Exploring social dimensions of AIDS

This article introduces the topics contained in the June 1991 issue of Journal of Community & Applied Social Psychology, that unanimously explore the social dimensions of AIDS. The social dimensions are many and varied. At the macrosocial extreme, there are national laws and policies, structural constraints and religious or political taboos which limit what people are permitted to do. In one article, Rene Richard and Joop van der Pligt report a study based on Fishbein and Ajzen's theory of reasoned action, that investigates condom use among adolescents. Another authors investigate the impact of sexual self-efficacy and self-esteem on the preventive behavior of 17 to 20 year olds. In addition, implications of a British public health campaign emphasizing the value of getting to know partners, are also considered. Furthermore, another article explores whether health care workers have a different perception of their risk of HIV infection from the general population.

The Rotating Credit Association: A "Middle Rung" in Development

The building up of a variety of institutions, serving the purpose of promoting individual savings, and organizing them and making them fruitful to the saver and to the community, should be given a high priority in every development plan. To be effective, the institutions have to be adapted to different individual needs and possibilities and must fit into the community patterns; they must aim at encouraging planned and "goal-directed" savings. Even if, at least in the beginning, the financial results would not constitute more than a trickle of new capital disposal, the effects in rationalizing attitudes and mobilizing ambitions might be crucially important. --Gunnar Myrdal, in An International Economy (p. 360)
