It was my privilege to have served as editor of the Journal since August 1991. My two terms of office are complete and I am very pleased to announce that Professor Kornel F. Ehmann from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, has assumed the editorship for the Journal effective March 1, 2002. I have known Professor Ehmann since our graduate student days at the University of Wisconsin. Professor Ehmann is not new to the manufacturing community. His accomplishments as a scholar have been recognized nationally and internationally. He has been a regular contributor to the Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering and participated heavily in ASME symposia organized by the Manufacturing Engineering Division. He has served two three-year terms as associate editor for the Journal and has maintained the high quality and reputation for the Journal. I hope you will join me in welcoming him and I hope you will support him with your continued service. The Journal has changed drastically in the last ten years. In 1995, the former title, Journal of Engineering for Industry, was changed to Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering. As anticipated, the Journal continues to attract the highest quality work in a wide variety of manufacturing areas including traditional metal cutting and forming to new laser and nano-scale manufacturing. In fact, in the past ten years, the number of submissions increased by about 45 percent. The Journal is enjoying rising levels of participation from the United States as well as foreign countries. The number of pages published has also grown from 500 pages in 1991 to 900 pages in 2001. I want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the 42 dedicated people who have served as associate editors for the Journal over the past ten years. The greatest challenge to the editorial staff has been to obtain reviews in a timely manner. During the past ten years, the associate editors have worked hard to reduce the review portion of the cycle without sacrificing the quality and reputation of the Journal. I also want to express my appreciation for the strong supportive infrastructure of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Illinois. Lastly, I want to thank June Kempka for her assistance these past ten years. Without her support, my task would have been much more difficult.
