Metal-Ligand Covalency in the Valence Excited States of Metal Dithiolenes Revealed by S 1s3p Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering.

Metallo dithiolene complexes with biological and catalytic relevance are well-known for having strong metal-ligand covalency, which dictates their valence electronic structures. We present the resonant sulfur Kβ (1s3p) X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) for a series of Ni and Cu bis(dithiolene) complexes to reveal the ligand sulfur contributions to both the occupied and unoccupied valence orbitals. While S K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy played a critical role in identifying the covalency of the unoccupied orbitals of metal dithiolenes, the present focus on XES explores the occupied density of states. For a series of [Cu(mnt)2]n- and [Ni(mnt)2]n- anions and dianions, a comparison of the nonresonant and resonant S Kβ XES spectra highlights the dramatic improvement in spectral resolution and corresponding ability to differentiate subtle changes in occupied electronic structure across the series. Furthermore, the use of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) probes the valence excited states and the core-valence couplings of the complexes. By employing a theoretical approach based on time-dependent density functional theory to interpret the RIXS spectra, we reveal how metal-ligand covalency influences the excited state energies and covalencies. We identify the low energy excited states as having the same symmetry as the nominal "ligand field" or "d-d" states that typically dominate the photophysics of 3d metal complexes but with significant metal-ligand charge transfer character dictated by their covalency. These results suggest that strong metal-ligand covalency can be used to influence the charge-transfer photochemistry of first row transition metal complexes.

Disentangling the ligand and electronic structure in KVPO4F1-xOx positive electrode materials by valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopy

Understanding the intricate crystal structure of polyanionic positive electrode materials is essential for elucidating the mechanisms involved during cycling and predicting the working potential of the electrode. To achieve this goal, a clear comprehension of how the coordination environment of the transition metal ion influences the ionicity/covalency of the metal-ligand bonds is necessary. Yet, discriminating these ligands poses challenges due to the limited sensitivity to light elements of common characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. To address this issue, we employed valence-to-core Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy combined with ab initio modelling and conducted a systematic investigation using potassium vanadium oxyfluoride phosphate compounds with the general formula KVPO4F1-xOx (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1). Our approach allows distinguishing the contributions of VF, VO, and VO bonds at the Kβ" region, with intensities highly correlated to the F− and O2− anion composition. Additionally, the evolution of the features at the Kβ2,5 region is highly correlated to the presence of short VO bonds, strongly influencing the electrode potential of the material. Density of state (DOS) analysis based on ab initio modelling of the end member compounds KVPO4F and KVOPO4 further supports the existence of VF and VO bonding through the mixing of F/O p-DOS with V d-DOS. Overall, we present a detailed and reliable approach for understanding the occupied electronic states of the bulk material, proving valuable for a thorough comprehension of the structure of positive electrode materials in batteries.

Iron Kβ X-ray Emission Spectroscopy: The Origin of Spectral Features from Atomic to Molecular Systems Using Multi-configurational Calculations.

Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) is widely used to fingerprint the local spin of transition-metal ions, including in pump-probe experiments, to identify excited states or in chemical and biological reactions to characterize short-lived intermediates. In this study, the spectra of ferrous and ferric complexes for various spin states were measured experimentally and described theoretically through restricted active space (RAS) calculations including dynamic correlations. Through the RAS calculations from simple atomic models to complex molecular systems, spectral effects such as the exchange interactions, crystal-field strength, and covalent orbital mixing were evaluated and discussed. The calculations find that only the spectral features of low-spin cases show a dependence on the crystal-field strength, particularly for ferrous low spin. The effect of the covalent orbital mixing strength on the first moment of the Kβ1,3 main line and the Kβ1,3-Kβ' energy splitting is quantitatively described. Clear relationships are found within a given nominal spin but less between different spin states, which calls for careful selection of reference spectra in future experiments. This study further advances our understanding of the correlation between changes in experimental spectral features and their corresponding electronic structure information.

Probing the Effect of Environments on the Stability of Ni2P Nanoparticle Electrocatalysts

Ni2P has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), making it a promising replacement for Pt which is the current state of the art HER catalyst.1,2 H2 is a clean-energy critical fuel and chemical highlighted by the US Department of Energy’s “Hydrogen Shot,” which seeks to reduce “the cost of carbon-neutral hydrogen by 80% to $1 per 1 kg in 1 decade, highlighting the key role of hydrogen in implementing carbon-neutral solutions.”3 Ni2P is also a good or promising catalyst for other reactions, such as alcohol oxidation, hydrodesulfurization,4,5 nitrate reduction, and oxygen evolution reaction.6 However, Ni2P and other TMPs are susceptible to oxidation, which can lead to catalyst degradation and loss in certain conditions.7,8 Stability is an important part of catalysis, especially for achieving the goals of the Hydrogen Shot. Therefore, it is important to understand complex degradation mechanisms in order to better understand structure-activity relationships in these materials. In the present work, in situ Ni K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and ex situ P Kα and Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) couple together to understand the degradation of Ni2P and show the effects of electrolyte pH, ligands, and air on Ni2P nanoparticles.5 nm Ni2P nanoparticles were synthesized by heating NiCl2 and tris(diethylamino)phosphine in oleylamine. The nanoparticles were drop cast onto carbon fiber paper electrodes and Si wafers or Au-coated wafers for P Kα and Kβ XES. Oleylamine ligands are removed by thermal annealing. Electrochemical experiments were conducted with a three-electrode cell using carbon fiber paper or Au-coated wafers deposited with Ni2P nanoparticles as working electrode, Ag/AgCl calibrated to the H2 redox couple as reference electrode, and graphite rod as counter electrode. P Kα and Kβ XES experiments were conducted inside a N2 glovebox to prevent unintentional air oxidation. Transmission-mode Ni K-edge XAS was conducted on a benchtop spectrometer.Upon exposure to air, as-synthesized Ni2P nanoparticles were studied via P Kα and Kβ XES. Results showed that the phosphide species converted to phosphate with analysis of intermediates well fit by a simple two-phase mixture. Phosphide:phosphate ratios were quantified using linear combination analysis, providing a powerful tool to analyze P speciation on various samples in an inert environment and with minimal loss of material, both advantages of this system over 31P magic angle spinning solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Continued work looks at analyzing the effects of the ligand environment on the stability of nanoparticles in electrolytes spanning from acidic to basic pH. We hypothesize that ligands will significantly stabilize the nanoparticles against corrosion and that without ligands Ni2P readily converts to a nickel phosphate species upon exposure to electrolyte.References(1) Popczun, E. Kβ X-ray Emission Spectroscopy of Cu(I)-Lytic Polysaccharide Monooxygenase: Direct Observation of the Frontier Molecular Orbital for H2O2 Activation.

Lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) catalyze the degradation of recalcitrant carbohydrate polysaccharide substrates. These enzymes are characterized by a mononuclear Cu(I) active site with a three-coordinate T-shaped "His-brace" configuration including the N-terminal histidine and its amine group as ligands. This study explicitly investigates the electronic structure of the d10 Cu(I) active site in a LPMO using Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES). The lack of inversion symmetry in the His-brace site enables the 3d/p mixing required for intensity in the Kβ valence-to-core (VtC) XES spectrum of Cu(I)-LPMO. These Kβ XES data are correlated to density functional theory (DFT) calculations to define the bonding, and in particular, the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) of the Cu(I) site. These experimentally validated DFT calculations are used to evaluate the reaction coordinate for homolytic cleavage of the H2O2 O-O bond and understand the contribution of this FMO to the low barrier of this reaction and how the geometric and electronic structure of the Cu(I)-LPMO site is activated for rapid reactivity with H2O2.

Sulfur X-ray Absorption and Emission Spectroscopy of Organic Sulfones

The sulfones are a widespread group of organo-sulfur compounds, which contain the sulfonyl SO2 group attached to two carbons and have a formal sulfur oxidation state of +2. We have examined the sulfur K near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of a range of different sulfones and find substantial spectroscopic variability depending upon the nature of the coordination to the sulfonyl group. We have also examined the sulfur Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) of selected representative sulfones. Density functional theory simulations show satisfactory reproduction of both absorption and emission spectra while enabling assignment of the various transitions comprising the spectra. The correspondence between observed and simulated spectra shows promise for ab initio prediction of sulfur X-ray absorption and emission spectra of sulfones of any substituent. The absorption spectra and, to a lesser extent, the emission spectra are sensitive to the nature of the organic groups bound to the sulfonyl (SO2) moiety, clearly showing the potential of X-ray spectroscopy as an in situ probe of sulfone chemistry.

Lab-Scale X-Ray Emission/Absorption Spectroscopy for Operando Measurement of Electronic Structure of Transition Metals in Battery Electrodes

Tracking the change in electronic structure of target elements is crucial to investigate the nature of redox reactions occurring in battery electrodes. X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) perform this role well with high sensitivity and throughput, but the requisite of synchrotron facilities often limits those availability for material characterization.Using a lab-scale x-ray emission/absorption spectrometer, we investigated the changes in the local structure and chemistry around the 3d transition metal elements of LiMO2 cathodes for Li-ion batteries as a function of the battery state of charge (SoC). Ex situ measurement was prepared from the electrode samples with discrete difference in SoC. Coupled with ex situ measurement, operando measurement was performed using pouch cells with LiMO2 cathode, which enabled a real-time monitoring of chemical shift in an element-specific manner resulted from changing electrode potential.Through the XES mode of the bench-top spectrometer, fluorescence emissions from the LiMO2 cathode, or the cell containing it, was monochromatized by a spherically bent crystal analyzer (SBCA). The Kβ emissions of 3d transition metal elements such as cobalt display position/shape difference of spectrum with varying SoC. The trend of chemical shift and change in spectral features provided the information on the electronic structure variation, such as oxidation state change of 3d transition metals in LiMO2 during charge and discharge (i.e., delithiation and lithiation). Furthermore, valence-to-core (VtC) emission signals helped enable in-depth analysis such as spin structure characterization.In addition to the XES analysis, we could measure K-edge XAFS for the same 3d transition metals in LiMO2 as well. In the XAFS mode of the spectrometer, SBCA monochromatized bremsstrahlung x-ray generated from a high-power x-ray tube is used to make an incident source energy-dispersive. While Kβ XES probed occupied levels, K-edge XAFS examined unoccupied levels providing comprehensive understanding on the change in electronic structure of 3d transition metals in LiMO2. Figure 1

Impact of Solvent-Solute Hydrogen Bonding on Ultrafast Electron Transfer in a Trimetallic Iron-Ruthenium Complex

Transition metal complexes (TMCs) are widely used as light absorbers and catalysts for photochemical energy conversion processes such as photocatalytic reactions in liquid environments. Of particular interest are TMCs which incorporate multiple bridged metal centres because they represent a step towards more complex supramolecular assemblies that can ultimately enable control of the charge flow in solution-based photo-redox processes. However, the development of design guidelines for such molecular assemblies is impeded by an incomplete understanding of the coupling between their electronic and nuclear dynamics, including the interplay of TMCs with their liquid environment upon photoexcitation. Probing the involved processes requires high spatial sensitivity towards electronic motion and the ability to capture atomic motion on ultrafast timescales – a combination which is not readily available for optical transient spectroscopic techniques.X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) have revolutionized the field of ultrafast science in recent years. XFELs generate tuneable and extremely bright X-ray pulses with a typical pulse duration of <30 fs, which are well-suited as an element-specific probe of ultrafast electronic and atomic motion in molecules and materials.1,2 Applied to TMCs, XFEL probes are sensitive to the local electronic structure in such molecular systems as well as to intra- and inter-molecular structural reorganization at an atomic level.3 In this talk, I will present work on the interaction of a linear trimetallic cyanide-bridged iron-ruthenium complex (FeRuFe) with its solvent environment, carried out using the LCLS XFEL facility at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The focus of this study lies on elucidating how photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer processes in FeRuFe are affected by hydrogen bonding interactions between its cyanide ligands and the surrounding solvent molecules. In water, such solvent-solute hydrogen bonding interactions are stronger for Fe(II) than Fe(III), leading to substantial changes in solute-solvent interactions upon photoinduced electron transfer between metal centres.The experiment is performed in a pump-probe geometry on a liquid jet, where a visible/near-infrared pump induces a metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) between Ru and Fe which is followed by an ultrafast back-electron transfer (BET). The excited state dynamics are monitored using hard X-ray pulses as a function of time delay between the laser pump and the X-ray probe pulses. To resolve and correlate electronic and structural dynamics upon MMCT excitation, we simultaneously perform ultrafast Fe Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and X-ray solution scattering (XSS) measurements, where XES is sensitive to the oxidation and spin state of the Fe centres and XSS provides information on atomic motion in solute and solvent, as demonstrated in previous work on a similar system.4 To evaluate the effect of solute-solvent hydrogen bonding interactions on the electron transfer dynamics, we perform measurements in a series of solvents with different hydrogen bonding properties, including water, methanol, and acetonitrile. We find that the BET increases as a function of decreasing hydrogen bonding ability of the solvent, and that distinct signatures of solvation dynamics are present in the scattering data. The resulting molecular level understanding of solvent reorganization coupled to electron transfer demonstrates that the strength and type of solute-solvent interactions are a central factor in determining the outcome of photoinduced charge transfer processes in TMCs.References Bergmann, U. et al. Determination of the iron(IV) local spin states of the Q intermediate of soluble methane monooxygenase by Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy

Soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) facilitates the conversion of methane to methanol at a non-heme FeIV2 intermediate MMOHQ, which is formed in the active site of the sMMO hydroxylase component (MMOH) during the catalytic cycle. Other biological systems also employ high-valent FeIV sites in catalysis; however, MMOHQ is unique as Nature’s only identified FeIV2 intermediate. Previous 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopic studies have shown that MMOHQ employs antiferromagnetic coupling of the two FeIV sites to yield a diamagnetic cluster. Unfortunately, this lack of net spin prevents the determination of the local spin state (Sloc) of each of the irons by most spectroscopic techniques. Here, we use Fe Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) to characterize the local spin states of the key intermediates of the sMMO catalytic cycle, including MMOHQ trapped by rapid-freeze-quench techniques. A pure XES spectrum of MMOHQ is obtained by subtraction of the contributions from other reaction cycle intermediates with the aid of Mössbauer quantification. Comparisons of the MMOHQ spectrum with those of known Sloc = 1 and Sloc = 2 FeIV sites in chemical and biological models reveal that MMOHQ possesses Sloc = 2 iron sites. This experimental determination of the local spin state will help guide future computational and mechanistic studies of sMMO catalysis.Graphical abstract

Universal stripe order as a precursor of the superconducting phase in pressurized BaFe2Se3 Spin Ladder

It has been recently observed that a superconducting phase emerges under pressure in the Fe-based spin-ladders BaFe2X3 (X = S, Se). The low dimensionality of the Fe spin-ladders, which simplifies the elaboration of theoretical models, should help to understand the mechanism of superconductivity. We investigate here the frontier between magnetic and superconducting (SC) phases in BaFe2Se3 by performing challenging powder neutron diffraction (PND) and Fe Kβ x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) under high pressure. We show that the ambient pressure ground state with a block-like magnetic order is destabilized under pressure. A pressure-induced antiferromagnetic stripe-like spin order, similar to the magnetic order of the parent superconductor BaFe2S3, is observed above 3-4 GPa. Our discovery shows that the stripe magnetic order is a key phase close to the SC dome and its particular magnetic fluctuations could be involved in the stabilization of superconductivity in Fe-based spin ladders.

Local Coordination and Electronic Structure Ramifications of Guest-Dependent Spin Crossover in a Metal-Organic Framework: A Combined X-ray Absorption and Emission Spectroscopy Study.

The porous Hoffman-type 3D lattice Fe(pz)[NiII(CN)4] exhibits thermally induced spin-crossover (SCO) behavior that is dependent on the solvent guest species occupying the pores. Here, in situ Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and both non-resonant and resonant Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) methods are used to probe this framework under two solvent environments that yield different extremes of spin crossover temperature: acetonitrile and toluene. While the acetonitrile pore environment engenders an SCO response around room temperature, toluene guests stabilize the high spin state and effectively suppress SCO behavior throughout the ambient temperature range. The multipronged X-ray spectroscopy approach simultaneously confirmed this spin crossover behavior and provided new local coordination and electronic structural insights of the framework under these two solvent environments. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis revealed spin state and solvent guest-dependent differences in coordination bond lengths and structural disorder. Resonant XES measurements produced high-resolution XAS spectra with distinct pre-edge and edge features, whose assignment was established using both simple ligand field theory and time-dependent density-functional theory calculations and further supported by their observed resonance behavior in the 2D RXES plane. Edge feature variation with the Fe spin state was interpreted to reveal changes in specific metal-linker bond covalency.

Selenium Valence-to-Core X-ray Emission Spectroscopy and Kβ HERFD X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy as Complementary Probes of Chemical and Electronic Structure.

Selenium X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has found widespread use in investigations of Se-containing materials, geochemical processes, and biologically active sites. In contrast to sulfur Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), which has been found to contain electronic and structural information complementary to S XAS, Se Kβ XES remains comparatively underexplored. Herein, we present the first Se Valence-to-Core (VtC) XES studies of reduced Se-containing compounds and FeSe dimers. Se VtC XES is found to be sensitive to changes in covalent Se bonding interactions (Se–Se/Se–C/Se–H bonding) while being relatively insensitive to changes in Fe oxidation states as selenide bridges in FeSe dimers ([Fe2Se2]2+ vs [Fe2Se2]+). In contrast, Se Kβ HERFD XAS is demonstrated to be quite sensitive to changes in the Fe oxidation state with Se Kβ HERFD XAS demonstrating experimental resolution equivalent to Kα HERFD XAS. Additionally, computational studies reveal both Se VtC XES and XAS to be sensitive to selenium protonation in FeSe complexes.

Iron redox analysis of silicate-based minerals and glasses using synchrotron X-ray absorption and laboratory X-ray emission spectroscopy

There is considerable need for robust, accessible, and non-destructive Fe redox analysis methods for silicate-based minerals and glasses. A popular method assigns the distribution of Fe2+ and Fe3+ atoms using pre-edge features in the Fe K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). We expand on this work in two ways. First, we use XANES to assign the Fe redox distribution in four silicate materials: two geological reference materials and two industrial glasses. This example highlights the effect of the Fe atomic environment on pre-edge features’ intensities and stresses the need for specifically developed calibration curves. We then investigate Fe Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy as an independent complement for redox assignments. Here, the silicates do not show a systematic dependence on oxidation state. This is explored with electronic structure calculations, which support previous claims that the lack of sensitivity is due to charge transfers following creation of the 1s core hole.

Effects of x-ray free-electron laser pulse intensity on the Mn K β 1,3 x-ray emission spectrum in photosystem II-A case study for metalloprotein crystals and solutions.

In the last ten years, x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) have been successfully employed to characterize metalloproteins at room temperature using various techniques including x-ray diffraction, scattering, and spectroscopy. The approach has been to outrun the radiation damage by using femtosecond (fs) x-ray pulses. An example of an important and damage sensitive active metal center is the Mn4CaO5 cluster in photosystem II (PS II), the catalytic site of photosynthetic water oxidation. The combination of serial femtosecond x-ray crystallography and Kβ x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) has proven to be a powerful multimodal approach for simultaneously probing the overall protein structure and the electronic state of the Mn4CaO5 cluster throughout the catalytic (Kok) cycle. As the observed spectral changes in the Mn4CaO5 cluster are very subtle, it is critical to consider the potential effects of the intense XFEL pulses on the Kβ XES signal. We report here a systematic study of the effects of XFEL peak power, beam focus, and dose on the Mn Kβ1,3 XES spectra in PS II over a wide range of pulse parameters collected over seven different experimental runs using both microcrystal and solution PS II samples. Our findings show that for beam intensities ranging from ∼5 × 1015 to 5 × 1017 W/cm2 at a pulse length of ∼35 fs, the spectral effects are small compared to those observed between S-states in the Kok cycle. Our results provide a benchmark for other XFEL-based XES studies on metalloproteins, confirming the viability of this approach.

Pressure-induced spin crossover in a Fe78Si9B13 metallic glass

The pressure effect on structures and properties of a Fe78Si9B13 metallic glass was investigated by in situ high-pressure synchrotron Fe Kβ x-ray emission spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction, and electrical resistivity measurements up to ∼51 GPa. The study reveals a reversible and continuous pressure-induced high- to low-spin crossover of Fe atoms in an amorphous structure. The changes of the local spin moment can be scaled to match its average atomic distance shrinkage very well during compression. The crossover of electronic spin states in the Fe78Si9B13 metallic glass resembles that of typical crystalline Fe-bearing materials but without a sharp atomic volume collapse and an abrupt electrical resistivity jump. These findings could help guide applications of Fe-based metallic glasses as a soft ferromagnetic material at extreme conditions and also improve our understanding of magnetism and coupling of its changes with disordered atomic structures and other properties in metallic glasses.

By combining Kβ XES with resonant excitation in the XAS pre‐edge region, resonant Kβ XES (or 1s3p RXES) data are obtained, which probe the 3dn+1 final‐state configuration. Comparison of the non‐resonant and resonant XES for a series of high‐spin ferrous and ferric complexes shows that oxidation state assignments that were previously unclear are now easily made. The present study spans iron tetrachlorides, iron sulfur clusters, and the MoFe protein of nitrogenase. While 1s3p RXES studies have previously been reported, to our knowledge, 1s3p RXES has not been previously utilized to resolve questions of metal valency in highly covalent systems. As such, the approach presented herein provides chemists with means to more rigorously and quantitatively address challenging electronic‐structure questions.

Sulfur Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy: comparison with sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy for speciation of organosulfur compounds.

Until recently, sulfur was known as a "spectroscopically silent" element because of a paucity of convenient spectroscopic probes suitable for in situ chemical speciation. In recent years the technique of sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has been used extensively in sulfur speciation in a variety of different fields. With an initial focus on reduced forms of organic sulfur, we have explored a complementary X-ray based spectroscopy - sulfur Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) - as a potential analytical tool for sulfur speciation in complex samples. We compare and contrast the sensitivity of sulfur Kβ XES with that of sulfur K-edge XAS, and find differing sensitivities for the two techniques. In some cases an approach involving both sulfur K-edge XAS and sulfur Kβ XES may be a powerful combination for deducing sulfur speciation in samples containing complex mixtures.

Kβ X-ray Emission Spectroscopy as a Probe of Cu(I) Sites: Application to the Cu(I) Site in Preprocessed Galactose Oxidase.

Cu(I) active sites in metalloproteins are involved in O2 activation, but their O2 reactivity is difficult to study due to the Cu(I) d10 closed shell which precludes the use of conventional spectroscopic methods. Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) is a promising technique for investigating Cu(I) sites as it detects photons emitted by electronic transitions from occupied orbitals. Here, we demonstrate the utility of Kβ XES in probing Cu(I) sites in model complexes and a metalloprotein. Using Cu(I)Cl, emission features from double-ionization (DI) states are identified using varying incident X-ray photon energies, and a reasonable method to correct the data to remove DI contributions is presented. Kβ XES spectra of Cu(I) model complexes, having biologically relevant N/S ligands and different coordination numbers, are compared and analyzed, with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, to evaluate the sensitivity of the spectral features to the ligand environment. While the low-energy Kβ2,5 emission feature reflects the ionization energy of ligand np valence orbitals, the high-energy Kβ2,5 emission feature corresponds to transitions from molecular orbitals (MOs) having mainly Cu 3d character with the intensities determined by ligand-mediated d-p mixing. A Kβ XES spectrum of the Cu(I) site in preprocessed galactose oxidase (GOpre) supports the 1Tyr/2His structural model that was determined by our previous X-ray absorption spectroscopy and DFT study. The high-energy Kβ2,5 emission feature in the Cu(I)-GOpre data has information about the MO containing mostly Cu 3dx2-y2 character that is the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) for O2 activation, which shows the potential of Kβ XES in probing the Cu(I) FMO associated with small-molecule activation in metalloproteins.
