The family in exile: Cuban expatriates in the United States.

For the nearly one million Cuban exiles in this country, the ordeal of expatriation has meant anguish and uprootedness, challenge and accomplishment. Several factors account for the comparatively successful aspects of their struggle: relatively high occupational and educational levels, formation of vigorous communities that permit the maintenance of a positive ethnic consciousness and the creation of strong social ties, and effectively organized reception by the United States. Expatriation is always traumatic and produces "casualties," but mastery of the struggles it involves can lead to personal growth and expanded horizons. The Cuban expatriate experience shows that the influx of large numbers of refugees can be a creative and enriching process for both the host country and the individual refugee.

Effect of Television Violence on Children and Youth

One hundred forty-six articles in behavioral science journals, representing 50 studies involving 10,000 children and adolescents from every conceivable background, all showed that violence viewing produces increased aggressive behavior in the young and that immediate remedial action in terms of television programming is warranted. Four major issues are covered: effects on learning, emotional effects, the question of catharsis, and effects on aggressive behavior. The research findings regarding each of these issues are summarized, as well as the controversial 1972 Surgeon General's report, Television and Social Behavior. The time is long past due for a major, organized cry of protest from the medical profession in relation to what, in political terms, I consider a national scandal.

Citation Count Analysis of Behavioral Science Journals in Influential Management Literature

The article looks at a survey which examined the influence of behavioral science journals on academicians and personnel managers in the U.S. A survey of academicians and practitioners was conducted first to determine which journals were most influential in the field of management. Researchers analyzed the number of bibliographical references to anthropological, psychological, and sociological journals within the management literature. The author concludes that academic and industrial respondents are influenced by many of the same journals.

Discussion of Cognitive Aspects of Annual Reports: Field Independence/ Dependence

Research studies in behavioral accounting can take two possible approaches. One approach, advanced by Hofstedt and Kinard [1970] and followed, for example, by Dickhaut and Ronen [1972], attempts to discover universal relationships between accounting variables and the behavior of information users. Alternatively, accounting researchers can assume initially that the population of users of accounting information is made up of far too many separate and distinct groups to yield to this approach. A second approach, therefore, makes use of differences among individuals as determinants or moderators in information/user-behavior models. It is my belief that the latter approach more closely approximates the realities of the accounting situation and will prove more fruitful in providing meaningful results (e.g., Dermer [1973]). Furthermore, I expect that individual difference studies will become a popular type of behavioral accounting research. Hence, I welcome this study as evidence of the validity of my beliefs. However, as is evidenced by the abundance of individual difference studies in behavioral science and marketing journals, there exist a multitude of constructs and measures which may be of potential use in accounting studies. Thus, if accounting researchers are to avoid becom ing engulfed in a confusing wave of disjointed individual difference studies, a strong theoretical foundation as well as an appropriate and precisely applied methodology must be the hallmarks of this type of research. It therefore troubles me that Lusk's study cannot lay claim to either of these.

Pilgrim's Progress I: Recent Developments in Family Theory

In an attempt to assess the current state of theory and research in the study of the family, a survey of all articles focusing on marriage and the family published in 12 behavioral science journals from 1962 through 1968 was made. The findings related to the development and utilization of theory are reported in this paper. Findings indicate a general lack of utilization of theory to guide empirical research. When theory is used, it tends to be either structural-functional or interactional, with the developmental framework being the third most popular choice. Other theoreticalconceptual frameworks fail to appear to any significant extent. Articles appearing in recent years tend to be rated more positively on seven evaluational questions, thus indicating an improvement in the quality of published papers on the family

SYMPTOMATOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE GRIEF

At first glance, acute grief would not seem to be a medical or psychiatric disorder in the strict sense of the word but rather a normal reaction to a distressing situation. However, the understanding of reactions to traumatic experiences whether or not they represent clear-cut neuroses has become of ever-increasing importance to the psychiatrist. Bereavement or the sudden cessation of social interaction seems to be of special interest because it is often cited among the alleged psychogenic factors in psychosomatic disorders. The enormous increase in grief reactions due to war casualties, furthermore, demands an evaluation of their probable effect on the mental and physical health of our population. The points to be made in this paper are as follows: i. Acute grief is a definite syndrome with psychological and somatic symptomatology. 2. This syndrome may appear immediately after a crisis; it may be delayed; it may be exaggerated or apparently al)sent. 3. In place of the typical syndrome there may appear distorted pictures, each of which represents one special aspect of the grief syndrome. 4. By appropriate techniques these distorted pictures can be successfully transformed into a normal grief reaction with resolution. Our observations comprise tot patients. Included are (i) psychoneurotic patients who lost a relative during the course of treatment, (2) relatives of patients who uied in the hospital, (3) bereaved disaster victims (Cocoanut Grove Fire) and their close relatives, ( ) relatives of members of the armed forces.
