This research aims to explain the different forms of juvenile delinquency, the factors that contribute to it, and the impact it has in the novel Dignitate by Hana Margaretha. The theory used in this study is literary sociology theory. The research employs a descriptive method and utilizes the novel Dignitate by Hana Margaretha as the primary source of data. The study results show that there are two forms of juvenile delinquency: (1) delinquency that does not violate the law and (2) delinquency that does violate the law. Additionally, the factors contributing to juvenile delinquency can be categorized into two types: internal factors, which originate from the teenagers themselves, and external factors, which come from outside influences like the family environment and the community environment. Lastly, the impact of juvenile delinquency manifests in three ways: affecting the teenagers themselves, impacting the family, and influencing society as a whole.

The partner of this Service was a mosque youth community in Batu Belah Village, Kampar, Riau. While the characteristics of the population in this village are relatively homogeneous, their problems are instead heterogeneous, especially those faced by its teenagers. The crime rate has been moderately high, with types of juvenile delinquency, drug abuse, theft, and decreased school motivation. Like elsewhere, the teenagers of this village are also suffering from gadget addiction. To this end, this Service aimed to help solve those problems by aligning the community's peace and upgrading social facilities. Establishing the Literacy Corner was one of the solutions by which the teenagers will gain literacy skills and improve their knowledge. The three Literacy Corner programs are: (1) establishing a reading corner, (2) selecting Reading Ambassadors from the teenagers, and (3) conducting a seminar on Digital Media Literacy. The ultimate goal of this Service was to build the habit of good literacy among Batu Belah Village teenagers, enhance the youth community's empowerment and generally minimise the problems weighed by the residents of Batu Belah Village, Kampar Riau.

Education plays a strategic role as a long-term investment in nation building, preparing the younger generation with the necessary knowledge, skills and values. The National Education System Law emphasizes the importance of education in the holistic development of individuals. However, the education system is faced with various challenges, including equitable access to education, varying education quality, and the relevance of the curriculum to the needs of the world of work. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods to explore efforts to prevent juvenile delinquency in high schools. Through interviews with teachers and observations at school, this research found that communication between schools and parents as well as interpersonal communication between teachers and students have a crucial role in preventing juvenile delinquency. Prevention efforts are carried out by building good communication with parents, visiting the homes of students with problems, providing advice, guidance and direction to students, as well as developing students' social and emotional skills. The research results show that effective communication between schools and parents can produce positive changes in student behavior, reducing rates of truancy and withdrawal from school. Interpersonal communication between teachers and students plays an important role in helping students overcome personal and social problems, as well as building a harmonious relationship between teachers and students. Education has a crucial role in shaping individual character, knowledge and skills. Effective communication between schools and parents as well as between teachers and students is the key to preventing juvenile delinquency and improving the quality of education in schools.

Diversion is a critical mechanism in the juvenile criminal justice system in Indonesia, aimed at protecting the rights of children and preventing the negative impacts of formal criminal proceedings. This normative legal study explores the challenges and potential improvements in implementing diversion for juvenile offenders facing sentences over 7 years. The study utilizes secondary data sources, including the Indonesian Juvenile Criminal Justice System Law (Law No. 11 of 2012), Supreme Court Regulation No. 4 of 2014 on Diversion Guidelines, and relevant literature on restorative justice and child protection. The analysis reveals significant barriers, such as legal limitations, cultural factors, and inconsistencies with international standards like the Beijing Rules. The study concludes with recommendations for revising existing legislation to remove the 7-year sentence limitation, enhancing coordination among legal and rehabilitation institutions, providing restorative justice training for law enforcement, and increasing public awareness of the importance of diversion and child rights protection. These steps are essential for ensuring a more just and effective implementation of diversion in Indonesia.

The importance of family education is a sentence that always comes to mind every time we see various cases and problems that occur in this era. Starting from cases of divorce, murder, suicide, bullying, to juvenile delinquency. It is not uncommon for various cases of these problems to occur as a result of a lack of family education. Therefore, this research aims to find out how family education is in Malay culture, and whether family education in Malay culture is in accordance with the Koran and hadith which are the basis of Malay cultural customs. This research uses a library research method which uses reading references from both libraries and online media to obtain the required information data. The results of this research include the obligation of husbands to educate their wives and the obligations of parents to educate their children. Through proper understanding and implementation of the values ​​of the Qur'an and hadith, it is hoped that family education in Malay culture can become a strong foundation for building a harmonious family and preventing cases of detrimental problems in society.

“Kids are Kids”: Benevolent Ignorance and the Omission of Race in Developmental Justice Reform

The criminal culpability of juvenile offenders remains a controversial and contested issue in the legal and public arenas in the United States. Since the mid-2000s, juvenile crime has been reframed by SCOTUS as a problem of brain immaturity. This article interrogates the omission of race from this new discourse of immaturity. First, I show that an alliance of learned societies, scholars, policy experts, legal professionals, and philanthropic foundations, which I call the new child savers, strategically sowed doubt about the criminological evidence of “high-risk” offenders to ensure the success of this new discourse of immaturity. I introduce the concept of benevolent ignorance to explain how they strategically concealed this inconvenient knowledge to achieve the socially valued goal of “saving children” from harsh sentences, and to escape public controversies over the racial overtones of risk assessment tools. Second, using Mills’ s concept of white ignorance, I argue that progressive elites and scholars involved in juvenile justice reform have historically ignored the lived experiences of juveniles of color. Finally, I discuss how the discourse of brain immaturity perpetuates and reinforces a colorblind explanation of juvenile crime that ignores the role of race in young people's encounters with the justice system.

Discontinuities in and Perceptions of Mental Health Service Path of Violent Young Offenders: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

Studies on mental health service use among juvenile violent offenders prior to their acts of violence are sparse. Mostly, their service use seems to be short-term, although there may have been several service periods. Little is known about how they have perceived those services. Using a qualitative content analysis on data from forensic psychiatric examination statements, we studied discontinuities in the use of mental health services of 15-22-year-old violent Finnish offenders and descriptions of their perceptions of those services. There were several types of discontinuities: limited youth engagement and subsequent dropping out from services, or partial or total refusal of the proposed examinations or treatments. Most discontinuations were instigated by the youth themselves, followed by the parents and the service system. The subjects had perceived mental health services to be not beneficial for the most part, although some experienced benefits from medication. When treating children and adolescents with behavioral symptoms clinicians should identify the early signs of the process of disengagement from treatment and pay attention to the perceptions of the treatment of both the youth and their parents. Also, more research is needed on the user experience of mental health services among violent offenders, as well as factors relating to discontinuities along their mental health service path.

Art therapy in mitigating pervasive loss and grief within correctional settings

Those incarcerated often experience different types of loss. Because of where they are, such experiences often result in unresolved, unacknowledged, disenfranchised grief. Recognizing such vulnerability by those who are incarcerated is often difficult and, in some ways, dangerous. Not addressing such losses further exacerbates their chances of completing any respective programs established for success. Art therapy has been effective in alleviating such complications, including for those incarcerated inside correctional institutions. This article draws from the authors’ experiences of providing art therapy services in a statewide program for youthful offenders–those who are 14–22 years old but in the adult institutions–to mitigate obstacles for completing their General Education Degree—and will provide an overview of the various losses that incarcerated individuals experience, their potential grief responses, and the value of art therapy in addressing such grief. The case vignettes provided underscore how, as their expressions were made visible and subsequently seen, validated and acknowledged through art therapy, the incarcerated youth were able to begin the process of moving beyond their grief and attend to their goals, allowing them to succeed in their respective programs, which may include but are not limited to; re-entry focused, substance abuse, GED prep classes, college courses and technical trade programs.

Latent heterogeneity of deviant behaviors and associated factors among ethnic minority adolescents: a latent class analysis

BackgroundDeviant behaviors are common during adolescence. Despite the diversity of juvenile delinquency, the patterns of deviant behaviors remain unclear in ethnic minorities. The present study aimed to evaluate the latent heterogeneity of deviant behaviors and associated factors in ethnic minority Yi adolescents.MethodsThe present study recruited a large sample of 1931 ethnic minority Yi adolescents (53.4% females, mean age = 14.7 years, SD 1.10) in five secondary schools in 2022 in Sichuan, China. The participants completed measures on 13 deviant behaviors and demographic characteristics, attitudinal self-control, and psychological distress. Sample heterogeneity of deviant behaviors was analyzed via latent class analysis using class as the cluster variable.ResultsThe data supported three latent classes with measurement invariance by sex. 68.2%, 28.0%, and 3.8% of the sample were in the Normative, Borderline, and Deviant class, with minimal, occasional, and extensive deviant behaviors, respectively. The Deviant class was more prevalent in males (6.5%) than females (1.6%). There were significant class differences in domestic violence, school belonging, self-control, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Males, domestic violence, low school belonging, and impaired self-control significantly predicted higher odds of the Deviant and Borderline classes compared to the normative class.ConclusionThis study provided the first results on three latent classes of deviant behaviors with distinct profiles in ethnic minority adolescents in rural China. These results have practical implications to formulate targeted interventions to improve the psycho-behavioral functioning of the at-risk adolescents in ethnic minorities.

Factors Contributing to Juvenile Crime: A Narrative Review

This study aims to discuss on some of the main factors that contribute to juvenile crime commitment, and specifically how those factors affect the psychological health of young adults. Factors identified in previous literatures as a significant contributor to juvenile crimes fall under three main categories: family, school, and peers. Structure of the family, parental attachment and treatment of the child during their early childhood are the main elements of family-related factors that determine the likeliness of teenagers leaning towards infliction. For school-related factors, a poor performance (whether academically or extracurricular-wise) and bullying/harassment on campus strongly control the rate of crime conviction in juveniles. Longtime accompany with other anti-social friends and social distancing are the major peer-related factors that play a huge part in leading to offending in the later adolescent stage. Current studies can certainly be a knowledge basis for finding solutions to juvenile crime. Further research can be done in further study of how these factors correlate, and whether slight alternations to them can reduce the rate of crime in those under the age of 18.

Quality of parenting and juvenile delinquency

The increase in the number of juvenile delinquents in Nigeria especially Benin Metropolis can be dangerous for the future of adolescents. One of the factors causing this as inferred in this study is parents. This study therefore aims to determine the relationship between Quality of Parenting and Juvenile Delinquency. The design of this study was descriptive. Analysis of the study was carried out using the Chi-square test. The number of samples in this study was 123 juvenile delinquents and 5 officials at the Children Correctional Center, Benin City. The study adopted the total number of population as its sample which is 123 juvenile delinquents thus no sample technique was used. While the 5 officials were purposively selected out of 7 officials. The dependent variable was juvenile delinquency. The parameters for measuring Quality of Parenting were parenting styles, parents’-child communication, family structure and parents’ socio-economic status. The two parameters were significantly related to juvenile delinquency especially parenting styles and family structure. In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between Quality of Parenting and Juvenile Delinquency.

Intervention and Diversion Program Implementation for the Children in Conflict with the Law in Pangasinan

Juvenile delinquency is of a global concern, members of the United Nations (UN), including the Philippines, remain committed to funding research, programs, and initiatives to combat juvenile delinquency and provide positive outcomes for youth, their families, and their communities, as well as raising awareness and ensuring the proper implementation of the juvenile justice system. There are now a plethora of international mechanisms in place that provide specific protection to youths in the juvenile justice system, such as diversion and intervention, which will be the focus of the paper. Data and statistics on children in conflict with the law and, in particular, the status of children on intervention and diversion are both lacking in the country. For the establishment of appropriate policies and initiatives aimed at improving juvenile justice and protecting the rights of children in confrontation with the law, this is essential. The aim of this paper is to assess the implementation of the diversion and intervention programs for CICL as stipulated in the Juvenile Justice Welfare Act of 2006 otherwise known as RA 9344.

CHILD PROTECTION AND JUVENILE JUSTICE: LEGAL ISSUES IN BANGLADESH AND MALAYSIA

Child protection and juvenile justice are emerging issues and a major concern for nations across the globe. Considering the importance of child protection, different nations in the world have also given attention to reducing child delinquency by amending their laws on children. Bangladesh and Malaysia have ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) 1989 and incorporated its principles into their domestic legal framework for child-friendly care and protection of juvenile offenders. Since 2013, there have been many new concepts developed on this issue in the legal systems of both countries. The government of Bangladesh has enacted the Children Act 2013 by replacing the previous Children Act 1974. As a result, Bangladesh can now legally safeguard children’s best interests more effectively. The Malaysian government amended the Child Act 2001 and introduced the Child (Amendment) Act 2016 to protect children and establish institutional treatments for juvenile offenders. The government has also legislated the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 to reduce delinquency. As a result, the child protection and justice systems in both countries have developed new dimensions, as well as preventing the abuse of the vulnerabilities of detained children during pandemic times. The present study analyses the major changes in the juvenile justice process in both countries, especially the protection of children as per the domestic legal framework and at the same time guided by international legal standards. The present study has a qualitative research design and uses content analysis to identify, analyze, and synthesize the content of child-related laws. The findings will be valuable to policymakers, as they point to the need to strengthen the existing legal framework for better child protection within the justice systems of both Bangladesh and Malaysia.

Timing Matters: Exploring the Age-Graded Effects of Juvenile Arrest on Educational Attainment

Scholars have spent considerable time studying barriers to educational attainment. This work has highlighted the deleterious effects of juvenile arrest on educational attainment but has overlooked the importance of timing of first arrest in this age-graded process. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY97), this study examines the age-graded nature of arrest experiences on educational attainment. The analysis reveals that age at first arrest is a predictor of educational outcomes, emphasizing the detrimental effects of early arrests. These findings highlight the importance of addressing juvenile delinquency through supportive interventions rather than punitive measures. Given the current educational and juvenile justice landscape, the implications of this study are even more relevant.

Joyriding Among Young First Nations Australians: Assessing Police Trust and Confidence Through the Lens of Youth and Key Stakeholders

Young First Nations Australians typically distrust and are reluctant to cooperate with the police. This article discusses data from a pilot intervention programme regarding First Nations young people’s involvement in car theft and joyriding. We conducted seven in-depth interviews with young Australians – most of whom identified as First Nations Australians – and six key community stakeholders who helped to deliver the programme. Our findings indicate that both sample groups held negative and distrusting perceptions of the police which, for the young people, were often precipitated by perceived discriminatory and procedurally unjust encounters with the police. We argue that heavy-handed and discriminatory policing of young First Nations Australians may perpetuate youth offending and joyriding behaviours among this group. The article argues that the police should adopt more community-oriented policing approaches to build trust with young First Nations Australians.

Differentiating crossover youth: Examining psychological characteristics in a multicultural Australian youth justice cohort

The association between childhood maltreatment and juvenile offending has been well-established, with a significant proportion of justice-involved young people being found to have child protection service histories. However, it is unclear what psychological factors contribute to this complex relationship. This study aimed to compare levels of impulsivity, impulsive aggression, psychopathology, and a sensitivity to anger, as well as gender and ethnocultural background, across justice-involved youth with and without a child protection history. The study sample comprised 215 young people detained in juvenile detention centers across two sites in Victoria, Australia between July 2011 and June 2012. Measures of impulsivity, impulsive aggression, internalizing and externalizing behaviors, and sensitivity to anger were administered and compared amongst those who had previously been the subject of a child protection order and those without such histories. Results of logistic regression analyses indicated that impulsivity and impulsive aggression were independently associated with having a child protection history in justice-involved youth. Ethnocultural background was also significantly associated with having a child protection history. Implications for clinical practice and future research are discussed.
