationship of bony morphology and features associated with early hip osteoarthritis in sub-elite footballers with and without hip and groin pain”, and won the JOSPT award for the best poster in Bern: congratulations! The aims of this study were to describe the prevalence of bony morphology in football players with and without hip related groin pain, and to determine the association between pain and bony morphology in these athletes (soccer and Australian football players; subelite level; mean age: 26 years old, 80% men; 187 symptomatic and 55 asymptomatic). All subjects underwent specific x-rays exams (supine AP pelvis, Dunn 45°) and filled the International Hip Outcome Tool (IHOT-33). The results showed that in sub-elite football players: /3 of all hips have cam morphology independent of pain (pincer morphology and acetabular dysplasia were rarely seen in this cohort), and that hip related groin pain is not associated with bony morphology. This strengthen again the importance of to use other clinical entities (as described by Per Holmich) and to carefully/critically consider and evaluate the intra-articular pathologies in sub-elite football players with long standing hip and groin pain.

Assessment of the Effect of Different Cementing Materials on the Strength of Cemented Paste Backfill

The extraction and use of mineral resources are critical to modern societies. New technologies and practices have ensured the development of the mining industry. Currently, the industry is striving to become more efficient and more environmentally-friendly. This paper reports on continuing research at La Trobe University on the behaviour of cemented paste obtained from fine, sulphide-rich gold tailings from the local Fosterville Mine. The effects of cementitious binders and the age of the hardened cemented paste on the mechanical properties are presented. The findings to date show that there is potential to replace the current backfill material with cemented paste backfill to increase mine productivity and ore profitability.

Addiction research centres and the nurturing of creativity: The Centre for Alcohol Policy Research (CAPR), Melbourne: a decade on.

Established in 2006, the Centre for Alcohol Policy Research (CAPR) is Australia's only research centre with a primary focus on alcohol policy. CAPR has four main areas of research: alcohol policy impacts; alcohol policy formation and regulatory processes involved in implementing alcohol policies; patterns and trends in drinking and alcohol problems in the population; and the influence of drinking norms, cultural practices and social contexts, particularly in interaction with alcohol policies. In this paper, we give examples of key publications in each area. During the past decade, the number of staff employed at CAPR has increased steadily and now hovers at approximately 10. CAPR has supported the development of independent researchers who collaborate on a number of international projects, such as the Alcohol's Harm to Others study which is now replicated in approximately 30 countries. CAPR receives core funding from the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education, and staff have been highly successful in securing additional competitive research funding. In 2016, CAPR moved to a new institutional setting at La Trobe University and celebrated 10 years of operation.

Monte Finocchito and Heloros Pottery Production: New Evidence through Technological Studies and Material Analysis

AbstractThis paper discusses the use of non-destructive portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) to distinguish sources of variation in 8th Century BC Greek and Sicilian ceramics. The project comprises an element of my PhD study through La Trobe University, concerning Hellenic colonies established from the eighth century BC in the south of Italy, and on Sicily in particular. This specific case study looks at the relationships established between the indigenous site of Monte Finocchito and the Greek settlement of Heloros, both located in south-eastern Sicily. The results demonstrate the usefulness of the pXRF technique for detecting material variations which are not readily apparent using traditional visual analysis during fieldwork.

Carte Blanche on Campus?

This paper explores counterculture and activism in the production of the modern Australian university in the 1960s and 1970s in Australia. In focusing on the building of new suburban university campuses, it interrogates how spatial production was important to the politics of occupation and transformation. Through this examination of campus planning, landscapes and architecture we explore design intentions to the realisation of mid-term consequences in situation, buildings, spaces and form. We unearth alternative historical narratives and understandings of counterculture and activism in two Australian universities: Monash University in Clayton, Victoria and La Trobe University, Bundoora, Victoria. We therefore interrogate here, not the liberating opportunities of the counterculture movement in terms of shifting the way architecture was conceived and produced, but instead the consequences of actions of resistance within the spaces of newly built university campuses, and how this altered the way buildings and landscaped amenities were occupied, used and also developed in subtle and temporary ways.

Perceived stress and well-being in UK and Australian dental hygiene and dental therapy students.

This study aimed to explore United Kingdom (UK) and Australian (Aus) dental hygiene and dental therapy students' (DHDTS) perception of stress and well-being during their undergraduate education. Upon qualification, DHDTS in the UK register as dental therapists (DT), and in Australia, they register as Oral Health Therapists (OHT). A questionnaire was distributed to years 1, 2 and 3 DHDTS at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy (UPDA) in the UK and La Trobe Rural Health School in Australia. The questionnaire consisted of 5 well-used measurement instruments which included the following: Dental Environment Stress questionnaire (DES); Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21); Scales of Psychological Well-Being (SPWB); Valuing Questionnaire (VQ); and the Adult Hope Scale (AHS) to collect data on students' perception of levels of stress and well-being. A response rate of 58% (UK) and 55% (Australia) was achieved. Clinical factors and academic work were perceived as stressful for DHDTS in both the UK and Australia. The Australian DHDTS-perceived stress in the educational environment was significantly higher (P<.002) than the UK DHDTS. The majority of respondents reported levels of depression, anxiety and stress to be within the normal-to-moderate range. All students reported high levels of positive well-being, with no significant differences between the 2 groups. DHDTS in the UK and Australia identified sources of stress within their undergraduate education, but also perceived themselves as positively functioning individuals.

Addressing cultural diversity: the hepatitis B clinical specialist perspective

ABSTRACTObjectives: Hepatitis B is a viral infection primarily affecting people from culturally diverse communities in Australia. While vaccination prevents infection, there is increasing mortality resulting from liver damage associated with chronic infection. Deficits in the national policy and clinical response to hepatitis B result in a low diagnosis rate, inadequate testing and diagnosis processes, and poor access to hepatitis B treatment services. While research identifies inadequate hepatitis B knowledge among people with the virus and primary health care workers, this project sought to identify how specialist clinicians in Australia negotiate cultural diversity, and provide often complex clinical information to people with hepatitis B.Design: A vignette was developed and presented to thirteen viral hepatitis specialist clinicians prior to an electronically recorded interview. Recruitment continued until saturation of themes was reached. Data were thematically coded into themes outlined in the interview schedule. Ethical approval for the research was provided by the La Trobe University Human Research Ethics Committee.Results: Key messages provided to patients with hepatitis B by clinical specialists were identified. These messages were not consistently provided to all patients with hepatitis B, but were determined on perceptions of patient knowledge, age and highest educational level. While the vignette stated that English was not an issue for the patient, most specialists identified the need for an interpreter. Combating stigma related to hepatitis B was seen as important by the specialists and this was done through normalising the virus. Having an awareness of different cultural understandings about hepatitis B specifically, and health and well-being generally, was noted as a communication strategy.Conclusion: Key core competencies need to be developed to deliver educational messages to people with hepatitis B within clinical encounters. The provision of adequate resources to specialist clinics will assist in addressing gaps in the clinical response to hepatitis B.
