Jupiter’s Satellites, from Cassini to Today’s Icy Worlds: 350 Years of Observation and Study of the Galilean Satellites of Jupiter at Paris Observatory

The satellites of Jupiter discovered by Galileo in 1610 are among the most interesting and difficult objects to study. These are complex worlds whose size is close to that of Mars. The four satellites are similar to a small solar system, their motions bringing together all the difficulties of celestial mechanics. These satellites, known as the Galilean satellites also have the peculiarity of being regularly eclipsed by the planet Jupiter, a phenomenon easily observed from Earth. As soon as the Paris Observatory was created, it soon became clear that these satellites were not only objects of study for astronomers, but also valuable auxiliaries for geographers and explorers, helping to define a universal time. Thus, they were used to perfect the cartography of France as desired by Louis XIV during the creation of the observatory. They also helped demonstrate the finite speed of light. The greatest astronomers were interested by these satellites, especially Laplace, who first, understood and described the dynamics of the Jovian system. Delambre undertook to observe and collect many observations of the eclipses of these satellites which are still useful today. More recently, space exploration revived these studies; the Voyager probe sent us unprecedented images revealing their icy surface. The continuous gain in accuracy of astrometric observations allowed to refine their dynamics, modeling and constraining their internal structure: the tidal effects of Jupiter on its satellites are now observable from Earth. These satellites remain a chosen field of study at Paris Observatory; where 350 years later their story continues to be told.

Jovian Planets and Lunar Nodal Cycles in the Earth’s Climate Variability

This study utilizes time-series data devised to measure solar irradiation, sea surface temperatures, and temperatures in the lower atmosphere to gain a better understanding of how gravitational effects from the moon and Jovian planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) influence solar activity and climatic conditions on Earth. Then, standard statistical methods are used to determine the degree of correlation among these time series and construct a Jovian gravitational model. The study reveals a direct relationship between JSUN perihelion coincidences and TSI amplitude variations in cycles up to 4,450 years. The forced solar accumulation of heat in oceans introduces a new phase relation between solar forced cycles and new climate variation. Earth’s axis nutation cycles have coincidences with lunar nodal tide cycles and lunar forced sea surface temperature cycle periods up to 446 years. Earth’s temperature variation shows coincidence with constructive and destructive interference between lunar-forced and accumulated solar-forced temperature variations in oceans. Upcoming events have a computed modern temperature maximum in 2025 and a deep minimum in 2070. Interference between solar-forced temperature cycles of 333,2142, and 4,450 years and a lunar-forced temperature cycle of 445 years indicates that “The Little Ice Age” covers a total period of 820 years from 1330 to 2150 A.D. and an upcoming temporary cold climate period from 2070 to 2150.

Thermophysical properties of helium and hydrogen mixtures under high pressure predicted by ab-initio calculations: Implications for Saturn and Jupiter planets

The thermodynamic and physical properties of Helium (He) and Hydrogen (H) mixtures are crucial form an astrophysical perspective. Nowadays, it is well known that these two elements constitute roughly 95% of the matter in the solar system. The high-pressure equation of He state doped with H is calculated in the framework of density functional theory (DFT) for three crystallographic structures. Namely, the Body Centered Cubic (BCC), Face Centered Cubic (FCC), and hexagonal close packed (HCP) structures have been studied. The equations of state (EOS) are provided for the He 0.90 H 0.10 and He 0.70 H 0.30 mixtures and the energy of the same mixtures are calculated with the earlier structures. The band structure for pressures of 0, 75 and 150 GPa were estimated by our calculations for the presumed crystal structures in the case of pure He and He 0.70 H 0.30 mixture for comparison. The k x − k y cuts of the Bloch Spectral Functions (BSF) are presented for the pure He and He 0.70 H 0.30 mixture for the three structures to explore the impact of doping on electronic properties. In addition, electrical resistivity calculations of the mentioned structures were carried out for mixtures with 10, 15, 20 and 30% of H. At final stage, the enthalpy (ΔH) of these latest mixtures have been deduced for the three crystal structures.

Magnetospheric response to solar wind forcing: ultra-low-frequency wave–particle interaction perspective

Abstract. Solar wind forcing, e.g., interplanetary shock and/or solar wind dynamic pressure pulses impacting Earth's magnetosphere, manifests many fundamental important space physics phenomena, including producing electromagnetic waves, plasma heating, and energetic particle acceleration. This paper summarizes our present understanding of the magnetospheric response to solar wind forcing in the aspects of radiation belt electrons, ring current ions and plasmaspheric plasma physics based on in situ spacecraft measurements, ground-based magnetometer data, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and kinetic simulations. Magnetosphere response to solar wind forcing is not just a “one-kick” scenario. It is found that after the impact of solar wind forcing on Earth's magnetosphere, plasma heating and energetic particle acceleration started nearly immediately and could last for a few hours. Even a small dynamic pressure change in interplanetary shock or solar wind pressure pulse can play a non-negligible role in magnetospheric physics. The impact leads to generation of a series of waves, including poloidal-mode ultra-low-frequency (ULF) waves. The fast acceleration of energetic electrons in the radiation belt and energetic ions in the ring current region response to the impact usually contains two contributing steps: (1) the initial adiabatic acceleration due to the magnetospheric compression, (2) followed by the wave–particle resonant acceleration dominated by global or localized poloidal ULF waves excited at various L-shells. Generalized theory of drift and drift–bounce resonance with growth- or decay-localized ULF waves has been developed to explain in situ spacecraft observations. The wave-related observational features like distorted energy spectrum, “boomerang” and “fishbone” pitch angle distributions of radiation belt electrons, ring current ions and plasmaspheric plasma can be explained in the framework of this generalized theory. It is worth pointing out here that poloidal ULF waves are much more efficient at accelerating and modulating electrons (fundamental mode) in the radiation belt and charged ions (second harmonic) in the ring current region. The results presented in this paper can be widely used in solar wind interacting with other planets such as Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune and other astrophysical objects with magnetic fields.

Introduction. The article studies the oscillatory modes of the atmosphere of two planets (Jupiter, Venus), taking into account the influence of axial rotation, which affects the occurrence of beating and resonance, and comparing their parameters with the parameters of the Earth’s atmosphere. Materials and research methods. We consider fluctuations in the atmosphere, which was initially in a state of statics, caused by the initial temperature rise near the earth's surface and the daily rotation of the earth. To describe them, a system is used that includes the equation of motion in the Euler form and expressions that take into account the distribution of temperature and air pressure with height. The case when the rotation of the Earth around its axis leads to significant periodic temperature changes is considered in detail. Research results and their discussion. The values of the main parameters of the atmosphere of Jupiter and Venus are found in order to study the oscillatory regimes of the atmospheres on these planets and build an appropriate mathematical model. At the beginning, we find the standard parameters of velocity amplitudes, temperatures, Brunt-Väisälä frequencies in order to calculate the quantities included in the system of equations describing the fluctuations of air in the atmosphere and build the corresponding graphs of these equations for the purpose of their further analysis. Solutions for oscillatory processes are obtained when daily changes in air temperature are taken into account. Conclusions. It is shown that in the standard atmosphere the axial rotation of the planet does not affect the oscillatory processes in the atmosphere, while the terrain is taken into account. However, there is a case when the difference between the above frequencies is extremely small or zero (this is possible at). If the frequency of Brent – Väisälä coincides with the frequency of the daily rotation of the Earth or their difference is insignificant, then phenomena such as resonance or beats occur, which are considered in detail.

Thermal conductivity measurements of macroscopic frozen salt ice analogues of Jovian icy moons in support of the planned JUICE mission

ABSTRACT The study of thermal properties of frozen salt solutions representative of ice layers in Jovian moons is crucial to support the JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) (ESA) and Europa Clipper (NASA) missions, which will be launched in the upcoming years to make detailed observations of the giant gaseous planet Jupiter and three of its largest moons (Ganymede, Europa, and Callisto), due to the scarcity of experimental measurements. Therefore, we have conducted a set of experiments to measure and study the thermal conductivity of macroscopic frozen salt solutions of particular interest in these regions, including sodium chloride (NaCl), magnesium sulphate (MgSO4), sodium sulphate (Na2SO4), and magnesium chloride (MgCl2). Measurements were performed at atmospheric pressure and temperatures from 0 to −70 °C in a climatic chamber. Temperature and calorimetry were measured during the course of the experiments. An interesting side effect of these measurements is that they served to spot phase changes in the frozen salt solutions, even for very low salt concentrations. A small sample of the liquid salt-water solution was set aside for the calorimetry measurements. These experiments and the measurements of thermal conductivity and calorimetry will be valuable to constrain the chemical composition, physical state, and temperature of the icy crusts of Ganymede, Europa, and Callisto.

The fastest routes of approach to dwarf planet Sedna for study its surface and composition at the close range

Current research focuses on designing fast trajectories to the trans-Neptunian object (TNO) (90377) Sedna to study the surface and composition from a close range. Studying Sedna from a close distance may provide unique data about the earliest stages of the Solar System evolution, including the protoplanetary disc stage and related mechanisms. The trajectories to Sedna are determined considering flight time and the total characteristic velocity (ΔV) constraints. The time of flight for the analysis was limited to 20 years. The direct flight, the use of gravity assist manoeuvres near Venus, the Earth and the giant planets Jupiter and Neptune, and the flight with the Oberth manoeuvre near the Sun are considered. It is demonstrated that the use of flight scheme with ΔVEGA (ΔV and Earth Gravity Assist manoeuvre) and Jupiter-Neptune gravity assist leads to the lowest cost of ΔV≈6.13 km/s for launch in 2041. The maximum payload for schemes with ΔVEGA manoeuvre is 500 kg using Soyuz 2.1.b, 2000 kg using Proton-M and Delta IV Heavy and exceeds 12,000 kg using SLS. For schemes with only Jupiter gravity assist, payload mass is twice less than for ones with ΔVEGA manoeuvre. As a possible expansion of the mission to Sedna, it is proposed to send a small spacecraft to another TNO during the primary flight to Sedna. Five TNOs suitable for this scenario are found, three extreme TNOs 2012 VP113, (541132) Leleākūhonua (former 2015 TG387), 2013 SY99) and two classical Kuiper Belts objects: (90482) Orcus, (20000) Varuna.

On gravity and quantum interactions

We introduce the metric of general relativity into a description of baryon mass spectra which otherwise has been founded entirely on the concept of an intrinsic configuration space, the Lie group U(3). We find that the general relativistic metric influences the mass eigenstates in gravitational fields. We discuss parts per million effects that may be observed in space missions close to the Sun or the planet Jupiter, for instance by accurate Cavendish experiments or energy shifts in gamma decays of metastable nuclei like Ba-137m. We review how the particle and gauge fields are generated by momentum forms on the intrinsic wave functions to form the quantum field bases for instance of quantum chromodynamics. Our strategy to combine quantum interactions and general relativity is that of geometrising quantum mechanics rather than quantising gravity.

Radiation tolerance of GaAs1-xSbx solar cells

High radiation tolerance of GaAs1-xSbx based solar cells is demonstrated for the low-intensity-low-temperature (LILT) conditions of the target planets Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars. The GaAs1-xSbx-based cells are irradiated with high energy electrons to assess the effect of harsh radiation environment on the solar cell and the response of the cell is then investigated in terms of its photovoltaic operation. This system shows significant radiation resistance to the high energy electron environment for the conditions of the planets of interest. An unusual increase of the short circuit current after irradiation is observed at low temperature, which is supported by a simultaneous increase in the external quantum efficiency of the cell under the same conditions. The open circuit voltage and fill factor of the cell are especially tolerant to irradiation, which is also reflected in unchanged dark current-voltage characteristics of the solar cell upon irradiation particularly at LILT.

Long-term dynamics of the inner planets in the Solar System

Although the discovery of the chaotic motion of the inner planets in the Solar System (Mercury to Mars) was made more than 30 years ago, the secular chaos of their orbits still demands more analytical analyses. In addition to the high-dimensional structure of the motion, this is probably related to the lack of an adequately simple dynamical model. We consider a new secular dynamics for the inner planets, with the aim of retaining a fundamental set of interactions that explains their chaotic behaviour and at the same time is consistent with the predictions of the most precise orbital solutions currently available. We exploit the regularity in the secular motion of the outer planets (Jupiter to Neptune) to predetermine a quasi-periodic solution for their orbits. This reduces the secular phase space to the degrees of freedom dominated by the inner planets. In addition, the low masses of the inner planets and the absence of strong mean-motion resonances permits us to restrict ourselves to first-order secular averaging. The resulting dynamics can be integrated numerically in a very efficient way through Gauss’s method, while computer algebra allows an analytical inspection of planet interactions when the Hamiltonian is truncated at a given total degree in eccentricities and inclinations. The new model matches reference orbital solutions of the Solar System over timescales shorter than or comparable to the Lyapunov time very satisfactorily. It correctly reproduces the maximum Lyapunov exponent of the inner system and the statistics of the high eccentricities of Mercury over the next five billion years. The destabilizing role of the g1 − g5 secular resonance also arises. A numerical experiment, consisting of a thousand orbital solutions over one hundred billion years, reveals the essential properties of the stochastic process driving the destabilization of the inner Solar System and clarifies its current metastable state.

Tadpole type motion of charged dust in the Lagrange problem with planet Jupiter

We investigate the dynamics of charged dust interacting with the interplanetary magnetic field in a Parker spiral type model and subject to the solar wind and Poynting–Robertson​ effect in the vicinity of the 1:1 mean motion resonance with planet Jupiter. We estimate the shifts of the location of the minimum libration amplitude solutions close to the location of the L4 and L5 points of the classical – gravitational – problem and provide the extension of the ‘librational regimes of motion’ and the width of the resonance in dependency of the nongravitational parameters related to the dust grain size and surface potential of the particles. Our study is based on numerical simulations in the framework of the spatial, elliptic restricted three-body problem and semi-analytical estimates obtained by averaging of Gauss’ planetary equations of motion.

Depth of Space and Radius of the Electron

The cosmological model of the expanding balloon in 4D-space (CM) delivers in interaction with a homogeneous vector field exactly Newton’s law of gravitation with its 1/r-shape of the gravitational funnel. So far, the depth of space, W, in the 4-th spatial dimension can only be calculated using the theoretical approach of Feynman’s radius of excess rex=a/3 with Schwarzschild-radius a. With this, the connection to the general theory of relativity (GR) is established, but the situation is unsatisfactory. In the present study, the possibilities of an experimental approach to the calculation of spatial depth, W, are explored. The only experimental approach so far is the bending of light on a central mass. We hypothesize in addition to the main effect φ = -4a/y, i.e., the angle of diffraction of a light beam on a heavy central mass in the distance y and with Schwarzschild-radius a, an additional effect close to the center of the form φC ~ -1/y4. This additional effect has on the edge of the central mass about 1/3 of the strength of the main effect. However, its influence disappears very quickly with increasing distance. For this reason the sun cannot be used as the central mass. The bright corona and the strong magnetosphere do not allow measurements close to the sun. However, ESA’s GAIA mission puts the planet Jupiter at the center of interest. This spacecraft measures with extremely high precision the positions of billions of stars. Results of first data analyses have already been published. As a side effect - the application of the CM to small particles provides an indication that the radius of the electron could be in the order of 10-23 m.

A scaling relationship for non-thermal radio emission from ordered magnetospheres: from the top of the main sequence to planets

ABSTRACT In this paper, we present the analysis of incoherent non-thermal radio emission from a sample of hot magnetic stars, ranging from early-B to early-A spectral type. Spanning a wide range of stellar parameters and wind properties, these stars display a commonality in their radio emission which presents new challenges to the wind scenario as originally conceived. It was thought that relativistic electrons, responsible for the radio emission, originate in current sheets formed, where the wind opens the magnetic field lines. However, the true mass-loss rates from the cooler stars are too small to explain the observed non-thermal broad-band radio spectra. Instead, we suggest the existence of a radiation belt located inside the inner magnetosphere, similar to that of Jupiter. Such a structure explains the overall indifference of the broad-band radio emissions on wind mass-loss rates. Further, correlating the radio luminosities from a larger sample of magnetic stars with their stellar parameters, the combined roles of rotation and magnetic properties have been empirically determined. Finally, our sample of early-type magnetic stars suggests a scaling relationship between the non-thermal radio luminosity and the electric voltage induced by the magnetosphere’s co-rotation, which appears to hold for a broader range of stellar types with dipole-dominated magnetospheres (like the cases of the planet Jupiter and the ultracool dwarf stars and brown dwarfs). We conclude that well-ordered and stable rotating magnetospheres share a common physical mechanism for supporting the generation of non-thermal electrons.

The near-UV transit of HD 189733b with the XMM–Newton optical monitor

ABSTRACT We present analysis of XMM–Newton optical monitor observations in the near-ultraviolet of HD 189733, covering 20 primary transits of its hot Jupiter planet. The transit is clearly detected with both the UVW2 and UVM2 filters, and our fits to the data reveal transit depths in agreement with that observed optically. The measured depths correspond to radii of $1.059^{+0.046}_{-0.050}$ and $0.94^{+0.15}_{-0.17}$ times the optically measured radius (1.187 RJ at 4950 Å) in the UVW2 and UVM2 bandpasses, respectively. We also find no statistically significant variation in the transit depth across the 8 yr baseline of the observations. We rule out extended broad-band absorption towards or beyond the Roche lobe at the wavelengths investigated, although observations with higher spectral resolution are required to determine if absorption out to those distances from the planet is present in individual near-UV lines.

AIM: Motivated by this, the author explored the game of cricket further and this too was incredibly true, to be described under different headings in this article. Material has been derived from contents of cricket namely: equipment, actions, famous world cricketers, and places related to cricket. Methods were Google search, under three headings: firstly; many things in cricket are destined to happen at a fixed time and place, just like in author’s clubfoot publications. Secondly: Unprecedented repetitions of number 3 in cricket under various headings, and THIRDLY, on Google search, number 3 in numerology, symbolic of planet Jupiter, has innumerable good attributes for the related people. This number has been found to have myriad, evolutionary bonds, in every area of humanity, on planet earth and beyond, since ancient times, which are scientific, spiritual, socio-religious, political, etc. Conclusions: 1. Many events are completely scientific; 2. Others are unique coincidences with scientific explanation and 3. Still, others are amazing truths, proving again that “Truth is Stranger than Fiction”. Because of its uniqueness, this article needs to spread its wing.

Transport Characteristics of the Electrification and Lightning of the Gas Mixture Representing the Atmospheres of the Solar System Planets

Electrification represents a fundamental process in planetary atmospheres, widespread in the Solar System. The atmospheres of the terrestrial planets (Venus, Earth, and Mars) range from thin to thick are rich in heavier gases and gaseous compounds, such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, argon, sodium, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide. The Jovian planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) have thick atmospheres mainly composed of hydrogen and helium involving. The electrical discharge processes occur in the planetary atmospheres leading to potential hazards due to arcing on landers and rovers. Lightning does not only affect the atmospheric chemical composition but also has been involved in the origin of life in the terrestrial atmosphere. This paper is dealing with the transport parameters and the breakdown voltage curves of the gas compositions representing atmospheres of the planets of the Solar System. Ionization coefficients, electron energy distribution functions, and the mean energy of the atmospheric gas mixtures have been calculated by BOLSIG+. Transport parameters of the carbon dioxide rich atmospheric compositions are similar but differ from those of the Earth’s atmosphere. Small differences between parameters of the Solar System’s outer planets can be explained by a small abundance of their constituent gases as compared to the abundance of hydrogen. Based on the fit of the reduced effective ionization coefficient, the breakdown voltage curves for atmospheric mixtures have been plotted. It was found that the breakdown voltage curves corresponding to the atmospheres of Solar System planets follow the standard scaling law. Results of calculations satisfactorily agree with the available data from the literature. The minimal and the maximal value of the voltage required to trigger electric breakdown is obtained for the Martian and Jupiter atmospheres, respectively.

The basic goal of this study (as the first step) is to collect the appropriate set of the fundamental astronomic-geodetics parameters for their further use to obtain the components of the density distributions for the terrestrial and outer planets of the Solar system (in the time interval of more than 10 years). The initial data were adopted from several steps of the general way of the exploration of the Solar system by iterations through different spacecraft. The mechanical and geometrical parameters of the planets allow finding the solution of the inverse gravitational problem (as the second stage) in the case of the continued Gaussian density distribution for the Moon, terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) and outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune). This law of Gaussian density distribution or normal density was chosen as a partial solution of the Adams-Williamson equation and the best approximation of the piecewise radial profile of the Earth, including the PREM model based on independent seismic velocities. Such conclusion already obtained for the Earth’s was used as hypothetic in view of the approximation problem for other planets of the Solar system where we believing to get the density from the inverse gravitational problem in the case of the Gaussian density distribution for other planets because seismic information, in that case, is almost absent. Therefore, if we can find a stable solution for the inverse gravitational problem and corresponding continue Gaussian density distribution approximated with good quality of planet’s density distribution we come in this way to a stable determination of the gravitational potential energy of the terrestrial and giant planets. Moreover to the planet’s normal low, the gravitational potential energy, Dirichlet’s integral, and other planets’ parameters were derived. It should be noted that this study is considered time-independent to avoid possible time changes in the gravitational fields of the planets.

Revealing the Intensity of Turbulent Energy Transfer in Planetary Atmospheres

AbstractImages of the giant planets Jupiter and Saturn show highly turbulent storms and swirling clouds that reflect the intensity of turbulence in their atmospheres. Quantifying planetary turbulence is inaccessible to conventional tools, however, since they require large quantities of spatially and temporally resolved data. Here we show, using experiments, observations, and simulations, that potential vorticity (PV) is a straightforward and universal diagnostic that can be used to estimate turbulent energy transfer in a stably stratified atmosphere. We use the conservation of PV to define a length scale, LM, representing a typical distance over which PV is mixed by planetary turbulence. LM increases as the turbulent intensity increases and can be estimated from any latitudinal PV profile. Using this principle, we estimate LM within Jupiter's and Saturn's tropospheres, showing for the first time that turbulent energy transfer in Saturn's atmosphere is four times less intense than Jupiter's.
