Initial Study of Adaptive Threshold Cycle Slip Detection on BDS/GPS Kinematic Precise Point Positioning during Geomagnetic Storms

Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) provides users with all-weather, continuous, high-precision positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services. In the operation and use of GNSS, the influence of the space environment is a factor that must be considered. For example, during geomagnetic storms, a series of changes in the Earth’s magnetosphere, ionosphere, and upper atmosphere affect GNSS’s positioning performance. To investigate the positioning performance of global satellite navigation systems during geomagnetic storms, this study selected three geomagnetic storm events that occurred from September to December 2023. Utilizing the global positioning system (GPS)/Beidou navigation satellite system (BDS) dual-system, kinematic precise point positioning (PPP) experiments were conducted, and the raw observational data from 100 stations worldwide was analyzed. The experimental results show that the positioning accuracy of some stations in high-latitude areas decreases significantly when using the conventional Geometry Free (GF) cycle-slip detection threshold during geomagnetic storms, which means that the GF is no longer applicable to high-precision positioning services. Meanwhile, there is no significant change in the satellite signal strengths received at the stations during the period of the decrease in positioning accuracy. Analyzing the cycle-slip rates for stations where abnormal accuracy occurred, it was observed that stations experiencing a significant decline in positioning accuracy exhibited serious cycle-slip misjudgments. To improve the kinematic PPP accuracy during magnetic storms, this paper proposes an adaptive threshold for cycle-slip detection and designs five experimental strategies. After using the GF adaptive threshold, the station positioning accuracy improved significantly. It achieved the accuracy level of the quiet period, while the cycle-slip incidence reached the average level. During magnetic storms, the ionosphere changes rapidly, and the use of the traditional GF constant threshold will cause serious cycle-slip misjudgments, which makes the dynamic accuracy in high latitude areas and some mid-latitude areas uncommon, while the use of the GF adaptive threshold can alleviate this phenomenon and improve the positioning accuracy in the high-latitude regions and some of the affected mid-latitude areas during the magnetic storms.

Real-Time Estimation of BDS-3 Satellite Clock Offset with Ambiguity Resolution Using B1C/B2a Signals

The third generation of the BeiDou navigation satellite system (BDS-3) can transmit five-frequency signals. The real-time satellite clock offset of BDS-3 is typically generated utilizing the B1I/B3I combination with the ambiguity-float solutions. By conducting the ambiguity resolution (AR), the reliability of the satellite clock offset can be improved. However, the performance of BDS-3 ambiguity-fixed real-time satellite clock offset with B1C/B2a signals remains unknown and unrevealed. In this contribution, the performance of the BDS-3 ambiguity-fixed satellite clock offset with the new B1C/B2a signals is investigated. One week of observation data from 85 stations was used to perform ambiguity-fixed satellite clock offset estimation. For B1I/B3I and B1C/B2a signals, the wide-lane (WL) uncalibrated phase delay (UPD) on the satellite end is fairly stable for one day, while the narrow-lane (NL) UPD standard deviation (STD) amounts to 0.122 and 0.081 cycles, respectively. The mean ambiguity fixing rate is 80.7% and 78.0% for these two signal combinations, and the time to first fix (TTFF) for the B1C/B2a signals is remarkably shorter than that of the B1I/B3I signals. The STDs of the ambiguity-float and -fixed satellite clock offsets are 0.033 and 0.026 ns, respectively, for the B1I/B3I combination, and it is reduced to 0.024 and 0.023 ns for B1C/B2a signals, respectively. Using the estimated UPD and clock offset products, the positioning performance of the kinematic Precise Point Positioning (PPP)-AR results amounts to 1.56, 1.23, and 4.46 cm in the east, north, and up directions for B1I/B3I signals, respectively. It is improved to 1.36, 1.16, and 4.25 cm using the products estimated with the B1C/B2a signals, with improvements of 12.8%, 5.7%, and 4.7% in three directions, respectively. The experiments showed that the performances of the ambiguity-fixed satellite clock offsets and the PPP-AR results using B1C/B2a signals are better than those of B1I/B3I.

Orbit and clock products for quad-system satellites with undifferenced ambiguity fixing approach

Integer Ambiguity Resolution (IAR) can significantly improve the accuracy of GNSS Precise Orbit Determination (POD). Traditionally, the IAR in POD is achieved at the Double Differenced (DD) level. In this contribution, we develop an Un-Differenced (UD) IAR method for Global Positioning System (GPS)+ BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) + Galileo navigation satellite system (Galileo)+ Global'naya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) quad-system POD by calibrating UD ambiguities in the raw carrier phase and generating the so-called carrier range. Based on this method, we generate the UD ambiguity-fixed orbit and clock products for the Wuhan Innovation Application Center (IAC) of the International GNSS Monitoring and Assessment System (iGMAS). One-year observations in 2020 from 150 stations are employed to investigate performance of orbit and clock products. Notably, the UD Ambiguity Resolution (AR) yields more resolved integer ambiguities than the traditional DD AR, scaling up to 9%, attributable to its avoidance of station baseline formation. Benefiting from the removal of ambiguity parameters, the computational efficiency of parameter estimation undergoes a substantial 70% improvement. Compared with the float solution, the orbit consistencies of UD AR solution achieve the accuracy of 1.9, 5.2, 2.8, 2.1, and 2.7 cm for GPS, BeiDou-2 Navigation Satellite System (BDS-2), BeiDou-3 Navigation Satellite System (BDS-3), Galileo, and GLONASS satellites respectively, reflecting enhancements of 40%, 24%, 54%, 34%, and 42%. Moreover, the standard deviations of Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) residuals are spanning 2.5–3.5 cm, underscoring a comparable accuracy to the DD AR solution, with discrepancies below 5%. A notable advantage of UD AR lies in its capability to produce the Integer Recovered Clock (IRC), facilitating Precise Point Positioning (PPP) AR without requiring additional Uncalibrated Phase Delay (UPD) products. To assess the performance of quad-system kinematic PPP based on IRC, a network comprising 120 stations is utilized. In comparison to the float solution, the IRC-based PPP AR accelerates convergence time by 31% and enhance positioning accuracy in the east component by 54%.

Assessing seismic displacements and early warning using kinematic PPP with MADOCA real-time products: A case study of 2023 Kahramanmaraş (Türkiye) earthquakes

Early warning and emergency hazard response studies in large earthquakes require rapid and reliable determination of earthquake magnitude. The magnitude of an earthquake can be estimated based on peak ground displacement (PGD) values captured from high-rate GNSS records. In this study, two major earthquakes that hit Kahramanmaraş Province on February 6, 2023, were investigated by using the real-time Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Precise Point Positioning (PPP) technique to confirm the usability of GNSS in early warning. Data from high-rate (1-Hz) GNSS stations were evaluated with the real-time kinematic PPP approach utilizing the multi-GNSS advanced demonstration tool for orbit and clock analysis (MADOCA) products and JPL's GipsyX software. In addition, static PPP was also used to identify the permanent displacements caused by earthquakes. Static PPP results demonstrated that significant displacements were detected at stations close to the epicenters, particularly the 446.86 cm horizontal displacement in the EKZ1 station. Considering the kinematic PPP results revealed that when PGD values calculated from seismic waves, functional model, and updated coefficients were implemented, the moment magnitude of the Pazarcık earthquake was estimated as Mw 7.78, which was reported as Mw 7.8 by USGS and Mw 7.7 by AFAD, whilst the magnitude of the Elbistan earthquake was computed as Mw 7.56, which was reported as Mw 7.5 by USGS and 7.6 by AFAD. Overall, this study validates the effectiveness of the real-time GNSS PPP as an attractive alternative for analyzing coseismic events and supporting early warning.

Improving GNSS PPP Performance in the South China Under Different Weather Conditions by Using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model‐Derived Wet Delay Corrections

AbstractAtmospheric wet delay caused by Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) significantly impacts the performance of many geodetic surveying systems such as Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). In this study, we use wet delay corrections forecast by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to enhance GNSS Precise Point Positioning (PPP) during two observation periods with two different weather conditions, that is, period 1: March 01 to 14, 2020 (average PWV: 23.5 kg/m2) and period 2: June 02 to 15, 2020 (flooding weather with average PWV: 55.6 kg/m2), over the South China. PWV data from 277 to 263 GNSS stations are assimilated into WRF model to enhance the WRF water vapor forecasting capability for period 1 and period 2, respectively. Wet delay corrections from two different WRF configurations, that is, WRF no data assimilation and WRF with assimilation of GNSS PWV, are used to augment the PPP. Totally, eight WRF‐enhanced PPP schemes are tested. The results show that WRF‐enhanced PPP schemes generally have a better positioning performance in the up component than traditional PPP. After using WRF wet delay corrections, for static mode, the vertical positioning accuracy is improved by 14.6% and 33.7% for period 1 and period 2, respectively. The corresponding convergence time are reduced by 41.8% and 25.0% for period 1 and period 2, respectively. For kinematic mode, the positioning accuracy improvements in the up component reach 13.8% and 19.0% for period 1 and period 2, respectively. The kinematic PPP convergence time is reduced by up to 8.2% for period 1.

BDS-3 six-frequency precise point positioning: effects of receiver-dependent inter-frequency clock bias and multi-frequency contributions

We find that there is time-varying bias at the receiver in BDS-3 multi-frequency phase observations, which will lead to receiver-dependent inter-frequency clock bias (RIFCB) and damage the rigor of BDS-3 multi-frequency precise point positioning (PPP) model. A unified RIFCB correction method compatible with uncombined and ionospheric-free combined PPP models using any BDS-3 frequencies is proposed. The contributions of multi-frequency integration to BDS-3 static and kinematic PPP performance are evaluated. The results indicate that the RIFCB amplitude can reach 1 dm. If the RIFCB correction is ignored, the phase observation residuals present a systematic bias. RIFCB has potential effects on precise time transfer, ionospheric monitoring, and fractional cycle bias estimation. Experimental results show that the long-term frequency stability of time transfer can be improved by correcting RIFCB. The joint use of all BDS-3 six-frequency signals can significantly shorten the convergence time, and the positioning accuracy can also be slightly improved.

Performance of kinematic GPS PPP AR under different ionospheric scintillation conditions

To analyze the performance of Global Positioning System (GPS) Precise Point Positioning (PPP) Ambiguity Resolution (AR) under various ionospheric scintillation environments, we selected GPS data of ionospheric scintillation monitoring receivers (ISMR) and geodetic receivers from high-latitude and low-latitude regions during 2021–2023. We conducted GPS Kinematic PPP using Canadian Spatial Reference System (CSRS) PPP and used the maximum and average values of σφ and S4 as indicators to characterize the intensity of phase scintillation and amplitude scintillation for ISMRs, while the maximum and average values of Rate of Total Electron Content Index (ROTI) to characterize the intensity of ionospheric scintillation for geodetic receivers. We also used ambiguity resolved percentage (ARP) and the 3-Dimensional Root Mean Square (3D RMS) of positioning errors as performance metrics for PPP-AR and PPP. As the maximum and average values of ionospheric scintillation indices increase, the PPP-ARP for high-latitude ISMRs decreases to 90.0 %, and the 3D RMS can reach 0.204 m. During ionospheric quiet conditions, positioning accuracy of GPS PPP can reach the cm-mm level. As the geomagnetic latitude decreases, the scintillation effects on PPP-AR and PPP become more pronounced for high-latitude ISMRs. Compared with high-latitudes, ISMRs located at low-latitudes are more severely affected by scintillation, with PPP-ARP at the station HNLW in China and the station UFBA in Brazil dropping to 80.0 % and 60.0 %, respectively. The 3D RMS can reach 0.288 m and 0.341 m. The results of geodetic receives are consistent with those of ISMRs, with 3D RMS of positioning errors up to 0.240 m and 0.256 m for CYNE and MAL2, respectively, while PPP-ARP drops to 60.4 % and 79.6 %. Additionally, we observed a strong positive correlation between ionospheric scintillation duration and the maximum values of σφ, S4 and ROTI.

A flexible method for BDS-3 multi-frequency phase observable-specific biases estimation and its PPP analysis with different ambiguity resolution strategies

With the rapid progress of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), integer ambiguity resolution has gradually become one of the key factors that affecting Precise Point Positioning (PPP) to achieve high-precision positioning results and fast convergence. Fortunately, the proposal of observable-specific code/phase biases (OSB) has greatly alleviated this problem tremendously. Different from obtaining OSB by dual-frequency linear combinations, this research proposed BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) OSB estimation method from raw observations. This method allows for more flexible estimation in a global network, without the need to compose the complex linear combinations when involving multi-frequency measurements processing. The BDS-3 observation data collected from 112 stations over one month (October 2022), containing B1C/B1I/B2a/B2b/B3I frequencies, were used for five-frequency phase OSBs estimation. Subsequently, static and kinematic PPP were executed utilizing two different ambiguity resolution strategies to corroborate the efficacy of this method. The results revealed that the BDS-3 five-frequency phase OSBs possessed good monthly stability, with standard deviation less than 0.3 cycle. High position accuracy was achieved in the static mode by fixing the ambiguity directly, with root mean square (RMS) of 3.0, 4.8 and 9.9 mm. Meanwhile, the ambiguity fixed rate was maintained at a high level around 96 % in multi-frequency tests. Simultaneously, the kinematic mode also presented the centimeter-level dynamic positioning results and the positioning accuracy improved by 55, 31 and 17 % in the East, North and Up components, respectively. Compared to the float solutions, the adoption of multi-frequency OSBs significantly accelerated the convergence speed by 55 % on average.

SEAMLESS PRECISE KINEMATIC POSITIONING IN THE HIGH-LATITUDE ENVIRONMENTS: CASE STUDY IN THE ANTARCTIC REGION

Scientific activities in the Antarctic regions have increased daily within the last decades to achieve many different projects. The ice sheet over 98% of the Antarctic continent, the coldest, driest, and windiest place in the world and has the largest desert, makes it very difficult to conduct any kind of study and research. Among them, precise hydrographic surveying should be conducted for many different applications that require reliable and accurate positioning. The output from these surveys plays a vital role in understanding sea level changes, global warming, sea ice movement, navigation and many others. The harsh atmospheric and topographic conditions of the region pose additional challenges to surveyors in the use of conventional terrestrial measurement techniques and satellite-based positioning methods (GNSS) to make positioning. Low quality and noisy GNSS observations with low satellite elevations made their positioning vulnerable to cycle slip, multipath, and discontinuity in Antarctica. This study analyses the performance of the post-processed kinematic Precise Point Positioning (PPP) based on the web-based online GNSS processing service for marine surveying in the high-latitude environment. Within this frame, two realistic experiments were carried out on a ship and zodiac boat during the 6th Turkish Antarctic Expedition (TAE). The results show that the PPP coordinates using an online GNSS processing service provide kinematic positioning with centimetre level of accuracy using a single GNSS receiver. The general results showed that the PPP technique allows for much faster and accurate positioning in remote and high-latitude areas at a lower cost.

Evaluation of Triple-Frequency GPS/Galileo/Beidou Kinematic Precise Point Positioning Using Real-Time CNES Products for Maritime Applications

Abstract Our research aims to evaluate the triple-frequency GPS/Galileo/BeiDou kinematic precise point positioning (PPP) accuracy for the international maritime organization (IMO) positioning accuracy and integrity requirements. The real-time Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) satellite orbit and clock products are used to simulate real-time scenarios. GPS/Galileo/BeiDou observations are collected from a moving vessel. Both dual-frequency and triple-frequency ionosphere-free PPP models are developed. Different satellite system combinations are used, including GPS-only, GPS/Galileo, GPS/BeiDou, and GPS/Galileo/BeiDou. The GPS-only differential solution is used as a reference. It is found that both dual- and triple-frequency kinematic PPP solutions achieve the IMO accuracy requirements at 95% confidence level for ocean, coastal, port approach, port, inland waterways, and track control navigation applications, except the automatic docking application. Moreover, the PPP solutions fulfilled the IMO integrity requirements for all navigation phase applications, but the GPS and GPS/BeiDou PPP solutions did not fulfill the automatic docking integrity requirement.

Stochastic modeling of the receiver clock parameter in Galileo-only and multi-GNSS PPP solutions

In Precise Point Positioning (PPP), the receiver clock parameter is typically estimated independently in each observation epoch, which increases the noise of the estimated station coordinates and troposphere parameters due to correlations. Applying stochastic modeling to the receiver clock parameter stabilizes PPP solutions and reduces clock noise for the time transfer. However, the receiver clock modeling is possible only for the GNSS receivers connected to the utmost stable atomic clocks. We propose receiver clock modeling that involves the Markov stochastic process in the form of a random walk. We test different levels of random walk constraints for GNSS stations equipped with different types of clocks for Galileo-only and multi-GNSS solutions in kinematic and static PPP. In multi-GNSS solutions, the common clock parameter is derived with inter-system biases (ISBs). This raises the question of the constraints that should be imposed on the common clock only or also on the ISBs. We found that similar results can be achieved by imposing constraints on the common clock parameter and estimating ISB as a constant parameter and when constraining the common clock parameter and ISBs with a ratio of 1:100. Other ratios of clock-to-ISB constraints, such as 1:1 and 1:10, give inferior results. In the kinematic PPP, stochastic clock modeling has a marginal impact on the North and East coordinate components, whereas the Up component is substantially improved for GNSS receivers equipped with hydrogen masers. In the static PPP, the clock modeling improves the time transfer, due to the reduced noise of the clocks.

Performance evaluation of BDS-3 new B1C/B2a and legacy B1I/B3I signals: Observational quality, POD and PPP

In addition to the BeiDou regional navigation satellite system (BDS-2) backward compatible B1I and B3I signals, the BeiDou global navigation satellite system (BDS-3) also broadcast the B1C and B2a signals for compatibility with other Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), and providing satellite-based augmentation service for the International Civil Aviation Organization. Considering that the majority of the existing researches on the BDS-3 precise orbit determination (POD) and precise point positioning (PPP) are based on the B1I/B3I signals, the special attention that systematically comparing the data quality, POD accuracy and PPP performance through B1I/B3I and B1C/B2a signals is aroused in this paper. Signal characteristics of different receivers and antennas for the aforesaid four various signals were analyzed in terms of the carrier-to-noise density ratio (C/N0), pseudorange multipath and observation noise. The B1C signal exhibits the minimum C/N0 values, and the B3I and B2a signals have the smaller pseudorange multipath errors. The smallest pseudorange noise can be observed form the B2a signal, while the root mean squares (RMSs) for carrier phase noise show tiny differences among the four signals. The BDS-3 POD results indicate that the orbit overlapping arc error in three-dimensional (3D) direction is 0.069 and 0.076 m for the B1C/B2a and B1I/B3I, and the standard deviation of the satellite laser ranging validation is 0.041 m for both the two schemes. The clock offset products were evaluated with respect to the precise clock products from Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ), and the standard deviations (STDs) are 0.166 and 0.176 ns for the B1C/B2a and B1I/B3I. Finally, there is no apparent difference in the RMSs for B1C/B2a and B1I/B3I static PPP, while the convergence time that shortened by 31.4 % can be achieved for B1C/B2a. For kinematic PPP, the 3D RMS is 0.043 m and the convergence time is 31.1 min for the B1C/B2a, which is reduced by 14.0 % and 35.2 %, respectively, compared to B1I/B3I.

Studying the Fixing Rate of GPS PPP Ambiguity Resolution Under Different Geomagnetic Storm Intensities

AbstractGlobal Positioning System (GPS) Precise Point Positioning (PPP) with correct fixing ambiguity resolution (AR) can reach cm‐mm level positioning accuracy. However, this accuracy can be degraded by the geomagnetic storm effects. To comprehensively investigate the ambiguity resolved percentage (ARP) of GPS kinematic PPP, referred to as PPP‐ARP, under different intensities of geomagnetic storms, based on the Natural Resources Canada's Canadian Spatial Reference System (CSRS) PPP, this study for the first time gives the correlation between the PPP‐ARP and storm intensity using 67 storms occurred in the past 5 years of 2018–2022. Experimental results indicate that the PPP‐ARP decreases gradually as the increase of geomagnetic storm intensity. Under quiet and low geomagnetic conditions (Dstmin > −50 nT), the PPP‐ARP of global GNSS stations can achieve more than 96%, while these during strong storms (Dstmin ≤ −100 nT) are generally lower than 90.0%, especially for the PPP‐ARP of some stations located at low latitudes which are lower than 40.0%. The mechanism of PPP‐ARP decrease under geomagnetic storms is mainly due to the cycle slips and even loss of lock of GNSS signals caused by the storms induced ionospheric disturbances and scintillations. In addition, different from many previous studies, we found that the CSRS‐PPP with AR can achieve good positioning accuracy (3D RMS <0.2 m) even under strong geomagnetic storms.

Kinematic Precise Point Positioning Performance-Based Cost-Effective Robot Localization System

The use of high-precision positioning systems in modern navigation applications is crucial since location data is one of the most important pieces of information in Industry 4.0, especially for robots operating outdoors. In the modernization process of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positioning, precise point positioning (PPP) has demonstrated its effectiveness in comparison to traditional differential positioning methods over the past thirty years. However, various challenges hinder the integration of PPP techniques into Internet of Things (IoT) systems for robot localization, with accuracy being a primary concern. This accuracy is impacted by factors such as satellite availability and signal disruptions in outdoor environments, resulting in less precise determination of satellite observations. Effectively addressing various GNSS errors is crucial when collecting PPP observations. The paper investigates the trade-off between kinematic PPP accuracy and cost effectiveness, through the examination of various influencing factors, including the choice of GNSS system (single or mixed), observation type (single or dual frequency), and satellite geometry. This research investigates kinematic PPP accuracy variation on a 10.4 km observed track based on different factors, using the GNSS system (single or mixed), and observation type (single or dual frequency). It can be concluded that mixed (GPS/GLONASS) dual frequency offers a 3D position accuracy of 9 cm, while mixed single frequency offers a 3D position accuracy of 13 cm. In industry, the results enable manufacturers to select suitable robot localization solutions according to the outdoor working environment (number of available satellites), economical constraint (single or dual frequency), and 3D position accuracy.

Improving IRI-2016 global total electron content maps using ELM neural network

The International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) is the most widely used empirical model for presenting ionosphere parameters like Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) or electron density indices. This model is suitable for studying long-term ionospheric conditions. However, for precise applications like Precise Point Positioning (PPP), the obtained VTEC values cannot provide the required precision. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have become the burgeoning case of studies in all scientific fields. This is due to their capability to simply parametrize a relation between non-linear physical parameters and several independent variables. The goal of this study is to implement an Extremely Learning Machine (ELM) to improve the IRI-2016 model accuracy using historical Spherical Harmonic (SH) coefficients of the IGS Global Ionosphere Maps (GIMs). The choice of ELM was due to their decreased convergence time and not falling in the local minimum solution. For the considered supervised learning process, the IRI-2016 and IGS GIMs SH coefficients (256 coefficients up to degree and order 15) were chosen as the variables for the input and output layer of the ELM, respectively. Then, after the training of the ANN, one can input SH coefficients of the IRI-2016 and derive improved SH coefficients, which can be transformed into the GIMs. The results showed that between several considered cases for training and prediction intervals, the one with 365 and 7 days for training and prediction time intervals had shown a mean Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of about 1.6 TECU compared to IGS GIMs, which was 56% better than the corresponding IRI-2016 RMSE value. Also, the kinematic Precise Point Positioning (kinematic-PPP) using single frequency observation of 6 IGS stations has been done using ELM derived VTEC values. The calculated mean 3D positions error of about 1.85 m showed that the ELM-derived VTEC values might be implemented for high precision real-time applications.

BDS/GPS/Galileo Precise Point Positioning Performance Analysis of Android Smartphones Based on Real-Time Stream Data

Smartphones with the Android operating system can acquire Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) raw pseudorange and carrier phase observations, which can provide a new way for the general public to obtain precise position information. However, only postprocessing precise orbit and clock offset products in some older smart devices are applied in current studies. The performances of precise point positioning (PPP) with the smartphone using real-time products and newly smartphones are still unrevealed, which is more valuable for real-time applications. This study investigates the observation data quality and multi-GNSS real-time PPP performance using recent smartphones. Firstly, the observed carrier-to-noise density ratio (C/N0), number of satellites and position dilution of precision (PDOP) of GNSS observations are evaluated. The results demonstrate that the C/N0 received by Huawei Mate40 is better than that of the Huawei P40 for GPS, BDS, QZSS and Galileo systems, while the GLONASS is poorer, and the PDOP of the Huawei P40 is slightly better than that of Mate40. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis of real-time precise orbit and clock offset products performance is conducted. The experiment result expresses that the orbit and clock offset performance of GPS and Galileo is better than that of BDS-3 and GLONASS, and BDS-2 is the worst. Finally, single- and dual-frequency multi-GNSS combined PPP experiments using observations received from smartphones and real-time products are conducted; the results indicate that the real-time static PPP using a smartphone can achieve decimeter-level positioning accuracy, and kinematic PPP can achieve meter-level positioning accuracy after convergence.

A Dynamic Continuous Constrained Phase Factor Graph Optimization Method for GNSS Kinematic Precise Point Positioning

Carrier phase measurements play a more critical role in achieving precise positioning for lower noise and insensitivity to multipath error over code (pseudorange) measurements. Real-time kinematic (RTK) is the most used precise positioning technique. However, the application costs are increased due to the demands for differential base stations. The undifferenced precise point positioning (PPP) does not require differential station assistance but is typically for static use. This paper proposes a dynamic continuous constrained phase (DCCP) method based on factor graph optimization for kinematic positioning without differential stations, even in the presence of cycle slips. The precise velocity estimated via integral doppler and the time correlation of phase ambiguity are regarded as the probability constraints in the factor graph. A real-world experiment was carried out to verify the feasibility of the DCCP method. Experimental results show that the proposed method had a better performance than the kinematic PPP method and window carrier phase (WCP) optimization method with 0.034m standard deviation and 1.338m mean error. It is our hope that this approach provides new insight into the study of other time-correlated state estimation problems.

Performance analysis of oceanographic research vessel precise point positioning based on BDS/GNSS RTK receivers

With the completion of the BeiDou Global system (BDS3), multi-GNSS is expected to provide better marine positioning services. However, its performance on high-velocity vessels in remote marine environments has not been evaluated. Therefore, this paper aims to use two integrated real-time kinematic (RTK) receivers to evaluate the performance of BDS/GNSS remote marine kinematic precise point positioning (PPP). Firstly, the single-system positioning performance was compared. Then, two multi-GNSS PPP accuracy evaluation methods based on the ellipsoidal height difference of two receivers and the ultrashort baseline fixed solution were designed, and the Up-direction RMS values were 0.086 and 0.087 m, respectively. With the contribution of the multi-GNSS, although the multipath and noise RMS values between the marine and ground environments were about 2.87 and 1.58 times for two RTK receivers, the low-cost RTK receiver can achieve high-precision kinematic marine PPP with the three-dimensional RMS better than 10 cm.

Assessing the Performance of Precise Point Positioning (PPP) with the Fully Serviceable Multi-GNSS Constellations: GPS, BDS-3, and Galileo

Nowadays, both BDS-3 and Galileo can provide global positioning and navigation services. This contribution carried out a comprehensive analysis and validation of positioning performance in terms of positioning accuracy (RMS) and convergence time, which are derived from BDS-3 and Galileo precise point positioning (PPP) solutions at a global scale. Meanwhile, the comparison with GPS was demonstrated. The performance and geographical distribution of RMS and convergence time for each satellite system were analyzed. GPS outperforms the other two systems on a global scale. Galileo and BDS-3, on the other hand, only perform moderately well in certain latitude zones. The combination of dual systems related to each single system is analyzed. For the dual-system combinations, the combination of systems presents a definite advantage over Galileo and BDS-3, and this advantage is more pronounced for the kinematic PPP. For GPS, the combination with Galileo and BDS-3 has little improvement in positioning performance. For the dual-system combination based on Galileo and BDS-3, the RMS and convergence time can be improved by 50% compared with the single system. The influence of single-system kinematic PPP selection for precise products from different MGEX analysis centers on positioning performance was studied. Among the five precise products, grg products have the best positioning performance for GPS, while cod products have the best positioning performance for Galileo and BDS-3. The difference in RMS and convergence time between 2 cm and 15 min can be caused by different precise product selections.

Performance Assessment of Multi-GNSS Real-Time Products from Various Analysis Centers

The performance of real-time precise point positioning (PPP) relies primarily on the availability and quality of orbit and clock corrections. In this research, we collected data streams from 12 real-time mount points of IGS Real-Time Service (RTS) or analysis centers for a one-month period and conducted a performance assessment, including product latency and data availability, accuracy of orbit, clock and positioning performance. The epoch availability of GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BDS was more than 98.5%, 95.79%, 94.20% and 85.9%, respectively. In addition, the orbit and clock errors of different real-time corrections was investigated. Then, PPP in static and kinematic for 16 IGS stations was conducted. The results show the real-time PPP for different products has a longer convergence time and a slightly worse accuracy than those of the post-processing PPP. For static PPP over 24 h, the real-time products of WHU had the best performance, with a mean RMSE of 1.0 cm in the horizontal and vertical directions and a median convergence time of 12.0 min. The products of CAS had the faster convergence speed due to the shortest product latency. Regarding real-time kinematic PPP for GPS only in an hourly batch, the real-time products of WHU and ESA performed best with a mean RMSE of 10.8 cm and 9.5 cm in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. Additionally, the PPP for different real-time products with the multi-GNSS combination obtained higher accuracy than those with GPS only in post-processing or real-time mode, and the PPP with the GPS/GLONASS/Galileo/BDS combination had the fastest convergence speed and best positioning performance. The hourly based kinematic PPP results of CAS, DLR, GFZ and WHU with the GREC combination had positioning errors smaller than 5.2 cm.
