The vibrational symmetry and selection rules for an ethane-type molecule are re-examined. It is demonstrated that the kinetic and potential energy matrices can be fully reduced under either D3h or D3d. However, the dipole moment and polarizability tensors do not, in general, show quite as much symmetry, so that certain infrared and Raman coincidences, forbidden by D3d selection rules, become allowed.
