ENHANCING EFL LEARNERS' SPEAKING ABILITIES THROUGH THE USE OF PODCASTS AND ONLINE DRAMA SCRIPTS

It is crucial to communicate using a language. However, a lot of EFL students had trouble expressing their ideas. 25 freshmen joined the therapy to make it better. To improve the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process, the teacher created a WhatsApp group application during pre-learning. The instructor guided the pupils in creating sentences by teaching them the lexico-grammar of bilingualism. The teacher displayed the podcast's URL on the screen to help students coordinate their contextual usage. Using this kind of content, the students improved their noticing, listening, repeating, shadowing, and translating skills. It is the audio and video version of the podcast. The pupils must improve their capacity for information exchange. In order to appease them, the instructor displayed the URL of an online drama script on the screen. The pupils rehearsed the role play in order to finish the assignment. The study's results were then qualitatively examined. As a result of using podcasts and online theatrical scripts to study speaking, the students' capacity for presenting ideas increased. The novelty is this approach leverages the power of multimedia to create an engaging and authentic learning experience that goes beyond traditional classroom activities. Teachers must use these kinds of findings when instructing related subjects. It also encourages other researchers to carry out studies in related disciplines.

Twitter and Fake News: Implications for National Security in Nigeria

The emergence of new social media platforms such as Twitter has revolutionized the means of communication and dissemination, providing unprecedented networking avenues for immediate news spread. But this ease has also increased the spread of fake news which is a concern faced by many nations including Nigeria. Fake news simply deceives, suppresses facts relevant to political life or spreads information intended only to harm, having a direct impact on national security. For Nigeria, a country rich in ethnic, religious and political prejudice, the effects of fake news can go as far as inciting violence, destroying the social fabric or even causing instability. This study investigated the prevalence, characteristics and consequences of fake news on Twitter during critical events in Nigeria, using a qualitative methodology to understand how false information is spread and what potential threat it poses to national security. The paper uses secondary data from the extant literature and Twitter-Archive for investigating how fake news spreads, consequently shaping public opinion, damaging social solidarity and threatening national security. It lists the top drivers of misinformation in Nigeria – including poor media literacy, political divisiveness and over-dependence on social media as sources of news. It also puts forward solutions to address the risks posed by this kind of content on Twitter, including government legislation, fact-checking mechanisms, media literacy initiatives and consumer take-backs. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between Twitter, fake news, and national security in Nigeria, highlighting the urgent need for proactive measures to protect the country’s stability and well-being.

Synthetic ethnography: Field devices for the qualitative study of generative models

Advancements in generative artificial intelligence have led to a rapid proliferation of machine learning models capable of synthesizing text, images, sounds, and other kinds of content. While the increasing realism of synthetic content stokes fears about misinformation and triggers debates around intellectual property, generative models are adopted across creative industries and synthetic media seep into cultural production. Qualitative research in the social and human sciences has dedicated comparatively little attention to this category of machine learning, particularly in terms of what types of novel research methodology they both demand and facilitate. In this article, we propose a methodological approach for the qualitative study of generative models grounded on the experimentation with field devices which we call synthetic ethnography. Synthetic ethnography is not simply a qualitative research methodology applied to the study of the social and cultural contexts developing around generative artificial intelligence, but also strives to envision practical and experimental ways to repurpose these models as research tools in their own right. After briefly introducing generative models and revisiting the trajectory of digital ethnographic research, we discuss three case studies for which the authors have developed experimental field devices to study different aspects of generative artificial intelligence ethnographically. In the conclusion, we derive a broader methodological proposal from these case studies, arguing that synthetic ethnography facilitates insights into how the algorithmic processes, training datasets and latent spaces behind these systems modulate bias, reconfigure agency, and challenge epistemological categories.

Belief, perception, and the laws of appearance

ABSTRACT Some philosophers claim that there are certain laws that restrict what kinds of things we can perceptually represent. Those laws do not apply, however, to beliefs. To be a representationalist is to hold that there is a similarity between perception and belief. If this is the case, why do the laws apply to one kind of mental state, but not the other? I argue that the puzzle is not a puzzle for representationalists in general, but only for some forms of representationalism that hold excessive analogies between perception and belief. I will consider three kinds of views: a view that identifies perception with belief; a view that claims that perception and belief share the same kind of content, viz. propositions; and the view that belief and perception are both intentional states, but do not share the same type of content. I will argue that the laws of appearance rule out views that identify perception with belief, and that consider propositions to be the contents of perception.

Introduction. Our relationships with GenAI and the media: Testing the limits of transparency, trust and moral agency

We present the last part of this special issue on Use of Artificial Intelligence in Communication: Ethical Implications for Media. This editorial examines the role that humans should play in the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in the media. It provides an overview of transparency as an ethical obligation in relation to trust and truthfulness when using GenAI to create different kinds of content. Finally, it enters into the debate about the moral status of machines as we anticipate ethical questions in the study of ethics and GenAI in the media. Six articles complete this special issue with studies examining implications of GenAI for semiotics research, public relations, advertising, fact checking, information literacy and journalism education.

What a jerk!

AbstractI argue that “general pejoratives” such as “jerk” or “bastard” differ crucially from items such as “that damn N”. While items such as the latter typically serve to give vent to one's attitudes, general pejoratives essentially involve judgments about a person's behaviour or character. This is particularly evident in cases where pejoratives occur not as epithets, but as predicate nominals. If we want to account for the overall contribution of words such as “jerk”, there are three kinds of content that ought to be distinguished: truth‐conditional contents, evaluative presuppositions, and expressive contents that are either at‐issue (in the case of expressive predicates) or non‐at‐issue (in the case of epithets).

중세국어 교육의 내용과 자료에 대한 고찰

Objectives The purpose of this study is to examine what contents and materials should be used to teach Middle Korean language. Methods ‘Content selection criteria’ were established, and the contents of Middle Korean language education were selected based on this. In consideration of the contents selected in this way and the ‘material selection criteria’, I selected Middle Korean language education materials and attempted to confirm that the selected contents could be taught through the selected materials. Results According to the content selection criteria, the contents of Middle Korean language education were selected in each aspect of ‘orthography, phonology, grammar, and vocabulary’, and according to the material selection criteria, the Korean version of 『Hunminjeongeum』(<Royal foreword>) and 『Samganghaengsildo』(｢Jinsiyanggo｣ and ｢Wangcheon Iksu｣) were selected as Middle Korean language education materials. It was confirmed that the selected contents could be taught and learned through the selected materials. Conclusions Middle Korean language education involves the teaching and learning of ‘contents’ along with ‘materials’, and by considering these together organically, we can approach from a more realistic perspective what kind of contents and materials are best for teaching Middle Korean language.

78‐4: Invited Paper: Defining and Characterizing Programmatic Image Sequences for Multi‐Disciplinary Applications

In the evolving domain of High Dynamic Range (HDR) display metrology, the precise definition and systematic characterization of input signals is important. Using input signals that include both spatially and temporally complex image sequences is beneficial to reflect properties of real‐world content as well as to cover corner cases. One challenge with using this kind of content is to verify if it is indeed suitable for the intended purpose. This paper introduces an automated framework employing a set of statistical measures to define and characterize content, which then can serve as an important steppingstone towards programmatic image sequences and testing workflows.

The impact of deplatforming the far right: an analysis of YouTube and BitChute

ABSTRACT The content moderation practice of deplatforming, i.e., the removal of undesired actors, has become common on social media platforms such as YouTube. Our study aims to examine the impact of deplatforming on prominent far-right channels on YouTube. In our study, we are particularly interested in the deplatforming of prominent far-right channels such as Alex Jones, James Allsup, or Red Ice TV to understand the impact deplatforming has on them. To do so, we analyze two datasets: We check whether 11,198 YouTube channels have been removed in 22 months between 2018 and 2019 and for what reason. We then focus on the far right and check whether the deplatformed far-right channels have found a new home on the alternative video platform BitChute. The time frame for this study includes the removal of some critically important far-right figures. Our analysis shows that deplatforming effectively minimizes the reach of disinformation and extreme speech, as alternative platforms allowing this kind of content cannot mitigate the negative effect of being deplatformed on YouTube.

YouTube as a Source of Information on Air Pollution: Significance for Community Health.

Air pollution is a pervasive global public health threat. The purpose of this study was to assess the content of 100 widely viewed English language YouTube videos on air pollution using the search term 'air pollution.' Content categories were created using comprehensive fact sheets and were coded as being present or not in each video. Cumulatively, the 100 videos sampled received 32,826,294 views and 303,692 likes, with averages of 328,263 and 3,068 respectively. The majority of videos (n = 72) were created by broadcast or internet-based news, 12 of the videos were created by professionals, 7 were created by a consumer and 9 were created by others. Three kinds of content were featured in a majority (> 50%) of the videos: "sources of pollution," "environmental impacts," and "solutions offered" and the videos covering each of these topics collectively garnered more than 26 million views and 249,000 likes. Independent one-tailed t-tests (α = 0.05) showed an association between covering sources of pollution and the number of views and likes. For both, videos featuring this content had a higher average number of views (467,391.08 vs. 80,924.03, p = .0383) and likes (4,450.78 vs. 647.03, p = .0383). Additionally, videos showing environmental impacts received more views than those that did not (547,901.49 vs. 80,585.43, p = .0373). This research can serve as a starting point to describe information being conveyed about an important global public health problem. Future research is needed to improve understanding about ways to utilize YouTube and other social media for public health education and advocacy to increase consumers' awareness and facilitate the informed decision-making process.

“TikTokers” Teacher In The Code Of Ethic For Teacher In Islamic Education

In the digital era, teachers are not only educators in schools but can also work as TikTokers in the TikTok application or cyberspace. The success of TikTokers in earning a lot of money by creating various kinds of content has motivated teachers to become content creators. However, not all teachers are wise and careful when choosing content topics. Moreover, the content created by teachers is easily accessible to many people, including their students. The diverse range of content produced by teachers on the TikTok application can have an impact on the knowledge and character development of students and society as a whole. This is because the TikTok application is currently popular among people of all age groups, including children, teenagers, adults, and the elderly. Upon examining the content created by teachers, it is evident that some teachers are appropriate, careful, and wise in their content creation, while others are not. Therefore, this discussion aims to explore the phenomenon of teachers as TikTokers from the perspective of Islamic education, focusing on teachers' creative activities in cyberspace through the TikTok application. Autonomy of Generative AI Digital Platforms in Regulating Relations with Users

The impact of the phenomenon of digital platforms on public relations can be explained, inter alia, by the fact that platform operators are beginning to compete with states for the right to set rules for users, which include almost all participants in civil turnover, inventive and creative industries, consumers of content, etc. Conditional privatization of the regulatory impact on public relations, based on the example of analyzing the rules of generative artificial intelligence platforms for creating various kinds of content, urges the State to respond. With regard to the legal regulation of digital platforms, it seems possible to build such a multi-level system of regulation of public relations that can be based on both general principles of law and codified norms. The developing discussion around the concept of the digital code of the Russian Federation allows us to formulate approaches to identify those areas of relations in the digital environment that are subject to state regulation in regulatory legal acts, as well as those that can be regulated at the level of "soft law" and within the framework of contracts between platform operators and users.

Social Media Health Prevention Strategies for Hospitals to Captivate Young Adults' Interest

Social media has the potential to be used by hospitals to play their role as health-promoting hospitals. By utilizing social media, hospitals can perform health prevention services at a reasonable cost. Nowadays, youths are more likely to suffer non-communicable diseases (NCD) like Diabetic Mellitus due to lifestyle changes that are sedentary. However, most youths consider that health promotion messages that already exist are unappealing. The purpose of this study is to determine the relevant strategy to deliver a health promotion message through social media that can captivate the youth’s interest. This study is a qualitative study with a phenomenology design. Data collection was carried out from three focus group discussions (FGD) that were selected by purposive and selective sampling methods. The data was then analyzed with the inductive theme analysis method. Triangulation and transferability tests were conducted to assess the validity of this study. Health promotion delivery must ensure that the message is attractive and easy to understand To expand the target audience's understanding. Health promotion should be done by considering what the message is, who the target is, what kind of content is, and on what platform. Besides, the content should be relevant, entertaining, credible, and easy to be understood.

Review of The Role of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Contemporary Digital Marketing

In our research, we investigated how Serbian freelancers feel about different generative programs based on artificial intelligence. We managed to discover what kind of content they create the most, why they use this new techology, and which software they prefer. We also investigated respondents' attitudes toward the ethics of generative applications. Our results show that freelancers rate their personal ethics highly, with an average rating of 4.46 (on a scale of 1 to 5), but their actions related to the use of artificial intelligence with a much lower average rating of 2.15 (again, on a scale of 1 to 5). This difference opens up room for further research opportunities, while our findings help advance academic knowledge in the fields of digital marketing and artificial intelligence.

The results of this activity are kebaya sewing and beauty salon business actors who have changed their personal Facebook account to a business Facebook account by adding a fan page feature. So that business actors in kebaya sewing and beauty salons can expand their market share through promotions on social media.

An Implication of Cannibalism Motif in “the Myth of Seolmundae-halmang” of Korea

"Cannibalism" is widely regarded as an absolute taboo for cultivated humanity. Not only does the bare citation of the word" cannibalism" and encountering images about this subject make utmost people extremely uncomfortable. Nonetheless, the “ cannibal motif ” exists in humanities folk literature, and why is it being repeated in modern literature, media, and culture? If humanity can achieve a sense of spiritual satisfaction or there's a universal idea that desperately wishes to partake through such a horrifying motif, what kind of content can it be? When trying to address this curiosity, there's an interesting text which is worth noting. It's “ the myth of Seolmundae- halmang( Grandma Seolmundae) ”, which is being passed down on South Korea's Jeju Island. Seolmundae- halmang was worshipped as the creator goddess of Jeju Island, yet in the stories about her death, she's eaten by her own sons. Why did this goddess have to experience such a terrible death? Also, if “ myth ” contains motifs of universal human life, what was the content that Jeju Island's mythology group wanted to share through the death and devouring of the goddess? To find answers to these questions, several former studies on the conception of cannibalism were examined, thereby the aspects of cannibalism that was in human life was verified. As a result, the cannibalistic motif of this myth confirmed that the endo-cannibalism concept of the primordial mythology enthusiasts group was the result of the divine succession process from Seolmundae-halmang to her sons. Furthermore, when interpreted in the context of symbolism for human reality, it is also revealed that children who have grown up at the expense of their parents have embodied the universal and realworld principle of human life in which they realized their parent's sacrifices and inherited their lives. The significance of such research results can be recognized for investigating the mythological meaning and value of cannibalistic elements of the Seolmundae-halmang myth. This allowed us to reveal the meaning and value of one of Korea's major mythological materials more fully, as well as confirm the universal value of Korea's mythological materials.

Posting photos that reflect positive aspects of everyday life on Instagram increases appreciation, life satisfaction, and happiness

We conducted two studies to verify whether using Instagram to post photos that reflect positive aspects of one’s life increased appreciation and subsequently improved well-being. In the correlational Study 1, participants ( N = 291) were regular users of Instagram, and in the randomized controlled trial Study 2 ( N = 283), they were newcomers. We found that regular users are motivated to use Instagram to capture life’s positive moments, and their higher frequency of posting was associated with increased appreciation and, in turn, greater life satisfaction and happiness (Study 1). New users, regardless of whether they were instructed to post positive photos (experimental conditions) or not (control conditions), posted exactly this kind of content. The more positive the photos were, the higher participants’ appreciation, life satisfaction, and happiness (Study 2). Posting appreciative content on social media might have a beneficial impact on users’ well-being and become a foundation for future interventions.

The Impact of Using Social Media on the Mental Health of Adolescents

Social media usage has exponentially risen over the past decade, with about 4.26 billion social media users in 2021, and it is projected to increase to almost 6 billion by 2027. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend, leading to a significant increase in social media usage. However, excessive social media use may lead to negative impacts on mental health, such as anxiety, depression, and social isolation. This research aims to investigate the impact of social media on the mental health of Thai teenagers, identify potential correlations between social media use and mental health outcomes, and develop strategies to mitigate the negative effects of social media on mental health. The questionnaires gather the participants’ general information, the effects of utilizing social media, and the social media events that affect their mental health. With a total of 272 respondents, a survey distributed online to high school students from March 26 to May 6 was randomly chosen. According to our study, the type of school has a significant effect on the student’s mental health. This is due to the fact that different high school students use social media in different ways and experience different effects on their mental health in both positive and negative ways. Statistics also reveal that youths in Thailand are more likely to be addicted to social media and use a variety of social media platforms. This study could serve as a guideline for further studies that specifically focus on the kinds of social media platforms used by adolescents and the kinds of content they consume.

Kediripedia Online Media Editor's Strategy For Increasing Generation Z's Reading Interest

Generation Z was born when digital technology was developing rapidly. They learned quickly and grew into a generation adept at using digital devices such as laptops, smartphones, tablets, and others. As a result, Generation Z spend more time using digital devices, exploring the virtual world, and interacting on social media than interacting face-to-face in real life. This behavior also arises because most of their daily activities are close to gadgets, so it becomes a new habit and impacts the decline in interest in reading. For this reason, means and ways are needed to change these habits. This research aims to find Kediripedia.com's strategy to generate interest in reading among Gen Z. The findings show that Kediripedia.com generate a strategy to increase young readers' interest in reading by taking two approaches. First, Kediripedia.com researched Gen Z to find out what kind of content and information presentation criteria interest them. Second, Kediripedia.com uses multi-platform information presentation by combining text, images, videos, and attractive visual design to create a playful yet accurate and credible information package for all groups, especially Generation Z.

TikTok and Political Communication: The Latest Frontier of Politainment? A Case Study

TikTok is without any doubt the most popular social media among Gen Zers. Originally born as a lip-syncing app, it can be exploited in different ways; as such, it represents a new fertile space for political communication. In this vein, previous studies have shown that politicians all over the planet are joining the platform as a tool to connect with younger audiences. This study examines the use of TikTok in the last presidential elections in Peru. Following an affordance-based approach, we analyze all the TikToks published by the main candidates (Pedro Castillo, Keiko Fujimori, Rafael Lopez Aliaga, Hernando de Soto, and George Forsyth) during the electoral campaign, to understand if and how candidates have integrated this platform as part of their electoral strategy and what kind of content they publish and share. Through a content analysis that combines quantitative and qualitative elements, we demonstrate that, although all the analyzed politicians have opened TikTok accounts, they do not seem to take full advantage of the platform’s affordances displaying a top-down communication style with almost no deliberative nor participative intentions. Political issues are almost absent since the platform is mostly used to display their personal life and enhance their political persona, with most of the content displaying a clear entertaining dimension. Some differences are discussed but, in general, results reveal that Peruvian candidates use TikTok almost uniquely for politainment.
