Ionospheric Correction of L-Band SAR Offset Measurements for the Precise Observation of Glacier Velocity Variations on Novaya Zemlya

The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) offset tracking method has been widely used for multitemporal analysis of fast glacier movements in the polar region. However, it can be severely distorted, particularly in the case of L-band SAR systems mainly due to a frequent occurrence of ionospheric effects in the polar region. In this study, we developed an efficient method to extract and correct the ionospheric contribution from SAR offset tracking measurements. The method exploits an iterative directional filtering approach, which is based on the pattern and directionality of ionospheric streaks. The measurement performance of the proposed method was evaluated by using three L-band advanced land observing satellite phased array type L-band synthetic aperture radar pairs. Our results showed that the proposed correction achieved the improved measurement accuracies from 4.68–23.88 to 1.03–1.51 m/yr. It means that the accuracies of corrected measurements were about 5–16 times better than those of the original measurements. From the results, we concluded that our correction technique is highly suitable for the precise measurement of the glacier displacements even in the presence of strong ionospheric effects. Using the proposed method, the variations of glacier velocities were measured in the Vylki, Shury, and Kropotnika glaciers on Novaya Zemlya, which is located in the Russian Arctic Ocean, and the grounding zones were detected from the measurements in the Shury and Kropotnika glaciers. It further confirmed that the proposed correction method is allowed for the precise monitoring of glacier movements. However, in cases of severe ionosphere-distorted measurements, the proposed method may be limitedly applied.

A Modified Nonlinear Chirp Scaling Algorithm for Spaceborne/Stationary Bistatic SAR Based on Series Reversion

This paper proposes a method of focusing the bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) (BiSAR) data in spaceborne/stationary configuration. The key problem for imaging is the space variance of Doppler phase. The stationary platform induces additional and different range offsets to the range migration of targets. It causes targets with the same Doppler history, which are determined only by the moving platform, to shift into different bistatic range cells in the echo data. Therefore, the processing is not the same as monostatic SAR imaging which can be fast performed by the uniform matched-filter function in the frequency domain. In this paper, a modified nonlinear chirp scaling (NLCS) algorithm based on series reversion is formulated, which could achieve different range cell migration correction and the equalization of effective range and azimuth frequency modulation rates. The proposed algorithm is validated by simulated and real BiSAR data. In the spaceborne/stationary BiSAR experiment, the YaoGan-1 (an L-band spaceborne SAR system launched by China) is selected as the transmitter, and the stationary receiver is mounted on top of a tall building. The results show that modified NLCS algorithm can effectively focus BiSAR data with serious space variance in spaceborne/stationary configuration.

Focusing of Medium-Earth-Orbit SAR With Advanced Nonlinear Chirp Scaling Algorithm

The signal processing of the medium-Earth-orbit synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is more challenging than that of the current low-Earth-orbit SAR because the imaging geometry is more complicated, and the range and azimuth variances are more severe. This paper deals with these imaging problems in three aspects. First, an advanced hyperbolic range equation (AHRE) is proposed for the first time, which is more precise for a spaceborne SAR than the conventional hyperbolic range equation (CHRE). Second, the point target spectrum based on the AHRE is analytically derived, which is useful for developing efficient SAR processing algorithms. Third, the well-known nonlinear chirp scaling (NLCS) algorithm is modified according to this new spectrum, and the so-called AHRE-based advanced NLCS (A-NLCS) algorithm is established. The simulation results validate the correctness of our method for L-band SAR systems at altitudes from 1000 to 10 000 km with an azimuth resolution around 3 m. It is also shown that the A-NLCS algorithm has better performance than the CHRE-based algorithms in longer integration time cases. Therefore, we recommend the A-NLCS algorithm for a spaceborne SAR with a lower frequency, finer resolution, and higher satellite altitude.

Study of Hypersaline Deposits and Analysis of Their Signature in Airborne and Spaceborne SAR Data: Example of Death Valley, California

Field measurements of dielectric properties of hypersaline deposits were realized over an arid site located in Death Valley, CA. The dielectric constant of salt and water mixtures is usually high but can show large variations, depending on the considered salt. We confirmed values observed on the field with laboratory measurements and used these results to model both the amplitude and phase behaviors of the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) signal at C- and L-bands. Our analytical simulations allow reproducing specific copolar signatures observed in both Airborne SAR (AIRSAR) and Spaceborne Imaging Radar (SIR-C) data, corresponding to the saltpan of the Cottonball Basin. More precisely, the main objective of the present paper is to understand the influence of soil salinity as a function of soil moisture on the dielectric constant of soils and then on the backscattering coefficients recorded by airborne and spaceborne SAR systems. We also propose the copolarized backscattering ratio and phase difference as indicators of moistened and salt-affected soils. More precisely, we show that these copolar indicators should allow monitoring of the seasonal variations of the dielectric properties of saline deposits at both C- and L-bands. Because of the frequency dependence of the ionic conductivity, we also show that L-band SAR systems should be efficient tools for detecting both soil moisture and salinity, while C-band SAR systems are more suitable for the monitoring of soil moisture only. Through the study of terrestrial evaporitic environments by means of spaceborne SAR systems, our results could also be of great interest for defining future planetary missions, particularly for the exploration of Mars.

The Potential of Low-Frequency SAR Systems for Mapping Ionospheric TEC Distributions

Ionospheric propagation effects have a significant impact on the signal properties of low-frequency synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. Range delay, interferometric phase bias, range defocusing, and Faraday rotation are the most prominent ones. All the effects are a function of the so-called total electron content (TEC). Methods based on two-frequency global positioning system observations allow measuring TEC in the ionosphere with coarse spatial resolution only. In this letter, the potential of broadband L-band SAR systems for ionospheric TEC mapping is studied. As a basis, the dispersive nature of the ionosphere and its effects on broadband microwave radiation are theoretically derived and analyzed. It is shown that phase advance and group delay can be measured by interferometric and correlation techniques, respectively. The achievable accuracy suffices in mapping small-scale ionospheric TEC disturbances. A differential TEC estimator that separates ionospheric from tropospheric contributions is proposed

An application of L-band synthetic aperture radar to tide height measurement

A method for measuring the tide height near the coast from L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is presented. Twenty-one coherent interferograms have been successfully constructed from Japanese Earth Resources Satellite 1 (JERS-1) SAR data obtained over oyster sea-farming structures. A coherence analysis of the 21 interferometric pairs showed that a perpendicular baseline of less than 3 km, with a temporal baseline within 500 days, are required to obtain a coherent pair, with a coherence higher than 0.25, in the study area. The coherent phases preserved in the interferograms showed a close relation with the sea level. The problem of phase unwrapping to restore an absolute tide height was overcome by introducing normalized image intensities. The radar measurements estimated by the proposed method were verified using tide gauge data, and comparison of the two datasets yielded a correlation coefficient R/sup 2/ of 0.91, with a root mean square error of 5.76 cm. The results demonstrate that radar interferometry can be applied for a tide height measurement near the coast given sufficient structures that return off-nadir radar pulses to the antenna. The multipolarized L-band SAR system will provide better results, using only double-bounced signals, in the future.
