夢考房を活用した工学設計教育の国際交流

International collaborative project of engineering design education traces back to the time when two visiting academic staff from Singapore Polytechnic (SP) came to Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT) for four months in 2002 to study engineering design education. An international collaborative project to commercialize a new healthy product, which was developed by SP students of School of Chemical and Life Sciences, started in 2006. KIT organized a Yumekobo project and SP offered Product and Process Research and Development Program in order to promote the joint project. Students of both institutions conducted market analyses and package designs of the new product which was developed by other SP students. In this paper, the international collaborative project is discussed in details.

チーム活動を伴う実験科目における教育効果

Fundamental engineering experimentation opened at Kanazawa Institute of Technology aims at learning the problem-finding and problem-solving ability through experimentation and team activity. In this experimentation, the results of the team and individual tasks for participant are graded, however, the effect of the individual contribution on the grading is not investigated until now. In this study, we investigated the correlation between the load of the team task and the grade in this experimentation. We found that the grade became low when the load of the team task increased. On the other hand, we showed the impact of the shared team tasks on the grading. Consequently, the team activity, in which the team tasks are equally shared by the plural member, is available for improving the education of fundamental engineering experimentation.

学習・教育目標の自己点検と教育改善

Educational institutions have to evaluate the level of achievement of learning and educational goals in order to maintain a high standard of education. And it is necessary to incorporate the results of this evaluation of learning and educational goals into the learning environment. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Kanazawa Institute of Technology has designed an “Environmental self-check sheet” . In addition, by utilizing the “Environmental self-check sheet” a plan for an “educational improvement system” has been formulated. By using the “Environmental self-check sheet” it is possible for students to check their own learning and educational goals. The “educational improvement system” can incorporate the results of the evaluation of learning and educational goals into the learning environment. Consequently, it is possible to maintain high standards in education. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Kanazawa Institute of Technology is implementing activities to bring about improvements in education by the use of the “Environmental self-check sheet” .

金沢工業大学における夢考房プロジェクト教育

Yumekobo, which can be translated as “Factory for Dreams and Ideas” , has been attracting the attention of reform-minded educators in Japanese universities. The major function of Yumekobo is to support a student project called the Yumekobo project. It resembles an extra-curricular club activity as at other universities; however, the Yumekobo project is not only an extra-curricular activity but also a symbol of the educational philosophy of Kanazawa Institute of Technology. Students in the Yumekobo project are encouraged to develop a good character, which includes independence, creativity, morality, cooperation, and internationalism. In this paper, an overview of the Yumekobo project is given, and its characteristics are described. Further, its educational effects are discussed based on an analysis of student questionnaires conducted from 2002 to 2005.

日本，米国およびシンガポールの高等教育機関における工学設計教育の国際交流

An international joint program of Engineering Design has started in 2004 between Kanazawa Institute of Technology, Singapore Polytechnic in Singapore, and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the United States. Students from the three institutions worked on the same engineering design project, the main theme of which was, “Bus Transportation/Urban Transportation System in the 21st Century”. Student teams chose their own project themes from specific design areas, which were related to the main theme. Their achievements were unique in their solutions due to the differences in society and culture in Japan, the United States and Singapore, although all the design teams followed the same engineering design procedures. In this paper, the international joint project is discussed in details.

E-ラーニング手法を科学技術倫理教育に用いる意義

What is of importance of engineering ethics education is how to properly evaluate whether students have acquired the ability to make ethical judgements. Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT) has launched a new curriculum in 2004 in which university-wide engineering ethics education program is realized. As a part of the program, a capstone course, “Science and Engineering Ethics” is taught to 1,700 students by several instructors. It is quite obvious that how to evaluate will be a crucial problem. To mitigate the difficulty, KIT plans to introduce an e-learning tool, Agora, to the course. Developed by Dutch technological universities, it is designed for engineering ethics education. It enables structured analyses of cases, which is essential for engineering ethics education.

金沢工業大学の技術者倫理教育への全学的な取り組み

Owing to the increasing attention to the engineering ethics matter, its education has become the core of the engineering education. Many people agree that it should be given not just as a course but across the entire curriculum. However, the engineering instructors would find it difficult to integrate the ethics education into their courses because they have had no training in this area for themselves. To solve this problem, Dr. Michael Davis proposed “Micro-Insertion” technique by which instructors can introduce a small unit of ethics education into their courses. As a part of the curriculum revision in 2004, Kanazawa Institute of Technology implemented the engineering ethics education in several engineering courses adopting the “Micro-Insertion” technique along with establishing a new required engineering ethics course. This paper describes our unique approach to the Ethics Across the Curriculum (EAC) .

金沢工業大学機械系におけるものづくり教育（機械工作・演習）への取り組み

This paper reported that the manufacturing education currently carried out at department of mechanical engineering in Kanazawa Institute of Technology. It is the feature of machine work and practical training to perform both the lecture of manufacturing technology and a manufacturing practical training dealing with the heat sink for model engine in parallel, while having a class. A student can experience directly the flow of the manufacturing which consists of a design, manufacture and evaluation of the heat sink. This experienced type class can be used for a student recognizing the necessity for technical knowledge. Moreover, it is effective for improvement in the motivation to study.

工学基礎物理における学生による授業評価の統計的分析と成績との相関分析

Student evaluations of instruction have been conducted through questionnaires in a freshman class for fundamental physics at Kanazawa Institute of Technology. The data from the evaluations are analyzed by principal-component analysis, which reveals three components with an eigenvalue greater than 1. The first and second components are interpreted as the quality of the instruction and the basic scholastic ability of the students evaluating the instruction, respectively. We find that the first component can be controlled by the instructor, but the second one cannot be. Correlation between the data from the student evaluations and students' exam scores is analyzed by multiple-regression analysis, showing that the first two components in the data are significant predictors of the exam scores. The analysis shows that the instructor's effort of improving the quality of the teaching (first component) would be able to significantly raise the students' exam scores.

地域社会と連携した創造性工学教育

The purpose of this study is to document how students can be provided with a creative engineering education in collaboration with the local community. It is important for students to tackle the problems of local community. The involvement of young people, such as college students, in solving the problems of local communities will contribute to their revitalization. Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT) created two introductory engineering design courses : Engineer Design I (ED I) and Engineer Design II (ED II). ED I is taught in the freshman year, and ED II is taught in the sophomore year. KIT started a collaborative project with Nonoichi Town, where KIT campus is located. Officials of Nonoichi Town supplied KIT students in ED II with real project themes, to which solutions were needed, in order to improve the quality of town life. The officials provided students with valuable information and practical advice. As a result, students were able to generate excellent and viable design solutions.

2A1-B36 Open Dynamics Engineを用いたロボット教育教材 : マニピュレータ・シミュレータの開発

This paper presents a robotics educational material based on Open Dynamics Engine (ODE). ODE is an open source, fast, robust and an industrial quality library for the real-time and interactive simulation of rigid body dynamics. ODE is suitable for developing robotics educational materials. The developed material, a 3DOF robot manipulator simulator, is used in a subject in the undergraduate program at Kanazawa Institute of Technology. Students are able to tackle the subject with interest by the material.

工学設計科目におけるｅ‐Ｌｅａｒｎｉｎｇシステム活用の試み

The purpose of this study is to consider how to use the e-Learning system in the engineering design courses at Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT). The courses consist of two levels: Engineering Design I (ED I) and Engineering Design II (ED II). The former is taken by all freshmen during the second quarter, and the latter is taken by all sophomores during the sixth quarter. KIT's calendar has three 10-week quarters per year. The courses require students to participate in a team project from the problem discovery stage to the concept design stage. As the first e-Learning trial in the engineering design course, we introduce the collaboration-communication function of the e-Learning system to our ED I class. In this paper, we describe the students' activities in each engineering design process in situations where students can use the e-Learning system.

金沢工業大学が提供する小・中・高校生向けの科学実験授業

YUMEKOBO (Factory for Dreams and Ideas) at Kanazawa Institute of Technology holds KIT Summer Science School for elementary, junior high, and high school students as a contribution to our community. The purpose of the KIT summer Science School is to afford younger students an opportunity to experience the science world through hands-on projects. In addition, we would like to help them to cultivate both the idea that "Science is interesting" and "To device is fun." This summer event has become such a popular annual activity that there are twice as many applicants as there is capacity. In this paper, we introduce the management style of the event and discuss the results and the improvements made to date.

金沢工業大学・工学設計ＩＩＩにおける創成教育「自動押印機の設計・製作」の試みと成果

"Engineering design III " is a capstone-type subject at the "Engineering design education" which is a main curriculum in Kanazawa Institute of Technology, and it is done through one year in the senior course. In engineering design III, many trials have been done by the idea, knowledge and wisdom of each student in making "Research", "Product", and "Problem" be main keyword. In the author's laboratory, two students tried a creative and educational project entitled "Designing and manufacturing of automatic imprinting machine" in fiscal 2002. In this paper, the outline of this challenge is reported.

金沢工業大学大学院は，主として知的財産とIT技術に関して社会人の再教育の場を提供するために，本年度から東京・虎ノ門にある東京キャンパスにおいて新たに知的創造システム専攻（修士課程）を開設した。そして，この専攻には知的財産プロフェショナルコースを設けて，わが国初の試みである知的財産と情報技術（IT）の融合した知的財産教育プログラムを開始した。本稿においては，この金沢工業大学大学院の知的財産教育の取り組みについて紹介する。
